İnstallation grid infrastructure problem for 11G R2 (root.sh failed)
Hi All, I have a problem about ASM preinstallation.
firstly, ı wanna install grid infrastructure for ASM but end of grid infrastructure installation when i run root.sh script
i take the following failed and CRS and CSS didnt set and start.
LOCAL ADD MODE
Failure with signal 11 from command: /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid/bin/crsctl pin css -n ora2
Creation local only OCR (/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/grid/bin/crsctl pin css -n ora2) ... Failed
after that when i continue installation ı take Oracle Net Configuration Asistant Failed message.
Configuration of My computer is
AMD Athlon II X3 440 3.01GHz
*4G memory.*
and we are working on VMware linux redhat 5. All installation -except this config- was successful.
Are there anyone about this problem and solution..
Thanks all.
Not sure exactly why you are getting that error or what is the meaning of it, but I would suggest installing the ASM instance and maybe at least one datagroup, if you have not already done so, before installing Grid control. This is the sequence which I have followed in the past (with 10G) and it worked flawlessly.
Hope that helps.

Grid Infrastructure installable for Oracle Restart only (No ASM)?
Hello,
Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? i.e., No ASM,; this box uses local RAID 5 filesystems only.
This is a standalone 32-bit RHEL 5 system with Oracle Database 10gR2 already installed that I intend to upgrade to 11gR2. Just experimenting with installing Grid Infrastructure for only its restart capability. There isn't anything out there I've found that addresses this other than the Oracle doc stating that the Infrastructure must be installed if I want to use ASM or Oracle Restart.
I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.
Thank you!
-JonHi Erik,
Can Oracle Grid Infrastructure be installed for its Oracle Restart functionality only? Yes ... you can do that installing Software Only
I'm currently in the installer in a Software Only installation waiting for my SysAdmin to run the root.sh script, but in looking at this script, it looks like it might try to do things with CRS, voting files and the like, which do not exist.Don't worry about that ... at the end of the execution of the root.sh script will report a proceedings to configure only Oracle Restart.
Only this resource "ora.evmd" will appear online.

Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2 root.sh hangs in the second node
Hi,
I am installing Oracle Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2.0 using VM's. Both the virtual machines are running RHEL 5.7 32 bit version.
Until the point where the installation suggests to run two scripts as root user, everything runs fine.
root.sh runs successfully on the first node.
On the second node it hangs at,
Now product-specific root actions will be performed.

Grid Control installation for 11G: is 10g grid required ?
Dear All,
We are currently using the local dbconsole for the monitoring and doing administrative work on our 11g database. My limited experience and observation indicates that 11G does not have its own enterprise Grid control yet and it requires the older 10G grid control ? So if we deploy (albeit successfully 10G grid control), does the enterprise manager control tabs will be very different than the current dbconsole in 11G ?
Thanks.user6116850 wrote:

Thanks.Upgrade Grid Control to 10.2.0.5. Grid Control is an independent product and will not follow the same numbering as Database and App Server/Fusion.
It will provide a lot of extra pages and tabs anyway. And it will format and present the information for Oracle 11g properly to work in it's pages.
Try it and see.

ALV grid Refresh problem for one user
Have an ALV with editable columns. Validation and save works for all columns for one user but not for the other. The user with the issue is able to modify the values and save to the database fine. The problem is it doesn't display in the ALV once refreshed. Please suggest any ideas of how to look into this issue as it works for one and not other user.
Strange work for one user not for other.
Once you save the data, rebind the data to table. so that new data will display. ( that use set_initial_elements as true, so that old values not display ).

=== ODM Action Plan ===
Dear customer, after went through the uploaded log files, we found the issue looks like
bug 9732641 : The clusterware gpnpd process crashes when there is more than 1 cluster with the same name.
To narrow down the issue, pls apply the following steps.
1. Pls clean the previous configuration with below steps, then run root.sh script on node1 again.
1.1 remove current configuration.
$GRID_HOME/crs/install/rootcrs.pl -verbose -deconfig -force
1.2 remove other related files.
if $GI_BASE/Clusterware/ckptGridHA_.xml still there, please remove it manually with "rm" command on all nodes
If the gpnp profile is still there, pls clean up them, then rebuild require directories.
$ rm -rf $GRID_HOME/gpnp/*
$ mkdir -p $GRID_HOME/gpnp/profiles/peer $GRID_HOME/gpnp/wallets/peer $GRID_HOME/gpnp/wallets/prdr $GRID_HOME/gpnp/wallets/pa $GRID_HOME/gpnp/wallets/root
2. After the previous configuration was cleaned up, pls rerun the root.sh script again. If the issue still there, pls upload the following:
Everything under <GI_HOME>/log
Everything under <ORACLE_BAES for grid user>/cfgtoollogs
Everything under <GI_HOME>/cfgtolllogs/crsconfig
OS log(/var/log/messages)
3. Pls also make sure there is only one GI running on your cluster.
See /opt/app/11.2.0/grid/cfgtoollogs/crsconfig/rootcrs_dmdb1.log for details -
11g R2 RAC - Grid Infrastructure installation - "root.sh" fails on node#2
Hi there,
I am trying to create a two node 11g R2 RAC on OEL 5.5 (32-bit) using VMWare virtual machines. I have correctly configured both nodes. Cluster Verification utility returns on following error \[which I believe can be ignored]:
Checking daemon liveness...

Check failed on nodes:
rac2,rac1
PRVF-5415 : Check to see if NTP daemon is running failed
Clock synchronization check using Network Time Protocol(NTP) failed
Pre-check for cluster services setup was unsuccessful on all the nodes.
While Grid Infrastructure installation (for a Cluster option), things go very smooth until I run "root.sh" on node# 2. orainstRoot.sh ran OK on both. "root.sh" run OK on node# 1 and ends with:
Checking swap space: must be greater than 500 MB. Actual 1967 MB Passed
The inventory pointer is located at /etc/oraInst.loc
The inventory is located at /u01/app/oraInventory
*'UpdateNodeList' was successful.*
*[root@rac1 ~]#*
"root.sh" fails on rac2 (2nd node) with following error:
CRS-2672: Attempting to start 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2'
CRS-2676: Start of 'ora.evmd' on 'rac2' succeeded
Timed out waiting for the CRS stack to start.

I know this info may not be enough to figure out what the problem may be. Please let me know what should I look for to find the issue and fix it. Its been like almost two weeks now :-(

I had seen the same problem and the following resolved the problem for me.
[root@rac1 ~]# rm -f /usr/tmp/.oracle/* /tmp/.oracle/* /var/tmp/.oracle/*
[root@rac1 ~]# > $ORA_CRS_HOME/log/<node_name>/cssd/<node_name>.pid

During the installation of grid infra(cluster) for Oracle 11.2 RAC one.
Good Day All, and thanks in advance…
During the installation of grid infrastructure(cluster) for Oracle 11.2 RAC One Node on AIX6.1 ( PROD) , ASM used. I am getting below errors when executing ./root.sh
Upon investigation ,I managed to get note: 1068212.1 from the support oracle site ( see below for details) . I might be hitting Unpublished bug 8670579. I also logged Severity 2 SR with Oracle support to get the bug/patch fix and no one has attended the call.
This might be configuration issue or otherwise , if you have experienced the same issue please assist ? ( if you need more logfiles please feel free to request)….
I ran the Cluster Verify Check – all passed.
Many Thanks
Ezekiel Filane

We are also trying to install 11.2.0.2 Grid infrastructure for Oracle RAC One Node on AIX 6.1. We did a POC in our lab environment and after much struggle got that working. Hi all,
We are in the process of building our new enterprise environment and tried to install the following:
Oracle Linux 6.0
Grid Infrastructure 11.2.0.2
ASM
OCFS2
Oracle RDBMS 11.2.0.2
Installation of Grid Infrastructure failed on Oracle Linux 6.0 and 5.6 as well. Is it because it's not yet certified for these Oracle Linux versions? Where can we find compatibility matrixes or certification information to find out which versions do work together? Been trying to find them with no success.
Thanks for any help!Dude wrote:
I have recently installed Oracle 11.2.0.2 including ASM, which also installs Grid infrastructure under Oracle Linux 5.6 (default UEK kernel) without any problems. I installed the oracle-validated package prior to the Oracle installation.OEL 5.6 and 11.2..02 Grid Infrastructure installation (for x86_64) failed in our case. Have opened a SR several weeks ago for it, but no resolution. We since reverted back to OEL 5.5 for building and running this specific RAC.
There's also errors in OEL 5.6's Infiniband s/w stack. The openibd service fails to apply errata correctly because the o/s command used has since changed command line parameters. My guess is that testing happened solely on new h/w where this errata did not have to be applied, thus were not tested. Also, this service failed to start the srp_daemon (is critical for making sure that the storage layer works each and every time and does not cause stale connections that lead to command rejections from the storage server after a reboot of a RAC node)
I not only had to fix the openibd service to correctly apply the errata, but also write a separate srpd service that dealt with starting up and shutting down the srp_daemon.
Not very impressed with OEL 5.6 at all and it will be unlikely that we'll use it. And it raises a lot of concern whether OEL 6 would be a robust enough o/s for running our RAC systems. -
OFA & Grid Infrastructure home
Hi!
I am experiencing some difficulty understanding where to install install GI
According to "Oracle® Grid Infrastructure Installation Guide 11g Release 2 (11.2) for Oracle Solaris", http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/install.112/e24616/presolar.htm :
The OFA path for the Oracle base is /u01/app/user, where user is the name of the software installation owner.
So, i'm expecting to see Oracle Database binaries in /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0.3
and Grid Infrastructure (ASM,Oracle Restart) binaries in /u01/app/grid/product/11.2.0.3
Why i have to create /u01/app/11.2.0/grid ? Why GI is installed to /u01/app/11.2.0/grid, not to /u01/app/grid ?
Edited by: Jim on 02.02.2012 7:37Hi Jim,
Why i have to create /u01/app/11.2.0/grid ? Why GI is installed to /u01/app/11.2.0/grid, not to /u01/app/grid ?Because creating an Oracle Clusterware installation in an Oracle base directory will cause succeeding Oracle installations to fail.
So, Oracle base for the grid installation owner "/u01/app/grid", and if the user is oracle "/u01/app/oracle". A Grid Home should be /u01/app/11.2.0/grid. (i.e GI_HOME out of ORACLE_BASE)
The reason behind this is:
In version 11.2 Oracle introduced a security that protects the binaries Installation of Grid Infrastructure. This prevents unnecessary changes or access in that OH.
To modify binaries of grid infrastucture, you must unlock that ORACLE_HOME.
So this security must not be applied to ORACLE_BASE of Grid Installation.
Re: Patching Grid Infrastructure
P.S Homes for Oracle Grid Infrastructure for a standalone server (Oracle Restart) can be under Oracle base.
See note on documentation:

ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM
Hi,
I am trying to install ASM 11gR2 on RHEL5. I am using VMWare Workstation for this.
I have already installed Oracle database software and Grid Infrastructure on this machine. While installing Grid Infrastructure, I chose install Grid Infrastructure software only.
Once this was successfull I am trying to create ASM instance using asmca.
Regarding the disks, I am using raw devices. I created a virtual disk which I have partitioned but haven't formatted it. Done this to create raw device
[root@localhost sysconfig]# /bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 /dev/sdb
/dev/raw/raw1: bound to major 8, minor 16
and have added
ACTION=="add",KERNEL=="sdb",RUN+="/bin/raw /dev/raw/raw1 %N"
to /etc/udev/rules.d/60-raw.rules
Then I tried creating the disk but it failed. So I did the following steps to fix it
[root@dhcppc2 Softwares]# /etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk VOL1 /dev/sdb
Marking disk "VOL1" as an ASM disk: [FAILED]
[oracle@oracle11gR2 grid]$ tail -f /var/log/oracleasm
Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
To fix this
[root@localhost ~]# /usr/sbin/asmtool -C -l /dev/oracleasm -n VOL1 -s /dev/sdb -a force=yes
asmtool: Device "/dev/sdb" is not a partition
asmtool: Continuing anyway
Now I am able to view the asmdisk through listdisks option.
Have set following environment variables before running asmca
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export ORACLE_HOME=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid
[oracle@oracle11gR2 ~]$ export PATH=/u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid/bin:/usr/sbin:/usr/kerberos/bin:/usr/local/bin:/usr/bin:/bin:/usr/X11R6/bin:/home/oracle/bin
When I am running ASMCA I am facing this error - Oralce Grid Infrastrcture is not configured properly. ASMCA needs Oracle Grid Infrastructure to configure ASM
Any thoughts?Hi Aman,
Thanks for the reply.
Is it possible to configure 11gR2 ASM on single instance databases ? I have done the config with 10g but I am struggling with the Grid Infrastructure. For eg: when I do deinstall of Grid Infrstructure
+[oracle@oracle11gR2 deinstall]$ ./deinstall -home /u01/app/oracle/product/11.2.0/Grid+

Root.sh problem grid infrastructure 11g
Hi all,
I am about to install grid infrastructure 11g (11.2.0.1) on RHEL5.5 64 bit where i use VMware platform which is VMware server 2 on Windows2008 Server. I am pretty sure that i followed the installation instructions but i cannot get rid of the following error which occurs while i am running the root.sh.
You can also find errors in the oraagent_oracle.log and orarootagent_root.log at the end of the post. There are communication errors at the end of the both log files but they dont give any clue to me or my knowledge is not enough to understand why crs is complaining.
maybe this is a known issue or somebody can understands what grid infrastructure is angry about. thanks for any effort.
