Installation of ISO: With partitioning already done, where do I start?

The document I refer to is: http://ebalaskas.gr/wiki/archlinux/netinstall#h254-14
My question is:
Given that I have already used gparted to create a bootable partition, can I forego the first stages of the install procedure as set forth in the wiki
(which are all to do with partitioning, and creating a swap file) and proceed straight to the install?
If so, does that mean that my first task is to create mount points?
Thanks in advance for any help.

I am just trying to get oriented around here: your tone comes across as condescending, then finally just boorish.
Is that how you wish to come across?

Following that rhetorical question with an example of Godwin's law undermines the whole post.
Please keep in mind that tone is often lost in online posts. Trilby's point is correct and intended to steer you in the right direction. We only offer support on this forum for the "official" installation guides. If you want to follow something else then you are free to do so, but we cannot help you with that, only the author can. Obviously we recommend the official guides and wiki. They are the most accurate and up-to-date.

  • I have a Mac 10.6.3. Everytime I open FireFox the installer icon shows up on my desk top. Even when I eject it and close Firefox when I reopen it the installer shows up again asking me to drag the icon to my applications folder, which I have already done

Every time I open Firefox the installer opens onto my desktop with the icon to drag it into my application file. I have already done so. I tried dragging it again but it says that it already exists. I have to eject the installer to get it off of my desk top after I am done using Firefox. After closing Firefox if I want to open it again it does the same thing. I just downloaded Firefox today. I have also tried restarting my computer. I have a MacBook Pro.

You will not be able to install Firefox 3.6.8, you already have the last version of Firefox that works on OS X 10.3.9. Later versions of Firefox require at least OS X 10.4

  • Help! After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

After interrupting an installation of a program downloaded from the internet on my mac in a reboot cycle will not start, I've already done the disk check and it's ok and I reinstalled the OS 10.8 Lion

In this case, I think that there's something damaged that can't be fixed just reinstalling OS X.
If you don't want to lose files, you will have to create a second partition in the hard drive and install OS X there, so you will be able to recover everything you need. Then, you will have to erase the first partition and reinstall OS X. Follow these steps:
    1. Hold Command and R keys while your Mac is starting to start into OS X Recovery, and open Disk Utility.
    2. You can follow the steps of this site to create a second partition > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU3.html
    3. After creating the second partition, close Disk Utility and install OS X on the second partition.
    4. When the installation finishes, open Finder and, in the sidebar, you will see the other partition. Open it and recover the files you need.
    5. After doing that, repeat the step 1.
    6. Select “Macintosh HD” in the sidebar, go to Erase tab and erase the disk.
    7. Close Disk Utility and install OS X on the first partition.
After doing all of these steps (you will need a lot of time to do this), you can delete the second partition you created and add the size of this partition into the first one > http://pondini.org/OSX/DU4.html

I had to reset my PayPal account with iTunes and now I'm getting a apple I'd has been disabled on both my iPad and iPhone. I've already done all the steps on my computer.  Now what?

They give me that option when I'm setting up my account and I've got all that worked out. But my apple I'd is still disabled on my Mac, iPad, and iPhone. I can't download anything nor can I update any of my apps. I've even changed my account to a credit card and it still didn't help.
Any ideas?  I've put in a support request. Hopefully they won't take too long.

    HI,
If your old version of iTunes is still working - then I sugest you stick with that.
iTunes 11 is a lousy update - It will not retain your playlists, you can't find and delete duplicates... and a whole arry of oyher issues. (have a look around this forum to see how many issues IT11 gives people)
Just a friendly advise and warning :-)

If I wiped my phone I wouldn't have the contacts on my phone to send to my self.    I would need to take just the contacts from my back up. • When downloading a large file, like a movie Internet Explorer automatically provides one with the choice of where to save it - e.g. "C" drive, but Firefox doesn't. How can it be done?

When downloading a large file, like a movie, Internet Explorer automatically opens a download window offering the choice to "Open" or "Save"the file. This provides one with the choice of where to save it - e.g. "C" drive, in the "My Documents" or "Desktop" folders but Firefox's download window doesn't. This has always frustrated me because I would rather use Firefox exclusively to access the Internet, but when it comes to saving files downloaded off the Internet, sadly, I have to revert to IE!

If you click on Firefox from the upper-left, then Options, a new window should appear. On that window, click on the general tab. In the middle of the window, you'll see options regarding your downloads, one of which says, "Always ask me where to save files." Click on the bubble for this options, then click Ok. From then on, you should always be prompted on where you want your files saved.

  • Installation big problem with Officejet 8500

    My problem is the following:
I have a LAN on which are connected 2 PC's with XP, 1 PC with Vista and one with Windows 2000. I want to install a printer on the router using TCP/IP and cable.
The installation of the Officejet 8500 was without problem on the XT machines.
It went well on the Vista machine. Then it lost the printer. I had to go back to the pre-installation stage and do it again. Now it seems OK.
The problem is on Windows 2000. The installation process goes up to the point where the printer is found and the IP address and printer ID correct.
Then the sofware tries to configure the printer and it fails (the printer configuration has failed). I have tried again a lot of time without success.
The only way out is to proceed with installation and try to establish the connection to the printer later. I tried it also, without success.
The contacted HP support seems to be lost with the problem.
    Can somebody help me?
    Many thanks,

When you say that after half an hour it told you that you "could not" do you mean that the install process never began (no "installing..." progress bar) or that it did start but subsequently quit, reporting failure?
If the first, try booting from your G4's Tiger install disk & running its copy of Disk Utility -- don't do an install but instead choose that application from the "Utilities" menu of the installer application. Perform both the disk repair (first) & then permissions repair. Quit Disk Utility, choose the Startup Disk utility (from the same menu), select your G4's drive & restart.
If the second, your Tiger OS has been compromised with some (but not all) the Leopard components, which is why startup hangs. For this, start off as above but just run the disk repair from the Tiger installer disk, then perform an Archive & Install from its installer. This should restore the Tiger OS to a functional state, but you will have to reapply any OS 10.4 updates released after the release date of the Tiger installer disk. A good way to save time with that is by downloading the latest combo updater (10.4.11) & applying it.
In either case, it is a good idea to backup your home folder(s) from your G4 to prevent data loss should anything go wrong. Target disk mode, as already described, is a good way to access the G4's contents even if you can't boot it into an OS.

  • Re: Satellite L40 PSL48E: Can I create a installation disk from Vista partition

    Hi,
my Satellite L40 PSL48E came with a Vista recovery partition.
As I despise Vista I bought a replacement drive and installed a new hard-drive and installed XP pro.
I retained the original drive in case i ever had to claim under warranty.
I now find that due to work commitments I have to occsionally use the despised Vista rubbish and wonder if it is possible to create a Installation disk from the partition on the original drive so tha ti can create a dual boot system on my new drive.
I am very reluctant to BUY a new Vista CD since I already have a fully legal copy on a drive which I am not using and I will only use it VERY rarely for this one work commitment.
    Any information gratefully received
    Thanks Ron

    OK and thanks.
My next problem is this. I have XP on the main partition and WinRE on the hidden partition. How the heck do I get at the hidden partition. I don't have any boot disks ( none were provided with the machine when I bought it new. Pressing F8 only takes me the the normal XP options Safe boot boot as normal etc.
I've tried f10 and f12 and f11 tas I've seen these suggested on a few newsgroup posts. Anyone got any ideas please.
Toshiba Recovery Disc creatoe seems to be the key from what i read but if this is not present how do i get to the hidden partition and run it?
HELP please. How i hate the fact that manufacturers don't provide a proper CD or DVD anymore it is a right PITA.

  • Cannot Complete Installation of Vista with Mac Pro and Boot Camp

I only have one hard drive with my Mac Pro, and I partitioned the drive into two sections with boot camp and restarted with my Vista 64 bit Ultimate CD.
I have tried formatting the partition with Vista and it still gives me the dreaded error message of "windows is unable to find a system volume that meets its criteria". I've tried deleting the partition during installation, and making a new partition with Vista, reformatting, then restarting the computer. Same message.
I don't know what to do. I've tried like mad searching for topics like this one here, but every one of them deals with installing vista on a second dedicated hard drive on the Mac Pro. I only have one. How do I get this to work?
Please help if you can. I would REALLY appreciate it. I'll be watching the thread. Thank you!!

I have the 3GHz Dual-Core Intel Xeon processors. I tried installing Vista ultimate with my 32 bit software, but I still get the same message (I own both legally, btw).
    Thanks for your help.
    Several things to do:
Run OS-X Disk utility and repair the disk if necessary, and file permissions.
Be sure your HD has the GUID partition scheme and if it has SMART that it's OK
    Zap the PRAM
Be sure you are logged in as administrator when creating the BC partition and starting the installation of Windows from Leopard
When I installed Vista Ultimate 64-bit, I was using BootCamp beta, 1.2 or 1.3. I created the partition with BootCamp Assistant.app as you did. It's a 60GB partition that I formatted with NTFS with BC.
After starting the install in Tiger, I then simply inserted the Vista 64-bit DVD and that was it.
    It just installed.
Ditto with XP-Pro on my other MBP. Zero problems with BC. It was also done with a beta, BC1.0.
I have never installed Windows using Leopard. When I updated to Leopard from Tiger nothing changed, but there seem to be more problems with Leopard and BC2.0 than there were with Tiger and the beta versions.
There are no requirements about legality until after the OS is installed, so that's a moot point.
There are some install DVDs that are in ISO format and they won't work, but it seems that yours is working but not finding a suitable volume.
You might try reformatting the BC partition with BootCamp assistant as FAt32 and seeing if that works, but you are limited to 32GB if you do that, but it would be a good test. Vista should then format it into NTFS.
Be sure that your Leopard OS is fully backed up because stuff happens when you keep fooling around with partitions.

  • SAP R/3 4.6C Installation in HPUX with 4 sapdata files

    Hi all,
We are building a sandbox system to perform our upgrade.
While installing SAP R/3 4.6c, in HPUX/Oracle 10g, we need to have only 4 sapdata filesystem:
    Oracle/DV1/sapdata1
    Oracle/DV1/sapdata2
    Oracle/DV1/sapdata3
    Oracle/DV1/sapdata4.
But while doing the installation it creates sapdata5 & sapdata6. But we don't want to have sapdata5 & sapdata6.
We need to do the installation within the 4 sapdata filesystems itself.
Can any one help me how and where to edit, so that the installation will fit withing the 4 sapdata FS itself.
    Thanks
    Senthil

    Hi Srini,
If you are using sapinst tool you should be able to delete unavailable sapdatas easily in ur sapinst input DB parameters section, I also had the  same issue.
Optional, you may be already aware it can also be solved by creating sapdata directories under /oracle/<SID>/... at OS level but be careful data files created will fall under your parent dir.
    regards,
    Vamshi.

  • Does the Solaris 10 installer Fdisk preserve 'unknown' partitions?

    Hi there,
I am trying to install Solaris 10 - I have a CD to boot from, but can't tell exactly which release it is - sometime in 2008 I think...
In any case, I am attempting install on my LG laptop along-side an XP installation.
I've been searching for hours and nowhere can I find an answer to the simple question above.
I just want to be sure I am not going to kill my XP install by clobbering it with fdisk.
The installer screen I am talking about looks just like the one you find here:
    http://www.blastwave.org/docs/step-059.html
My execution of the installer reveals 2 existing partitions (my XP partition and a little one - size 205Mb which I think contains some laptoppy stuff). Both are labelled 'unknown'.
I left about 30Gb free when I installed XP so I could setup a dual boot with Solaris. The third box in the fdisk installer screen is this empty partition, and is conveniently labelled with 'Solaris' by the installer. The last (4th) partition is labelled as 'unused' and has 0 bytes allocated. I intend to steal a few Mb from the 'Solaris' partition and create a FAT32 partition here...as this seems to be the recommended approach...
Anyhow, if anyone out there can help me out I'd be really appreciative - I think the answer is probably yes, it will preserve them, but I'd like to be certain as I don't want to have to reinstall XP.
    Thx in advance.

    Hi Paul,
thanks for your response. Windows install disk gives partitioning options - don't think it comes with a fdisk util on its own (as an OS that is) though. I had already left part of the disk unpartitioned when I used the fdisk for the windows install, so I could install Solaris...
In the end I decided to be brave and click next - the answer is that Yes it does preserve them - at least it did in my case. I now have a dual boot system. You can have the points for taking the time to bother with my silly question.
    :-D
Have a few other issues to resolve with it now - but at least it's up and running, and I managed to get network connectivity - just not thru my wireless yet - hopefully I'll be able to.
Much fun for me to have - cheers!

  • If you buy a new Mac with Lion already installed, you're SOL

I bought a new 27" iMac i7 this week with Lion preinstalled. My understanding was that, since I now own a copy of Lion, I can install it at no extra cost on my other computers. Not true. I just got off the phone with Apple. I have to buy Lion from the App Store for my MacBook Pro, and then I can share it with another computer. Now, the only other computer I have it the new iMac, which already has Lion on it. You would think that, after spending $2500 on a new computer, you wouldn't have to buy the OS again.
Don't get me wrong. I love Apple and have owned Macs since 1985. But this makes me pretty unhappy. I know it's only $30, but it's the principle of the thing. There's no installer app on my iMac or I'd just copy it over to my laptop. And since you don't get installation discs anymore with new computers, I can't even install it that way.
    Boo hiss! :-)

I haven't had any problems with the new iMac playing videos. So far, so good.
As for having the OS preinstalled and no discs in the box, I recently made a recovery disk, just in case I need to reinstall the OS, since there isn't an install app anywhere on the hard drive (at least that I can find). Now, in 27 years of owning Macs, I've never had to reinstall an OS (don't ask about my Windows machines, though!). But there could always be a first time, right? Best to be prepared, just in caes...
Also, I bought my iMac at Small Dog Electronics. I'm very happy with the price I got there, but *they* are the ones who told me I could also install the OS on my MacBook Pro--at no extra cost. When I called Apple I found out differently. So I've let Small Dog know that isn't correct and that they shouldn't be telling people that. I think the reason this happened is because my local store just opened in the past few months, and the employees there aren't as saavy and well-trained as Apple Store employees. This was my first experience not buying directly from Apple, but all in all it's been a good one.
Larry, I got the trackpad, too. After some initial hiccups getting used to it, I absolutely love it.
