Boot the mini into TD mode
Connect it to the "other" Mac
Insert the install disk in the "other" Mac
Start the installer which will reboot the "other" Mac
Once the "other" Mac has restarted and is running from the install disk, you should be able to select the Mini's drive (the FW disk) as the install destination. If not, go into the Disk Utility (under the "Utilities" menu) and check out the FW disk. You may need to "repair" it, repair permissions or reformat it depending on the condition of the disk and the type of partition it contains.

  • Moving a hard drive from one Mac Mini to another to create a twin Mini Mac

I have been a PC user since before the stone age, or atleast since the comadore 64, Then I upgraded to a PC with an actual hard drive. It was huge, 12 MB!
along the road I had purchased 3 Mac laptops. All were new and I just never got used to either so I ended up selling both. About 6 years ago I got an iPhone. I have had ipods since they came out and I liked the data integration. Then an appleTV with a HD now 3 more apple TV 3s. Got an iPad 2 followed by an iPad 3 . Last fall my 2 year old 1500 dollar sony lap top with an i7 processor just would not power up at all, It was a nice PC but to be honest I used to be a Sony fan byt after losing 3 out of 4 laptops, and reading about Apples Intel processors, I thought I would try one more time. What a terriffic way to wean off of windows. I am running OSX Maverics with windows 8.1 on bootcamp. I still need windows for a few programs I am running.
One of my biggest thrills is the amount of inexpensive and even free software available on a Mac. And when a new OS comes out, I dont nmeed to fork up a minimum of 2 to 400 dolars to upgrade. Most microsoft software is very expensive.
Im saying all that to say this,
I want/need one more computer in my shop. Prior to my Mac purchase I had 2 PCs running with Windows 8-8.1 Lots o people bitched about the huge change from Windows 7 to Windows 8.1 but personally I love it. Its actually more like a mac now than windows. With  running a SSD Windows 8.1 is very fast.
So when I got my Mac Mini with a 1TB hard drive, I took my 250 gb SSD out of my Sony and reformated it. Used Copy clone to clone the Mac OS to the SSD. Very fast and perfect copy. (since then I purchased Copy clone and every day at 11:30 PM CC copyies my SSD Mac Partition to the original HD.
I still havent completely figured how to do the same with my Boot Camp partition. but I purchased Win Clone. There is a fairly long process to seting up the samy system as I have for cloning my mac which is as easy as copying a folder.
    Sorry for rambeling
Here is my question. Now that I have a perfectyly cloned hard drive of the actujal hard drive I use inmy Mac Mini, I want to purchase another mac mini, 2012 same as mine. I have an i7 but to save a little I may go with an I5. Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly for me when it only took a few minutes. (if this is possible why would anyone ever buy a PC again. I realize a Mac Mini is not the most powerful computer out there, But as tech goes, Its about the most powerful Desk top I have ever owned. I have a secone 120GB SSD that I could then copy both OS systems to. I save all my data extrernally via USB 3 or Firewire 800 to a Promise DS 4600 with 2-3tb hard drives and room for 2 more. I mirrior these right now and have plenty of storage for me
I will use a 1 TB external drive for my shop mac,
Truthfullyu if this works, My mini macs can keep procreating other mini macs all the same configuration
Something I just never could conceve before with a PC. Each PC setup was its own Labor of love and hate. and as much backing up you do, forgfet it, Its still a major deal when one crashes! Hope I didnt run on too long
    Thanks

Can I take that cloned hard drive and just plug it into my new Mac Mini and Viola I have two computers set up perfectly
    Yes.

  • Transferring data from one mac pro to another with firewire

I have owned an ibook G4 and a Macbook pro 17 in. The Macbook Pro 17 in was a 2006 and the video went out on it/conveniently 1 mo after Applecare expired!. I took it in and the genius bar sent it out to the depot but they determined it was damaged and refused to fix it (it had a tiny dent on the lid that I do not know how it got there unless the mag adapter did it while in the case). So I lost a $3k laptop. I now have a new Macbook Pro 15 in just purchased and I transferred all the data from the ibook G4 and the 17 in. by firewire using migration assistant. The problem is I have about 5 accounts now because it would not let me transfer things under the same name so I had to rename accounts and create new ones in order to transfer stuff. My question is, how do I go about incorporating all the accounts into one on this new 15 inch MBPro?

Target disk mode may be what you're looking for. Hold down the "T" key while booting. See the Apple support article for more information.

  • I can no longer access Twitter from ONE Mac Mini on my network

Almost every time I try to go to twitter.com on one of my Mac Minis in either Safari or Firefox, I am unable to.
    On Safari I get:
Safari can’t open the page “https://twitter.com/” because Safari can’t connect to the server “twitter.com”.
    On Firefox I get:
    Unable to connect
Firefox can't establish a connection to the server at twitter.com.
    * The site could be temporarily unavailable or too busy. Try again in a few
    moments.
    * If you are unable to load any pages, check your computer's network
    connection.
    * If your computer or network is protected by a firewall or proxy, make sure
that Firefox is permitted to access the Web.
Every now and then, about 1 out of 10 times, the page will load but it won't update my feed and I am unable to tweet. The twitter app from the app store can not connect either for some reason. Twitter.com works on all other computers on my network except this one. I have cleared my cache, history, cookies, and nothing is working. Anyone have any ideas what the problem could be?

I had this problem with my MacBook Pro. The twitter app would time out trying to connect to the server, and safari just refused to load the twitter web page. All my other apple devices on the other hand worked perfectly. I cleared the cache, history, rebooted, and added the twitter app to my security list, to allow all access. It still didn't do the trick. I gave up for awhile hoping it would fix itself. I took my computer to a coffee shop and the twitter app worked. So I figured, I would reboot my time capsule, just for the heck of it, and It worked..!

  • Switching Leopard from one mac to another

I am currently running a PowerMac G5 with Leopard installed and a MacBook with Tiger. Due to our IT department cracking down, I will have to put my G5 into storage for a few months.
I was wondering If it was legal to remove leopard from the G5 (and reinstall the original Tiger) and install the Leopard on the Macbook.
I was waiting for Snow Leopard to come out before upgrading the Macbook, now I would wait to upgrade the G5 at the end of the year.
Any opinions or free legal advise??
    Thanks in advance.

Yes. Assuming it's a retail copy of Leopard that allows for use on one computer at a time, your plan is legal.
Edit: I type too slow. Kappy beat me to it.

  • Can I restore one of my mac minis to another with identical hardware?

Hi folks.  I'm trying to get my mac mini 2011 working that I did not take a backup of.  I have an identical mac mini as well.  Can I use a time machine backup from that mini to restore to my messed up one?  Thanks.

    Sure

  • Can I move hard drives from one Mac Pro to another?

I have two mid-2010 Mac Pros that I work with daily - one 8-core on 10.7.3 and one 12-core on 12.7.4.  I would like to take all of the drives out of one Mac Pro and put them in the other and vice versa, essentially trading their content.  It probably sounds pointless, but I would like to build the more powerful one out from scratch, and right now the less powerful one is nearly empty.
Can I simply shut off both machines and swap all of the drives in one for all of the drives in the other?  I would keep them in the same bays in the machine I'm trading them with, but I'm unsure if I will screw something else up.

I've moved drives from a Mac Pro 1,1 to a 5,1 and they were able to boot the newer Mac, but to ensure that the OS was configured for the newer machine, I ran the appropriate combo updater once the drive was installed. If you're planning to stick with the drive rotation, doing that shouldn't hurt and might help even though the machines are of the same vintage. Note, however, that some commercial software keys in on machine specifics and/or the serial number to prevent piracy, so swapping drives can cause other problems.

  • How do i copy playlists from one Mac computer to another?

I have my iTunes on my iMac and I wish to copy the music AND the playlists to my new MacBook Air - what is hte most effective way to do this and keep them both updated and synchronized?

I assume you mean you want to copy them from one iCloud account/ID to another.  If they're synced with iCloud go to Settings>iCloud, turn Contacts to Off, when prompted choose to Keep on My [iDevice], then delete the iCloud account, sign into the other iCloud account, turn Contacts back to On and when prompted choose Merge.  Note: when you delete the account it only deletes the account from the device, not from iCloud.  If you then want to go back to your previous account, delete the iCloud account from your device, when prompted choose Delete From My [iDevice], sign back into your other account, turn your iCloud data syncing back to On, and when prompted, choose Merge.

  • Mac Mini won't start-up (while DVD drive makes mechanical noises).

Here is what is going on:
When I turn on my Mac Mini, the DVD drive starts making mechanical noises, exactly the kind of noise it makes while grabbing a CD. It keeps doing this for a while, until it stops. The hard drive never starts spinning and the display remains dark. I have tried the following:
    1) Booting from the Leopard DVD: the behavior remains almost the same. The DVD spins, the noises stop but nothing else happens.
    2) After manually removing the DVD (nothing else worked) I tried reseting the SMS. I also tried the PMU procedure. As a result my mac mini became a powerful fancy fan.
    3) After taking apart the unit (warranty period is over), I even changed the HD (I had another one) but the behavior remained the same.
I simply don't get it. I believe this happened after a power outage.

If it were me ... and if there is more free space on the external hard drive than there is "stuff" on the Mini that needs to be saved ... I would probably connect the Mini to the G5 with a firewire cable, connect the external to the G5, and startup the Mini in Target Disk Mode (which will mount it on the G5's desktop.) Then I'd rescue everything of value from the Mini's hard drive by copying it in small chunks to the external drive.
Then I'd shut everything down, disconnect the cables, and boot the the Mini from the Leopard disc and do a clean install. Then I'd bring the relevant data files back from the external drive.
(The actual details might vary slightly.)
(I see Nick had the same simultaneous thought -- though he expresses the process more clearly than I.)

  • Can i migrate my files and programs from one mac book to another

    I have 2 macbook pros 13.3  april 2010 release
one has a 250gb drive and the other 500gb
both are running lion - after upgrading from snow leopard
I have al my adobe creative suite and mac office on the machine with 250gb hard drive - i want to transfer all my files and applications including adobe and mac office to the 500gb machine - can this be done via migration assistant? are there things i need to check etc before doing this
i am assuming the 250gb will be empty afterwards- i am not expecting to have 2 copies of the files and applications
Thanks for taking a look at my question

You can do that through Migration Assistant without any problem. See > http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4889
There are different ways to connect both Macs in order to transfer the files. As both computers have got FireWire, I recommend you to buy a FireWire cable, connect it to both computers and run Migration Assistant. Doing this, the transfer will be faster and much reliable than with Ethernet or Wi-Fi. Also, check > http://pondini.org/OSX/MigrateLion.html

  • How to copy songs from one mac profile to another mac profile

I have 3 profiles on my Imac. One for myself and 2 for my daughters. My daughter has purchased songs to her profile. I would like to listen to them also.  They do not show up in my profile.   How do i copy them to my profile. We use one apple ID and  all purchase music through the same apple ID.
    thanks.

Are they connected via a network? If so, copy the windows music folder to public and the mac should be able to copy them off there. If not, you will need a flash drive/cd/hard drive to transport them to the other.
If you have a scattered library like most, you will need to go to tools>options>library and click on the setting to rearrange media files according to rip settings. This should consolidate them much like iTunes does in your music folder so you don't have to go searching for them all.
