Installation of new hardware results in slow performance.

Macbook Pro Late 2008 4 GB Ram 2.53 ghz
Upgraded to:
8 GB Corsair Ram
256 GB Crucial M4 SSD
(I just installed Lion onto the new drive and started fresh)
After installing these two components in my Macbook Pro I noticed some serious performance degradation.
The pinwheel pops up every couple of minutes, some times everytime I try to do anything with the the macbook. Performance is fine otherwise.
Starting up the machine can take as little as 30 seconds and as much as 3 minutes. Sometimes I'm stuck on the apple logo for a good 3 minutes or so before start up.
The performance issues occur at random. Sometimes it starts up fine and is fine throughout the entire time that I am using it, sometimes it runs miserably, more often than not.
I've attempted reinstalling my old RAM, this resulted in no improvement.
Using my old HDD the Macbook runs fine, I've concluded the culprit is the M4.
Some things I've noticed:
Starting up in the recovery drive and repairing disk permissions and the disk seems to correct this problem for a short period of time
Reinstalling the OS fixes everything, however, after restarting the machine the issues arrise again.
Upgrading to Mountain Lion produces the same effect
Macbook will not let me use TRIM when using The TRIM Enabler. Have not attempted to do this manually.
The activity monitor does not display any unusual behavior
The question is, what is wrong with my SSD?

Not kidding, at all
Disk permissions returned this:
Warming SUID file "System/Library/CoreS...as been modified and will not be repaired.
ACL found but not expected on "Private/Var/Root/Library"
ACL found but not expected on "Private/Var/Root/Library"
Permissions verification complete
Repaired both disk Ann's permissions (took nearly an hour, no luck)
Startup items that are checked are:
iTunes Helper
I downloaded and ran the TRIM enabler however it kept saying that the patch was already installed and was either not supported by the m4 or that I needed to restart
Something's to note:
Problem became serious when I:
A) Attempted to use time machine
B) when I moved about 8 gbs of music from a thumb drive to my solid state drive

  • New VM Server - Very Slow Performance with QuickBooks

    Hello all,
    Oh the dreaded performance issues!
Okay we currently have a virtual server hosted with a different company - it has two VPU's and 8GB RAM.  The contract is about to expire so we're switching to a Microsoft Azure VM.  This server is running Windows Server 2008 R2 - main purpose is
to host QuickBooks Enterprise v15 - with 10 users connecting via RemoteApp and/or RD.
So for the new Azure server we selected the A3 (4 cores/7GB RAM) option - running Windows Server 2008 R2 - I know old O/S - but still need for now.  We also attached a new 250GB disk for additional storage of data/programs.  The test users noticed
performance issues right away so we temporarily upgraded it to the A4 option (8 cores/14GB RAM) and although it is better there are still performance issues.  For example to run a statement report in QuickBooks - viewing both connections side-by-side
    - it is 2x faster on the current "live" server we have hosted with the current hosting provider.  On the Azure VM we also tested installing QuickBooks on the C:\ drive and then on the attached 250GB disk - the F:\ drive - same performance results
    on both.
This is a new VM...fresh install....just so strange why it would be slower than the 8GB server.
Does anyone have any ideas on where we can start to troubleshoot this?
    Thanks so much!

I understand the performance seen by end users are low. However, do you know what is really wrong? Do you see Azure VM using almost 80% of CPU & RAM, if not adding more RAM & CPU may not really help you.
    - How is the CPU usage of your on-premise node vs Azure VM
    - How is the memory usage of your on-premise node vs Azure VM
Do you have any specific characteristics for Disk IO requirement? Can you check IOPS on on-premise vs Azure?

  • Does apple provide professional Installation for new hardware?

I want to know if i can bring my Imac 21.5 mid 2014 for new hard drive installation to an apple store. Is there a service for that? I know they have a repair service, does it provide for that as well? I do have applecare coverage, I'm not sure if that counts for anything other than if my imac gets damaged.

AppleCare provides warranty service. If there is a problem because of manufacturing defect, that will be repaired.
You can contact Apple.  AppleCare: 1-800-275-2273

  • Printer redirection Slow performance

We have a Remote Desktop Server 2008R2.
When a user logs in (trough TS Gateway) with Printer redirection enabled (Using Easy Print method) the performance is very bad.
It's not printing that is slow, it's the performance of the RDP Session/server
For our test we disabled AntiVirus on the server.
Fox example: A user logs in with Local Printers, opening a small Doc file takes about 10 seconds. If the user logs of and logs in without local printers the doc file opens within a second.
Also generally everything is much faster without printer redirection.
The server is fully updated and we are using the most recent RDP Client.
The server is connected to an internet connection with 50/5 Mb Down/Up speed.

    Hi,
I did a couple of tests:
    - Step1: Removed all local printers, logged on with printer redirection enabled on the RDP client. Result: No performance problems with opening DOC files.
    - Step2: Added printer 1, logged on. Result: Slow performance with opening DOC files.
    - Step3: Removed printer 1, added printer2, logged on. Result: Slow performance with opening DOC files.
    - Step4: Repeated Step3 with all printers. Result: Slow performance with opening DOC files.
So it doesn't matter which printer we add, it always results in slow performance. The printers are all from different brands. I happens with all user accounts, also with users that are Domain Admins.
    OS:
RDS Server: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
    Client: Windows Server 2008 R2 Standard SP1
We monitored the CPU and Memory usage while starting Word, the cpu's doesn't use more then 4% utilization and the memory usage is low.
The Remote Desktop Services server has Office 2003 installed with SP3. We cannot upgrade Office to 2007/2010 because it's incompatible with our database.
Can it be that Word 2003 is loading the redirected printers while opening a document what is causing the slow performance?
    Kind regards,
    Bas

  • Migrating OS X install to new hardware?

I've just gotten a Mac Pro to replace my Mac Mini. Is there a supported method of moving an OS X installation onto new hardware rather then having to reinstall and reconfigure all my software and settings?

When you turn on your Macbook Pro it will ask you if you own another Mac and it will start the migration either over the network or via FW as the MB Pro still has this port.
If you are already set up then go to your HD>applications>utilities and then migration assistant

  • Slow performance after installation of new OS-X

I don't know if anyone else has been experiencing the same problem as me, but it seemed to occur after I installed the new OS-X.
My MacBook Pro has gone stremely slow and it seems to be related to MAIL. I thought that the standard MAIL program that comes with MAC was the problem, so I installed Postbox and that seemed to work for a while (1 day or 2) and then it was the same. It's not just email programs that are slow, but all programs.
Click and wait seconds (10, 20, 30 sec) just for a program to open. Moving between files is so slow. I feel like I'm using Windows again.
I'm no expert, but when I look at MEMORY usage, out of 4GB I'm using 3.8GB. My Virtual Memory is 4.76GB. See screen shot below.
I would apprecaite if anyone can help me resolve what the problem is.
    Thanks
    Richard Giuliano

First, back up all data immediately unless you already have a current backup. If you can't back up, stop here. Do not take any of the steps below.
    Step 1
This diagnostic procedure will query the log for messages that may indicate a system issue. It changes nothing, and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    syslog -k Sender kernel -k Message CReq 'GPU |hfs: Ru|I/O e|find tok|n Cause: -|NVDA\(|pagin|timed? ?o' | tail | awk '/:/{$4=""; print}' | open -ef
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). I've tested these instructions only with the Safari web browser. If you use another browser, you may have to press the return key.
The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Normally the command will produce no output, and the window will be empty. If the TextEdit window (not the Terminal window) has anything in it, stop here and post it — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the TextEdit window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
    Step 2
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
Run Software Update. If there's a firmware update, install it.
If you're booting from an aftermarket SSD, see whether there's a firmware update for it.
If you have a portable computer, check the cycle count of the battery. It may be due for replacement.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane. See whether there's any change.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
If you have a MacBook Pro with dual graphics, disable automatic graphics switching in the Energy Saverpreference pane for better performance at the cost of shorter battery life.
    Step 3
When you notice the problem, launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the View menu or the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for User, System, and Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the Memory tab. What value is shown in the bottom part of the window for Swap used?
Next, select the Disk tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in andWrites out.)
    Step 4
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combinationcommand-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

    This is OK
    class-map match-any VOIP
    match ip dscp ef
    Add this
    class-map match-any VOIP-signalling
    match dscp af31
    match dscp cs3
Change the policy-map to reflect the changes
    policy-map VOIP-QOS

    bandwidth 16
    class VOIP
    priority 24
    class class-default
    fair-queue 256
    random-detect dscp-based
The bandwidth is meant for 4 concurrent phone conversations so adjust up as needed. The priority is based on my own testing so take it as you may.
The most important statement is "fair-queue 256", by default you only get 16 queues. Allowing for 256 queues only uses a modest amount of memory so its a simple low impact choice for the router and allows more conversations between devices without interruption.
Upping the number of queues in your policy would be the best and most important item for your performance problem, next of couse to coercing EIGRP to load balance the T1s properly.
    Brian
P.S. Create a loopback interface for the ip unnumbered use, cause if the Fa0/0 goes down everything goes down and you can't telnet in from anywhere to look at it. Eliminate the following items from the config by using "no" in fromt of them, a bit of research will tell you why, and start you toward eliminating a few other items.

  • ODS activation failures after new hardware installation..urgent

    Hi All,
I am working in PRD.There are 10 process chains which i need to monitor daily.Daily ODS activation fails in 4 of the 10 chains. The error message for two of the failures are,
Task 0040 during SID specification without confirmation
and for another process it is showing "DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR" error.
manually I am doing steps and the activation is successful. These type of errors we are getting after the new hardware installation.
Could anyone let me know are there any patches to be applied inorder to avoid such type of errors.
Please advice me what to do.
    Thanks,
    Manjula

What is the patch your currently on at the moment.
It could also be some of the settings in RZ11 have been changed. You need to work with your basis people to resolve this.
DBIF_RSQL_SQL_ERROR is a common problem and usually due to not enough processor's available and the database gettings into a knot.
Check SM21 and ST22 for the more information on the issue.

  • Ridiculously Slow Performance when Movie Scoring - brand new macbook

Hello there guys ! Sorry for my bad english, i will try to do my best.
The title almost says it all. I have a brand new Intel Core Duo Macbook (White, 2ghz, 512 ram, I haven't added any extra ram or anything).
The machine is blazing fast, I am really loving the experience. But when it comes to using a feature I would love to use everyday, it disappointed me. The movie score feature in Garage Band 3. So, I create a very simple movie in iMovie HD 6, capturing video from my fireware camera.
It is a very simple video, no soundtracks, just the original sound that came with the camcorder footage. No stills, reverse, slow-motion, effects or anything. Plain video with sound, just the way it came from the camcorder.
The problem is when creating a movie scoring project with that footage in garageband 3 , the performance is RIDICULOUSLY SLOW. I mean, I press space and the movie strats playing after 1,5 seconds, and the video is halting every other second. It is so laggy that when i press space again to stop the video, the motion continues for another 1,5 seconds until it pauses.
There's absolutely no way to do any work in conditions like that. And the strange thing is that when using garage band to do other stuff, or when working in iMovie with that same movie there's no lag at all. I have even edited 30 minute long videos with effects and soundtracks in iMovie and it was blazing fast, no lag, no halting.
But in Garagaband even the simplest of all videos gets this ultra-slow performance, and it makes me wonder why.
    - I have tried desabling recording on the audio track in garageband. I have tried to lock the track. I have done all the steps in the optimizing garage band performance in the help. I don't have firevault activated.
Any help ? Does anyone have a macbook just like mine that is able of doing moving scoring ? Because EVERYTHING ELSE is ultra fast, including video and audio editing, but when movie scoring it *****.
    Apple Macbook 13inch 2.0ghz Core Duo 512 60GB White SuperDrive   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

Ha! It's funny really - you say it all yourself; no extra ram, it doesn't come with enough to run Pro Apps and when you start to use the Scoring feature you are accessing two different functions - playing movies and music tracks - movies are always a stress unless they are very small and the Right Codec - so first up - what format is your movie? Do you have Quicktime Pro? if the answer is No - get it, it's not expensive and it gives your machine many extra abilities - you can then convert your footage to something easy to play.
How many tracks are you working with?
Get more RAM - MacIntel or MacPro needs 4-6 gigs to multi-task happily - with only the base load of RAM it can't.
I have a DP 2 Ghz G5, no where near as fast as yours but I have 4.5 GBs of RAM and a fast graphics card with 512Mbs VRAM - this means Motion and FCP can fly.
We are about to get a MacPro 2.66 Dual with 6 GBs RAM, essential.
    Hope this helps.

  • Slow performance of a new laptop

    Hey hi,
Can anyone please help me to know the reason why a new laptop runs slows.

You wouldn't have age problems on a new computer, but you could take a look at what programs you might not be interested in keeping. That includes an anti-virus if you are using one other than the one that is part of Windows.

  • XFI Installation Issue "Found New Hardware&qu

Hello technical support, I recently bought a XFI Fatality sound card on 0/07 and recieved it 0/0. I didnt use the drivers on the CD, instead i went on the website and download the drivers their for my sound card, since I figured that the ones on the CD are old. My sound seems to be working fine and great, but every time, I log on, a message pops up saying new hardware found. But I has sound and everything is installed for the sound card. I removed my old Realtek and cleaned the drivers out for a complete fresh install of the XFI sound card drivers. So my problem is that it that a "NEW HARDWARE FOUND" comes up, and in my device manager their is a question mark with an exclamation point which says multimedia audio controller. How do I fix this?

Did you disable your onboard Realtek in the BIOS? If you just removed it from the Device Manager, it'll keep coming back.
Also, is your X-fi working? Have proper sound?

  • Very slow performance; external boot drive the cause?

    Greetings.
I bought a 500 GB Hitachi drive for my iMac intending to install it myself. But, alas, I have an iSight iMac and I think it's beyond my ability to do the job. A Mac dealer nearby can do it for me, but wants the computer for two or three days, even thought the installation takes about an hour. They will not make an appointment for me to come in with it and wait.
So I installed it the drive in an OWC Mercury Elite case, cloned the original drive, and have been booting from the Hitachi via Firewire 400. Just about everything is running at well under previous speeds. Lightroom now takes as much as two to five minutes to spool a large file for printing and sometimes does not even send the file to the printer (in fairness, the latter issue happened sometimes with the internal drive – I wrote about it here before – but at least it didn't take a long time to spool the file, which has to happen each time I click "print" until at last it actually goes to the printer).
I'm getting slow performance from Safari (4.1.3), Mail (2.1.3), Lighroom 2, Photoshop (CS3). I can't say I've noticed problems elsewhere, but I rarely use other applications.
I have done all the usual maintenance tasks, besides those the computer does automatically. Repaired permissions. Emptied caches. Burned sage. Etc.
If this is the inevitable result of running from an external disk, then I'll have to brave the installation or pay someone to do it (which I would do immediately if I knew someone who would do it "while-u-wait").
If, however, this sounds like booting from the external drive should not be the problem, and there is something I might do to speed things up, I'd be grateful for your suggestions.
    As always, thank you.
    Leonard B.

Too bad about the site redesign. I had a draft of this message started, then got busy. Now I have no idea where to look for it. (And what happened to the Preview function?)
ANYWAY…  I talked to a tech person at Other World Computing about the problem. He was of the opinion that the iMac SHOULD be showing some slower response if booted from the external drive, but that maybe the sluggishness in this case was excessive. He had me run a hardware scan to see whether there were any bad blocks. After 24 hours, Speed Tools reported no problems. So now I have run every diagnostic and repair tool I know of and every one that was suggested (every one that I own, that is), and the computer is still hesitating so much that I just have to get up and walk away from it sometimes in order to stay sane.
I am booting from the original hard drive when I have to do extended internet research (Safari being the biggest speed offender), but run the iMac from the external drive when I have to do photo editing, since all my preferences, Lightroom libraries, etc., are located there. If I had the time to figure out just where the essential, and relevant, system and application files are located, I suppose that I could copy them and move them onto the internal drive. Then I could just use the external for storage of the image files (can't do that on the internal; there's not enough space). However, if what is going on (slowness issue) is indicative of a faulty drive, I'd rather not use it at all, even as a storage or backup drive.
Any thoughts? Do you suppose this might be a problem with the computer, not with the new drive? I'd hate to ask OWC to exchange it (even if they would do that) and then find out I've got the same trouble.
    Thanks again in advance.
    Leonard

  • NI-DAQmx 8.3.0f0 installed but Found New Hardware Wizard shows up when plugging in a USB-6008

I have NI-DAQmx Device Driver 8.3.0f0 installed with LabVIEW 8.2 but when I plug in a NI USB-6008 I see the "Found New Hardware Wizard" in Windows XP.  Since the DAQmx driver is installed shouldn't Windows recognize the device immediately?
I cancel the driver and I get the taskbar message "A problem occurred during hardware installation.  Your device may not work properly."
The USB-6008 does not appear under Devices and Interfaces in MAX.
    Help would be appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Dave

Ahh, I thought Windows performed an automatic search after cancel is clicked.
I clicked next and allowed Windows to search and it says:
    "Cannot Start this Hardware"
There was a problem installing this hardware: USB-6008
The device cannot start.  (Code 10)
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling the device but the results were the same.
    Any ideas?

  • Slow performance on a iMac 27" (maybe originated by the HDD)

    Hello,
Well, I've had my iMac for 10 months now, but have never really paid attention to its performance since it was my first Mac and I was upgrading from a quite old computer, so it obviously proved to be a far superior machine.
However, I noticed the problem when I started to be more critical with my machine's performance (this triggered by the fact that I bought, some months after, a MacBook Air which flies beyond time and space). Curious about this, I requested a friend to do a benchmark test with Xbench resulting in his machine (another iMac 27” with comparable specs) clearly outperforming mine. Even the Air, with its slower processor and smaller RAM, has a relatively close performance.
Additionally, I have started to notice how the computer takes a long time to start-up and, after the desktop is “layed out”, it takes a lot of time before the machine becomes “responsive” (I usually try to start Mail and Google Chrome as soon as the pointer pops in!) with the final result that I have to wait in company of the beach ball for quite some seconds (half a minute) and even after the application had started, I can still hear the HDD working it as if there would be no tomorrow! And then, it is slooooow. Funnily enough, “tougher” applications like Photoshop or Illustrator don’t seem to have as many problems, relatively speaking.
A little bit on the background info: I have two partitions: one for Bootcamp (since I was migrating from Windows, I had some software that I wanted to use there: Matlab and Office, basically, and then some smaller Windows-only programs).
Derived from the benchmark test, I think I might have isolated the problem to the HDD (not sure though!).
    SO THE QUESTIONS ARE:
    1. How can I verify that the slow performance is due to the HDD being defective/badly configured/etc.?
    2. Has the Windows Bootcamp Partition any effect on my machine’s performance under MacOS? (I would assume not, but you never know!). I have more than 1.3 TB free space left
    3. What kind of corrective measures should I take?
    4. Any other type of advice will be warmly welcome: I will try to do some PRAM and SMC resets but I am not counting on it. I had also ran the disk utilities and there were no permission errors (not so sure what this means, but I’ve read that it is supposed to be good news.)
    5. Any extra info you might need, lemme know!
    Greetz,
    Víctor.
PS: Sorry for the loooong post. I tried to be thorough!

    1. How can I verify that the slow performance is due to the HDD being defective/badly configured/etc.?
    Run Apple Hardware Test: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1509
    2. Has the Windows Bootcamp Partition any effect on my machine’s performance under MacOS? (I would assume not, but you never know!). I have more than 1.3 TB free space left
Probably not but 1.3TB of free space left on the total HD is not enough for OS X, OS X needs a minimum of 10-15% free space! If you mean 1.3TB of Windows space I'd recommend posting that question in the Boot Camp forum.
    3. What kind of corrective measures should I take?
If the drive is failing per the AHT then it's covered by warranty and will need to be replaced. Remember back up!!!!!!!!!!
    4. Any other type of advice will be warmly welcome: I will try to do some PRAM and SMC resets but I am not counting on it. I had also ran the disk utilities and there were no permission errors (not so sure what this means, but I’ve read that it is supposed to be good news.)
Can't hurt, make sure you read the instructions carefully and execute the tests exactly as they are described for Intel based iMacs.
    5. Any extra info you might need, lemme know!
If you no longer have a need for Windows on your iMac I'd recommend removing that partition using Boot Camp Assistant. That may correct your problems.
I would also recommend checking if System Preferences - Startup Disk and see if your internal HD is highlighted as the Startup Disk.
In addition I would recommend checking your Login Items (System Preferences - Accounts - Login Items) and delete any applications you don't need launching at Login.
