Installation of old games from a CD

Hi;
I have a (relatively) new MacBook, and cannot figure out how to install some of my old Windows-compatible games from CD (GTA vice city, Starcraft etc). They do not autorun, and double-clicking "setup.exe" opens a file in Textedit rather than actually installing the program.
Do I need to copy files to my MacBook, or download a program? Or am I doing something wrong?
Cheers
Andy

Unless you can get them to work in CrossOver Games, you need to purchase and install Windows.

Yes, gladly. I am trying to install on a 13" MacBook Pro with OS X 10.8.3. I insert the disk into the SuperDrive. The I work '09 window pops up with two icons: one Tim install and one that says "Read before you install iWork." I double-click on the "Install iWork '09" icon, and a window appears that says, "This package will run a program to determine if the software can be installed." I click "continue" and see "Welcome to the iWork '09 installer." I click on "Continue." The "read me" bullet on the left lights up, and I see "Read before you install. . . ." I click "Continue," then see the software license agreement. When I click on "Continue" again, I am asked to agree, and I do. The window then says, "Standard Install on 'Mackintosh HD" and indicates how much space the program will take.
I click "Install," enter my password, and the installation begins. It goes through a validating phase and begins "writing files." It indicates that installation will take about 30 minutes (although that number fluctuates). After about four minutes it goes to "cleaning up." Then after just a few seconds, the "Summary" bullet on the left lights up and this message appears: "There were errors with the installation. You may want to try installing again." There is a large yellow triangle with an exclamation point in it, and a bold "The installation failed." Below that appears "The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
At that point, a "Close" button is pulsating blue at the bottom of the window.
Sorry for the tedious detail. Anything revealing there?
    Thanks!

  • HT1414 Transfering games from old ipod to new one.

I just go a new IPOD 6.1.3 and have been trying to transfer games from my very old IPOD 4.2.1. I backed up my old ipod to my itunes account and then did a restore on my new ipod.  I also tried resetting my new ipod and just individually transfering the games over. The games will transfer but the data doesn't.  When I click on the games on my new IPOD it's as if I've never played them before.  What am I doing wrong?

You have to restore the new iPod from the backup of the old iPod. If you restore via iTunes all the apps have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup.

  • An old game with no uninstaller, here for good? oh, no.

i have an old (1998) game called carmageddon 2. i bought it and installed it a couple of months ago. since then, ive beaten it many times and am now sick of playing it and i want it off. so, i look to uninstall it and there is no uninstaller. i checked all the files that come on the disk that the game came on. so, i look to see if interplay who made the game can help. i think they've gone out of business, for they havent replied to my emails and thier website looks as though they stopped updating it a long long time ago. so am i stuck with this game? its like a wart thats taking up useful space. is there anyway of wiping this stuff off of my computer?
powerbook   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   a question about an old game running on classic 9

HI, SB. If the file is merely locked, that won't prevent you from putting it into the Trash, and holding down the Option keey when emptying the Trash will dispose of it. If the error message is that the file is "locked or in use", the file may be open or in use by other software, in which case you can't move it to the Trash. Try this: boot to a CD — any bootable CD or DVD will do — and then try moving the file to the Trash and emptying it.
If even that doesn't work, your hard disk directory is probably damaged and needs to be repaired. Boot to your latest OS Installer CD or DVD and open Disk Utility. Run the Repair Disk routine repeatedly until you've gotten two successive "Appears OK" verdicts from it. Then trash the file and empty the Trash.
If you can't get a clean bill of health from Disk Utility, you'll need to use a more powerful disk utility such as DiskWarrior or TechTool Pro to make the necessary repairs.

  • Playing Old Games

I've been trying to play old games on my emac, it has Classic on it, but I can't get Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego to install, the one game I really want to play. lol! Is there a way I can make it work, I am desperate to? I know it was originally made for 7.something but I thought it should be able to install on Classic but it won't. Can I hook up my old G3? Would that work? Any ideas would be greatly appreciated. This is also the only Carmen Game that is not OSX (native).

I will try and boot Classic natively when I get home.
There is no such beast as boot Classic natively. You either boot Mac OS 9, or use Classic. Powerbook G4s with USB ports on the rear of the machine can boot Mac OS 9. Powerbook G4 with USB ports on the side of their keyboards can only use Classic. Mac OS X 10.5 and later don't allow running the Classic environment, but will on Powerbook G4s with USB ports on the rear of the machine allow booting into Mac OS 9.
If your Mac supports booting into Mac OS 9, you will have installed the Mac OS 9 drivers as stated here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TA26834?viewlocale=en_US
and then installed Mac OS 9 that either came bundled with your Mac, or later retail version of Mac OS 9 which looks like * with no update or upgrade on the label. Finally, Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Startup Disk will let you switch to Mac OS 9 by selceting the Mac OS 9 system folder and selecting restart. Macs post the 9.2.1 release can only use their prebundled Mac OS 9 disc or restore discs to install Mac OS 9. Macs released after the July 2002 Jaguar 10.2 release, have a restore installer that installs the Mac OS 9 system folder on their prebundled discs.
If your Mac has 10.4.11 or earlier installed and supports Classic, Apple menu -> System Preferences -> Classic can be set to launch the Classic environment when an application is launched, or your machine boots into Mac OS X, or when you manually select it from the System Preference. That same restriction of installer discs applies, but no Mac OS 9 driver needs to be installed. Unfortunately Classic lacks certain driver support for graphics and sound making some games lack any support whatsoever.

  • Playing an old game on a new Mac

I just bought Quake 3 Arena for my MacBook Pro and when I try to install the game it says the classic environment is not supported and won't allow me to install it. Is there anyway I can install it or will a 12 year old game not play on a new mac?

Just to repeat: He WILL be able to RUN the game on his Mac as there is a Universal Binary version available (I know because I have it and have used it in the week since I've upgraded to Lion). It's just difficult to INSTALL because one has to manually extract files from the installation CD and then locate and install the UB version from wherever the developer stores it on the net. I gave him a link to the application and a link to the germ of some instructions for installing - from the CD - the other bits needed for the application to run.
Here's a little more, but I'm not interested in spending any more time tracking down every little tidbit of information needed for a self-confessed ignoramus (no offense intended) to whack together a 10-year-old game for a brand-new Mac:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/archive/index.php/t-295870.html
"all you need is the pak0.pk3 from your quake disc. put it into the baseq3 subfolder of the universal binary. the pak0.pk3 file should be about 460mb and has all the textures.
you can use ioquake3 if none of the other universal doohickeys work - it worked for me. http://ioquake3.org/"

Carefully follow steps 1-9 outlined by wjosten in this post: https://discussions.apple.com/message/13356770#13356770.  This will not, however, avoid wiping any non-purchased media from your phone (ripped CDs, etc.) as this is only synced one way: from your computer to your phone.  You will have to either rebuild your iTunes library with this content and sync again to restore it to your phone, or purchase 3rd party software to copy it from your phone to iTunes prior to syncing (such as Touch Copy).

  • How can u transfer games from one iPad to another on

I have an older iPad and would like to transfer some games from this one to the new ipad4, is there a way to do this

    Hi Greenpete,
You will need to use the same Apple ID on both devices, hopefully your old iPad runs iOS 5 which will give you access to iCloud.  I'd suggest backing up to iCloud - you'll need wifi to do this, and then when setting up your new iPad, select the option to Restore from iCloud and you should be on your way.
    Hope this helps,
    Steve

  • How to transfer the progress of just one game from one iPad to another iPad

Hi everyone!  When I purchased an iPad Air, I gave my old iPad 3 to a family member who kept one of my games and its progress, but changed every other App to suit his requirements.  My iPad Air has all MY Apps, which are different to the ones on the iPad 3.  Both iPads use my Apple account.
I want to somehow transfer the progress of just the one game from the iPad 3 to the iPad Air and I don't want to back up my iPad Air to be the same as his iPad 3, which I know will transfer the progress of the game, but it will also mean I will  get a load of Apps I don't want and more importantly, lose all my Apps and the progress in all my games.
i.e. can I transfer one game and its progress from one iPad to another without altering/deleting/removing existing Apps on either iPad.
Phew ... hope the above makes some sort of sense to someone!!!
    Thank you

Transferring your prepaid cellular data account depends on your carrier. AT&T lets you move it yourself when you go to Cellular Data in Settings and log into your account with your previous AT&T user name and password. For iPads with Sprint service, you can set up an account on the new iPad and contact Sprint Customer Care (888-211-4727 and go through the menus) to deactivate the old plan and get credit for unused service. For Verizon, call the company’s customer service number for mobile broadband support (800-786-8419) and ask to have your account transferred.

  • HT4539 how to i transfer my games from one ipod to another without starting all over?

can anyone help? i just got the new iPod touch 5th generation, i need to know how to transfer all of my games from my old ipod touch to my new one without starting all over. i want to transfer my games as they are.

Connect the old one to your computer's iTunes and do File > Transfer Purchases (File > Devices > Transfer Purchases on iTunes 11) to make sure that all of the apps are on your computer, then force a backup of the iPod by right-clicking the iPod 'device' and selecting 'backup' and then restore that backup onto your new iPod (that will overwrite anything that you've added to that iPod) - hopefully your games and their progress will be copied over.

  • How do i transfer game from ipad 1 to new ipad and not lose my points

How do I transfer a game from ipad 1 to a newer ipad without losing my points or paid for add ons?

Backup your old iPad, then when you set up the new one, restore it from the backup of your old one. THat should make your new one a near clone of the old one. When I set up my new iPod I restored it from the backup of my old one and kept my Angry Birds progress.

  • How to delete the saved score in a game downloaded from app store for my macbook and restart the game from the beginning ? please help

HOW to delete the saved score in a game downloaded from the app store to restart the game from the begining with fresh scores.
i am unable to do so. please help

In system preferences, create a new account again, using the short name of the "deleted" account. You may be prompted to re-use the old home folder. Log out and log in to test it worked. Then log in as your new admin, and do the delete process again. Don't choose to securely delete this time - just a regular delete.
When you have time to spare, go to Disk Utility, and use the Erase tab to securely erase free space on the drive. This will accomplish the same thing that your originally tried to do. Use the fastest method - anything more secure is a waste of time. You may need to run it overnight - it can take several hours.

I recently got a new iphone but when I restored it in iTunes one of my games that I have played for months RESET. How do I get my old game info back?

If you made a backup before you restored it you can restore your iPhone from a backup and your game data should be restored.  When you connect your iPhone in iTunes you can right click on it in the sidebar and select restore from backup.

I have purchased a new printer.  It is the same make as my old printer.  How do I remove the old printer from my Mac?

you could see if that make of printer has an uninstaller (may come with the installer)
or go to preferences, print and fax, and press the minus key   (  -   ) which should maybe remove it. Or ,do a a find, then type in the make of printer, and anything that looks like a printer driver for that make, well, maybe it's gotta go
    just an idea
