Installation of SharePoint 2013 three-tier farm installation

Is it an actual requirement that WFE1 and APP1 be separate servers (virtual or physical), or is recommended best practice?
And more than that, I was going to make DC1, WFE1, and APP1 all reside on the same virtual server.  I'll take the spitballs, but again the question is:  does this violate a software/hardware system requirement as well as recommended best practice,
or just the latter?
Thanks.

For SharePoint 2013, it is
not supported to install SharePoint on a DC. While you can also place all VMs on a single virtual server host, you do need to take into consideration that you're putting all of your eggs in a single basket. If that host fails, so does everything with it.
Consider clustering your virtual hosts with shared storage to at least provide failover capabilities.

  • SharePoint 2013 three-tier architecture

Hi all, I am going to install SharePoint 2013 in a three-tier farm environment.
I understand that the only difference between web server and app server is whether or not the "Microsoft SharePoint Foundation Web Application" service application is running or not. If yes = web server, if no = app server. App server is also where
CA is installed. Both web server and app server will have connection to DB. When web server serves web page requests from users, it will go to DB directly to get the page content.
However, the real three-tier architecture actually means that only app server should have access to DB. Web server will get the information it needs from the app server.
Is my understanding correct so far? Why is there a difference between three-tier architecture when it is applied in SharePoint context?

No, all SharePoint servers directly interface with databases for services that they host (with some exceptions). 3 tier just means you have a "WFE" which end users interact with, and it doesn't matter what services are on that "WFE",
another SharePoint server which may do the same or other things, but users don't directly interact with, and of course the SQL Server.

  • Sharepoint 2013 Foundation three tier farm with two Webservers in NLB

    Heloo,
I have been strugling with a problem the last htree days.
I have instelled and configured a sharepoint 2013 three tier farm with Sharepoint 2013 Foundation and MS SQL 2014 Express. This is a Test Farm and all the servers are Windows 2012 R2.
I have one SQL Server, one Application Server and two Webservers. The tow web servers are configured with Multicasting NLB. The NLB name is "sharepoint.ws.domain.net". The IP of the NLB is also in our DNS Zone.I have made a Web Application with
the name "sharepoint.ws.domain.net" on port 80 (NLB name) and a Site collection with the same name.
Now whene I am working on the Sharepoint Site I get very offen a login Window or I get the message "An error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 0".
The error "An error occurred while processing the request on the server. The status code returned from the server was: 0" comes when I try to create a sub Site (most with no Permissions inheritance)... but not allways. I also get  sometimes
the same message when I upload files (MS Office documents and PDF files).
The login Windows comes whene I am navigating throw the Sites... but also not allways.I go to the Site with an IE11 and the Site is also in the Intranet security sites.
Can you help me on this one...
    Kind Regards
    Ioannis Kyriakidis

With no hostname on the Web Application, you have to create Host-named Site Collections. So that complicates things a bit.
As far as NLB setup, you create Web Applications the same way you would otherwise. NLB is simply installed on both Web Servers and placed into the NLB VIP (virtual IP). The DNS A record points at the VIP.
Also set up your Windows NLB using Unicast instead of Multicast. If you have certain types of switches that block unicast ARP from multiple clients, e.g. Cisco, you may have to make an exception for them (e.g. http://www.cisco.com/c/en/us/support/docs/switches/catalyst-6500-series-switches/107995-microsoft-nlb.html).

  • SQL Server 2014 PowerPivot installation on SharePoint 2013

    Hello:
I saw many references on the topic but one thing is still not clear.
    Is
spPowerPivot.msi installer for SharePoint 2013 is another package that has to run after the
“SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint” installation on SharePoint server via SQL Server setup?
Or spPowerPivot.msi is the same thing as “SQL Server PowerPivot
for SharePoint” from SQL Server setup?
    I run
spPowerPivot.msi on my SharePoint server, but don't see the SQL Server PowerPivot Configuration manager created.
    Please advise
    -Jeff

SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint is the SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular Mode instance with the instance name POWERPIVOT. The spPowerPivot.msi installs the proxy that connects to the SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular Mode instance. You run the
SQL Server PowerPivot for SharePoint installation on the server that you want to run the SQL Server Analysis Services Tabular Mode instance whereas you run the spPowerPivot.msi installation on all of the servers in your SharePoint farm (except the database
server.) For SQL Server 2014, this is
a separate download and is not included in the SQL Server 2014 installation media.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you failed to create a new farm.
It seems that several issues exist in IIS. Please go to IIS manager > each site > advanced settings > general > ID to see if it is beyond int32 range or includes non-number value. Besides, please reset IIS and reboot the SQL server.

  • SQL Installation for SharePoint 2013 - Windows Firewall - Profile - domain, Public and Private - Which ones to choose?

    Hi there,
I am setting up SQL Server (to be used in our SharePoint 2013 farm).
The Firewall exception for SQL server gives me three choices in Profile section as
    Domain, Public and Private profiles
Which ones should I choose please?
    Thank you so much.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to set the firewall exception for SQL server.
Domain profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an Active Directory (AD) domain via an internal network. This is the profile that's typically active, because most servers are members of an AD domain.
Private profile—This profile is active when the server is a member of a workgroup. Microsoft recommends more restrictive firewall settings for this profile than for the domain profile.
Public profile—This profile is active when the server is connected to an AD domain via a public network. Microsoft recommends the most restrictive settings for this profile.

  • Fetching workflow status from Extended Properties in SharePoint 2013 sequential workflow (Farm solutions) option

    HI,
I am using VS 2012, I have selected the option "sharepoint sequential workflow (Farm solution) option and not the workflow App model.
Earlier in SharePoint 2010, the approver status column can be got from ExtendedProperties["TaskStatus"] and which contained either "#" or "@" as its value.
However, in SharePoint 2013, the ExtendedProperties does not contain the "TaskStatus" key. In the quickwatch, i was able to see the value as "#" associated to some guid key. In the debug mode,i can see the below:
    (new System.Collections.Hashtable.HashtableDebugView(TaskPropertiesForManagerAfter.ExtendedProperties)).Items[12]
But I’m not sure how to get to it from the code?
How to retrieve the Task Status using ExtendedProperties in SharePoint 2013?
    Thanks

Having problems getting SPD 2013 installed on my laptop because of a trial of O365, but I know in SPD 2010 you could find the BCC fields, etc... in the Advanced properties, it wasn't directly available via the common interface.  I know 2013 is very
different from 2010, and if I can get it to install correctly, I will update, but look for an advanced property, or an XML view where you can find the FROM: field.

  • SharePoint 2013 Provider-Hosted App Installs, throws File Exists error.

I have a SP2013 Provider-hosted app with DevExpress controls that was working fine until just recently. I am getting the following error when I try to F5 DEBUG:
"Error occurred in deployment step 'Install app for SharePoint': The file exists."
The app actually installs and executes but the debugger detaches very quickly plus it is prompting with the nagging aforementioned message. There are no AppUninstall / AppInstall / AppUpgraded events being handled.
    Thanks in advance.

I tried retraction, cleaning, reinstalling - nothing worked. I tried a new app in the site collection and a new app in a new site collection - still no luck. In the end the problem was more simple, but the "File exists" error was not helpful in determining
the root cause. Perhaps others will hit this thread and find the solution helpful. Visual Studio will typically switch automatically to "Run as Administrator" mode whenever debugging a SP App for 2013. In my case, it wasn't. I had one or two existing Apps
that never prompted me but ran fine and in this case, new apps weren't automatically running as the Administrator. After changing this behavior the app (and new apps) work as expected.

  • What needs to be done to rebuild a current Sharepoint 2010 Server farm to work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?

    Hello Community
Currently I have a Sharepoint 2010 Server farm.
One server contains the database and DNS server
because it is the the domain controller.
The other server Contains the Sharepoint 2010 Server software
and is the the application server where applications such as Metadata,
UPs, etc, reside (including web applications with sites built with the UI).
Now I am going to change to Sharepoint 2013 Server because currently
there is no newer version of Sharepoint available.
I am ready to rebuild the current Sharepoint 2010 farm configuration into
a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm from scratch.
The question  is what do needs to be added and\or changed to make the current
Sharepoint 2010 Server farm configuration work as a Sharepoint 2013 Server farm?
        Thank you
        Shabeaut

There is no direct in-place uprade method for SharePoint 2010 to 2013. You need to create a new SharePoint 2013 farm from scratch and attach service and content databases to upgrade them. Check out Upgrade
to SharePoint 2013 for more information about the process.
If you have another server, you would install SharePoint 2013 on this. If you don't, you'll need to remove SharePoint 2010 from your existing server and then install SharePoint 2013. Check out Hardware
and software requirements for SharePoint 2013 before starting to make sure your server meets the minimum requirements for SharePoint 2013:
Web server or application server in a three-tier farm
