Installation of snow leopard 10.6.8 fails on a mid-2010 Macbook Pro fails

Hi,
I have bought an official Snow Leopard 10.6.8 DVD at the Apple Store and triy now to boot a mid-2010 Macbook Pro with it in order to install it on this computer.
The hd of this Macbook has been refreshed and therefore cannot be boot.
The DVD boots, a grey Apple appears on the screen and then nothings else appends (no menu, no installation bar...). I have tried all methods given in the installation procedure...
I suspect an incompatibility (firmware, other...) and apparently the original version of MacOS was Snow Leopard 10.6.3 but I don't have it. And I nor can boot to upgrade tsome of these elements... Any Ideao to solve this ?

It is the original hard drive which should have been erased by the previous owner. The problem is, I cannot access it without any OS installed. Or maybe there is a bootable USB or DVD that can do it ?
Just an indication: when I boot without CD inserted in it, it shows a grey folder icon with a questionmark like this one:

The only observations are that the backup drive is deemed too small and the quite long list of diagnostic reports dated between Jan 18, 2015 (which I believe is the day I upgraded to Yosemite) & today the latest Yosemite update was installed on Jan 28, 2015

Once you get yourself back to Snow Leopard, if you still want to upgrade somewhat, I would suggest the following:
1. Get an external hard drive that you can use for experiments with new OS versions. You could partition it into 2 or 3 partitions. You could then clone your existing Snow Leopard system to one partition using Carbon Copy Cloner (well worth $40) or SuperDuper ($25).
2. Buy OS X Mountain Lion for $20, through the Apple online store (I don't think it's available through the App Store). Apple has decided to make it very difficult for anyone to get Mavericks unless they have already downloaded it.
You will receive two e-mails from Apple, one containing a PDF with a redemption code, and one with the password you will need to unlock the PDF. Using the code, you will download Mountain Lion from the App Store, where it will appear among your Purchased items.
After ML finishes downloading, its installer app will launch itself. When you see this launch screen, QUIT the install app immediately! Go to your applications folder, find the Install OS X Mountain Lion app, and copy it to a safe location outside of your Applications folder. Keeping one or more copies will allow you to reinstall without unnecessary aggravation if you later need or want to do that. At this point, you can re-launch the Installer in the Applications folder and let it run. You can install it on a clean partition on your external HD, or you can allow it to upgrade the Snow Leopard clone you created on your external drive, or you can do both. This should allow you to test how everything works for as long as you like.
3. If you left yourself a free partition on your test drive, try a clean install of Yosemite and set everything up from scratch (do not migrate anything). This will allow you to see whether your problems with it were related to something in your Snow Leopard system.

Mid 2010 Macbook Pro (7,1) - Downgrading from Mountain Lion (10.8.3) to Snow Leopard

Hi everyone!
I am looking for some help with downgrading my macbook pro from ML back down to SL. I'll start off with some information about my case:
I bought this computer mid 2010 - I believe in July, if that matters. It is a Macbook Pro 7,1 model. The computer came with two disks, one being the Snow Leopard 10.6.3 install dvd, and the other being the applications install dvd. I do still have these dvd's, sitting beside me as I type this. Just like many others, I upgraded my computer to Lion, and from there went to Mountain Lion. I have been on Mountain Lion for several months now, currently running 10.8.3. I know a lot of you out there are disappointed with this OS, and many have experienced significant adverse effects on the overall performance of their computer. That being said, I also know that a lot of you have not had these sorts of issues running the OS. As you can tell, I mysef fall into the first category, as I have not had the greatest experience with it. It just seems to tire out my computer at activity levels which, on Snow Leopard, would not be problematic. I say tire out here in that my computer will overheat, slow down, and even sometimes crash (the crashes primarily begin with the spinning rainbow wheel, attempts to quit / force quit the applications I am running, followed by complete and utter frozenness). When this happens, I have no choice but to press the power button until the computer shuts off, then I restart, occasioanlly taking multiple attempts because of kernel panics the first one or two times. Who knows why this happens...I upgraded my RAM a couple months ago from 4GB to 8GB, which has seemed to help some but not fix the problem entirely. So, I have been wanting to downgrade back to Snow Leopard.
Ok so, I have made multiple attempts at this. For starters, I can tell you that the computer simply will not boot from the Install DVD (it is the one which came with the computer, not a retail version or anything like that). Additionaly, I cannot restore the SL DMG file from the dvd, neither to my hard drive nor to a USB drive. Because of this, I ended up trying this: I downloaded the snow leopard installation files (I believe just the content of the DVD ripped from the disc) via a torrent. I then got a 16 GB USB flash drive, wiped and formatted it (Mac OS Extended (Journaled)), and copied to the USB drive the install file I downloaded. I'll also note that I have done the same thing for Mountain Lion, copying the install file from the app store to a separate 16 GB USB drive. Ok, onto the results of my attempts at downgrading:
Each time I have tried to downgrade, I have taken the following step:
1) Power down the computer
2) Insert Snow Leopard USB drive
3) Boot up the computer, holding the option/alt key
4) Selecting the Snow Leopard USB drive
     -It would successfully boot from the USB, and would bring me to the language selection window, as expected
5) After selecting English, the window gives me the option to continue with the install, or access any utilities, and I would go to Disk Utility
6) I selected the internal drive in Disk Utility (the whole drive, not the indented partition), and I went to the partition tab, partitioning the drive to have 1 partition, Mac OS Extended (Journaled), erasing the current partition
     **Note: I have not tried this, but I feel like maybe If I were to first Erase the drive, opting to zero out all data (1 pass) in the security options, then partition the drive the same way as I did in step 6, perhaps the installation would go smoothly without returning any errors...thoughts?
7) After step 6, I would return to the install os x window and begin installation of snow leopard.
     -Every time I have done this, the install has returned an error about mid-way through, and I would be prompted to restart and try installing again
8) Now having a non-booting computer, I would end up powering down, swapping out the snow leopard usb with my mountain lion usb, booting from that, partitioning the drive the same way as before, and reinstalling mountain lion
     -This beings me back to square 1. A working, booting computer on Mountain Lion...
I believe that my issues surrounding the use of my install dvd (that came with the computer) are caused by a bad optical drive. When in mountain lion, if I insert the dvd, it will read it, but it will do so very slowly. For example, after inserting the dvd and the install os x window coming up, if I select optional installs or instructions, each of these folders would open, but take a very long time to display their contents. It also is a struggle to get the disc to eject in this situation.
So, if anyone has had a similar situation and came out on top, I would truly appreciate your help!

How to revert mid 2010 macbook pro to snow leopard

I have a mid 2010 15" macbook pro which I want to sell. It is currently running Mavericks. It has a self-installed 1T disk upgrade.
I believe it came with Leopard but I can't seem to find those os/x disks. I do have the Snow Leopard disks which I purchased for an upgrade. I want to install Snow Leopard on this macbook pro after running disk utility to unpartitiion the drive and format for a new install. I know I've done this before but believe it was on older equipment which did not have an os/x which used a recovery partition.
When I boot from the cd and hold down the C key I get a shaded bar of progress and eventually the boot process stops with a gray screen containing an apple logo. It gets no further. What am I doing wrong or is there something in Mavericks which is preventing me from booting from the snow leopard disk? (Alternatively I have another macbook pro so maybe I can do what I want using target disk mode however I've not done this before.)

I pretty much feel like an idiot but in case someone else is as stupid as me.....
To get back to it's original state and remove Mavericks so I can sell it.......
I tried updating to 10.6 using update disks I had purchased not realizing these were for an older iMac I no longer had. It turned out that the 2010 macbook pro came with a newer version 10.6.8 already installed thus the disks which shipped with the mbp were newer. In it's infinite wisdom os/x would not downgrade itself!
Once I got the right disks (they were right in the box where I left them) I was able to boot from the cd, run disk utililty, unpartition the drive, format the drive, and install sl. Problem solved.
Banging head on desk. I'm now headed out to the woodshed to give myself a thrashing.

I installed Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit into my MacBook pro using Bootcamp, but I can't go back into the Mac OS Snow Leopard. Every time it starts up, it goes into Windows. Can someone please help me?

Snow leopard suddenly takes 5 minutes to boot up on macbook pro?

I have snow leopard on my new macbook pro and everything was fine until all of a sudden it took 5 minutes to log in and I couldn't connect to the internet which I know was working. It would also make me log in every time it booted up when I have it saved as automatic login. I then repaired disk permissions and internet access works yet it still takes 5 minutes to boot up. I was wondering if anyone could help me. Thanks.

I need to run some older software that only runs on Leopard (10.5), not Snow Leopard and above. Is there any way for me to install Leopard on a partition? I tried booting off of a Leopard DVD I found but the installer does not even start. It freezes after you select the DVD (held alt-option while booting).
Any help would be very much appreciated.

If your machine came with Snow leopard installed, it can't run Leopard except perhaps in a virtual machine via Parallels, VMWare Fusion, or VirtualBox. I can't explain how to do that, having no experience with doing it myself.
It definitely can't boot into Leopard.

Will upgrading from Snow Leopard "break" CS4 or Lightwave 10, etc. on my Macbook Pro?

I'm still relativlly unfamiliar with Macs and had a fairly simple question: If I upgrade from OSX 10.6.8 (MacBookPro5,2) to Mountain Lion, will any of my already installed programs (Adobe CS4 programs, Lightwave 10, Corel Painter 11, etc.) be affected or have issues with the newer OS? Should I be asking the individual software makers or perhaps a different Apple forum?

I cant open my iTunes and this is a whole new installation of snow leopard

Every time I open my iTunes app i get this message:
The folder "iTunes" is locked on a disk or you do not have write permissions for this folder...
What the **** does this mean?? this is a new installation of snow leopard and my only account is the system administrator so how the **** do I not have access?? Please help urgently!

Each time you connect your iPhone to iTunes, you need to eject it before closing iTunes by clicking on the little "eject" icon shown in iTunes. It seems that sometime in the past, you did not do that.
I'm not sure how to undo the previously done damage, but maybe a reboot of your Mac would help.

Optional Installs for Snow Leopard

After completing the installation of Snow Leopard, I noticed the "Optional Installs" folder on the disc and opened the Optional Install.mpkg. Under applications it lists Address Book, Mail, iTunes, iChat, etc. Does this mean they were not installed and I'm still using the Leopard versions, or were any new updates installed and they are there in case you need to reinstall? I just want to make sure I'm running the "latest & greatest" of everything. So the question is whether I need to do anything with these or if as long as I went through the normal update process I'm all good. Thank you.

no. it means that you could have chosen not to install them during the SL installation by pressing the "custom" button on one of the installer screens. but all those apps are installed by default if you didn't customize your installation. you don't have to do anything.

Can't install a stable Windows 7 on my Snow Leopard mid-2009 Macbook Pro via Botcamp

I just erased the whole disk with Disk Utility and re-installed a fresh version of Snow Leopard on my mid-2009 MacBook Pro with my original install disk and updated all the software.
I then created a 400GB partition via Bootcamp Assistant for Windows and successfully installed Vista.
I then successfully installed Windows 7 (not an upgrade) over Vista (I only have the official upgrade disk) and installed Bootcamp in Windows with the original OS X DVD.
I then upgraded Bootcamp from version 3.0 to 3.1 to 3.2 to 3.3 and then to 4.0.
None of these versions have resulted in a stable version of Windows 7 because the screen randomly turns one color (usually blue or white) with no cursor or interaction possible and I have to shut the computer down by holding the power button.
I've tried the whole process with 32 bit and 64 bit versions with the same results. The funny thing (not so funny, really) is that WIndows becomes increasingly unstable the higher I go with Bootcamp. I've even tried running the Vista to Windows 7 upgrade utility but Windows 7 is totally unusable. Once at Bootcamp 4 the system can't even get past the windows boot process.
I'm pulling my hair out here because I can't think of anything else to try. I'm suspecting the problem is driver related.

I suggest you start over with the install of Windows. You can use an Upgrade version of Win 7 to do a Clean install.
Basically you have to Not put in the license key when asked and also uncheck the option to Auto Activate Windows when the system gets online, mThen once it is installed and you are at the desktop go to the System applet in Control panel and Select Activate Windows. Then put the license key in.
If for some reason that doesn't work then you do a second install of Windows7 over the top of the current install and that make the installer think you are Upgrading and the Activation will go through.

How can I install snow leopard on 2010 MacBook Pro that has no os?

I purchased a 2010 MacBook Pro on eBay and it was delivered with no operating system. It has disk utility recovery, but the choices listed don't apply. I don't have an time machine backup, nor can I restore Mavericks. I bought a copy of Snow Leopard to install, but can't figure out how to do it. Hoping someone out there has some suggestions.

The version on the "Full Retail" 10.6.3 DVD is likely to be build 10D575, which is too early to Install and run on that MacBook, which shipped with one of the custom versions listed in the box above.

I was told I can update to Snow Leopard without adding RAM but just read on another discussion thread that someone with the same age Macbook Pro that I have was told to purchase more RAM then update to SL.
