Installation of solaris 10 on 2 similar sparcs
Hi.
I have 2 t5120 sun enterprise systems. One is complete installed and RAID -1 was configured using hardware raid- raidctl on both systems.
I wanted to know if there is an easy way I can just take out the second disk (disk in right side slot when I am in front of front panel) from installed and running machine and insert into another t5120 in left slot ( I assume that it is going to be primary) and I will get a running OS on second machine without having to install OS again.
Is this doable ?I may be missing some steps , if so please correct me because last time I tried I got following errors :
Quote:
ERROR: boot-read fail
Boot device: net File and args:

any ideas or is this not possible at all

OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Communication
Conexant
HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Network
Intel Corporation
*82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
No Solaris Driver
No Solaris Driver
Multimedia
Intel Corporation
HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
Thanks.

How similar is x86 compared to Solaris 8 or 9 on SPARC?
How similar is x86 compared to Solaris 8 or 9 on SPARC?
Thanks.Extremely similar. The vast majority of Solaris is built from the same source code for both platforms. You will find all of the same commands in places like /usr/bin and /usr/dt/bin.
Of course, the instruction sets are different. While all of the same commands may exist in those places and they implement the exact same functions with the exact same options, the binary files are different. You can't run x86 binaries on SPARC or vice versa.
While the Solaris binaries provide the exact same functionality, the same is not necessarily true with other packages that can be added. Sun's Java Enterprise System is supposed to eventually have all the same programs for SPARC and x86, and that is almost true already. StarOffice is only available for now for SPARC, but OpenOffice is available for both. Third party software may exist only for one or the other, but this is improving fast. A huge amount of Solaris x86 software can be installed from blastwave.org and other sites.
If you are a developer, there is a good chance that your code for SPARC will work on x86 with just a recompile. The system call APIs are identical. If it does not work with just a recompile, it is because you have a bug in your code or you used non-portable constructs like assuming a particular byte order (SPARC is big endian, x86 is little endian).
Solaris and most SPARC hardware both come from Sun, so of course Solaris supports all the hardware you are likely to find shipped with a SPARC machine. You can buy x86 machines from Sun, but you are likely to look elsewhere. Since Sun does not control what is in the machine, Solaris may not support all the hardware. Again, this situation is getting better. Still, you should consult Sun's Hardware Compatibility List. Note that Sun isn't good about saying this, but Solaris 9 supports all of the hardware in the Solaris 9 list and all of the hardware in the Solaris 8 list. You must look in both places to see what Solaris 9 supports.

Need Agent Installer for Solaris (SPARC)
Hi All,
I have downloaded Grid Control Agent Installer for Solaris from http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/products/oem/htdocs/agentsoft.html.
When I tried to extract the zip file, I am getting the following error message.
"Can not open file. It does not appear to be a valid archive. If you downloaded this file, try downloading the file again."
Even I tried using http://sac.us.oracle.com/download/index.html also but getting the same error.
Please send me the location if you have,
Thanks
SumathiMost commands are identical. Performance analysis, loading all are similar. Tape interaction, creation of tape devices is going to be pretty much the same.
The differences show up a lot at the hardware level. HBAs aren't usually the same, many drivers (and their quirks) are different between the architectures. If you're debugging connectivity to a tape library, those differences may be critical.
So you can't get as close as you may want, but I'll bet it would still be helpful.

Installation error Solaris 10-u6-ga1
I must be missing something really obvious on the installation of Solaris 10 U6. I've come up against the error message upon manually partitioning, and using UFS. After the install the error is:
Solaris 10 10 software installation partially failed
Solaris 10 packages partially installed
SUNWlur
Then at reboot it loops and loops
If I install using ZFS no problem. Unfortunately I have to use UFS for this install.
I pulled down the sol-10-u6-x86-ga1 dvd and installed on an Vmware to see what I'd get. If I manually setup the drive, it fails to with the same error.
Here is my drive layout both sparc server and vmware(x86)
/ = 10 Gb
swap = 10 Gb
/etc = 10 Gb
/usr = 10 Gb
/var = 10 Gb
/export=remaining drive space.
I'm I missing something obvious?
thanks
billThere should be more information in the install log about why the one package failed. If you search for the package name in the log you should be able find it. Then that might help determine whether the package can be installed on its own, possibly fixing your reboot issue.

11gR2 installation on Solaris failed with prereuisite 124861-15
The 11gR2 installation on Solaris 10 sparc failed with prereuisite 124861-15.
When I tried to install the patch 124861-20, it failed with the following(see below):
I have Sun Studio 12-2 installed on the system.
It was complaining that some packages (SPROmrcom, SPROlangx, SPROlang,SPROsunms ) are not installed.
Where can I get these packages? Should not it be included in the Sun Studio 12-2 installation?
Thanks.

Wu-ftpd installable for solaris 10 and solaris 9
Hi,
I could see only "proftpd" is available http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/freeware
But I am looking for the "wu-ftpd" server which is compatable with Solaris 9 and Solaris 10.
Any one help me from where I can get the "wu-ftpd" installable for solaris 9 and solaris 10 sparc server.
thanks,
AmudhaHi Robert,
Thanks for your reply.
I too saw that the ftp version used in solaris 10 by default is wu-ftpd, but I am not sure about it, because when I tried to ftp to my solaris box the version it is started is not "FTP server (Version wu-2.6.2(5)".
I have got the wu-ftpd installable. But I could not get the proper document for configuring the same.
Question1: How to stop existing ftp service and start newly instlaled wu-ftpd in Solaris 9 and Solaris 10 servers?
Earlier solaris 8 version I change the ftpd version in /etc/inetd.conf file and give HUP signal to inetd then this new wu-ftpd version will be used.
Question 2: It always starts the system inbuilt ftp server and also I am getting ftp log in failure for any user which I add newly or even existing users.
could any one help to resolve these issues? Thanks in advance for your help.

2) How to SMI Label/Format a disk while OS Installation in Solaris 11.1?
As we know that ZFS is the default filesystem in Solaris 11.
We have seen in the Oracle documentation that for rpool below are recommended:
- A disk that is intended for a ZFS root pool must be created with an SMI label, not an EFI label.
- Create root pools with slices by using the s* identifier.
- ZFS applies an EFI label when you create a storage pool with whole disks.
- In general, you should create a disk slice with the bulk of disk space in slice 0.
I have seen the solution that using format -e, we change the labelling but all the data will be lost, whats the way to apply a SMI Label/Format on a rpool disks while OS Installation itself.
Please provide me the steps to SMI Label a disk while installaing Solaris 11.1 OS.Oracle recommends below things on rpool: (thats reason wanted to apply SMI Label)

How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10
Hi Java Specialist,
I am trying to setup a network interface with the following steps on a new fresh Solaris 10 installation using the instruction titled How to Add a Physical Interface After Installation in Solaris 10 3/05 ONLY from http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E19253-01/816-4554/esxhb/index.html:
1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb up
2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment prior to installing Solaris
10 on top of it.
3. # Added saturn to /etc/hostname.lo0.
4. # Added 10.56.8.101 to /etc/inet/hosts
5. # Added 10.56.0.0 255.255.240.0 to /etc/inet/netmasks
6.# reboot
However, the following errors kept recurring:
svcs –xv …. unable to qualify my own domain name,
failed with exit status 69.
Any idea on what other steps have I missed? I was hoping to only do step 3 – 6 for the change to apply permanently.
Many thanks,
JackHi Java Specialist,... in a Solaris forum?
1. # ifconfig lo0 plumb upThe loopback connection (your lo0)is NOT a physical interface. There are no hardware components for it. Nor can I think of any reason why it should ever be anything other than the default 127.0.0.1
Use your favorite Internet search site (such as Google, Bing, Yahoo) to learn more about it.
2. # ifconfig lo0 10.56.8.101 netmask 255.255.240.0. This was the working Windows DHCP environment ...I have no idea how a nonexistent software construct gets a DHCP address in a MS Operating System, unless you are confusing this with the "Microsoft Loopback Adapter" which is an utterly different concept. Again, go see what Google tells you.
<br>
<br>
<br>
... completely unrelated to configuring an IP...
unable to qualify my own domain nameAgain, search the Internet or even search these forums with that string of words.
Go back through your two most recent posts and read the responses again.
They seem to both be on the same topic as this new one -- configuring an IP on something.
How to initialize new IP address on secondary interface permanently
How to change IP address permanently on Solaris 10
When you've done all that, then come back and tell us what you are actually trying to do. -

@Markus: Thanks I agree with you, but I have doubt in this area. Isn't it like project.max-shm-memory was new parameter we need to set in local zone rather using shmsys:shminfo_shmmax in /etc/system. Do we need to still maintain this parameter in /etc/system in global zone.
As per SUN doc below parameter was obsolete from Solaris 10.
