Installation of Solaris 10 on x86 machine

I am going to install Solaris10 5/08 on an x86 machine. After I bootup the dvd, it shows:
GNU GRUB version 0.95 ( xxK lower / xxK upper memory)
grub>
It doesn't show the selection item reference to the following document.
http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/howtoguides/installationhowto.jsp
What command should I type here to process the installation?
Thanks

What command should I type here to process the installation?Nothing. If you get a grub> prompt, then something has already failed. After grub loads, it will look for the default boot menu. Since that's not show, it is having problems reading the media. It could be an incompatibility with your hardware, or it could be a bad disk or burn.

    Hi Hal, :)
    # /opt/SUNWsymon/sbin/es-start -a
Could not start Agent.I've seen this before too. "svcadm enable/disable sunmcagent" didn't fix things. But for some reason if I started the agent interactively (es-start -ai) it worked... and I let the Agent load a few modules and verified it worked in the Console. Then once I quit out of interactive mode (thereby stopping the Agent) svcadm enable/disable and es-start/stop worked correctly again.
I had that happen to me 2-3 times now, and every time mucking about in interactive mode a bit fixed it. It must reset something in svcs.

  • Installation of solaris 10 on x86 intel dual core or core 2 duo

    hi all,
while i am installing solaris 10 on x86 machine which has 250 GB hard disk and 4 GB RAM with intel dual core processor
the first steps are going cool i.e. in the first cd it asks about partitions and it is accepting the partitions and also the partitions sizes what i am giving are:
    / -- 30 GB, /etc -- 6GB, /home -- 6GB, /usr -- 6GB, /export/home -- 100GB, /var -- 9GB, swap-- 10GB
and after the first CD got installed it asks for restart the system and when it
boots then i am getting the booting option and i selected it as solaris and one more thing to tell is it has already Windows XP pro+sp2
after selecting it boots with solaris and
    after few seconds it restarts
please tell me if any body knows that is there any compatability issue with the processor that solaris is not going to support for intel core 2 duo or dual core processors
    looking for the good reply

OK, so what are the options if we run the HCL check and come up with some incompatibilities??
I have Solaris 11/06 (from DVD media) installed on a brand new Dell Inspiron 530 (dual boot with XP). After the grub menu appears, and selecting 'Solaris', it takes about 3 minutes to get to a command line. I get a few errors at that time, such as:
file in / differ from the boot archive: /etc/path_to_inst
cannot find /etc/devices/mdi_ib_cache: no such file
I tried running 'svcadm clear system/boot-archive' and it seems to attempt to boot into a graphical CDE, but I just end up with an unintelligible multi-colored display, and need to power off.
I've checked the HCL and found some incompatibilities, but I don't know how to work-around these?
Running the Hardware compatibility test came up with the following:
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Communication
    Conexant
    HSF 56k Data/Fax Modem
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Network
    Intel Corporation
    *82562V-2 10/100 Network Connection*
    No Solaris Driver
    No Solaris Driver
    Multimedia
    Intel Corporation
    HD Audio Controller
Can I simply disable the Modem and the HD audio in windows XP device manager, then reboot to Solaris, to get around these two (I tried this already)??
For the network card driver incompatibility, there is a Sun doc that says the workaround is to run: update_drv -a -i '"pci8086,1064"' iprb, but when I run this command at the initial Solaris command line, or try to edit any file for that matter, I get the error "read-only file system" Seems I have my hands tied in maintenance mode.
    Thanks.

  • Remote Installation of Solaris 10 on Sparc machine..

    Hello all..
I have a Sun V240 box that has Solaris 8 currently installed on it. I need to wipe out the whole box and do a Fresh install of Solaris 10.
Problem is, that box is in the server room, and is not connected to any monitor, nor do it have any graphic card.I have only SSH access to the box from my Windows Desktop to do regular Admin operations.
How do i install Solaris 10( i got Solaris 10 on a DVD disk) on that box, that has no monitor and no graphic card. ?
Also, i do have a Sun V100 Desktop machine at my desk, that i use sometimes to connect to this Solaris Server.
    any help is appreciated.
    thanks

You could use 'live upgrade' to upgrade the system while it's still running, but you'd need extra disk space for that.
Or you could attach via the serial console and communicate with it that way to run the install.

  • About Installation of Solaris 9 OE x86...

    Dear Experts,
I am a newbie on Solaris. When I use the suninstall to install the Solaris on my system, it occurs an error of my VGA. I am using the GeForce 4. How can I install the Solaris correctly?
    Thanks.

Did you select the Black&White VGA video driver? The second part of the Solaris installation (the java
webstart installer) is incompatible with B&W graphics and needs at least 8-bit pseudocolor graphics.
Try the VESA driver. It should support 8-bit graphics on almost every video adapter.
If it does not work with the VESA driver, then try installing from the "Software 1 of 2" CD, and choose
"bypass" on the screen where you select the video card / keyboard and mouse configuration.
The Solaris installation will continue in text mode.
Once solaris is installed, add the XFree86 video driver porting kit, and configure the video card using the
    "kdmconfig" command.

If by "advantages of installation of oracle 10g rac on open solaris on x86 machine" you mean advantages over RAC on Linux or AIX or HP/UX there aren't any.
If you want to know the advantages of RAC over stand-alone they generally relate to:

    2. Transparent fail-over
    2. Incremental horizontal scalability

  • Installation of Solaris 86

    Hi,
I have an old dual boot windoze 98 /mandriva Linux machine, which I want to totally convert to solaris.
I down loaded solaris 10, but my machine is 1998, so only supporting installation from floppy, and there is no floppy for solaris 10 - you can only install from CD :-(
Okay, so I have a solaris 8 CD for x86, and I use that - it has a floppy ;-)
I run through the install, and note that it only uses the disk from mandriva: it doesn't try and use the windoze partition.
I get to the end, and it reboot, and of cause it reboots back to windoze (the lilo that I used to have for mandriva/windows has been trashed).
I then look at the bios, and try to get it to boot form the 2nd disk where the solaris it, and fail, I reinstal the original bios settings, and it now long longer boot from windoze (I neither want/care about windoze/mandriva being wiped).
I put the floppy for the soalris8 back in, and it can see the solaris installation.
    So
    1. How so I completely wipe all of my disks before I try and install solaris 8 so that it actually is on the 1st disk and boots correctly:
    2. Is there any way to install solaris 10 on a machine that requires a flopy to install?
Any thoughts would be most welcomed..
    best regards

I run through the install, and note that it only uses
the disk from mandriva: it doesn't try and use the
windoze partition. If it can see all the disks (one of them isn't on a strange controller or anything, is it), then you can select existing partitions and destroy them. I don't have the Solaris 8 installer, but watch the bottom line of the installer. At some points, you may have to hit F4 to enter some extra screens. That may be necessary to remove existing partitions.
If the entire disk is never seen at all, then there may be some sort of device conflict or driver limitation.

  • Solaris 8 on x86: been there, am back

Just a quick opinion on my Solaris experience: it's as evil as Win2K when it comes to partitioning, except it's even harder (in my case not possible) to get lilo to boot Solaris, even on a primary partition... it's not quicker than Linux or FreeBSD, as user-hostile as *BSD, the install feels clunky and awkward...
CDE is awful, even XFCE beats it by miles, I'm glad GNOME is there but not for x86 alas??
ash could really be replaced by bash or anything with command line completion for instance, etc etc.
I won't blame them for lack of hardware support, but as it is I was without network under Solaris (USB ADSL), so really there wasn't much to keep me using it. Except it's messed up my partitions badly enough that I had to reinstall Linux and FreeBSD...
I am sure quite a few of you disagree with that, but I haven't seen any reason to stick to Solaris on my x86. Dissenting opinions please feel free to do so, I am disappointed but curious nevertheless...

    Hello,
Actually, I have had a miserable experience attempting to install Solaris 8 on "ANY" INTEL hardware I have. At least, you were able to get it to install. It's a shame though, Sun and others complain about how Microsoft is trying to monopolize, but as much as I do agree for the most part, I have to give it to MS. Their OS' 95/98/W2K/NT, they all work on "ANY" hardware it seems as long as you can get the drivers from the manufacturer -- from the oldest to the newest machines.
For Sun to enjoy a better share of the market, it needs to spend more time ensuring its OS works(even if it's not supported) on most INTEL H/W. This will ensure people, like myself(consultants) who are looking at new possibilities for Unix can seriously consider the product by evaluating it on simple machines and once proven can actually consider the product as part of a recommendation to customers. What this has reaffirmed, is that, the big 3 Unix houses -- HP, SUN, and IBM have a great product on Mid-to-Mainframes but are still sleeping while MS makes a BIG whole in their pocket with software that works on ANY! platform or H/W. The reality is that I would be hard pressed to recommend Linux for any "Prime Time" production(don't get me wrong, Linux is just fine and I use it and will continue to use it, but it's not ready for prime time) application and although I do not believe MS NT or 2K has the maturity of Unix, it certainly stands out in terms of viability. If this is another way to sell more proprietary boxes, I'll just say -- remember what happened to apple? Great product with a very smaaall market share...
As you can tell, I am deeply dissapointed because SUN make awsome workstations and servers and can easly translate that success to the INTEL platform by having their software run on more H/W(even if it's not supported). This would definitely go a long way, in my opinion, to gain the market share they seem to be wanting to acquire since they did take MS to court.
    Very Dissapointed,
    Frank

  • Installation error Solaris 10-u6-ga1

I must be missing something really obvious on the installation of Solaris 10 U6. I've come up against the error message upon manually partitioning, and using UFS. After the install the error is:
Solaris 10 10 software installation partially failed
    Solaris 10 packages partially installed
    SUNWlur
Then at reboot it loops and loops
If I install using ZFS no problem. Unfortunately I have to use UFS for this install.
I pulled down the sol-10-u6-x86-ga1 dvd and installed on an Vmware to see what I'd get. If I manually setup the drive, it fails to with the same error.
Here is my drive layout both sparc server and vmware(x86)
    / = 10 Gb
    swap = 10 Gb
    /etc = 10 Gb
    /usr = 10 Gb
    /var = 10 Gb
    /export=remaining drive space.
    I'm I missing something obvious?
    thanks

There should be more information in the install log about why the one package failed. If you search for the package name in the log you should be able find it. Then that might help determine whether the package can be installed on its own, possibly fixing your reboot issue.

  • Reconfigure reboot for Solaris 10 u5 x86 guest in VirtualBox

    Hello,
I just installed the new kernal patch into a Solaris 10 u5 x86 32-bit guest OS in VirtualBox 2.0.4 on a WinXP 32-bit host. I need to do a reconfigure reboot. I can't seem to get to the ok prompt from which to use boot -r. init 0 does not work, it only offers a "push any key to reboot."
What is the optimal way to initiate a reconfigure reboot for Solaris 10 in my setup?
I tried the grub-based technique in which, upon reboot, I get the grub menu and push "e." That gets me to another grub screen with 3 entries. I selected the kernal entry, pushed "c" to add "-r" to the end of the line, and then "b" to reboot. Is that the best way to reconfigure reboot for Sol 10 x86.
The above method did configure devices on reboot, but I'm not sure that is the best way to boot -r
    Thank you in advance...

x86 machines (including virtual machines) do not have an OBP or an 'ok' prompt.
You have to manipulate the GRUB either through interactive commands like you've shown, or by editing the menu.lst file to change boot parameters.
Of course for reconfiguration, you also have the option of touching '/reconfigure' and doing a normal reboot.
