Installation of Tiger on a PowerBook G4 17in - failing

As the subject would suggest, I'm having troubles installing Tiger.
My PowerBook went in to have its hard drive fixed as it had started developing errors. So, with a new hard drive installed (not by me, an Apple repair place) I have been trying to install Tiger.
(This is the purchased version of Tiger, not the laptop's original discs which I can't find).
On installation I've been choosing Erase and Install. It does the "checking your installation DVD" without a problem, then goes onto "Preparing for installation", "Preparing the Disk", then "Preparing Mac OS X" all without a hitch.
(Incidentally, I've been choosing to just install the Base system - not the printer drivers, X11 and extra fonts.)
"Base System Part 1" all goes through fine, but when it gets to "Essentials" it gets to about 60% done when writing files, then it stops and says "There were errors installing the software" - "Please try installing again".
Installing again doesn't help - I've tried countless times. The hard drive verifies fine as does the Tiger installation DVD.
I've been able to use the same Tiger disc to install using my Mac Mini so I know the disc is fine. That leads me to think that there's a problem with the drive in the PowerBook as it won't install OS X onto either the laptop hard drive or an iPod when connected.
Before I take the machine into the repair shop - is this a known issue that anyone may have heard of?
Sorry for the long post! I've tried to make it as detailed as possible!
Andy
PowerMac G4 733   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi Allan,
Thanks for your reply. In answer to your questions, yes - it's a proper version of Tiger (bought from Apple the moment it was released).
As far as I'm aware, the repair facility did not install Tiger on there (my friend picked up the machine and tried installing it before I had a chance to look at it).
SMART status on the laptop's hard drive is not supported, apparently. (That's from booting the machine up from the iPod to check)
I've been trying HFS+ with Journaliing each time.
Cheers,
Andy

  • QT 7.2 installer for Tiger ?

Anyone know where I can get the QT 7.2 installer for Tiger (PPC Mac)?
I've searched all over Apple's download site and the only versions I can find there are 7.4 and 7.4.1
Thanks in advance for any help you can give.

    Thanks. That's a great link.
In the meantime, I found the specific download in a thread in the Final Cut Express forum.

  • Classic option does not work in new installation of Tiger

This problem is in a new installation of Tiger 10.4.6 on a G4 Cube. First I ought to say I am really happy with the Tiger OS. It runs really well on my Cube. The problem is - the Classic option in the System Preference folder will not open. It starts up like it will, tells me I should update the Quicken version to 6.3, and when it has finished opening it flashes a Classic icon in the dock, which just as quickly disappears. I have tried to open it by opening an application that needs it to run, and I have tried to open it with extensions off, with the same result.
I can reboot to OS 9.2.2 and I have done that several times with no problem. I just wonder why the Classic option in Tiger is not working? Could it be a memory problem: not enough? I have 384MB

    Malcolm,
Thanks for the reply. Yes, I read that there might be a possible extension problem in Classic, and I did try it with the extensions off as you suggested. It still will not start up. I will try again later from a "clean" start, and if all else fails I will call apple support, but I hate to do that as it's a bit like never, never land.

  • Installation of Preferences Pane on remote Server OSX fails

On an OSXServer mini which I connect to with RDC, I am unable to install any Preference Pane programs such as Slink or Squeeze.
    I have full admin access to that machine, it's a dedicated database server, nothing exotic running on it, latest OS10.6.4, but I get the message;
"You can't open the xxx Preferences Pane because it is not available to you at this time. To see this preference pane, you may need to connect a device to your computer."
There is no mouse or screen connected to this mini, RDC access only.
The PrefPane icons become visible but remain greyed out.
Remote Management is activated in the ServerAdmin.
A very similar configuration hosted elsewhere gives no problem. Same settings, same RDC access, same OS.
At this point I'm at a loss. Clues anyone?
    TIA,
    Peter

The problem isn't the filesystem per se. It's bad software quality if pathnames defined wrong or multiple times with different notation. Often there is only one or two letters with the wrong upper or lower case. I guess in the current Flash installer this is the case. With the previous versions I had no problems.

My Mini isn't case sensitive, so I can't really say but I had two iMacs when I worked at Intuit that were case sensitive and they had all kinds of software installation issues. One of the Mac developers at Mountain View told me that Case Sesnitive shouldn't be chosen as a format except when a system is isolated and used as a testing server. For a workstation or home computer, it's a terrible choice for a setup.

The installation  of flash player 11.9 aborts with an unspecified error. I running OSX 10.9 with an case-sensitive filesystem. Can anyone confirm there are problems with the installer on case-sensitive filesystems?

  • Tiger install on powerbook fails

The system is a PowerBook G4 Titanium (1 GHz, 1GB ram) that was dropped edge-first onto a hardwood floor, tragically destroying the LCD. However, the machine continues to work fine connected directly to a Planar PL2010M monitor using the DVI output. The OS is at version 10.3.9 (7W98), with all installed software updated as of 8-December-2005.
I am using this machine as a music server, and want to upgrade to Tiger to be able to use the BBC Radio and Classic FM widgets (among others). With the system started under 10.3.9, the Tiger installation DVD loads correctly, but during the boot from the DVD I get something disturbingly similar to a Windows Blue Screen Of Death. The DVD continues to make various busy sounds, but I have no mouse pointer, no title bar and no dock. And, of course, no dialog boxes. The system seems to respond to keyboard inputs, but since the display isn't displaying anything, I have no idea what is going on. The only recourse is to power-off, then eject the DVD upon restarting. Fortunately, the installer doesn't do anything to ruin the existing 10.3.9 OS. I have tried various monitor resolutions, with monitor mirroring both on and off, to no avail.
    Any ideas ???
    PowerBook G4 Titanium   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

It's certainly a possibility, but I don't think this issue is being caused by the Superdrive, as I can load the install DVD, open and view the read.me's, etc., and launch the upgrade executable. I am also able to use it to play video DVD's, and can still use Toast to create CD's that are readable on other machines. All of the other installed software still works properly as well. I guess I'm trying to determine if there is something in the upgrade process that disables video output thru the DVI connector during the installation and forces it to use the on-board video, whether on a notebook, or an eMac or an iMac.

  • Install Tiger on G3 Powerbook.

I work for Sprint and want to install an aircard on my customer's G3 Powerbook. The Aircard requires 10.4 (we're at 10.3.9 now).
I have my old Tiger disks; the four set CD type. When I run Disk 1, it starts as normal, asks me to restart, but logs in to OSX as normal (without continuing installation).
This is for an old lady; buying another version of this update is not an option. If that's the only way, we'll give up. But I don't see why my old Tiger CD's wouldn't work.
Any help will be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks, mac people!!!

    Hi Vincent_L!
'I have my old Tiger disks; the four set CD type."
As the Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, is on a DVD, they may be Model Specific, unless you used the Tiger Media Exchange Program to exchange for CDs, or purchased a set LIKE THIS.
If the discs were shipped as a pre-installed system, on another model of Mac, they are model specific, and probably won't work.

  • Panther or Tiger for a PowerBook G4?

I am installing a new HD in my "old" PowerBook-G4 and I am considering running it with Panther instead of Tiger. This is because while recently using Tiger and running CPU intensive activities (videos or in Safari), the computer would get very hot, the fans would run at high speed and ultimately the computer would go to sleep. I assume that Tiger demands more power from the CPU than Panther and that the PB should run cooler with Panther (is this correct or am I dead wrong?). Or is it possible that my failing HD was making my PB get hot? If this is a possibility, I would go to Tiger...
I only use this PB top check my email, surf through the internet, so Panther should suffice.
    Any thoughts?

The computer did not go to sleep because low battery... and I do not use animated emoticons either. The computer also went to sleep when watching videos in VLC or when downloading large files. I suspect that when Tiger was developed it was focused mostly towards more powerful Macs (G5). I probably could fix this one by getting more memory or having it go to a shop, but I do not want to invest more $$ in this oldie. I just got a new drive, which I installed myself and that will be it for a backup, kitchen unit... Panther is working beautifully, the only things I miss from Tiger:
    1) Ability to load all my bookmarks (from a file) to Safari or Firefox (I have to do this one by one, manually). Maybe I just forgot how to do this...
2)Version of Quicksilver for Panther is a little more primitive than the one I was using for Tiger. Quicksilver is great for searching and opening files at once, so I do not miss spotlight (I agree that Finder search in Panther is better). I also will not miss Dashboard and Widgets (they usually just got in the way and consumed CPU power.

  • Streamlining language installation of Tiger

    Hi,
I am getting ready to upgrade to Tiger and would like to know if there is a way to bypass the non-english language portion of the installation. When I installed Panther it seems a lot of the install time was related to language installation. I'm not a xenophobe...I was just looking to streamline the installation.
    Thanks,
    Rick

    Hello Rick,
I do not know of any way to stop the languages being installed - I am sure there is a way. One neat little Application that will remove the languages is here...
    Monolingual
    Also...
Deleting all the unused printer drivers can release a considerable amount of space. I managed to " regain " around 2Gigs this way.
    Hope that helps some
    Regards
    Ian

  • Re-installed tiger, now my Powerbook and the AirExp don't work

Have a 15" powerbook. Put a new internal drive in it. So, I did a fresh install of Tiger 10.4.4. Since I forgot my AirportExpress password, when I went to turn Airport on, and it asked for it, I did a reset button thing on the AE. So, here I am now. I can surf the web fine, get email, but I can't see the other devices on my wired network.
I have a cable modem, and a router, and the AirportExpress thing is connected into all that. I used to be able to do anything any wired mac could do, print, file share with the other macs I have. Now, I can't. I have looked at all the Network and Sharing settings, seem fine. I also have a Lacie EthernetMini NAS drive on the network. That does not show up either, but if I punch the IP in directly, it does see it. I also can't find the printer that's on the network.
So, it's connected, but not really.
Am I overlooking something obvious here?

By "doing the reset button thing" you likely restored the Airport Express to its default settings - which includes enabling its built in router. When that happens, you lose access to network resources on your home LAN that that Airport Express is also connected to.
To fix this problem - run the Airport Admin Utility. Select your Airport Express, click to Configure. Click on the Network tab. Uncheck the setting to "Distribute IP addresses". Update settings to the Airport Express. Finally, restart all wireless computers. That should solve your problem.

  • Set up Tiger on my Powerbook G4, now having problems with printer

I just bought and installed Tiger 10.4 on my Powerbook G4 and now my printer will not print it says stopped with an ! over the icon, and I can't figure out what is wrong. If someone could please help me. If important I have a canon MP460 and I use it wirelessly with Airport Extreme base station.

Launch Printer Setup Utility. Try deleting the printer and then adding it back in.

  • First time installation of tiger

    GREETINGS!
i am on 10.2.8 on a gigabit ethernet 450do. it has never had the disk erased since i got it new, with os9.
i just got a 10.4.6 install replacement dvd from applecare.
when i finally get a clone made of my computer, should i erase the disk and install, being it is eight years old? i'm wondering if that wil give me any added performance, stability - or?
otherwise should/can i do an archive and install from 10.2.8 to 10.4.6?
last - and i know there is a lot of controversy over this - should i install the os on its own partition, and if so, how big should it be?
same for the external hd - it is brand new [today!] with nothing on it yet; should i partition that, and/or put the os on its own partition?
thanks very much - and happy thanksgiving!
    chris in ny

Were I you I would make your clone then test the clone to be sure it will boot the computer. Then boot from the Tiger DVD and do an Erase and Install which will completely wipe the drive before installing Tiger.
Obviously you could partition the drive if you want but there is no compelling reason to do so.
If I were you I would also reformat the external drive before you clone to it and reformat the main drive as well:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. There is no SMART info for an external drive. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.

  • Installation from Tiger OS 10.4. back to Panther 10.3

I installed Tiger OS 10.4 from Panther 10.3 on my Desktop G4 Gigabit Ethernet 450 Dual because I liked to have it also on my Laptop G4 1 GB. Now I installed Panther OS 10.3 again but Wireless Internet doesn't work anymore. Why does it work with Tiger OS 10.4 but not with OS 10.3? I tried everything to get it work again but failled.
    Thanks for any help
    Adelbert

If there had been a related firmware update for the wireless system,
such a change could affect how an older OS X version sees it; if
that system was no longer able to administer the wireless network.
{And it may be, you could have to attempt to re-administer the wi-fi
    base by Ethernet cable, in order to re-set it to work with 10.3.9.}
With a re-install of an older and more obsolete operating system,
there can be issues. Between the computing hardware, wireless
base station, and any other changes in the configuration due to an
upgrade to begin with, some of them may be harder to reverse if
they relate to a change in Firmware.
Presuming you have double checked all possible settings and have
an all new system 10.3.9 installed with no incorrect parts from 10.4
in there; & the Panther 10.3.9 also has been updated far as possible.
(There were updates in even the last few security updates, java update
+ other parts outside of the Combo 10.3.9 file, that could relate to wi-fi.)
Been a few years since I last dealt with Panther 10.3.9 and some wi-fi
and other issues; some troublesome issues related to a security update
file which had more than two possible remedies, short of a new full install.
Is the Panther install on a separate partition and if so, does the Tiger OS
still work correctly when running the computer from there? Or is the 10.3
installation a totally new from scratch install on a secure erased HDD?
The problem with asking a question, is that sometimes one invites more.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • My MBP read DVD/CD but NOT Mac osX installation DVD (tiger or Leopard)

    Hi,
I read a lot of discussion but I didn't find the same problem.
So I have a MBP 15", 2.16Ghz intel core duo, and 2 Go RAM.
I have the 10.5.8 version installed, and I want to erase the disk and do a re-install of 10.5 because I've got some bugs :
    - my MBP starts really slowly (about 15min),
    - it bugs when I suspend the activity (black screen, nothing works... I have to push the "ON" button a longtime to stop the mac, )
    - and other ponctual bugs.
The problem is that my MBP don't read the installation DVD (leopard or even Tiger).
It reads the DVD, I heard that the DVD turns, but after 3/4 try, the MBP ejects the DVD.
But It reads Blank CD, DVD (many zone)... Only the installation DVD is not reading.
    I've already try :
-to begin in safemode (with SHIFT button => it is not ok)
    - to push "C" key" at the restart (it's not ok, the MBP eject before blue screen.. it seems that the MBP is waiting to eject the install DVD to start)
    - to create an other account (not ok)
    - to restart the V/P RAM 5 times (not ok)
So, Is there a solution ? If the Mac can read sometimes CD or movie DVD, that mean that the otpical drive isn't broken...
    I'm waiting your help
(sorry if there's some english mistakes !)

So, I've tried to start in target disc mod with a firewire.... Not lucky, I can read in the "information System" that my firewire is not recognized. It's weird because I can charge my ipod with firewire, but the target mode doesn't work !!!
    message in french :
    Bus FireWire :

(average Translate = impossible to index firewire's peripherals)
Do you have some solutions... I still not re-install MAC OSX... and I haven't an external HD (not in shop too !!)
