Installation on new hard drive

I have a G4 Quicksilver that had a mechanical failure in the hard drive, so I had a new one installed. I have all of the original installation disks: OS 9.2.1, OS 10.1, displays software, and software restore (4 of them). I don't really need OS 9 (couldn't tell you the last time I used it) and was using OS 10.3 (have that installation disks as well). If I install OS 10 first, and run software update, can I then just run the software restore? Will it cause any problems that I won't have OS 9 installed? Does software restore allow you to choose the applications you want to install, so that I don't end up with those that only run in OS 9?
Thanks for your help.

I do not understand why you want to run Software Restore if you have OS 10.3. SR simply installs everything that was on the computer when you bought it. In your case this is an obsolete OS plus other stuff like Safari etc. But those other programs are also on the 10.3 CD.
As for your specific question, the SR CD's I have had did allow both a default installation of everything as well as a custom install where you select what you want.

I will be installing a new HD and putting the current one in a firewire external enclosure. Right now I have Comcast high speed internet service. Is that just a provider or a browser too? If not a browser too,How do I get a new download of Safari on my new HD if I don't have a browser? I originally used AOL to get it but I'm thinking about dumping it and don't want to install it on my new HD. Can I boot from the esternal and install Safari on the new HD?

Hi, Gerald. Comcast is an ISP, not a browser. Safari would be included in a new installation of OS X on your internal drive (it's included on all OS X installer discs). I recommend starting up with your OS X installer discs, formatting the new hard drive with Disk Utility, and installing a brand new copy of Jaguar on it, instead of cloning your old drive onto the new one — which I would recommend if you weren't having trouble with the old OS. Given that your old Jaguar installation is problematic (no drag & drop), it wouldn't make sense to clone it onto the new drive and keep using it. Treat your new drive as an opportunity to start fresh, and reinstall all your software on it from the original source CDs or downloads.

  • Installation of new hard drive leaves me with no bootable device. What do I do?

I recently installed a new hard drive on my hp hdx 16 notebook pc.  Every time I try to put vista back in, it quits half way through and tells me that I need to partition my hard drive.  I need help because the hard drive is blank and I dont know how to partition it.  The installation disk is not partitioning it automatically. My pc also has fingerprint and media smart technology and I need help.

Try booting with a utilty cd to remove any partitions, create 1 and format hdd. I have had good results with free Partition Wizard .Download the Bootable cd iso here .Get ImgBurn here to burn the image to cd.

  • Leopard re installation on new hard drive issue.

    Hello,
Recently my girlfriend and myself took a vacation so we had to bring the Macbook of hers...  Unfortunately the laptop fell out of the luggage and landed FLAT on the bottom.  Looking at the Macbook we got the dreaded gray question mark of death!  I actually am a network engineer at a company and fix many Windows computers so I tried my luck on this, but nothing.  I decided to bite the bullet and took it to a local Mac repair shop and they told me the hard drive was destroyed, which I was grateful it was not the motherboard.  I bought a 500 GB laptop hard drive to reinstall it myself (How hard can it be right?) and of course I run into the problem I am starting this thread for.
Whenever I put in the OS disk for reinstallation I of course am supposed to hold the Option key or potentially the C key for the disk.  Nothing comes up...
I cannot boot to that dang disk to save my life.  It is Leopard 10.5.
Being in an IT field for Windows I thought I could hook up the new hard drive with my jig and install the OS that way.  Seems I did not know about Macs as I thought I did, as I could not do it.
I was wondering if anyone had the same issue as I am having trying to reinstall Leopard.  Kind of didn't want to dish out money for a new Macbook (which we are) yet.  Of course if you need anymore information I would be happy to give it.   If it is a simple solution you have the right to call me dumb cause I don't care at this point lol.  Thanks.

    Hi Kurrman,
Is it the original 10.5 Install Disc for this Book, or a Retail Install Disc?
Could the keyboard not be connected properly?

  • Fresh Snow Leopard Installation on new hard drive & Leopard iLife

I have an early 2009 MBP that came with Leopard 10.5 and upgraded to Snow Leopard. I bought a new hard drive and will need to reinstall OSX. I've read it's possible to perform a fresh install of Snow Leopard without first installing Leopard from the backup disks.
    1) Is this true?
    2) I've heard a fresh Snow Leopard install will not install iLife. Can I reinstall iLife from my Leopard backup disks (that came with the MBP)?
    3) Anything else I should know before installing everything in the new hard drive?
    Many thanks!

    1 True
2 True. You should be able to re-install it from the DVD that came with your computer.
3 You should be fine If you have a drive enclosure, you might be able to plug it in and use that to transfer all your stuff from the old drive to the new one.

  • PSE 10 will not launch after installation of new hard drive

    Hello Everyone,
I spent a considerable amount of time chatting with the Adobe Help Center yesterday trying to rectify this problem.  In a nutshell, I had to get my harddrive replaced yesterday and when I tried to re-launch the program it says that I am misssing components and to un-install and re-install (I get that message  when I try to launch Organizer).  When I try to launch the editor, the icon bounces for a bit in the doc and then just dissappears.  Once again, I am going to uninstall and reinstall, but I know I'm missing a step.  I thought for a moment that I didn't have enough memory to install properly, but I have plenty.  With the help of the Abode help desk, I did make sure tht my permissions were set correctly, but this did nothing to solve the problem.  I was able to reinstall Lightroom, no problem, but PSE is giving me a headache.
Also, I did get an error 5 message yesterday.
    Any other ideas out there??
    Mac
    OS X 10.8.2
PSE 10 (I also tried to install 11, no go)

Mmarlin1974 you confirmed one of my suspicions which was that you restored the software initially from your Time Machine volume.  This can lead to a variety of issues such as what you are experiencing.
I searched and I did not find anything specific on a configuration error 5.
My best advise would be to format, reinstall, and only restore your documents and settings from your Time Machine volume.  Adobe applications are not currently designed to be simply copied from one computer to another which is what basically happens when you restored it from Time Machine.  I have seen Users who have restored from Time Machine, or have utilized the Migration Assistant, spend days trying to recover.  They often have undocumented errors which are difficult to track down due to the failure of the copying process.  By copying only your documents and settings it helps ensure you don't end up having additional difficulties such as those you are currently experiencing.

Well, let's hope that nothing was jiggled out of place when you were installing the new hard drive. Your optical drive may just be out of alignment or the disc you have is "dirty." Get a lint-free cloth and some rubbing alcohol, then clean the disc as thoroughly as you can starting from the center and working outward in a concentric circlular motion. See if that helps. In particular clean the inner portion well.
If this does not help, then you have a problem. You have opened the computer yourself. That action voids all support from Apple. If you take the computer in for service the store may refuse to service the computer. This is not related to your now expired warranty.

  • HT201372 used this to make a bootable copy for a new hard drive installation. copied the install find but gave error code 110 when making the disk bootable.. Any help in what this code is

Used createinstallmedis to make a copy of the Mavericks app for use in a new hard drive install.. Copied find but gave error code 110 and failed to make the flash drive bootable.. Any help in what errror code means?

Did you partition and format the flash drive first? See the following:
Make Your Own Mavericks, Mountain/Lion Installer
After downloading the installer you must first save the Install Mac OS X application. After the installer downloads DO NOT click on the Install button. Go to your Applications folder and make a copy of the installer. Move the copy into your Downloads folder. Now you can click on the Install button. You must do this because the installer deletes itself automatically when it finishes installing.
       2. Get a USB flash drive that is at least 8 GBs. Prep this flash drive as follows:
Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
After DU loads select your flash drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the leftside list. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list.
Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to an hour depending upon the flash drive size.
Make your own Mavericks flash drive installer using the Mavericks tool:
Mavericks has its own built-in installer maker you use via the Terminal:
You will need a freshly partitioned and formatted USB flash drive with at least 8GBs. Leave the name of the flash drive at the system default, "Untitled." Do not change this name. Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder. Copy this command line after the prompt in the Terminal's window:
    sudo /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/Untitled --applicationpath /Applications/Install\ OS\ X\ Mavericks.app --nointeraction
Press RETURN. Enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed to the screen so be careful to enter it correctly. Press RETURN, again.
Wait for the process to complete which will take quite some time.

When I try to install ios lion the installer says my hard drive has SMART errors and that I need to buy a new Hard Drive, but my computer witch has snowleprd and runs just fine.

SMART is a technology that monitors the drive for signs of impending failure. You can verify that SMART is indicating a problem in Disk Utility. Select the hard drive and look at the bottom of the window. It should look like this:
If the SMART status is not "Verified" then you should back up your drive and start shopping for a new one.

  • Installing a new hard drive.  How to make installer dvd from current OS

I have a iMac G5 (PPC).  2004 when I got it.  And have the original HD.  150 GB.  Following Murphy's Law this HD is due for failure.  I have bought a 1 TB. new hard drive to install on this machine.  I forgot which OS came with it (10.3) I think. My set up is that I back up my iMac G5 (PPC) to a external Hard drive (300GB) with Time Machine. I have updated thru software update to 10.5.8.  But have no DVD installer for 10.5.8.
How can I make an installer for my new hard drive?  Or should I partition new 1TB hard drive with the same amount of space as my time machine back up?  I may not put everything on current system on new drive.

If the old harddrive is working, why don't you copy the old to the new?
In Leopard, you can resize partitions without loosing data.
Here are two utilities for making a complete backup of your internal hard drive.  I've recommend using one of these so that you can create a bootable system  on your external hard drive. ( PPC require a firewire connected drive. )  Once created, you can run your system from the external drive.  Hold down the option key on your keyboard then power on your machine.  This will bring you in startup manager click on the drive image you wish to boot then click on the arrow key to the right.

    Problems installing OS
I have an iMac 21.5 (mid-2010) and I'm trying to install a new hard drive.  When I choose the installation disk the Apple logo comes up and it stops there.  Then the mouse and keyboard goes dead.  I'm trying to install 10.6.  Any help would be appreciated.  Thanks

Since you have a new hard drive, there is nothing on it, so you need to boot from an external source (and probably format the hard drive before installing an OS). Are you booting from the 10.6 install disk? Better yet - do you have a bootable backup clone or at least a Time Machine backup?

Okay, so, fast forward from July to now -
    - I've visited my closest Apple store's genius bar twice now. (Over an hour and a half away.)
    - My computer spent at least 8 hours behind their closed doors in the workshop
    - Several complete erases of the harddrive have taken place
    - Most of the Apple geniuses I dealt with were nice and very knowledgeable, but they were and still aren't 100% sure exactly what is wrong with my computer.
    The good news is:
    - They were able to at least get it running again, with a clean install from their servers of OS X Lion 10.7.5
    - They believe that my problems stem from either 1 of 2 things:
            - Faulty Hard Drive (even though it is brand new)
             - The wrong build of software being installed.
Now, while the wrong build does seem like it could be the problem, it doesn't make sense in the aspect that all of the initial problems began when the first hard drive failed. The same problems continued when I changed out the failed hard drive with the brand spanking new one, and only slightly improved when I was able to successfully install the OS that came with the original disks for my computer. I'm not convinced this thing is back to normal, but hopefully I can make it last through getting a shiny new retina Macbook Pro in the coming future. Thank you so much to everyone who read and replied to this post!
