  • Solaris 8 installation in MS Virtual pc

Hi everybody ,iam new to solaris environment.Iam installing Solaris8 in virtual pc.
The message its showing is :please specify the media from which you will install the solaris operating environment.
I have selected the cd/dvd option as the source is the .iso image of the solaris s/w i downloaded from sun site.
But it is giving the same message even when i tried all the 3 CD images.
Can anybody suggest ....Thanks in advance.

Unless you have a specific need for solaris 8, solaris 10 x86 is much more installation friendly and is 100% backward binary compatible. Solaris 8 requires the DCA diskette (device config assistant) which is a floppy image.
Again, unless you have a reqirement for solaris 8, 10 is easier (no DCA, direct cdrom access, just works).
Another typical problem people experience with all of these downloads, though, is that they are not using the free Solaris Download Manager to retrieve the CD images. More often than not, when people get cd boot problems, it's not a good download. SDM can do connection retries, etc.

  • Live Installer built on Virtual Machine

    Hello,
I installed Arch on vmware fusion, with the attempt of setting up a system with my customized services ( ssh, ftp, among others ), and in the process of such learning about the distro.
In the end, I will like that once I am comfortable with my Arch setup in the virtual machine, that I could replicate the same into a real physical machine.
So, my question will be whether the Live CD create options available for Arch will allow me to do so, and if there may be any limitations since I will create the system "template" in a virtual machine.
Is there any recommended Live installer creator? Should I worry about virtual and physical hardware differences in specs/sizes, etc?
    Thanks,

you should be able to dd the virtual blockdevice to a physical one, and increase the size of the last partition and filesystem to completely fill the disk.
    then rebuild the initcpio.
if you have lvm, it's easier of course.
you can also make filesystems on the physical hardware, install grub in there, and rsync everything

  • Installation using a virtual host created .dbenv with wrong hostname

Discovered that during the installation of a Solution Manager on Solaris that the .dbenv_<hostname>.sh and .dbenv_<hostname>.csh and were created with <hostname> = Virtual name. However the .profile uses the 'hostname' to determine which .dbenv to use. Since 'hostname' returns the actual server name and not the virtual name the db environment is not set.
This is easily resolved by renaming the .dbenv to the actual host name. My concern and question is whether this will cause me issues down the road and also I cannot seem to find anyone else or SAP note that reflects this issue.
    Please advise...Thanks...
    David

    Hello David
We always install using virtual hostnames here, using seperated ip addresses (physical host X with IP Y and virtual host S with IP T) using sapinst option SAPINST_USE_HOSTNAME=<shortname virtual hostname> and we have those profiles with the virtual hostname after installation.
    Kind regards

  • Move Exchange 2013 installation to new virtual machine

Currently have: 1 virtual server - Server 2012 (DC, Global Catalog), Exchange 2013 CU1 installation (yes I know- dont install Exchange on DC etc etc ... ). Server2012/Exchange2013 is installed on one VMDK, EDB and logs are saved on another VMDK.
Want to do: Create second virtual machine and install Server 2012 (different name), add it as a member to the same domain (also in the same network), install Exchange 2013, move all mailboxes to the new server, uninstall the old Exchange 2013.
Question is- is it possible to somehow unmount the existing database (I am only using one database for mailboxes and public folders) and mount it to the new server or do I have to create a new database on the new server and move the mailboxes there? I've
heard that the Exchange EDB databases were supposed to be portable between same versions of Exchange.
    Any advice is appreciated.

    Hi,
Agree with Andy, to avoid down time, we can depend on database portability.
And here are the steps you can refer to:
    1. Install new Exchange server on the member server.
    2. Move Mailbox Database using Database Portability:
    http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876926(v=exchg.150).aspx
    3. Move the public folders (if any), re-home the offline address book, and move your SMTP connectors
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/822931
    4. Remove the old Exchange server.
    Thanks,

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm a bit confused on the instructions from
http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd876926(v=exchg.150).aspx- does step 4 instruct me to overwrite the newly created database (on the new server) with the old database and then mount it on the new server? Also, as the public folders are now in
a mailbox on the same database- aren't they moved with the database without extra hassle?
Also the link you gave me in Step 3 in your post refers to Exchange 2003.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Windows in a virtual machine

    Hi,
my new X200s comes with Vista Business preloaded and 3 CDs marked as "Windows XP Rescue and Recovery Disc", and "Windows XP Professional SP2 Product Recovery Disc 1 & 2", respectively. I want to repartition the disk, deleting Vista in the process, to install 64-bit Ubuntu linux, and then to install Windows XP either in VMware or VirtualBox virtual machine. The question is, are the provided CDs sufficient to make an XP installation in a virtual machine?
    Thanks for any hints.
    Jakub
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

No, you cannot install XP in a virtual machine with the restore discs supplied with your machine. You will need a regular XP install cd and a valid key number. This has to do with the fact that the restore cd's would see a generic virtual machine BIOS instead of the actual Lenovo BIOS and refuse to install.

  • [Solved] Black screen - Installation issues on Dell Inspiron 1720

    Hi,
I'm new to Archlinux, and i want to post my experience/issues of my first installation:
I performance the core installation (base + devel packages and wireless tools as extra package)
    relevant hardware/drivers used:
    b44 for broadcom nic (wired)
    iwl3945 for my wireless nic
intel g965 graphics card (intel GM965 express chipset - xf86-video-intel driver)
Installation went ok till i had to upgrade the system:
    pacman -Suy (after package synchronization)
    glibc: /usr/bin/tzselect exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zdump exists in filesystem
    glibc: /usr/sbin/zic exists in filesystem
After some research on the wiki i found that i had to query the packages to know if those files are owned by a program or not (if no pakcage owns those i could remove them, but it was not the case)
    pacman -Qo tzselect
    pacman -Qo zdump
    pacman -Qo zic
All were owned by the package tzdata:
so i reinstalled the package tzdata:
    pacman -S tzdata
Has this to be filed as a bug or is this a stupid newbie error? (did the installation on a virtual machine, on a laptop (twice) and always got this error)
After that i was able to upgrade the system.
Following that i installed the video card drivers:
pacman -S xf86-video-intel and i rebooted the system.
After reboot i got the grub screen, booted the system and got a black screen (last thing i saw as something like loading udevevents..)
Googling again and looking the forums here, i read that i had to chroot my environment and update the system again (pacman -Suy -> which did not help).
Soo after some more searching i found 2 things:
    - https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/KM … odesetting  : i added this in menu.lst: nomodeset
    - i blacklisted the intel driver
Rebooted and i my graphics were working again.
So later on i'll test if the parameter solved my problem, or blacklisting the driver.
    - i'll unblacklist the driver and reboot -> if it works then i know it's that parameter
    - if not ok, i'll blacklist the driver and remove the parameter from the menu.lst
I hope to find what's causing the issue.
Anyone having issues with the intel driver?
    Thanks for sharing your experience/info.

Getting a little bit further, it requires a lot of configuration to get what you want..
    - I just installed fluxbox
    - added my user to the sudo group (allowing to reboot)
    - installed Slim
What's i've noticed also is that when you select an interface in etc/rc.conf, for example, eth0, and it's not connected at bootup, you lose like 10 seconds before the boot process proceeds.
If you out-comment that line, you get a red line (error) saying that no interface is definded.
I guess i'll just have to disable the network daemon at startup and install some kind of network connection manager for my wireless at logon.

I had this problem the best thing to do is make sure you have the Blackdown.org JDK116_v5 for Linux installed. Then:
    JAVA_HOME=/somedirectory/jdk116_v5
    export JAVA_HOME
This fixed the problem for me and I was able to run runIns.sh.

  • New SQL Server Failover Cluster Installation - No disk is available to select in section "Cluster Disk Slection"

    Hello Everyone,
I am in a deep need for your help regarding the problem I am facing.
I am doing a New SQL Server Failover Cluster Installation in a virtual server that is part of a failover cluster. I am able to complete all the steps successfully but, when I reach the point where I am supposed to select the shared disk that will
be included in the SQL server resource cluster group, I don't find any disk in the list (as u can see in the figure below).
I have already created the a 2 nodes failover cluster and added 3 disks (1 as a witness in Quorum and 2 other available storage).
No roles were created, 2 nodes are available and 1 network is there in the cluster.
If u take a look at the message it say: "The search for mount points failed. Error: the system cannot find the path specified". What is this and how can I solve this issue??
Thanks in advance for your support and looking forward for your valuable feedbacks.

    Dear Ashwin,
I have granted the privileges mentioned in the link you provided as below:
Act as Part of the Operating Sywstem = SeTcbPrivileg
      Bypass Traverse Checking = SeChangeNotify
Lock Pages In Memory = SeLockMemory
Log on as a Batch Job = SeBatchLogonRight
Log on as a Service = SeServiceLogonRight

Disk : 320 GB Serial ATA
    RAM : 8 GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM
CPU : Intel CoreTM i5 I know Tim wrote interest article about RAC 11gR2 installation using Vmware on Linux, But, I really appreciate if someone have tried this on Windows 7 and provide me the steps since the installation of the virtual machines, setup of shared storage until installtion of the clusterware, ASM and the databases,
    Thanks a lot,

    thank you Werner,
But, this article written by Tim is about installation based on linux as the OS of the host machine and Windows as the OS of the virtual ones.
Just looking for an article about eveything based on windows,

  • Virtual box install ?

I have been trying to download the oracle express R2 on my laptop and found that I cannot do this as I have a vista home premium 32bit os installed. I was advised that I could download the virtualbox and then install oracle dbase on here, I have downloaded and installed the virtual box but it will not install the oracle dbase as it is not a OVF file. Does anyone know where I can get this or how I can change my unpacked dbase installation software onto virtual box software.
I am new to this so a step by step guide would be appreciate.
    Thank you

Many people on this forum scream and shout about Oracle not being supported on any "home" edition of Windows and say that it won't work, but that is rubbish. I have been running all realeases of 10g and 11g on Vista Home Premium for years.
    >
Oracle is NOT supported on any "home" edition of Windows and that is NOT rubbish. It is direct from the many Installation Guides that Oracle publishes.
There are a lot of things you can do with Oracle that may actually work or may only appear to work under certain circumstances.
That doesn't have anything at all to do with whether that release is supported by Oracle or not. Anything that is not supported is used at your own risk.
Here is the link and quote from the Express Edition Installation Guide
    http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E17781_01/install.112/e18803/toc.htm

Microsoft Windows Server 2003 R2 - all editions
Microsoft Windows Server 2008 - Standard, Enterprise, Datacenter, Web, and Foundation editions. The Server Core option is not supported.
Microsoft Windows 7 - Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate editions
    >
Please tell us which of the above indicate that any 'home' edition is supported.
    >
keep quiet about it being "home" Windows.
    >
    Absolutely TERRIBLE advice.
OP (and everyone) needs to know that Oracle DB is NOT supported on ANY 'home' edition of Windows. It might run or it might not. There might be screwy things that happen that can't be explained or maybe, based on the limited use by OP, no apparent problems manifest themselves.
Based on OPs post they didn't run the DB installer; they tried to import a preconfigured VM image, an OVF file. And although VirtualBox will run on a 'home' edition OP still must install a 'host OS' withing virtualbox for the Oracle DB to run on. And that 'host OS' cannot be a 'home' edition of windows.
So it is more than relevant that OP know the risks they are taking if they use a 'home' edition of Windows and then expect ANY Oracle product to run on it without problems if it is not supported by Oracle.

  • Virtual memory exhausted when compiling packages from AUR

Recently I've seen this error more and more often. When I tried compiling some packages from AUR, I ended up getting "virtual memory exhausted" error. The first time it happened with clementine-git, then android-studio. Can I do something about it?

I am also facing the same problem.  I am trying to install a package, and the installations aborts saying 'virtual memory exhausted'. The RAM is 2 GB and i have alloted 2 GB as swap.  Things i have tried so far
    -install  using yaourt
    -install using  makepkg.
    -change  TMPDIR to HDD.
Even when i tried it without any window manager to start, limiting the RAM usage, the problem still persists. The only way is to allot an extra swap space, but that would mean that i will have to delete a partition, which is not a feasible solution. Is there anything else one could do. ?

  • Public and virtual IPs need to be on same subnet?

Is it necessary to have the virtual and public IPs on the same subnet to set up an Oracle RAC?
I have read on some tutorials that it is required, but I could not find any restriction like that in the installation guide.

    Hi,
It is documented in Oracle Clusterware and Real Applicaiton Cluster Installation Guide as given below-
One public IP address for each node, to be used as the Virtual IP address for client connections and for connection failover.
During installation this public virtual IP address (VIP) is associated with the same
interface name on every node that is part of your cluster. The IP addresses that you use for all of the nodes that are part of a cluster must be from the same subnet. If you have a domain name server (DNS), then register the host names for the VIP with the DNS. The VIP should not be in use at the time of the installation, because this is a VIP that Oracle Clusterware manages.
    Thanks & Regards
