Installation problem on Dell P4 machine...
While I was trying to install Solaris 8 to a Dell P4 machine (8100 series), after the "Copyright..." line, the installation process never gets to the section where it should display "Configuring /dev and /devices".
Each time the installation gets to the menu to choose the installation method (Interactive or JumpStart), after running a few more processes, the system displays "Skipping System Dump: No dump device configured" and then the machine reboots. It keeps doing the same thing over and over but I do not see any error message and the screen clears rigth away when it reboots.
Any help would be appreciated.
This case is similar to the case handled by Jurgen Keil on Digest Number 385 except that my case, it has a different error message.
At the prompt "Select type of installation" (or the prompt
"Select (b)oot or (i)nterpreter:", I type the command "b kadb -d". I see a General Protection Fault and some messages which cause the system to reboot. But I can't capture all the errors/messages cuz there's no system dump device configured.
How do I configured the system dump device so I can send you more details?
Thank you.

There is a Sun bug (4389589) that says you need the new JDK 1.2.2_007 to run on
the P4 (it's one of the specific fixes in list for the JDK). I don't have a P4,
but if you try to use this newer JDK and it works, can you let me know?

Solaris 8 installation problem on Dell PowerEdge 500SC
Hi,
I am having TWO PROBLEMS installing Solaris 8 on Dell PowerEdge 500SC.
This hardware spec is:
Pentium-III at 1GHz
256MB 133MHz ECC SDRAM
20GB 7200RPM ATA100 EIDE hard drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
48X EIDE CD-ROM drive (on integrated ATA-100 controller)
Motherboard: unknown
more details: http://www.dell.com/us/en/esg/topics/esg_pedge_sc_towermain_servers_3_pedge_500sc.htm
FIRST PROBLEM is the following message was shown at the hardware probe.
WARNING: ACPI Tables not in Reclaim Memory
Warning: Resource Conflict - both devices are added
NON-ACPI device: PNP0C01
Port: C00-C01, C06-C08, C14, C50-C52, C6C-C6F,
CD6-CD7
F50-F57
ACPI device: PNP0C01
Port 814-85B, 580-58F, C00-CD7, F50-F58
At this time, I was using "Solaris 8 (Intel Platform Edition) 10/01" released version.
I am not sure what this means, but it was RESOLVED with using newer "x86 DCA boot diskette (Patch-ID# 110930-05)".
But, the SECOND REAL PROBLEM is another one. It just happens booting the kernel after the hardware probe. I get the following messages about 2 minutes later, after beginning to load kernel.
WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: abort request, target=0 lun=0
WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: about device, target=0 lun=0
WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset target, target=0 lun=0
WARNING:/pci@0,0/pci-ide@1/ata@1 (ata1): timeout: reset bus, target=0 lun=0
After another 1 or 2 minutes I get more error and the system reboots.
Please give me any suggestion or advice!
Thanks.
KazuyoshiI've been having the exact same problems on a PowerEdge 500SC. I have managed to get Solaris up and running on the machine, however. I booted the DCA from the floppy disk and installed from the CD-ROM. When the DCA is ready to scan for devices I use the "Specific Scan" option to tell it to look for specific devices. I tell it to scan for all devices in the listing and in doing so the DCA finds ISA-based IDE controllers. After it provides a listing of the devices it found I use the "Device Tasks" option and the "View/Edit Devices" menu item then delete the Bus Mastering IDE controller device. Once the screen comes up to ask for a boot device, the drives will show up as on the ISA controllers.
I have to go through this process every time I boot the machine but I am able to make the system run at least.
I haven't figured out the ACPI problem, yet.

Many problems with a fresh installation on a DELL LAtitude E5510
Hi all,
i'm writing to let you know about so many problems and issues I'm experiencing with my new laptop. I love arch, but i think this is the pc which gave me the hugest number of problems. Most of them I think are arch-related, but some not...or maybe i don't know...probably all of them are because of my stupidity
1
the first was the problem with the keyboard. I was not able to use properly some chars like @#e in many applications (firefox, writer, kate (in kde)). TTY shell was properly working. Keyboard has been properly set in rc.conf and with setxkb. I partially solved installing gnome (and since here same problem) then i installed gnome extra and it seems to work now. I tested fedora and ubuntu live version and there wasn't any problem. I opened a thread for this
2
the problem related to shutdown is discussed here and is still unresolved. I don't know why, but i can't shut it down, it only restarts, also after the message "POWER OFF". No problems with ubuntu and fedora from the live cd. If i select shut down, i can correctly shut down
3
the third is a microphone problem. I tried with cited distros, but i'm not able to record anything and therefore no skype conversation is possible. I can hear but cannot be heard. I have 2 mics, a built' in and an exetrnal jack. I tried many combination with line in, front mic...but nothing to do.
4
i created a dual boot with win 7. from disk utility in gnome i saw that the windows partition is sda3. then i set the menu.lst with rootnoverify hd(0,2) but it gives me an error message saying: no MBR boot loader is installed. I'm very confused. so many problem on only a machine ( a dell brand new machine - people say dell is very compatible with linux...but...i'm not pretty sure)
I wanted just to signal this situation. I don't knwo if you can help me. I don't know anymore what to do.
Thanks a lot for your patience and your help!lang2 wrote:Have you resolved any of these issues? I probably will try to install Arch on the same laptop. This is a warning for me.
Hi,
well, i think that if you want to use all functionalities with this laptop, no linux distribution will give you the full support! I experienced all those problems, but i solved in some way some of them. Read the following!
1
the first was the problem with the keyboard. I opened a thread for this
This issue has been solved when i re-installed AGAIN arch! i don't what was before...but now, i'm writing from here, with GNOME. I don't know, but the only difference wrt the previous gnome installation was the partition scheme: i used a partition for boot, one for /var, one for home, etc...as explained in beginner's guide. I don't think it's related, but it's the only difference i can remember.
2
the problem related to shutdown is discussed here and is still unresolved. I don't know why, but i can't shut it down, it only restarts, also after the message "POWER OFF". No problems with ubuntu and fedora from the live cd. If i select shut down, i can correctly shut down
this issue has been solved after one of the last system update. Actually i'm able to shut down and reboot correctly.
3
the third is a microphone problem. I tried with cited distros, but i'm not able to record anything and therefore no skype conversation is possible. I can hear but cannot be heard. I have 2 mics, a built' in and an exetrnal jack. I tried many combination with line in, front mic...but nothing to do.
This is still unresolved!! I also asked in alsa irc-channel, the guy gave me instructions to perform some tests, and at the end, he said that he never heard about that chipset!
Actually, sound is fine, mic doens't work. I tried ubuntu, fedora (both in live cd mode) and with all of them i'm not able to record any sound from mic. The strange thing is that in volume control there are controls for mic, but even if you enable them, you're not able to record. If you close and re-open volum control, they are again disabled. Nothing to do actually!

i created a dual boot with win 7. from disk utility in gnome i saw that the windows partition is sda3. then i set the menu.lst with rootnoverify hd(0,2) but it gives me an error message saying: no MBR boot loader is installed. I'm very confused. so many problem on only a machine ( a dell brand new machine - people say dell is very compatible with linux...but...i'm not pretty sure)
I don't know why, but if I set hd(0,1) it works!
MORE1:
the SD-card reader, simply doesn't work! checked on internet i seems to be incompatible with linux!
MORE2:
i'm not able to make the touchpad working with side scroll! I didn't work a lot on it, as i'm using the external mouse...but this is an other issue. Just configuring xorg file, it doens't work.
Let us know if you are able to solve any of these.
Good luck -
I have tried to install Solaris 8 on my Dell machine.

Anyone who knows this... please help..
Thanx a lot..I have heard about the ACPI that may be a Power Managemnet Tools or something, it always be found in Microsoft Window 2000 Device Manager, sorry I can't help you to solve the problems.....because I also have some installation problem on my Intel paltform @_@.

Hi ,
I have jdk1.5.0_12 (J2SE) installed on my Windows XP. Now i am trying to install J2EE on my machine.I tried to install it twice but it comes to a halt after completing 45% at the same jar file. Following is the link which shows it comes to a halt.

Oracle Universal Installer (OUI) for 8.1.x Hangs on Machines
with Pentium 4
Processors
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Versions Affected
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Oracle 8.1.5
============
Oracle Universal Installer 1.6.0.9.0
Oracle 8.1.6
=============
Oracle Universal Installer 1.7.0.19.0
Oracle 8.1.7
==============
Oracle Universal Installer 1.7.1.9.0
Platforms Affected
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the
Sun JRE
and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT,
Windows 2000
and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be affected.
Description
~~~~~~~~~~~
When installing Oracle Products with the Oracle Universal
Installer (8.1.x)
on machines that use the Sun JRE and Symmantec JIT, the
installer hangs.
Specifically for the Windows platform, the following version
of the Symmantec
JIT or earlier will encounter the failure:
Symantec Java! JustInTime Compiler Version 3.10.107 for JDK
1.2.
Details regarding this issue can be found at:
http://developer.intel.com/design/processor/future/manuals/knowni ssue.htm
How to determine if you have Symmantec Java for JDK 1.2:
1. Select the file "symcjit.dll" and right click on it.
2. Select Properties, then the Version tab.
3. Under Microsoft Windows*, the properties of the DLL are:
"Symantec Java! JustInTime Compiler Version 3.10.107 for
JDK 1.2 Copyright (C)
1996-99 Symantec Corporation Dynamic Link Library file".
DLLs older than this will also not work. "
Likelihood of Occurrence
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Any platform that uses the Intel Pentium 4 processor, with the
Sun JRE
and Symmantec JIT will encounter this problem. Windows NT,
Windows 2000 and NetWare platforms are confirmed to be
affected.
Possible Symptoms
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The failure typically is that the affected application simply
terminates.
Workaround
~~~~~~~~~~
Not only will OUI be affected by this bug, most of the
post-install
configuration tools will also be affected. Running these
tools with "-nojit"
specified will avoid the hang, but it is not simple to specify
"-nojit" for
some of the products.
The following workaround works for the Windows operating
system:
a. Copy only the install directory from the CD to the hard
disk ,say, e:\temp.
b. Open oraparam.ini and make the following modifications
(Assuming CD
drive is f:)
* Change the "SOURCE=" line to use the full path to the CD
instead of a
relative path. (i.e., SOURCE=f:\stage\products.jar)
* Change the "JRE_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the
CD instead of a
relative path. (i.e.,
JRE_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\jre\1.1.7\1\DataFiles
\Expanded)
* Change the "OUI_LOCATION" line to use the full path to the
CD instead of a
relative path. (i.e.,
OUI_LOCATION=f:\stage\Components\oracle\swd\oui\1.6.0.9.0\1\DataF
iles\Expanded
* Change the "JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS" line to add "-nojit" as the
first argument.
(i.e., JRE_MEMORY_OPTIONS=-nojit -ms16m -mx32m)
^^^^^^
* Other entries should remain the same
c. Launch setup.exe from the temporary location on your hard
drive (i.e.
e:\temp\install\win32\setup.exe). This will use the
modified
oraparam.ini and pick up the information from the CD since
the absolute
locations are specified.
Choose a Custom install and choose not to create a database
during the
install. This way, the Database Configuration Assistant will
not be launched
during installation.
The Net8 Configuration Assistant will still be launched, and
there is no way
to suppress it. You will need to kill the Net8 Configuration
Assistant if it
hangs due to the bug. The installation still will have been
successful, and
you can run the DBCA and NetCA after installation.
To kill NetCA if it hangs during installation:
In the "Configuration Tools" window, highlight the "Net8
Configuration
Assistant" and click "Stop". If that does not work, look for
the most recent
JRE process using the Task Manager, and kill it manually.
NOTE: the OUI
itself will also have a jre process. Be sure to kill the one
with the most
recent date, which should be the jre process being used for
Net8CA, not the
one for OUI itself.
After killing the configuration tools and continuing through
the installation
to the "End of Installation" screen, you should modify the
configuration tools
to use "-nojit", then call the appropriate tools from the
Start Menu.
Once installation is complete, each of the following files in
the ORACLE_HOME
needs to be modified:
assistants\dbca\dbassist.cl
assistants\dbma\dbmig.cl
assistants\ifa\ifa.cl
bin\elogin.cl
bin\owm.cl
ldap\oidamdin\oidadmin.cl
network\tools\netasst.cl
network\tools\netca.cl
owm\install\instelogin.cl
owm\install\instowm.cl
Edit the contents of the above files to add "-nojit" as shown
below:
Command=("C:\Program Files\Oracle\jre\1.1.7\BIN\JREW" -nojit
-classpath ....
this is the only thing you need to add --> ^^^^^^
Then, launch the necessary tools, like Net8CA and DBCA from
the Start Menu.
Patches
~~~~~~~
Currently there is not a patched installer available to deal
with this
problem, the workaround listed above must be used.

The solution of making a local copy of the installation CD on

Windows ME
Solution to the installation of Oraclei8.1.7 PE in Windows Millennium
Oracle does not support installing version 8.1.7 PE into
Windows Millennium.
As an unsupported workaround, you may add the following line
to the [compatibility95] section of win.ini prior to
installation:
Jrew=0x00080000
After setup is complete, Oracle will recommend a reboot.
There is one additional step necessary prior to reboot;
Oracle may add a non-standard path statement to the
autoexec.bat file. Please modify this SET PATH
statement to use short-filenames if you find a quoted
LFN string represented as part of the path. You can
confirm that the path was merged successfully into the
registry after reboot by examining the PATH variable
in the registry at
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\SessionManager\Environment
Symptoms of a missing Oracle path statement in the registry are that Net8 Easy Config will not launch.
Please note that Oracle does not support the use of this
product in Windows ME, but have authorized these workarounds
for testing purposes only.

Windows XP Home Edition
Oracle 8i is not certified on windows XP. Even if yes, it must be Windows XP Professional.
You can install Oracle8i on windows XP Home Edition, try like this:
1 - Copy your Oracle CD into hard disk in your
machine. For example Copy from oracle8i CD into C:\Oracle\ ...
2 - Search the two files named Symcjit.dll on the D drive (where you have copied Oracle8i. You can found them in (example):
C:\Oracle\stage\Components\oracle.swd.jre\1.1.7.30\1
\DataFiles\Expanded\jre\win32\bin\symcjit.dll
3 - Rename this file (Example): symcjit_back.dll (make sure to find two files and rename them)
4 - Execute the Oracle setup.exe from C:\Oracle\setup.exe
===============================================================
When Oracle 8i dies on the install or the installer hangs, here is the fix for this, make sure that you have Service Pack 2 installed.
1. \JRE\1.3.1\ From Sun. (You can download java program at http://java.sun.com/products/jdk/1.1/jre/download-jre-windows.html)
2. Install the java file.
There is also a problem in the installation disk.
3. Make a copy of the Oracle 8i disk on the local hard disk.
4. Do a search for the two files called symcjit.dll and rename them for example: symcjit.old.
5. Install Oracle from the win32 directory.

Cause:
This problem is caused by incorrect data which should have been removed from the source system before the export.
Solution:
There are two possible workarounds:
1. Modify DDL<dbs>.TPL (<dbs> = ADA, DB2, DB4, DB6, IND, MSS, ORA) BEFORE the R3load TSK files are generated;
search for the keyword "negdat:" and add "CLU4" and "VER_CLUSTR" to this line.
2. Modify the TSK file (most probably SAPCLUST.TSK) BEFORE R3load import is (re-)started;
search for the lines starting with "D CLU4 I" and "D VER_CLUSTR I" and change the status (i.e. "err" or "xeq") to "ign" or remove the lines. -

1) Vista is not an operating system. It is a family of operating systems. Which operating system within that family are you using?windows 7.

2) Oracle Database is designed to work on a server. It should have a static IP address and host name, or at least use a loopback adapter as a workaround. How is the IP address and host name on your Vista-xyz assigned?
using it for local machine in laptop.
HOST = FAXCOOLWAREZ037)(PORT = 1521)

Hopefully you are not using DHCP to assign the IP address, or you were sharp enough to install the loopback adapter first.
