Installation problems - Leopard installer doesn't recognise harddrive

I've installed a new drive in my Macbook Pro and am facing some problems installing 10.5 Leopard.
Specs of stuff are:
Machine: Macbook Pro 2.4 15.4in (Late 2007)
New drive: Western Digital Scorpio Blue 320Gb
Old drive: Fujitsu 160Gb (original drive)
So I backed everything up and dismantled the machine and fit the new drive. No problems there.
Booted from the 10.4 Tiger discs that came with the machine to do a fresh install. This detected the new drive fine, allowed me to partition it and merrily installed Tiger.
I then turned to the drop-in cd of Leopard that came with the machine to upgrade to Leopard. Booted into that fine and then the first problem. The installer says it can't fine a Tiger install to upgrade.
Disk utility from the install disk doesn't show the drive. Not just the partitions, but the drive itself.
System Profiler does show the drive but doesn't display much information about it, in particular, the "Partition Type" is listed as "Unknown".
So, I rebooted into Tiger and everything was fine.
Thinking the partition was somehow not right, I attached and external drive, and used a retail copy of Leopard to install 10.5 onto that. I then booted the machine from the external drive.
And the new internal drive appears when the machine is booted.
So the Leopard startup disc can't see the partition, but Leopard booted and running can. Very strange.
Anyway, when booted from the external drive, I wiped the new internal drive by writing zeroes to it. Re-created the partition (ensuring that the type was "GUID Partition Table" to make it bootable) a couple of times. Wrote zeroes again and partitioned again just to make sure and rebooted from the retail Leopard install disc.
And again, Leopard fails to show the new drive as an install destination or in Disk Utility. It does appear in the System Profiler again, but again it is listed as Partition Type: Unknown".
So in short, Tiger will detect and install to this drive, but Leopard won't even detect it from the install discs (both retail and upgrade).
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Ben.

If you have a retail copy of Leopard I would suggest using it rather than first installing Tiger and trying to use an Upgrade disc.
As for the new drive I suggest doing the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder. If you need to reformat your startup volume, then you must boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger or Leopard.)
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Set the number of partitions from the drop down menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (only required for Intel Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
You should now be able to install OS X once the formatting has completed.

  • Solved. Installer doesn't detect harddrives

Hello, so this is my first time trying to install arch linux outside of virtualbox and the installer doesn't seem to detect my hard drives.
I get to the point in installation where I'm supposed to partition my harddrives and nothing is there, so I selected other and by using "dmesg | grep sd" I managed to find out that the drive i wanted to contain my arch install was called sdb. I wrote /dev/sdb in the "other"-box and was able to partition my hard dive the way I want. However, when I get to the step where I'm supposed to set my filesystems mountpoints there is no detected hard drives and no "other" option, so I'm pretty much stuck there.
I have tried searching but I didn't find anything on this particular problem, only GRUB related issues. Is there anyone here that know how to solve this?
Sorry for my English, it's not my first language but hopefully i made some sense at least.
edit, I forgot to add that I have tried the legacy IDE booting method too, but it did not help.

I have no idea why the installer doesn't detect your hardrive, but you should be able to workaround by mounting the partitions manually.
    - mount the root partition to /mnt
    - create a directory in /mnt for each separate partition
    - mount all the partitions
then go to the step after setting hard drives in the installer.
I'm not sure this will work, just try. the installer should complains that you did not set any mountpoints, maybe entering the Set Filesystem Mountpoints step, and exiting with DONE can fix this.
Thanks for your reply, will try that.
One question tho, how would I set the swap partition using that method?

  • Installer doesn't recognise serial number

I have just downloaded CS6 to upgrade 5.5. The installer asks for my CS5.5 serial number which I have entered correctly from the records on my Adobe account but it wont recognise the serial number, I get an error message saying it is not a qualifying product (which it is?) - how do I resolve this?

First make sure you are using an apples to apples serial number.  If the CS5.5 is a suite while CS6 is not, or vice versa, that can cause the problem.
Then, make sure you are using the right serial number.
    To locate the serial number:
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/find-serial-number.html
If all else fails, you need to contact Adobe Support either by chat or via phone when you have serial number and activation issues.

  • HT3910 Snow Leopard install DVD fail. Installer doesn't show up.

I had upgraded my Mac to 10.9 and i wanted a fresh start. So i erased the hard drive and then i tried to install Snow Leopard using the install DVD . I keep trying and nothing happens, the installer doesn't show up plus i can't see any startup disks. I tried remote install using a windows computer but nothing. Any suggestions?

Have you ever run 10.6 on that computer? If Internet Recovery gave you Lion, is that the OS your computer came with? If so, you can't shouldn't install Snow Leopard.

when I went to the library folder there was no receipts only
    com.adobe.Reader whihc included install.log
so I guess that means something is missing?
If above still doesn't resolve problem - go to the folder named

not you Users Library) and delete the file named Adobe Photoshop

  • Windows 7 installation will not recognise the Bootcamp disc!

I have a 2008 Macbook running Snow leopard.
Installed Win 7 via bootcamp but when I insert the Mac Snow Leopard disc to install the Bootcamp drivers etc after the Win 7 install has succeeded, the Windows 7 installation will not recognise the disc!
    Any ideas
    Thanks in advance

If you used your Leopard DVD then it won't work.
As ScuseMe said only the OSX Snow Leopard DVD contains the drivers for Windows 7.

  • Windows 8 installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition

    Hello,
    I followed this instructions : http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/45898/how-to-install-windows-8-on-a-mac
All works but the installer doesn't want to format the boot camp partition, i click on "option" > "format", i wait like 3-4 seconds (so not enought to format 100Go) and then same error "Windows can't be installed on this partition".
    Any idea ?
    I have :
Macbook Pro 15'' 2,4 GHz Intel Core i5
    Mac OS X v10.7.5
    1 Drive : 320Go
1 USB KEY that i used to install osx lion, so i think it's not the problem.
1 Windows8 64 downloaded from my university, and it works on a PC.

I have the same issue. Dec. 2013 13" macbook pro with 1tb ssd. Windows 8 Pro (have the box/cd).
Why is it that I can find every computer problem I ever have in a thread somewhere where someone else had the same problem too....but the threads never have solutions.  There should be a name for this phenomenon.

  • Installer doesn't work after upgrading to 10.3.3

    Hi,
I'm trying to upgrade from 10.2.8 to 10.3.9. I bought the upgrade to 10.3.3 and installed it (with the upgrade feature, not the archive and install) and now when I try to open the .pkg file for the upgrade to 10.3.9, the installer doesn't work. It opens and a window comes up with a large "X" in the background, but the main dialog box is blank, the two buttons on the bottom right corner of the window are blank, and clicking them doesn't do anything. I know it's the installer because the same thing happens when I try to install other programs.
I can't use the software update feature because I can't get my mac to work with my DSL connection - but that's another story.
Thanks in advance for your help!

    You're Welcome John-Paul!
    Yep, that's the problem!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
Panther, is no longer available directly from the Apple Online Store, as Tiger 10.4.x is the most up to date OS.
A Full Retail Version, of the Panther Install CDs, or a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased rather inexpensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, AppleRescue, FastMac, etc.
Be sure not to again purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Panther is only on CDs, not DVDs.

Once Panther 10.3.x is installed, you can use the 10.3.9 Combo Update, to upgrade to the final version.
If your Mac meets the System Requirements for Tiger, you could also consider installing that.
And then use the PPC 10.4.8 Combo Update.

  • Somehow Windows 10 preview installer doesn't recognize bootcamp partition/disk which is in GPT.

    This problem became tricky now.
I already searched this support communities and found many similar questions.
But most of them were that the disk is in GPT but Windows expected MBR.
There is another case where Windows installer expects GPT but the disk is in MBR.
    My case is different.
The Disk Utility says the disk is in GPT. (GUID Partition Table.)
And I used Bootcamp Assistant to partition the disk.
However, the Windows 10 Technical Preview installer thinks that it's in MBR. (yes. It's for 64bit.)
So, it looks to me that Windows installer somehow obtain the disk partition information wrongly.
Are there any people who were successful in installing Windows 10 Technical Preview?
<Fig.1> Disk Utility shows that it has GPT.
<Fig.2> windows installer thinks that it's in MBR, although it's actually in GPT.
    Is there any

Yes. It looks to be so. I've also read somewhere at MSDN site : GPT can contain MBR.
However, still it looks to me that its either/both Apple and MS implementation issue.Disk Utility says it's in GPT, but Windows installer doesn't think so.
I also tried DISKPART on windows to see if what partition type it thought, but it didn't give me such information.
What is even more interesting was VirtualBox. I decided to install on VirtualBox, and if "Enable EFI" option is on, the x64 version of Win 10 TP version couldn't be installed. I had to turn it off. So, according to MS, Win 10 for x64 is GPT-only. (I read so.. maybe I'm wrong.) but the "Enable EFI" mode should be turned off. Anyway, I decided to install on VM although it's slow for now.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts.

  • BootCamp Installer doesn't run

Hi all, I have both a Summer 2007 MacBook Pro and an Al-iMac. When trying to install BootCamp with Windows Vista SP1 (x86) using the BC package in the Apple website (v.2.1), the installer doesn't run, just as if I haven't clicked the icon or something. It happens in both computers, and it doesn't run if I install the RC of Win7 either. It only works if I use the XP32 installer under WinXP SP3 in the iMac (in the MBP it doesn't run). I can't use the Leopard Service Disk of the iMac or the Retail copy because I lost both of them, and there's no BC in the Tiger Service Disks. Both macs use OSX 10.5.7.
Is there any way to make them run or I have to use a MSP unpacker (I have found many unpackers for the MSI format, but none compatible for MSP) to get all the drivers out of the installer? Can I install the drivers by installing the Apple Software Update and downloading the packages from there? I've tried that on Windows7 but apparently it doesn't recognize the OS's version and the BC doesn't show up.
PS: I'm not very good with English, so sorry if there's any error :P

    Hi Rorox,
the 2.0 drivers are only avaiable on the OSX Leopard DVDs.
IF you really have lost them (and not only misplaced them) you can call Apple and ask for a replacement.
Have the serial number of your Mac at hand and usually Apple will charge your with about USD 30 for the replacement.
Since the OSX DVD can also be sometimes vital for repairing errors of OSX you really should get a set.
    Regards
    Stefan

  • Yet more problems!  Now the computer recognises ipod, but itunes doesn't

I used my ipod with my old laptop, but now I want to use it on my new one.
Firstly the ipod wouldn't sync, and after literally hours of messing, itunes kept saying "error: cannot sync". I still haven't resolved that issue.
But now itunes doesn't recognise the ipod at all, despite the computer recognising it!!!!
All the help seems to be for XP, but I have vista.
Why do the same problems happen over and over and over? I hate my ipod, and wished I had never bought one.
Anyone, please help before I put a stiletto heel through it.
