Installation Snow Leopard

I have an iMac os x 10.4.11 and I bought the magic box (snow leopard, ilife 09 en iwork) and a time capsule.
The time capsule apparently, only works with mac os x 10.5 and higher.
My problem is that I wanted to back up all my files, pictures, movies and music on the time capsule before installing snow leopard. But this isn't possible.
Is there someone who can guarantee me that all the files can be saved while installing snow leopard, until I can install time capsule?

mount it as a drive?
Click here and follow the instructions.
Is there a difference between time capsule and time machine?
Time Machine is the backup software. Time Capsule is the base station and internal drive.
If I copy everything of the house icon to time capsule, does this mean that every file of my old system is backed up?
Personal data only, including everything you listed above. You need to image the whole partition with the Disk Utility or use a program such as Carbon Copy Cloner to get the entire system.

Help my MAC OS X disc doesn't allow me to restore factory settings it just installs snow leopard and remains on my original user account?

You need to erase the disk first. From the 'Utilities' menu on the Install disk choose' Disk Utility; use this to erase the disk, then install the system plus (if it's the original install disk) any bundled applications.
I'm going to state the perfectly obvious just to be on the safe side: 'Erase disk' does exactly that - everything on the disk will be gone.

  • Installation Snow Leopard on Intel machine

I want use Snow Leopard in a partition of a disk of a notebook Asus W7J Intel Mobile Dual Core 2 T7200 2000Mhz Chipset Intel i945PM,
video Nvidia GeForce Go 7400 audio Realtek ALC660 INTEL 82801 and disk SATA 160GB
but at the booting I have KERNEL PANIC ERROR and the OXS doesn't work.
    What can I do?
I have tried the -v -x -f commands but nothing works.

You get a kernel panic because Mac OS X supports only the specific hardware architecture of Apple-branded computers. This differs substantially from what PC makers use in their products.
For instance, there is no BIOS chip in any Mac. Plus, Apple makes extensive use of parts custom-built to its specifications for audio, I/O control, graphics, & other functions. While the specs for many of these parts are very similar to the off-the-shelf ones used in PC's, they are not identical. Even the CPU's Apple uses are slightly different, leveraging both Intel's expertise in CPU design & Apple's historic expertise in hardware-software integration.
IOW, Apple does not provide in Mac OS X a kernel or hardware drivers fully compatible with any computer it does not build. So, not only does trying to run OS X on non-Apple hardware violate the licensing terms for the OS, it is technically impossible to do without hacks & tweaks & carefully selected generic hardware, & even then the results are iffy at best, unlikely to approach the stability & "it just works" experience real Macs deliver.

  • Is it possible to installe Snow Leopard on the new MacBookAir 13"

I dont want to use Lion for now...

Unfortunately, you can't.  (Yes, it was on my wish list, too.)
Instead I went to the Apple Online and bought a refurbished MBA 13" (Oct. 2010) with 4gb RAM, 256gb flash storage.  It comes with the NVIDIA GeForce 320M graphics processor, which means you get better graphics than the newer model (where the graphics is shared, not dedicated, RAM).   Same number of slots; I didn't care about the Thunderbolt connector since there are very few external devices or drives or any other company that uses it .... unless you're going to spend a grand on the Aople Display.  I do wish it had the backlit keyboard, but that was something I was willing to live without in exchange for not having to live with the trainwreck called Lion.
The refurbs comes with Snow Leopard 10.6.5 installed, so there is a lot of downloading to do to bring it up-to-date, plus it is eligible for the Lion up-to-date program (use it within 30 days and save yourself $30!).

  • I upgraded to snow leopard but now I have only 1 GB of storage space?

It seems like all my files/apps are duplicated or something. I found all my old files, but do I really have to load all my music back in to itunes? Same thing with my photos, I have them all but they aren't showing up into iphoto.

How did you do the upgrade?
If you just installed Snow Leopard, it deletes the previous version of OSX, and installs Snow Leopard, without disturbing anything else.
If that's not what you did, please explain just what you did.

  • More problems with Snow Leopard - won't restart

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard, my Pro Mac has been acting like a Windows PC - problem after problem after problem.
The latest problem is the "Restart" function. If I want to restart my computer (or even if another program has to restart the computer), the system freezes. Example: I go to the Apple icon, click "Restart" and the computer goes into the blue screen with the whirling gray wheel (as if it's going to actually restart). But that's all that happens. If I leave it alone, it will sit like that for hours. It NEVER restarts. If I shut it down, I can turn the computer back on with no problem, but the "restart" function only serves to lock everything up.
Anyone have any suggestions on fixing this? Not a workaround or a band-aid... a real fix.

Usually when I run up against a problem it has a known solution - if I start up the computer and see a flashing system folder I'm going to look at the hard drive. But sometimes the problem is less obvious - like yours. I'd start by unplugging everything but the keyboard, mouse and display and boot into a new user account as I've said before. I'll run hardware and disk diagnostics and if everything checks out I'll move to the new user account for an extended test.
At this point I've learned that you've installed 10.6 more than once and that you've apparently created a new user account at least once and had that appear to at least temporarily solve your problem. What I don't know is whether you've performed the hardware test yet and if you've run the disk utility application on all three drives. Also, while it seems that you have reinstall the OS you haven't indicated how. This info would be helpful.
As to your question about a 'bad installation': Snow Leopard by default performs an upgrade which installs the new OS and deletes the old OS. Incompatible applications are supposed to be moved into a folder marked incompatible. For whatever reason every once in a while things go awry and when I've run into this issue I've attempted a reinstall using the upgrade method first. This has worked often enough that I continue to do so and recommend it. When it doesn't work I erase the drive, reinstall the OS and then use the migration assistant and again, this is my typical recommendation. Only once have I run into a situation where the problem persisted and when I did another erase and install and then manually installed the user's software and manually moved her documents etc the problem didn't reappear. I concluded there must have been some incompatible program that the installer didn't catch.

  • A few questions about Snow Leopard before purchase

it was first a french post that I translate:
salut, quelques questions avant mon achat éventuel de Snow:
Hi, a few questions before I purchase Snow Leopard:
    1) le update est-il multilingue. c.à.d a-t-on aussi le choix de la langue comme pour pour la version complète?
Is the upgrade also multilanguages as for the complete version?
    2) suffit-il de lancer l'installation de la mise à jour si on a déjà Leopard installé?
Need I only to install the upgrade version when Leopard is already installed?
    3) les programmes tels que Pages, Photoshop cs3, etc... fonctionnent-ils sans problème sous Snow? Do old programs from Leopard run normally, are they all compatible such Photoshop cs3, etc...?
    4) est-ce plus fiable de désinstaller Leopard et d'installer Snow Leopard complètement?
Is it more reliable to desinstall first old version of Leopard and then install Snow Leopard?
    Who knows?

There are mixed reports saying some things work fine in CS3, while others do not.
Pages '09 certainly works, since it is available as part of the Mac Box Set with Snow Leopard. Earlier versions of Pages remains to be seen.
You shouldn't have to uninstall Leopard. The specs call for the lowest priced version of Snow Leopard to simply install on top of Leopard.
However, you should make sure to follow the tips on this FAQ*:

I have a 2008 iMac 21.5" using 10.6.8 Snow Leopard with VM Ware 4.1.3 supporting Windows 7. Initially ML OSX refused to install due to Back up on HD which I removed to trash. It then proceeded but froze up in the initial stages with 33 mins remaining. I was lucky enough to quit and restart using 10.6.8. With all the problems on this chat line, it appears it may be best to leave Mountain Lion well alone, and cut losses rather than tempt fate.Has anybody anything positive to say or help with?

    1. Open Disk Utility and repair permissions
    2. Open Finder, go to your user's folder > Library > Caches and delete everything
    3. Verify disk
    4. See if your apps are compatible with OS X 10.8 > http://www.roaringapps.com

  • Problem installating Snow Leopard on old Macbook Pro with Intel Core 2 Duo. After creating partition on internal hard disk (Extended Journaled), installation starts but stops at half of the progress bar. Screen asking Restart appears.

    Hello:
I have tried installing Snow Leopard via the installation disc on a Macbook Pro (2007) with an Intel Core 2 Duo, but I the installation has failed more than 5 times.
I have first formatted and partitioned the internal hard disk with Mac Os Extended Journal format.
Once the installation starts, it starts without a problem unti lthe progress bar gest until half completed then a screen asking for a Computer Restart shows up.
It asks to press the power button for some time until it the computer shuts down and then, press again to turn it on.
Once turned on, the installation disc gets readed, the installation screen appears again and asks again to start the whole installation process form the beginning.

Then you have a Hardware Problem.
Your system is Crashing part way through the install and Re-Booting because of the crash.
Could be the drive itself or it could be some other hardware part in your system. Like the RAM.
To check if it is the internal drive connect an External drive to the system by USB and do the install on that external. If the install completes then it more then likely the drive is bad. If it crashes again then it is more then likely some other piece of hardware in your system.

  • Imposible continue the installation of Snow leopard 10.6 on a 1TB external hard disk, what can I do?

Imposible continue with the installation of Snow leopard 10.6 on a 1TB external hard disk. I did the same last year and I continued working but suddenly appeared the simbol with a folder and a question mark and I know this is a problem so I click in the format option to the hard disk and when I tried to install again Snow Leopard, 'cause I want to recover my backups with Time Machine, I couldn't continue because the installation didn't respond to the click in the Utilities option or to next step > continue . Please, What can I do? I'll wait for your answers. Thank you so much in advance.

    Hello Melophage,
It is the original hard drive which should have been erased by the previous owner. The problem is, I cannot access it without any OS installed. Or maybe there is a bootable USB or DVD that can do it ?
Just an indication: when I boot without CD inserted in it, it shows a grey folder icon with a questionmark like this one:
    Thank you for your help
PS: Yes, I am interested by the replacement pair of grey installation DVDs for my model. Where can I purchase this ?

  • Snow Leopard Installer doesn't detect my hard drive?! help!

After my earlier post, where my replacement 320gig hard drive is incorrectly (not GUID) partitioned, I backed everything up, made a time machine copy just to be safe, and set about formatting the entire drive, doing a fresh install, and then updating via one of my back ups etc.
However, when I tried restarting from the CDRom, it just hung on the Apple grey splash screen for about 10 minutes with nothing happening, I restarted and held one 'ALT' the two options were my hard drive and the Snow Leopard install disk - I selected the install disk and after short while I was presented with the installer.
The installer displayed no hard drive, nor did the disk utility within' the installer, I can't think what the problem could be, as, as soon as I ejected the installer cd, I booted straight back into my normal system (which I am writing this on now).
I really am stumped as what to do next, comments, suggestions and observations welcome :-D
    Andy (D-F3ens)

I tried that and the both disk's pass the verification, the problem is the installer detecting my hard drive.
When i'm running 10.5 and try to install from the SL Disk it picks up the hard drive (but says it cannot install to this volume, use disk utility etc) - its when I restart and enter the installer via the splash menu, it fails to pick up my hard drive.
I cant see any other way of partitioning my drive to the required GUID, even when I made a seperate 20gig partition, it remains as Mac OSX Journaled on the same drive thats partition scheme is 'Apple Partition Map'.
Bootcamp will not help me either, I thought of creating a seperate partition and installing it to that, then reformatting the rest of the drive from within' SL, but Bootcamp says that it cannot modify the 'startup disk' and says it requires reformatting.
I really am stumped as to what to do next, I can't understand why the installer picks up the hard drive whilst its running, but when its in the installer it doesn't
    Help!!!!

  • Installation Options for iMovie HD on Snow Leopard system with iLife '09

Greetings and thank-you for contributing suggestions on what is a well worn subject. I have read many of the posts existing on this topic and am trying to nip some details.
I have a late 2006 iMac that came with Tiger and iMovie HD which is now at version 6.0.3. When I upgraded to Snow Leopard (Boxed Set) I got iLife 09 but, as it was supposed to do, it left me iMovie HD which is what I have used. I have both sets of installation DVD's. (from the iMac and the SL upgrade)
Today I got a new MacMini and am plotting how to get iMovie HD on it.
I gather that I first need to remove iMovie 09 from the Mini. I do that by dragging its application bundle in finder to the trash and removing any receipt packages.
Do I have to remove all of the iLife 09 applications or just iMovie 09?
Then, I reinstall either all of iLife 06 from the iMac DVD or just iMovie HD. After that I can load iLife 09 from the SL DVD. That will leave the iMovie HD on the system but upgrade everything else.
Should I run software update from iMovie HD to try to get the 6.0.3 version or download and run the upgrade image? Does it matter?
I am good to go. Did I miss anything?
I also have a SuperDuper clone of the iMac system. Another possibility is to boot from that and clone it to the new Mini. Does anyone think this is a better idea?
Thanks again for the insights of your experience.

I think the issue is that if you install iMovie 06 on a system with iMovie 09 installed, iMovie 6 has no knowledge that iMovie 09 exists. Therefore iMovie 6 installs itself in the iMovie folder in the Applications Folder and assumes anything in there is old and can be trashed.
Apple fixed this with iMovie 6.04, but this is no longer available.
But if you install iMovie 6 first, and iMovie 9 second, iMovie 9 knows about iMovie 6 and will move it to a folder called "iMovie - Previous Versions".
In your case, I would uninstall iMovie 09 as you started to do, then run the migration assistant, then reinstall iMovie 09.
It should also work to create a folder on your old system called "iMovie - Previous Versions". Drag the iMovie 6 app into this folder and verify that it works. Then do the Migration Assistant. This should work, but I hesitate to recommend it because I have not tested it. Best case, it installs and you did not even have to uninstall iMovie 09. Worst case, delete the iMovie folder and reinstall iMovie 09.
For what its worth, I recently did a Migration Assistant from a SuperDuper clone (after a failed hard disk) that had both iMovie 09 and iMovie 6 installed, and it worked fine. But I have not tried your scenario.
I would use Migration Assistant because then you have the correct version of Snow Leopard for your system. You may not if you use a clone. A new machine may have microcode that is not released to the general release of OSX for several months. If your Mini is a used one and at least 6 months old, a clone should work OK.

  • How many Installs Can I do from a Snow Leopard Retail Disk?

I have an old Snow Leopard Retail Disk (10.6.3) that I used a few years ago. Our Macs have mostly been upgraded to Lion since then, but we still have a 2007 iMac running Leopard and want to run some legacy third-party software. We need to upgrade that iMac from Leopard to Snow Leopard, then upgrade via system update to 10.6.8 in order to run the legacy software.
I know we used this Snow Leopard retail disk to upgrade one computer to Snow Leopard already, and we might have used the disk to install Snow Leopard on an external hard drive as well but I'm not sure as it was a few years ago and that hard drive may have been archived and placed in storage.
My question is, is there a limited number of installs that we can do with this disk? Do we need to first uninstall Snow Leopard from one computer before we can install it on another?

Unlike Windows, the DVD or CD versions of the Mac OS (Snow Leopard or earlier) have no serial number, or even keep track of how many times you've installed it. It's all on the honor system of following the license you have, which as mende1 noted, is either a single computer license, or five in one household (not shared with friends or relatives).
Lion and Mountain Lion are a bit different. Macs that came with either OS have a machine specific version (for the necessary hardware drivers) and cannot be shared, other than with a 100% identical Mac. The App Store versions are intended for Macs that were released before the respective OS's, and contain only the hardware drivers for the Mac models they are listed to support.
