Hi /\G3nt42,
first of all: WELCOME TO THE DISCUSSIONS!
Unfortunately you do not give us any information about your system. Please fill in your computer details in "My Settings" in the right sidebar of this page. We need to now as much as possible about your system (Exact Mac type, processor type, MHz, RAM, current system version, etc.) in order to help! Whether your computer is compatible with Tiger at all depends on that information: Tiger system requirements.
Then make sure you have the retail full install version of Tiger (black DVD). You cannot use hardware specific disks that shipped with another computer (gray).
In order to upgrade from 10.1.x to 10.4.x you will have to either reformat the drive (recommended) or do an Erase&Install. You CANNOT upgrade directly. In both cases all your data will be lost!!! I suggest to reformat the drive using the OS 9 install CDs. By reformatting the drive with the OS 9 disk you are safe that all required OS 9 hardware drivers will be installed properly. Make sure you format as Apple Extended (HFS+)!
Update OS 9 to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates.
Now insert the Tiger install DVD and reboot while holding down the c-key. Install Tiger. After the reboot Repair permissions!
Download and apply the Mac OS X Update 10.4.7 Combo PPC.
Repair permissions again and finally run Software Update from the Apple menu to install all remaining updates (yes, you should install all at once because only the software update app knows the exact order in which they have to be installed).
Good luck!
If this answered your question please consider granting some stars: Why reward points?

  • Plugin installer won't start.

I got an applet which when loaded on systems without the version 1.5 of the pluging it will prompt the user to download the latest version. It works find in 18 out of 20 computers. The last 2 are laptops and the installer won't start and the applet won't appear.
    Anyone know why?

    Tim,
I encountered the same problem. Are you installing on a server with
a Pentium 4? If so, the problem is with the Pentium 4.
I found the workaround posted on Intel's website. Check this url:
    http://www.intel.com/support/processors/sb/9011824413236561-prd24.htm
The work around is that the Oracle installer uses a program called symcjit.dll and this program does not properly function on a Pentium 4. Here is Intel's workaround:
If you are installing into Windows* 2000, one workaround recommendation by Oracle for this problem is:
    1. Be sure that you have installed the latest Windows 2000 Service Packs.
    2. Create a temporary directory on your Intel Pentium4 processor server (e.g. \TEMP).
    3. Copy the contents of the Oracle Server CD to the temp directory created in step 2.
    4. Search the directory structure created in step 2 for the existence of the filename SYMCJIT.DLL.
    5. Rename each copy of the SYMCJIT.DLL to SYMCJIT.OLD.
    6. Run the SETUP.EXE from the \TEMP\install\win32 directory and install Oracle 8.1.x.
    I hope this helps

  • Intel iMac won't start - HELP!

My iMac won't start this morning. I get the white screen with the grey apple,
and the swirling progress thing, then after a few seconds I can hear
the sound you hear when the system shuts down. like a soft switch
going off, then it just continues swirling, still with the white
screen and grey apple, then it restarts by itself. Then we go through
the same routine. Tried booting up by holding C with the Leopard disc inside but nothing happens.I have just reinstalled Leopard as Snow Leopard left too many printers and programs lifeless, so I did an erase and install a few days ago. Since then I have used the Mac fine, switched down normally last night, but this morning it doesn't want to play.
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks in anticipation

Have you reset PRAM and SMC?
    Do this first
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1379
and then do this, if the PRAM does not help
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1543
The second one is basically disconnecting your iMac from power (and all cables), then reconnecting following a precise procedure.
If that does not help, I would restart with the Snow Leopard installation disc (insert disc and start up with the C key held down). You probably did an installation of Snow Leopard over your existing Leopard system the first time. This time, erase it completely first, then install Snow Leopard. I assume you backed up your data already.
When you get to the Installer screen (after selecting language), go up to the menu bar. Under Utilities, select to run Disk Utility. In the sidebar, select the internal DRIVE, not the volume indented under the drive. Go to the Erase tab. Name the volume +Macintosh HD+ and set the format to +Mac OS Extended (Journaled)+. Erase the drive. Since you have the drive selected in the sidebar (not the volume), it will also re-partition the drive.
It should take less than on minute to complete the process. Quit Disk Utility to go back to Installer. Run the standard installation onto the blank internal drive. Hopefully, a fresh Snow Leopard install on a reformatted/re-partitioned drive will work better for you.

  • EMac won't start, help please

I am having two problems with my eMac. The first, much more pressing, problem is that it won't start. I was having problems installing the newest version of quicktime, so on the quicktime forums I read to Repair Permissions in the Disk Utility, so I did this, and everything seemed to go well, but when I restarted my computer, it would not load. It is stuck on a light grey screen with a dark grey apple logo in the middle. My keyboard won't repond to the point where i can't even open the disk drive. My second, much less urgent problem is that my disk drive doesn't recoginize any cd's, even ones that I have used with this computer before. this problem really means nothing at this point, since my computer won't start anyways.
If anyone could help me, it would be greatly appreciated.

Yes, I tied all of the suggestions for my problem.
You see a blank, gray screen
    1. Make sure the latest firmware for your computer is installed. Check Apple Downloads for the latest versions. (Yes, it is installed)
    2. Disconnect all peripheral devices, except for the Apple keyboard and mouse. This includes ADB, serial, USB, FireWire, SCSI, and PCMCIA devices. If this resolves the issue, connect one device at a time, restarting after each one, until you've determined which device is causing the issue. (All are disconnected)
    3. Remove third-party hardware upgrades such as memory (RAM), microprocessor upgrade cards, and PCI cards. If this resolves the issue, add back one item at a time, restarting after each one, to isolate the issue. Note: Apple does not provide technical support for Mac OS X when used with third-party microprocessor upgrade cards. (Don't even have any third-party hardware upgrades)
    4. Start up from your Mac OS X installation disc and check the hard disk with Disk Utility or, if necessary, fsck. (CD-drive will not even open, so can't do this)
    5. If you are comfortable doing so, reset your computer's Power Management Unit. Specific directions are available elsewhere in the Knowledge Base. (Can't find how to do this on the anywhere)
    6. Additional tips may be available in this document. (Document also had nothing that worker)
I will be buying a macbook regardless after my income tax comes in, so I don't deem the computer as worthy of spending any money to fix, but this was a pretty expensive machine to just discard, so I would like to try to get it running again.

  • Brand new imac won't start HELP!!

Just got an iMac, fresh out of the box I hit the power button, everything looks normal, OS X does its normal checks, then the desktop comes up with multicolour stripes - the desktop is cluttered with all kinds of files - a darwin console opens up then an application called Phoenix starts does a few things that were too quick and then just says PAUSED in an orange box at the top and nothing else.
I have a bluetooth mouse and keyboard so I can't actually control the thing in any way either.
It also looks like OS X 10.5 has not been pre-installed.
Please can someone help me with a suggestions as to what I can do.
(I am an experienced Mac User having used them since the original SE - I've never experienced something like this before)
    Thanks

it sounds like the iBook went to sleep during the transfer or at least it's hard drive spun down.
what you need to know is hope that simply booting from your install DVD will let you repair the iMac's hard drive. You could also try booting holding down the Command S keys on startup and when you get to the Single User Mode command line prompt follow the directions there for running fsck to repair your hard drive.
Do you have a FW hard drive? Can you copy files from iBook to FW and then from there to iMac?
And, it is always nice to have a FW emergency/backup hard drive. The iMac needs a different partition scheme to be bootable from FW than the iBook does, but you can create the proper partition type etc from a Tiger Installer and put OS X on FireWire, then see if you can backup and repair your iMac's hard drive.
MicroMat's TechTool Pro 4.5.1 is now shipping and is compatible, Universal Binary and bootable. Always good to have some 3rd party utility handy.
If you are just starting out, you probably don't have much if anything installed yet, so you may want to just erase your iMac drive and restore to what it was. That would be the easiest if Disk Utility won't repair it.
Instead of powering off the iBook, I would have tried to force quit whatever was running, like Migration Assistant.

  • I book won't start- help requested ASAP

I have had my Ibook for about 3 years now. Today I was burning a disk in the Itunes applicatoin as well as searching the internet. When the disk had 2 tracks to burn left, my computer shut down. Since then, I have been unable to restart it. I have tried to press the power( ON) button many times, but it will not restart. The 7th and 8th time I tried to restart it, it made a slight clicking noise. What can I do? I need to use my computer ASAP for homework and debate work. Please help.

  • MACBOOK WON'T START HELP HELP OMG HELP!!/1/1kghl

SO! I recently bought a white MacBook and an iPod Nano (gen1 because I wanted them to match). Since then I have had to send in the first iPod, get a second one, and have the exact same problem--neither the MacBook nor the iPod seem to realise at all when they are plugged in. No charging, no syncing with iTunes. Nothing.
So the customer service bloke told me that I should update OS X. Alright, I toddle on off to Barnes and Noble to take advantage of the Wifi, as I live in the middle of no where and am still on dial-up. Update, update, restart time. I'm supposed to hold down the power button while it restarts.
Familiar with having to hold down keys while things happen, as I've used Windows all my life, I do. Except, apparently my button-pressing skills are TOO well-honed, because it begins loading and then turns off! Oh no! I may have held that button down a bit too long...
Easily solved, right? Just boot it up again.
Except it won't turn on! Well the little flashy LED light goes all flashy, and the thing sort of growls at me like it's in pain. The screen stays black, nothing else happens. I hold down a lot of buttons and still nothing happens. I've been trying turning it on while holding down different buttons, but still nothing. Honestly, I don't handle panic very well.
So, basically. I am totally freaking out. HELP HELP HELP PLEASE HELP.
    Please pretty please?
X-POSTED FROM INSTALLATION & WHATNOT FORUMS BECAUSE I AM TOTALLY FRANTIC. Sorry!

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
First off, please don't crosspost your question unless instructed to, as it only wastes bandwidth and makes it harder to track who is asking what question.
Second, sleep it off a night, with your machine unplugged and no battery inserted to get rid of your franticness. It never really pays to be frantic in front of a computer because you don't know what you are doing, and you could be your own worst enemy.
When you are ready, depress the power button only for 2 seconds and let go.
If that doesn't work reset the power manager:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303319
Also try zapping the PRAM if that doesn't work:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238
If neither works, are you getting anything on the screen?

  • Desktop Software installation won't start

I downloaded version 4.7 Desktop Software w/o media manager for XP SP3.  When I run it, it extracts the file, and the installshield starts up in the lower-right corner of the screen.  When it gets to 100%, it disappears... and then nothing else happens.  No installation screen comes up.  There aren't even any processes running related to the installation.
I also tried opening the self-extracting executable in Winzip and manually extracting it to a separate folder.  I ran "BlackBerrySetup.exe", and exactly the same thing happened.
I tried downloading the Desktop Manager software from Verizon, as well, with the exact same results. (I'm not sure which variation of v4.7 this was, but it was over 300 MB.)
Anyone have any idea of what's going on here?  Thanks for your help!
EDIT: I tried disabling McAfee VirusScan, too, to see if that was conflicting, but it didn't make any difference.

I've got the exact same problem... :'(  I had to flash my phone, and subsequently got an upgrade I'd been longing for... to 6.0. When I upgraded my desktop software to match my new phone upgrade, the software on my laptop JUST WOULDNT start!! The screen stays white. I've tried reinstalling from - the internet, and from -the cd, but it stays the same.    I decided to try a different approach, and connected the phone to my laptop, and now I cannot find my BBMessenger app, or my APPWorld button.    If I could find AppWorld, I'd probably just re-download BBM, but now they're both gone!   ...What do I do? Go back to version 5 on both counts? Does that imply I'd have to flash my phone again?  Just so *frustrated!!

  • Adobe Flash 16 Installation Won't Start at All

I am unable to install Adobe Flash onto a Win 7 computer, 64 bit.  I downloaded install_flashplayer16x32_mssd_aaa_aih.exe and tried to execute it.  It is listed in the Task Manager; but, nothing happens.  It does not even begin to run the installation wizard.  I tried to install it in Safe Mode.  I ran it as administrator.  I ran it without any browsers running.  I got the same result in every case.  It just shows in Task Manager and nothing else happens.
I installed and ran the latest version of MicrosoftFixit.  I ran it a few times, selecting the option for trouble with installing a program in some cases and uninstalling a program in other cases.  In every case, the list of programs found does not include Adobe Flash, Shockwave Flash, or Flash.
Between Fixit and Adobe's tool to detect if the program is installed, neither provided evidence that it was already installed; so, it doesn't appear to be an issue with remnants of a previously installed version that didn't get uninstalled correctly.
The file name suggests this is for a 32 bit version of the program.  Should a 64 bit version of the program have been downloaded?  I didn't have an option to select a 32 vs 64 bit program.  The web site indicated that it knew the computer is running a 64 bit version of Windows 7; but, the install button still downloaded this file.
Any assistance you can provide will be appreciated.

Same issue here. Got pop up alert that needed to update Flash which had been fine. Tried both run/automatic install in IE11 and downloaded the same offline file as you. The installer window pops up but nothing ever starts. Was able to install successfully on 4 other computers all running Win7 Ultimate and no difference with this one. Been following other leads and have deleted all old Adobe flash and Macromedia files/folders and pretty much scrubbed all evidence that flash was not on here, Have run Malware, Spyware and AV software so the system is all clean, and this is still all I get.
Task manager does show it there also, but after it gets to this far, it does not process anymore
When I get tired of waiting on it, since it won't close by the red "X", I have to end it via Task Manager, and then it takes me to a non-existent web page { http://www.{completionpageurl}.com/?exitcode=-1 }.
Flash has been working great on this PC a couple years and updated regularly, so have no clue to issue now.

  • Corrupted 10g - Universal Installer won't Start - what do I do now?

    Its a sorry tale!
Installed 10g - no problems, went fine.
Developed OCCI app against 10g. Set up test DB eventually getting some good results!
Realize I need 9i compatibility. Installed 9i client.
BIG MISTAKE - I think I installed in same home as 10g.
Now nothing works! Have even tried recovering PC to earlier checkpoint. Oracle still wont start.
Not even the UI will start!
What I would like to do is a COMPLETE and clean removal of 10g and start again!
I would be very grateful for any advice.
    Many thanks.

    Success!
I did a full uninstall and followed the clean up advice.
I re-insatlled and rebuilt my DB.
My OCCI application is now back under development!
But, just out of curiosity....why does the Oracle uninstall not provide an option to clean up and remove everything?
Thanks for your help and advice.

    1) How did you remove it?
    2) What do you mean by "permissions wasn't letting me"?
    3) How did you "refresh" your Mac? Did you reinstall OS X through Erase & Install?
    4) In what way(s) is it being "dodgy"?
