Installed 10.4.6 now ipod and lacie external hard drive no longer register

Hi
thankyou in advance, I updated to 10.4.6 but now the ipod and lacie external hard drive (usb drive) are not recognized by the computer. have tried disk utility, restarting etc but no difference. The lacie is recognized by another computer so it is not faulty. Any suggestions please?

after reading this and resetting the PMU, my drive works. I'd say try it, the worst that could happen is you have to fix your time and date.

  • Lacie external hard drive no longer readable by computer

I am using a lacie tb hard drive, and ran data rescue 3 recovery software on it. Now, when I plug it in, the hard drive is not readable by the computer at all.
    Advice?
    thanks

    Hi BoyHowdyDoo,
This is an external drive that traceyx is talking about, so no need to boot from the OS DVD to run DiskUtility.
I'm a bit suspicious that the drive is actually physically failing, I'm afraid in this case, given the mention of bad blocks etc.
Tracey, I'm not sure from your comments whether you have actually already managed to get the things you want from the drive off it or not?
Running DiskUtility over it shouldn't hurt the drive, and may repair it sufficiently to get it "seen" again. I very much doubt if Drive Rescue has really done any serious damage to the drive if it was healthy beforehand, but the mention you made of bad blocks being reported is a worry, and the WD external drives unfortunately don't have a very good reputation for reliability.
If you were trying to recover the deleted files to a disk that was itself already damaged then unpredictable consequences could have occurred.
In this situation myself, assuming this is a Mac HFS(+) formatted external drive, If Disk Utility didn't fix it I would probably use Alsoft's "DiskWarrior" to try to repair it. It is capable of dealing with problems that are beyond the ability of DiskUtility . If that failed I would use DataRescue to try to recover the contents to another external.

  • LaCie external hard drive no longer readable after being connected to a PC

    Hi all,
First post here and I really worried.
I have a Lacie external drive which I normally connect to my Mac - no problems.
Tried to connect it to my Windows 7 pc to transfer some files and it wasn't recognised. It installs the drivers and says its ready to use, but doesn't appear as a drive. So I read about it and the advice was to go to Computer Management - Disk Managment and mark drive 1 / partition as active and then assign a drive letter. So I did that and then Windows tells me that I must format the drive to use it.
Obviously I don't want to as I can't loose my data - my wedding pictures are on the drive!
So I've plugged the Lacie back into my mac, and the drive is unusable and says I need to format too. Even the repair function doesn't work.
Now I've read the another post and downloaded Test Disk (I'm working off my mac though as I know the drive worked and all my files where added from the Mac).
Its currently Anaylsing the cylinder but its taking a long time. 24hours and still on 30% (1TB drive, firewire)
I've read the help guide but once this stage completes, having read the next few steps, I'm lost.
Any ideas on what might have happened and what I need to do next?
I'll report back once its finished its 'deeper search' and analysing.
Or do I abort the above process and do something else?
    Please help.
    Thanks in advance,
    Nick

  • Lacie external hard drives

Hello I am writing you in the inquiry about the Shay hard drive and with Maverick operating system is there any issue with Maverick and lacie
external hard drives losing data I want to bye one of these hard drive but I want to know if there is any issues with data loss I am considering a 6 TB lacie thunderbolt external hard drive and I have read that there is some issues with especially Western Digital hard drives and Lacie hard drives possibly machine so please return with an answer if possible thank you very much

After having a lot of trouble with 3 LaCie hard drives, I switched to Apple Time Capsules - they just work straight out of the box. If you buy from the refurbished section, they are less expensive, but come with the same 1 year warranty. Right now there is a 2 TB drive for $199.

  • Now that I saved everything to my LaCie external hard drive, do I need to erase my IMAC hard drive?  My computer is still slow. :(

My computer is still slow after uninstalling Macbook pro and buying a LaCie external hard drive and saving everything to it.  I repaired disk permissions.  Am I supposed to erase original hard drive?
    Thanks!

Not yet, get a second hard drive, or a second medium to backup your data.  You never want there to be less than two copies of your data at anytime.  If for some reason one fails, you'll always want a backup.  Clone with Superduper or Carbon Copy Cloner.  Note, if you have an early 2008 Mac, it is not PPC, but rather Intel.  PPC indicates the chip is G3, G4, or G5.    You can double check this by going to Apple menu and selecting About This Mac. Once you verified your Mac, I can ask a moderator to move this thread, so you don't have to crosspost.

  • Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

Can i use my time capsule to wirelessly backup my macbook and its external hard drive, which up until now was it's time machine and storage? How?

The external drive must be connected to the Mac using either USB or FireWire
You must remove the external hard drive from the list of items that are "excluded" from backups in Time Machine Preferences.
    Here's how:
Open System Preferences (gear icon on the dock)
    Open Time Machine
    Click Options
Look for the name of the hard drive in the list of "excluded" items and click on it to highlight it
Click the -- (minus) button at the bottom of the list to remove the hard drive from the list of "excluded" items....so it will now be backed up
Strongly recommend that you do the first backup using Ethenret from your computer to the Time Capsule since the entire contents of the external drive will be copied on the first pass. Ethernet will be 3-5 faster than wireless.
Once you have the first backup done, you can use wireless for subsequent backups since they will nornally be much smaller....unless you add large files to the external drive.

  • My Lacie external hard drive has a life of its own

    Hi,
I've had my Lacie External hard drive for about 4 months and i have a recurring problem, it wont always show up in finder or on the desktop.
It shows up in disk utilities just fine, but stupidly the first time this happened i didn't know that you could right click and "open" it from disk utils, so i panicked and reformatted the hard disk, obviously losing everything inside.
Since then i have learnt from my mistakes and now when it vanishes (when i start up the computer it just randomly doesn't appear...) i just open via disk utils. But this isn't fair! It should appear EVERY time its switched on and plugged in. Thats what i paid for.
I issued a ticket with Lacie but with lots of trial and error they were able to tell me that is was more likely my imac and not the external hard drive. I am crossing my fingers hoping for help here!
Thank you for any help/advice in advance! Charlie

  • LACIE external hard drive will not mount

I had this problem with Tiger too. I have to turn the LaCie external hard drive on and off 4 or 5 times before it appears on my desktop. This shouldn't be right! Can I do something about this???

Another Lacie issue (lacie 250 d2) . Similar the others. WHen I installed leopard it asked if this was the drive to use etc and i said yes. Since then it wont work. All attempts to back up have failed. I cant reformat either. Just get beachball when ever I try anything with the disk. Only way to do anything is to remove the FW connection. Tried the drive on another G4 (tiger) and it scanned and reported "disk seems ok" but then any attempt to write to the drive or any other activity is greeted with beachball.'
Rang the distributor and was told " we are having some issues with lacie and we are losing confidence ... would you like to buy a western digital" !!!

  • Is it advised "Daisy Chain" my two LaCie external hard drives

Is it recommended to Daisy Chain my two LaCie external hard drives to my iMac?
Is there any "real" advantage to doing this?
If it is advised; how do I connect?
I am running an      iMac OS X Version 10.9.4
Processor      3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
                                   Memory         12 GB 1067 MHz DDR3
Hard Discs              LaCie d2 Quadra 2TB     FireWire 800
                                                                             FireWire 400
                                                                             eSata
                                                                             USB 2.0
    and                        LaCie d2 Quadra 3TB       USB3
                                                                             eSata
                                                                             2x FireWire 800
                                                                             USB 2.0

The only advantage is to free up a port on the compute.
In your case the two drives only have Firewire 800 and eSATA in common. You don't have an eSATA port on your iMac so you could only daisy-chain via Firewire. If you did that then the drive that supports USB3 would run at a slower speed. The way you have it set up now one of them is able to operate at the very fast USB 3.0 speed. On the other hand if neither of these drives needs to run particularly fast then if you daisy-chain them via Firewire 800 that would free up the USB 3.0 port should you need it.

  • My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive

    Hello,
I need you help with this one. My MacBook Pro no longer "sees" my LACie external hard drive. In the System Profiler (under FireWire) the drive is listed as:
    FireWire Bus:
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Unknown Device:
    Manufacturer: Unknown
    Model: Unknown
Maximum Speed: Up to 800 Mb/sec
    Connection Speed: Unknown
Can anyone help me to correct this issue? Thank you in advance for your help!!
    Nat

I was finally able to resolve this issue. I went to LaCie's site and went to the support area to find troubleshooting steps for my particular drive. It turns out that the problem was corrected when I swapped the power supply cord of the "troubled" drive with another LaCie drive that I have and that seemed to resolve the problem. Thank you Tony for your help. I appreciate you guys!
    Thanks,
    Nat

  • Can I set Time Machine to backup both my hard drive and an external hard drive?

Hi. I've been working with a lot of family video lately and my internal hard drive has filled up significantly. iMovie doesn't seem to have a good archiving facility like Adobe InDesign which I use at work were all the relevant files are gathered together into one folder. Apple advised me to relocate my movie files to an external hard drive and herein lies my query.
Is there a way for me to set Time Machine to backup both my iMac's internal drive and the external hard drive that would contain my movie files? I've been using Time Machine for my backups for a few years now, but backing up the external as well has me stumped. If Time Machine could be used then all the necessary file accociations etc would be safely backed up as well - that's why I don't want to have to manually backup the external.
    Anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

Thanks so much Pondini!!  You just quickly answered a question that none of the Mac people in 3 stores or Apple Care have been able to answer. If you can format it HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
I'm not too surprised about the Apple Stores, as they don't get much training on Time Machine.  But AppleCare sure ought to know.
Oh...what about if the external drive is an array...like a Drobo with it's own proprietary formatting...I guess that would not work...??
I've never used a Drobo.  A number of folks here have used them as their Time Machine drives, but I don't recall seeing anyone try to back one up with TM, so can't say for sure.  But if you can format it as HFS+ (any variation of Mac OS Extended), it will work.  If not, it won't.
At least part of the reason is, Time Machine uses the File System Event Store, a hidden log of changes that OSX keeps on each Mac-formatted disk/partition, to figure out what's changed and needs to be backed-up.  See How Time Machine works its Magic for details.
See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #32 for details and considerations of backing-up multiple volumes with Time Machine.
However, even if it will work, that may not be your best strategy, depending on your circumstances:
Since Time Machine keeps copies of things you've changed or deleted, the destination needs to be considerably larger than the data being backed-up.  How much larger varies widely depending on how you use your Mac, but a general "rule of thumb" is, it needs at least twice the space to be able to keep a reasonable "depth" of backups for you.
If you have a large internal HD, fairly full, plus a large external HD, and the files on the external don't change frequently, you might want to use Time Machine for the internal, and a different app to a different disk or partition, on a different schedule, for the external.  Especially if space is a consideration, you might not need to keep previous versions of files on the externals.  See Time Machine - Frequently Asked Question #27 for some alternatives.

Does anyone use a LaCie external hard drive with their Mac using imovie '09?  I have some questions.

Are you actually having a problem with the new Lacie drive, or are you just asking is the Lacie drive somehow different from your old G-Drive?
From a connection standpoint, most Lacie desktop drives have both USB and FireWire connections, just like the G-Drives do.  You would connect and use it the same as a G-Drive.
Regarding capturing to the external HD, if you are using a camcorder that has FireWire (iLink) connection, it is not advisable to have an external FireWire HD connected to your Mac at the same time as your camcorder; there are often communication conflicts between the camcorder and the hard drive if they are connected at the same time.  The conflicts usually appear as either dropped frames or a complete freeze.   This is more common with Canon miniDV camcorders but I have also seen this behavior with Sony miniDV camcorders.  (The problem is the camcorder's FW implementation, not the hard drive.)  The workaround is to capture to your Mac's internal HD and later copy the captured video to your external HD.

  • LaCie external hard drive keeps losing connection to Windows 8.1 computer

    Hello all,
My LaCie external hard drive (Rugged version) seems like it keeps losing connection to my brand new Windows 8.1 laptop. The laptop is an HP Pavillion 15-p 133cl TouchSmart Notebook which I just got today. Basically, every few minutes, or if I nudge the external
a bit, the computer will seem like it disconnected and reconnected to the external hard drive in a split second and bring it up in the Windows Explorer. This external hard drive doesn't show any problems connecting to any other computer, but it has occurred
with 2/3 ports on this computer so far. I'm a bit worried, because I definitely DO NOT want the files on this external to get corrupted in any way. What should I do? Thanks a bunch.

may I know your external HDD model, to check which USB version to isolate power and cable connection issue
if this is USB 3.0 try to attached at USB 3.0 at your laptop, your laptop has 2 USB 3.0 and 1 for 2.0, for external HDD with USB 2.0 sometimes need more power / more than 1 connection, sometimes the power will loose
but since the trigger it will disconnect if you nudge the HDD, I suggest back up data to your laptop first, try to change with other data or power cable, try also update your laptop chipset
try to check with other device to isolate port issue
may I know if you are using other PC, did your external HDD also will disconnect if you nudge it?
contact your external HDD manufactured to get some suggestion

I've been using a LaCie external hard drive for my Time Machine backups and it's been working fine until a couple of weeks ago. Mavericks no longer recognizes the drive. I tested the drive out on a non-Mavericks Macbook and it booted up fine. I see there are issues with this, but wondering if anyone has a work around or if you've found there is a fix I can do? Really frustrating to not be able to access my archives or be able to back up my work!
