Installed 10.5.5 - Airport Card is gone

To preface this post, I just got my laptop back from the Apple Store concerning another issue with my aiport card. I assumed it was fixed and apparently I was wrong. I turned it on today and everything worked beautifully until I installed 10.5.5. Everything seemed to work for about twenty minutes until my connection dropped out. I restarted my computer and it was as if my airport card had been removed. I restarted again thinking it was a glitch and still nothing. I called AppleCare and apparently people have been having some issues with 10.5.5 (at least I think that's what the girl said). So I have to take my laptop to the apple store yet again and have them give me a new Airport card ... again. I was wondering if anybody else had this particular issue and if they are as infuriated as I am.

Not really enough info to help - what are you connecting to wirelessly for instance.
First thing to do is Apple Menu/About this Mac/More Info/Network/AirPort Card. Does it show the details in the RH pane. Does it show the 'Current Wireless Network'.
If the AirPort Card is showing OK, then go to System Preferences/Network/AirPort and reselect your network, click 'Accept'. Does it work now.
Try repair permissions using Disk Utility.
Hope this helps.

  • How to install the driver for Airport card in a mini

In a post regarding trouble with wireless connections some suggested...
    cd /System/Library/Extensions
    mv IO80211Family.kext IO8021Family.1066
well I did it and now my system is telling me there is no Airport card installed. How can I reload just the Airport drivers? I have my 10.6.3 OS X disk. Can I do it with that?
I tried running Disk Permissions with no change. I have since renamed the file back to what it was. The I started getting pop ups telling me the kernel file was improperly installed.
I just don't want to reinstall my complete OS.

I've already put it back to the original file name of IO80211Family.kext. I've run disk permissions too, in fact I've run it several times.
It keeps repairing a bunch of java stuff but that's all.
I've set the permission on the file to what I believe they were before I ran the mv command.
It was after I restored the file name, that I got the popup saying it was installed incorrectly, but, it's not saying it now.
And I have rebooted too, still no Airport.
Oh, I never replaced anything with earlier version, I just renamed and renamed back.

  • Installed 10.4.6, airport card is now dead. PLEASE HELP!

I installed 10.4.6, my airport card worked great before this. Now it's totally dead, won't power on and doesn't work. The card is only a few months old and worked great before I installed 10.4.6. I have tried taking the card out and reinserting it, restarting the computer, restarting the router, restarting the airport extreme base station, playing around with the network settings, you name it I have tried it. Can someone please give me some help???
    400mghz Powerbook G4 Titanium Mac OS X (10.4.6) 100gb hd, 768mb RAM

    it's actually a Macsense AEROcard extreme WPE-800.
It's this one you're talking about, isn't it? Do they use any custom drivers or is it plug+play?
And I don't have another laptop to test it on. I have contacted Macsense and the only response I got from them was one asking me what kind of computer I am using the card on.
What kind of response was that? They make Mac products, you've been using the card fine, it now seems dead and the only feedback you got from them was that?
BTW: wireless cards run hot and it's not unusual to get fried (or fry the PCMCIA slot they plug in), the best way to verify if the card's dead or not is to take your card to a friend's Mac (or try your local Apple Store) and test it (see if it powers on).
Again, if the card is dead (and when hardware fails) 10.4.6 (and any OS) has nothing to do with it

  • Airport Card / Connection gone

About two weeks ago, both my Powerbook and girlfriend's iBook lost Airport ability. There was no connection to the Airport Express base station, even though the AE had the normal green light.
Clicking the Airport icon in the top menu bar gave the endless spinning beach ball and froze the Powerbook. Same for the iBook. (Note: In 3 1/2 years my PB has frozen maybe three times.) I have hard-shut-down the PB 30-40 times last weekend trying to resolve this Airport issue.
I have reconfigured the AXBS and now just ethernet straight to the PB for the internet. I can't believe it would be a hardware issue - either BOTH cards dying at the same time. The only thing I can imagine is that there was some sort of update that did them both in, but I can't remember what it could be.
We erased the drive and reinstalled Jaguar, then Panther to the iBook but the Airport issue persists there. I can't mess with the PB because I have too much work to do.
Please help. And, Henry B., you and I have discussed a bit of this before and you were a help, but I'm trying here again.
    Cheers,
    Jason

Please see my post. This is an option that may help. Here it is copied and pasted
To any of those that are having issues with your airport after the update here is a possible solution. Open the Hard Drive (from Finder) Then open "Preferences" then scroll to "SystemConfiguration" drag it to the desktop, and then restart. After that, Open up "System Preferences" from the apple menu. Go to "Network", you then need to make a new location. You can title it anything that you would like to. Hit "Apply Now". Your airport should be up and running, you may need to restart. You can now delete the "SystemConfiguration" folder that you dragged to your desktop, as OSX has now made a new one.
The reason that you need to do this, is that somehow, the "SystemConfiguration" folder and files became corrupt and something in the X.4.3 causes them to be noticed, thus your airport fails to work. Hope it helps some of you.

  • Do Airport Cards "Die"?

Do airport cards die, croak, kick the bucket after a few years?
My iMac has had the same card for four years.
The iMac detects the card, and the card gets signal from the base station when it boots up.
But five minutes after the computer boots, the connection between the card and the base station fizzles, quits, dies, poof-out.
The iMac still detects the card, but no send/receive is going on.
Could it be that my Airport card has gone to Airport card heaven???

I had thought that the Airport card in my iMac G4 had died. When I had an old base station, I had upgraded to some system update of some kind - that's when the signal began dropping off first on the dark side pc with it's Dell TrueMobile, then on the iBook G3 then finally the iMac started to have problems. I went and bought a Extreme base & new DSL. For a few weeks A-OK. Just did software updates on the iMac (the last being a security update). The signal began going on and off with increasing degredation and loss time. I tried all the standard recommendations (as I did the 1st time with the old base) - still it got worse. I turned on the old base & moved it closer to the iMac & saw signal - so I ethernet'd the old base Wan to the Extreme LAN, & old base LAN to the dark side pc. AAll 3 were happy as a clam for one night -then the signal died on the iMac. For days I tried all kinds of things, checking with iStumbler - Nada - I was sure that it had died. I posted a question about getting USB wireless for the Mac. Duane suggested that I check out Ethenet wireless adapters (he seems to be an excellent poster interested in helping people and solving their problems - Frank does too). I was about to call and order one. I thought that I would LAN out from the old Base to the iMac. Before I did, I knew that the dark side pc would have no connection, so I re-installed the driver (actually the other day I had nuked & rebuilt the dark side pc). Suddeny, for the 1st time in over two years, the Dell TrueMobile maintained a consistent signal. Then i plugged the ethernet cable from the old base LAN to the iMac. Tried to get a web site, then remembered that I needed to go to the System Preferences and include Ethernet in the Network preferences - I onlly had Airport check & at the top of the list. Suddenly I had an airport signal & connected to a site. My son said it was the ethernet, so I unplugged the ethernet. It still worked. Now with iStumbler on the iMac I see both bases, the old and the Extreme - I had seen nothing for days - now I cocnsistenetly see signals maintained at levels that I never experienced over the last two years. All three, iMac, iBook, dark side pc (& an XBox) are all super good & have been for over a day.
I said all this to show how bizare this all seems, but to encourage you not to too quickly give up hope - the Airport card may not be dead after all! If, after you try the various recommendations or the suggested permutations & combinations, and still cannot get a signal - try to get the card checked if you can (Apple store, etc.) Otherwise, consider Duane's advice about wireless ethernet adapters (rather than a USB solution).
I know that I did NOT answer your question - I could be wrong, but I think that in the end, only Apple will be able to really answer the question - but until then, do not give up hope and please consider following the suggestions on some of the super-posters (not said in a derogatory way, but to establish their credibilty), even if some suggestions may seem too obvious, etc.

  • Regular Airport card - fit in iMac DV SE 400?

    Hello there,
I'm trying to install an 802.b AirPort card on my iMac DV SE 400 but it does't seem to fit. The antena cable in the iMac inserts properly in the card but the plastic slot where the card in supposed to go is too wide. Also, there's no male connector in the iMac to connect the card to. The AirPort card fits and works properly in both, my G4 MDD and my 867 PB. I thought this card was supposed to work in my iMac. Am I missing something?
Thanks a lot for any help you may provide.
    Jacobo

Yes that card fits but you also need the adapter. More information can be found in Duane, "iMac CRT: I want to make my iMac wireless...", 01:51pm Jan 31, 2005 CDT.

  • Can't Physically find Airport Card

    Hello-
I have tried to check the installation of my airport card to make sure there is a snug connection to the antenna wire. When I open the iMac, I do not see the airport card where it should be!
I have downloaded the pdf for installing or repairing the airport card in my G5 20" 2 GHZ, and of course I can see in the photo where it should be.
I do have airport reception, although the signal strength is low, and I've tried all the software and modem fixes I know. The DSL connection has been confirmed ok and up to speed.
I feel stupid because I have an airport card, but can't find it inside my mac.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you.

If you have an the Ambient Light Sensor iMac G5, it does not have an AirPort Extreme card. Those iMac G5s have built in wireless.

  • Airport Card not connecting to existing network

New to wireless and to these forums, although i have found them useful in the past this is my first posting.
I have just installed a new airport extreme card into my imac, prior to this i installed the software.
the airport card seems fine, the mac recognises it, it does not however see the wireless router. (netgear dg834pn). The router is configured ok as my laptop (Macbook Pro) and my wifes laptop (dell pc) work fine with it.
how do i make the imac see the network?
    any help would be appreciated.

ukdave, Welcome to the discussion area!
Verify that the antenna wire is properly connected to the AirPort Extreme card. Compare you installation to the photos in KB 108039, Properly attaching the antenna on an AirPort Extreme Card.
Also... is there any chance that you have installed an AirPort Extreme card from the US? The US cards only recognize channels 1-11. If your Netgear is using channels 12 or 13 try changing it to a channel between 1 and 11.

  • Can the Airport Card just go bad?

My MacBook finds the wireless network from my router but won't join it when i tell it to. I have accessed the internet directly from my cable modem. I have tried accessing other wireless networks at friends houses to no avail. I haven't run the Apple hardware test yet. Is it possible that the internal airport card has gone bad and just isnt receiving the signal from the router?

    Hi
Just like any other electronic component, an airport card can go bad. However, it's more likely that you're yet another victim of the unexplained wireless connection problem which is plaguing MacBooks. A quick survey of this forum will find many similar posts to yours

  • Problem with Airport Card

    Hi
I've just moved to a house which has a third party router for pc wireless internet access. I have a G3 ibook and have just bought a (frighteningly expensive) original Airport card from ebay so i can join the wireless fun.
I have installed the card as per the instructions on the apple site, however my ibook won't recognise it as being installed (under Network, Network Port Configurations, the only options are for the modem or ethernet - I am currently using the ethernet which is not ideal). I have taken the card out and re-installed it several times but no joy.
I fear I may have bought a duff card, but I don't know if i'm am missing something obvious with regard to setting it up. Please help!

According to this AirPort Quick Assist by Apple, if your computer doesn't see the card, it isn't installed properly.
My AirPort card failed on me. The way we determined that was my husband swapped cards with me. My card wouldn't work in his iBook, either, and his card worked fine in mine. You may, indeed, have received a bad card.
Read through that AirPort Quick Assist article and follow the links. If nothing there helps, you may want to check out the AirPort Forum to see if someone there has any further suggestions for you.
In my experience, outside of that card failing on me, AirPort has always "just worked."
    Good luck.

  • Pismo and Airport card; Card not found

I just got an airport card for my Pismo. The computer cant see the card. What do I need to do to get it to work?
    Specs:
    PB Pismo G3
    728mb Ram
    OSX 10.4.11
    Airport Card

    I figured it out.
For those having the same problem, Make sure your card is installed correctly. The airport card DOES NOT go in the PCI card slot.
    Read the correct instructions below.
    1. Shut down your PB.
    2. Pop open your keyboard.
    3. Take off the heat shield.
    4. You will see a small black wire just to the right of the PCI slot. This is your antenna.
    5. Plug in the antenna to your card and slide the airport card ABOVE the PCI slot, with the serial numbers facing up.
    6. Adjust the antenna wire to fit as you put the heat shield back on.
    7. Power up and hit ok on the dialog screen saying airport card found.
    8. Wait for wireless network to appear in your wireless network and then your ready to go.

  • Security encryption for Original Airport Card?

I recently purchased and installed an Apple Original Airport card(802.11b) for my iBook G3 running OSX Tiger(10.4.8). All available written documentation that I've obtained is telling me that the card is only 128 bit WEP encryption capable. However, I have been able to log onto my home network and access the internet via my router which is configured for WPA-PSK security encryption.
Now, my question is? Do I have a problem with my home network security if I'm able to access it with a wireless card that is not supposed to be able to access it? Has anyone else encountered this?

    Hey Guys,
I have a small problem with setting up our WIFI network!
I have a G3 IBOOK Clemshell & a PC XP SP2 both on the WIFI Network. Right now i just removed the SSID and i enabled MAC filtering. But i want to secure our Network more, but how do i do that.
How do i know, which WPA i need to take?
I have a Belkin router/ Modem and i can choose WPA/WPA2-Personal (PSK)but than i have a field for "Authentication" what do i need to choose there? the options are: WPA-PSK, WPA2-PSK or WPA-PSK + WPA2-PSK. after that i have this field "Encryption Technique" and i can choose TKIP, AES or TKIP+AES! what to take???
    I know, so many questions,
but first of all, i am quite new to APPLE and to WIFIs so a lot to learn, i really do hope, you can give me a hand!
    Best Regards,
    Jan

  • IMac G5 won't boot; Airport card?

Last night my G5 iMac wouldn't start up. It tried for quite awhile with the fan making a lot of noise, but no luck. I was able to use my iBook and mount the G5 as a Firewire drive and the files on the disk seem okay, (I ran DiskUtility.) I was also able to boot in Safe mode and ran Profiler. It said my Airport card was not installed. (It hasn't been moved and no new software has been installed.) Would the Airport card have been turned on from Safe Mode? Would a dead Airport card cause the non-startup? Is there a way to check the card?

Yes. It booted from the Install disk and hardware check seemed to fine any problem, tho' the memory check took so long I stopped it. I was able to boot into Single User mode and also into Safe mode. I'm running a memory test now using Rmber in Safe mode.
I've also booted in FW Target mode and run TechTool and Disk Utility to check things; nothing found.
