Installed a 2nd HD, how do I clone the orig. drive onto the new one...

Hi All,
just bought and installed a 700Gig second internal hard drive. i'd like to clone my orig. HD onto this new one, what do i use to do that?,

Hi-
If you haven't, first, use Disk Utility to format the new drive.
Once formatted, download SuperDuper! and clone the old drive to the new drive.
Then, change the Startup Drive selection in System Preferences, and restart. All done.
Before you erase the old drive, though, make sure everything on the new clone works as it should.
One thing that is good to do before a clone, is to boot to the OS install disk, and use Disk Utility to repair the hard drive (old drive) using the "Repair Disk" command. This is to correct any directory errors. Any errors on a drive that is cloned, will also be cloned, so this is good to do before a clone is performed.

entally created an identical email acct, how to I delete the newer one and not the old one? And I'm receiving e's just from the new one.

Move the "e's" (email messages?) to the old account first. You can drag and drop.
To remove an account in Thunderbird:
    '''[http://kb.mozillazine.org/Menu_differences_in_Windows,_Linux,_and_Mac Tools|Account Settings]|<select the unwanted account>|'''
Down at the bottom of the left-hand pane, '''Account Actions''' then '''Remove Account'''.
Are both accounts using POP? That could explain why new messages appear in the new account but not the old.
It could help to post your Thunderbird settings data: '''Help|Troubleshooting Information'''. Clear the "Include account names" checkbox. Click on "Copy text to clipboard", then paste (ctrl+v) into your next posting here.

One you start up the new one for the first time, Setup Assistant starts and offers you the option of migrating your old Mac to your new Mac with Time Machine, among other choices, as the source. You can also use Migration Assistant (in the Utilities Folder) to do the same thing.

  • How Do I Clone an Old iPod to a New One?

I'm about to get an iPod 5th gen replacement from the Apple Store since my drive is going bad, but not dead yet. How can I wipe this one clean then when I get my new one (also a 5th gen) be sure that everything is set up just as it is on the old one, ie. Playlist, Podcasts, applications, movies, and everything else? If I name the new iPod the same as the last will it sync everything automatically the way it was on the old one?
Or do I have to hand select everything, in iTunes, all over again?
I want this as pain free as possible? What can I do now to have it be so?
    Thanks

I don't think the name matters. If you are currently syncing with iTunes, everything is already in the iTunes library. All you have to do is connect the new iPod and tell it to sync with the same settings as your current iPod. There's plenty of space on the iPod Classic, so it is easiest to sync everything, or at least everything that is music. You can be selective with podcasts and videos.

  • HT201250 My macbook pro crashed and I had to install a new hard drive. I restored from Time Machine backup all the files from my old hard drive onto my new one.

Does it really back up the whole new drive or does it only back up what's been added? It seemed like it was doing the whole thing when I tried it. I stopped it. Don't want to use up all the space on my external. Is there something else I need to do or did I mess up by not doing the migrating thing? thanks!

If you installed a new hard drive, it has nothing on it and yes TimeMachine is going to take forever to restore everything back.
I guess you'll have to erase and start over again now.
Too bad, you should have made bootable clones in addition to TimeMachine, they can restore in a hour or two depending upon content, they are also option key bootable.
TimeMachine has to go through and calculate all the files it needs to bring forward, the files are strewn all over the drive. The read heads are moving all over the platters all the time from fast sectors to slow ones, not matching what's occuring on the internal drive.
With a clone the files are defragmented and optimized, the drive reads one file, moves the heads a tiny bit and reads the next all the while transferring exactly to the internal drive, they are more in step with one another, thus it's much faster restoring from a clone than TM.

  • I have two different iPods.  How do I connect the new one to iTunes?

I now have two iPods - a 30GB iPod I purchased about a year and a half ago which plays music, Audible books, and has photos slide show capability plus color screen. Yesterday I collected enough credit card points to afford the new 5th Generation iPod. Yeah, I'm an iPod addict. I wanted the video capability. So now I have it. My question is:
Do I have to download iTunes again, or can I connect my new iPod to the iTunes that I have been using for my other iPod? I can't find the answer to this question anywhere. Also:
Can I connect the new iPod on the same computer as my old iPod is connected on without getting confusion on the iTunes site and on the iPod?

Ya, you can simply connect it to your current iTunes and go. More info here...

  • My wafe has an ipad and just got an iPad 2.  How do I activate the new one with the date from her old one?

My Wife has a new iPad 2, how do I transfer the date on her iPad to her iPad 2?  I found some instructions and it instructs me to use a computer.  The only other computer I have is a windows os laptop.  What is the best method?

You should use a computer with a reasonably current version of Windows (or Mac OS X for an Apple computer).
Load the current version of iTunes (free) which you can get at http://www.apple.com/itunes
Sync her old iPad using iTunes.  Do that by opening iTunes and plugging her old iPad into the computer using the USB cable that came with the iPad.
Then plug the iPad 2 into the same iTunes and let it sync.  One of the options (since you say it's new) will be to restore from the old iPad.

  • I can't install an older version of flash player and the new one won't work.

I've read on the boards everyone says to run the Adobe uninstaller prior to trying to install the older version and I did, but the download still says it can't install the older version because it isn't the current version. And the current version isn't running on my computer. All I have is a black screen. I need the adobe flash player to for work purposes and it is really hindering my ability to function at work without it. Can someone please provide some kind of help that may actually work? Because I've uninstalled and reinstalled this several times. I have tried adjusting settings...everything I have found on the boards so far.

My experience (going back to a G5 iMac in 2005) is that you MUST install the lower version first in order to run two different versions on the same machine. I did it that way with CS and CS3, then CS3 and CS4, and later on my MacBook with CS4 and CS5. Now my Mini has CS5.5 and CS6, but I've always had to install the lower CS version first or the higher would keep the lower from installing.
So you will probably have to remove CS4 and then reinstall them both in the proper order.
Is there any particular reason you want or need both? In my case, I already had CS 3 and installed CS4 in addition, but later removed CS3 as I found CS4 was able to do everything CS3 did and then some. In fact I'm unaware of anything aside from some older filters that would run better in CS3 than CS4.

  • My computer crashed. How do I authorize the new one for my iPod nano?

My old computer crashed and I restored the music off the iPod back onto this new computer and into iTunes. But, it keeps saying I don't have priveleges to do something. I think it's because the iPod is only registered for the old computer?? I don't know, but could someone please help me out. It's so frustrating dealing with restoring everything and getting your iPod situation back to normal after a computer crash.... Please help me. Thanks.

  • How can I clone my old macbook to my new Macbook Pro 768GB SSD

    Hi,
I have a 2 year old macbook and have just received my new Macbook Pro Retina dispaly with a 768gb SSD.
How can I clone my old drive to my new Macbook as the unit is sealed so I cant ge the drive out.
    thanks.

Bootable clones can only be used with the same model machine as there are machine specific hardware drivers involved that are different between different models of Mac's.
Probally the fastest way would be to clone the old Mac boot drive to a external drive using Carbon Copy Cloner, then connecting it to the new Mac and booting the new Mac (first time) into Setup Assistant and then use that to "migrate" accounts and programs over. Takes a few hours.
Transfering via Wifi does take FOREVER. like several days in some cases.
If you have the new Mac already setup, then use Migration Assitant in the Utilities folder.
However Setup Assistant and Migrations are not perfect and tend to fail badly if you had problems on the older Mac, sometimes these problems are unseen and only until you try to use the new Mac afterwards do they appear.
You might want to opt instead of installing the same name account on the new Mac, installing 10.8 compatible programs from original sources and then use the external clone of the old Mac drive to transfer just user files manually into the same Pcitures, Movies, Documents etc., folders.
Since you have a SSD, you can load programs later, it's hard drives that you want to install programs before user data to run them faster.
Get a cleaner machine doing it manaully that way and you know there is nothing nsaty hidden, like what Setup Assistant and Migrations often transfer.

  • How do you clone the install disk?

i was reading in another post about installing the OS over a network and the solution given was to install to an Ext. Firewire drive and clone the installed OS to the firewire drive then clone it again onto the target mac.
this solution may not work well for me, but i too was considering a family user license to update as many of my macs as i can. However, i want to wait until the next version of the OS is available. (i see no point in buying an OS i already own on one computer for another $199, so i will wait).
the other thread offered up two solutions. one was to have a, if i understand it correctly, i network version of the OS (X server), and the other was as posted above.
so how do yo clone the OS (i assume it is the actual installed OS and not the installer. how much room is needed to do it?

yes, thank you i see that.
i don't know much about servers, but it kind of sounds like i would be running the OS from a server and not the individual macs. i don't think that will work for me either.
it sounds like i will need to by the multi-license then exchange the DVDs for CDs so i can install on the G4 DP 533.
i could use the clone method, but the mac isn't really a clone, they have their own identities in mutlti-user log in.
