Yes, you're right. It is the Seagate Momentus XT and it does not spin. That was just a layman's term for computer illiterate like myself. After hours of inspection & a prayer, I discovered by pulling the 4 GB memory chips out I put in, replacing the 1.5 GB back in for the memory which I upgraded 3 years ago. Chime! It works! So it is the 4 GB memory causing the problem. But why? Does that mean my Macbook Pro does not support with more memory? The fan noise is now gone which I suspect it was caused the other overheating Seagate hard drive & eventually causing the crash. However, the top bar temp indicator shows 174˙F @ 000rpm. Does that also mean the fan on the left is not working? (the right fan on the board works). Do they work simutaneously? Or left fan is just a back up?

Sure-glad to help you. You will not lose any data by changing synching to MacBook Pro from imac. You have set up Time Machine, right? that's how you'd do your backup, so I was told, and how I do my backup on my mac. You should be able to set a password for it. Save it. Your stuff should be saved there. So if you want to make your MacBook Pro your primary computer, I suppose, back up your stuff with Time machine, turn off Time machine on the iMac, turn it on on the new MacBook Pro, select the hard drive in your Time Capsule, enter your password, and do a backup from there. It might work, and it might take a while, but it should go. As for clogging the hard drive, I can't say. Depends how much stuff you have, and the hard drive's capacity. As for moving syncing from your iMac to your macbook pro, should be the same. Your phone uses iTunes to sync and so that data should be in the cloud. You can move your iTunes Library to your new Macbook pro
you should be able to sync your phone on your new MacBook Pro. Don't know if you can move the older backups yet-maybe try someone else, anyways,

and re-authorize your new macBook Pro
time machine is an application, and should be found in the Applications folder. it is built in to OS X, so there is nothing else to buy. double click on it, get it going, choose the Hard drive in your Time capsule/Airport as your backup Time Machine and go for it. You should see a circle with an arrow on the top right hand of your screen (the Desktop), next to the bluetooth icon, and just after the wifi and eject key (looks sorta like a clock face). This will do automatic backups of your stuff.

Yes pretty much that, but to clarify sorry
Opened Lightroom.
Create new catalogue.
This opened the Windows 8 file explorer window and Windows recognises the drive. So I was able to create a catalogue there and save.
I then inserted my memory card into my card reader which LR recognised. I selected it, chose all the photos within and then navigated to the right side of the Lr import dialogue window to locate this problem drive as on this occasion i want the RAW files on the same drive as the lrcat. However all my other drives are listed but not this Samsung SSD.
In addition this Samsung SSD is not listed a drive to import from in the same dialogue window.

Yes I have. It is very easy to do yourself. If you can turn a screw driver and unplug then replug one cable you can do it yourself.
The hardest part is having a current backup or clone of your original drive, that is if you don't want to do a clean install of OS X and programs, and then restoring either to the SSD. Although that is fairly easy also.

They are very easy to install.
Note that I'm not sure on how this may impact your warranty. Nothing in an Air is considered user upgradable. Therefore there would be no reason for a consumer to open it up. As Apple does not consider the SSD as user replacable, it may cause warranty issues. I have not seen any comments from anyone who has upgraded their SSD and subsequently had to have service.

Put the Old drive in an external notebook drive enclosure. Install the SSD in your computer. Boot from your Old drive's Recovery HD:
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Clone Lion/Mountain Lion using Restore Option of Disk Utility
     1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu then press the Continue
         button.
     2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
     3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
     4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it
         to the Destination entry field.
     5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
         the Source entry field.
     6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the New SSD. Source means the external Old hard drive.
Set the new Startup Disk to the SSD and restart the computer.
This process clones both your old OS X volume and the Recovery HD volume to the SSD. You can use a similar process to clone the SSD to the new hard drive you will install.

I want to swap out my current 1TB harddrive from my year-and-a-half old HP ENVY with a 500 GB solid state harddrive that I just purchased from Amazon.
Two questions:
1) Is this solid state harddrive compatiable with my computer (specs below)?
2) I want to reinstall windows onto the solid state harddrive after I install it (assuming its compatable). How can I go about putting Windows 8 on a bootable usb drive to do this? The computer does not have an optical drive and I don't have an external optical drive, so installing Windows via bootable usb is my only option.
I'm aware I can "clone" my PC onto the external harddrive if I wish, but I'd rather do a clean install if I can.

Windows 8.1 has a built-in tool to make a recovery usb drive:

The HP Backup and Recovery app can also do it. This is a factory clean install image and any data and programs you have added will be lost. If you have an external hard drive you can also do a backup with Windows File History. Then, add the backed up files to the factory install. You can also use File History to make a system image type backup and restore it to the new drive using a repair disk but this is virtually the same as a clone, which you said you do not want.

My X301 with solid state Hard disk lost all data

Hello all people, excuse my poor english i try to explain my problem.
1.- I have a Lenovo x301 (type 2776-TMU) with a 128 Gygabites solid state hard disk (Samsung MMCQE28G8MUP-0VAL1)
2-The sympton is: Lost all data of the hard disk and apears 0 partitions and 0 bytes used.
3.- I run all type of diagnostics and all pass OK.
4. I restore windows,aplications etc. and all work fine, but in any random time, the hard disk lost all info and another time apear 0 Partition and 0 bytes used.
5. I try to install, bios, firmware or any update of the lenovo web, and no resolve my problem.
6.- In a last chance install via dvd a fresh instalation with oem windows 7, and present the same sympton of point 4.
7.- I change parameters on the bios setup of the SATA interface (ochi or compatible) with the identical result of the 4 point.
How you understand, i have a big problem and desesperate, but i not sure if my hard disk is of the problem, or the mother board, any firmware, etc.
Any have idea in how attack o determine exactly the origen of my problem?

Putting in new solid state hard drive

I'm trying to instal a new solid state hard drive into my Pavilion p-6. I ordered the re-installation disks from HP. The new solid state hard drive is smaller than the original drive. When I put in disk#1 the disk promt tells me the new hard drive is smaller than the original and it will not continue the process. HOW CAN I OVER RIDE THIS? And make this work?

FAILED: Solid State Hard Drive

So bummed I've had the computer a year and just out of warantee. I remember getting errors form the computer just after I got it but, my daughter was about to have a hemispherectomy (1/2 brain removed due to seizures) I hadn't had the time to get this error looked into. I got the error every once in a while and ignored it there wasn't enough time to get the computer looked at with all the appointments for my daughter. Now I'm a month out of warantee and had attempted to install Lion which failed because my solid state hard drive failed. I guess the errors were coming from the hard drive.
Sadly the computer was a Christmas gift from my husband last year and now I'm looking an an 800 dollar repair. Simply the end to a year I wouldn't want to remember....sigh!
I sure hope you guys have had better luck......

Update:
     Phone call to retail store this AM and didn't get much the lead support guy was in training and I was told that he'd call me in the afternoon. I called again at 3pm EST and was told that there isn't much they can do. I am a month out of warantee. They did tell me that if they sent my computer out to a authorized retailer that the cost would be 200 dollars instead of 800 dollars. The said that the 800 dollars would be the cost to have my computer fixed at the store.
     I'm really bummed my kid was really sick and I didn't have time to spend on myself to get my computer fixed. Now that I have the time my computer is one month out of warantee. I take great care of my laptops I had my last one for 8 years. It was a Windows machine and it basically died from over use. My mac air was a gift from my husband and it was like he was reading my mind because I wanted a mac with a solid state.
     The retail store told me to call Apple Care...I do understand that I am a month out of warantee and that is not anyones fault but mine but, for a solid state to go bad after a year that's just faulty hardware....COME ONE PEOPLE!!

T400s solid state hard drive already full

I have a newly-purchased t400s with a 120gb solid state hard drive. The drive is already almost full, and I have only uploaded about 35gb of data from my old computer. How is this possible? Are there specific programs that are eating up my storage space? Thanks.

Disk Drive Full. Whats the best way to transfer operating system to larger non solid state hard drive .

Heres the Lowdown,
I have a Desktop that has a 250 G Solid state hard drive , and a secondary 750 G Hard drive.
My OS is installed on the solid state , and also a lot of my audio software which needs to also be on the same disk drive as the operating system ;
Problem is I've run out of room and continually get DISK FULL error messages , which stop me from doing any real time audio tracking and recording.
I've backed up all files to an airport drive ( I'm a bit paranoid about losing vital info) .
Is there a way to reinstall the OS onto the second larger drive and just transfer the remaining software across
Will I have to reinstall all previous versions of software if I do this?
Will The processing slow down if the OS is run on the Standard drive rather than the Solid State drive ?
Last time I tried to clear some space on the OS drive I accidentally deleted vital information, so I wanna make sure I do this properly.
Any advice would be much appreciated.

SuperDuper (Free for a full clone). Recovery partition will not be transferred
Applications -> Utilities -> Disk Utility -> Restore (from SSD to 750 hard disk). Recovery partition will not be transferred.
Or install the OS on the 750 hard disk (with will install a recovery partition), then use migration assistant to move your files over. Or you could then use one of the above utilities to overwrite the just installed OS without messing with the recovery partition.

Solid state hard drive is not big enough

I recently purchased a PC with a 4 TB hard drive. There is also a 60G Solid State hard drive on which the operating system is loaded. There is not enough room for CS5.5 and the operating system. I would like to uninstall CS5.5 and install it to the 4 TB drive but I was told Adobe needs to be on the same drive as the operating system. Any suggestions?

That's nonsense. Adobe apps can be installed just fine to a secondary drive. However some components will always end up on your C: drive for practical reasons - the licensing system, PDF handling, some other shared components - as that's the only way they can be found and loaded reliably by all programs. that stuff is at most about 1 GB. The rest of the programs can go to the otehr drive. I would suggest, though, that you create a separate partition for this, not use the full 4TB partition.
