Installed additional RAM but computer performance now worse
Can anybody please help? I have a T61 that came with 2Gb RAM (1GB + 1GB) and I recently purchased another 2GB chip. The problem is that after installation I had a total RAM of 3GB (1GB + 2GB), the Windows Experience Index score actually decreased! It went from 3.5 to 3.1!!
Also, under the category Memory (RAM), the score remained unchanged at 4.8!! Should this have at least increased? Also, I am not noticing any improvements in performance.
Is there something that I haven't done or is there anything I should do after the installation? And yes, I did refresh/update from index score.
Please don't tell me I need to buy a new notebook!!!
Thanks
Part of the problem is that with two differents sized DIMMs you lose the Dual Channel mode feature of the RAM, so the effective throughput of the RAM would be lowered compared to the two 1GB modules that operated in dual-channel.
If possible I would suggest 2 x 2G modules for a total of 4GB or if you can afford it 2 x 4G modules for a total of 8GB this will keep the dual channel mode active and the RAM performance optimal.

I purchased Lightroom 5 and Elements 12 and installed them on a computer. I now have a new computer, and wish to install them on the new one. When I tried to do so, my only option seemed to be Adobe Cloud. When I was asked for my LR serial number, it was not accepted. Please help me install these two products; I prefer stand-alone, rather than a monthly fee. Thank you

Installing additional RAM into hp s5150t
I have a quad core s5150. I recently tried to add two additional RAM modules. I verified that I had purchased the correct RAM on curcial.com and by speaking with their reps. The computer would not take the RAM in any configuration. We tried seating the new RAM into the old modules one at a time and it still would not work. At last, the crucial rep told me to try and update the BIOS. Hard as I tried, for three hours, I was unable to find the BIOS update on the HP website despite looking where the HP video told me to look. There were lots of update options but no BIOS heading. The auto detect tool could not identify my computer for some reason. The HP Update tool installed with the machine said no updates were available.
I am wondering a few things, 1) Where can I find the BIOS update on the HP site? It is not in the list of updates on this page, where it is supposed to be:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=4063&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=4002...
2. Is it possible there is a problem or conflict beacuse the machine shipped with Windows Vista and I updated it to Windows 7? Looking in the BIOS, the last update was May of 2009, long befoe Windows 7 was updated from the old VISTA files.
3. Any other reason you might know for the modules to not be working? We exchagned them for a fresh set already and still the same problem. They are clicking into place. Not sure what to try. Thanks for your support, Jaco. I appreciate your input.

Restart Error message after installing additional RAM. PLEASE HELP.
I have a Powerbook G4, 1.33 GHz processor, running 10.3.9. I just recently upgraded my RAM to 1GB, from 256MB. After installing the RAM I have started to encounter problems, where applications will automatically shut down, and also I am receiving a message that cover the entire screen, and states that I must restart the system by holding the power button down, when this appears nothing is functional, I can only power off. I have insured the RAM was installed correctly. I followed all proper procedures when installing. Does this mean the RAM is bad, or something else? Please help!!
Welcome to the Apple discussions.
Our Powerbooks are sensitive souls when it comes to RAM, due to the Apple architecture and how power is throttled on the memory bus. While memory can meet the Apple specs, typically cheaper RAM can fail with the symptoms you're seeing. Recommend using Crucial, Kingston (not their value ram memory, though), or Samsung. Crucial guarantees their memory will work when chosen from the memory selector on their web site.
It is possible you've just got some bad memory and could get a replacement, however, if the brand is unknown, you may want to return it and obtain one of the brands above. -
Anyone install additional RAM into your new MacBook?
I slapped a new 1 gig stick into my MacBook and noticed that after removing the bracket in front of the ram slots, adding new ram and putting it back that the bracket wasn't quite flush due to the pads that cover the ram slots, even after screwing the bracket back in. Anyone else experience this? I am just curious as to whether or not it is normal. When I removed the bracket initially to get at the RAM, I don't recall if the bracket was dead flat against the slots.
oh no, the RAM installed just fine. I am speaking to the metal bracket that covers the RAM slots and needs to be removed before installing ram. This bracket has cushions that cover the slots. When I put the bracket back on after installing the RAM, I was unsure whether or not these cushions should fit under the top of the RAM slots so that the bracket is flat after being screwed back in?
If you remove the battery and look at the RAM slots, is the bracket after RAM installation completely flat? -
How can i activate the copy on my laptop without re-purchasing?
Activating the program is different, depending on which version of the program you're using -- and you don't say which version of the program you're using.
The program allows for two activations of the program at a time. If you've already used one activation on your new defunct computer, you'll need to contact Adobe Tech Support, explain the situation and have them release one of your activations. (Note that this is a user-to-user forum, so we aren't able to do this. You'll need to contact Adobe Tech Support.) -
Installed 3gb ram, but only 2gb usable?
I installed an additional GB of ram on my thnkpad T400, and after booting up, I right clicked computer in the start menu and went to properties. It says "3GB installed (2GB usable)". How do I make all 3 GB usuable? from what I understand 3 GB is the max on a 32 bit OS
EDIT: Now after going to system configuration>boot tab>advanced>i set the total memory to 3000MB, and now under properties on my computer it says "3GB installed (2.46 usable)

Note that I'm running Win 7 Pro 64 now, not Vista 64 as it says in the notes. You couldn't make me go back to Vista or any 32 bit OS if it was the last OS on earth

Installing additional ram memory
I am trying to install memory in my Mac Pro, but some of the risers come upon the hardware configuration panel as empty. I have moved around the memory modules and they all work, but just not when they are all installed at once. I have two sets of 2 gb modules and four 1 gb modules. Two of the 2 gig modules are are Centon and two are another brand. All of the 1 gig modules are exactly the same. Currently, I have 4x1GB modules installed and 2x2gb modules installed. My computer is reading the 2 GB modules, but only reading two of the 1GB modules. Here's my Mac configuration:
Model Identifier: MacPro2,1
Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
Number Of Processors: 2
Total Number Of Cores: 4
Memory: 6 GB
Bus Speed: 1.33 GHz
When I putt all four of the 2GB modules in the first two slots and the four 1GB modules in the last two, the computer read the 1 GB modules but one of the 2GB modules????? When I removed all of the 1 GB moduels, the computer then read two of the 2GB modules. I am totally confused. I have tested all of the modules and they all work in one configuration or another, and I've checked all of the slots and they work too. Any suggestions on what I should try next?
thanksHi, this may or may not resolve the issue:
MacBook Pro: How to remove or install memory:
Additional notes For best performance, fill both memory slots, installing an equal memory module in each slot.
In Mac computers there is a hardware component known as the "RAM Equalizer". The function of this is impeded when the memory slots are filled with unequal memory quantities. -
Installed Additional RAM - anything else?
I just installed an additional 512mb of RAM on my iBook, bringing the total RAM up to 1GB. The installation was pretty painless, but now I'm wondering: is there anything I should do to double-check the RAM to make sure it is working properly? On the 'About this Mac' page, it does show that my Mac now has 1GB of RAM, which is a good sign - but should I pursue anything else like a Hardware Test or the like just to be sure?
Usually, you'll be alright, but if things start acting odd, like your machine stops booting, etc. that's when you might start thinking there is something wrong with your RAM.
Until then, chill out and enjoy things.

Kernel Panic only after I install 16GiB RAM but it passed memtest and AHT
Kernel Panics occur after I installed the 16GiB RAM(Corsair Vengeance Laptop Memory Kit 16 GB (2x8 GB) DDR3 1600MHz CL10 PC3 12800 (CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10) in my MacBook Pro 17" 2011 early. It might appear in login window, or after using Safari for 2 or 3 hours. If I did't use the MBP overnight and just let it run, there would be strong possibility that kernel panic didn't occur. But on the next day when I went up and start using the computer, the kernel panic occur in half an hour.
I run the memtest for 12+ hours and Apple Hardware Test for 19+ hours, but no error was found. I tried OS X Lion 10.7.4 and OS X Mountain Lion 10.8 GM, and even a clean install of 10.7.4, but it still occur.
However, when I install one of the 16GiB a.k.a 8GiB, kernel panic never occur. I even tried one 8GiB with another my old 4GiB ram, and kernel panic didn't occur either.
I've tried to fix the problems for 2 weeks, and I did everything I can. So, can anyone tell me which part might be bad, Mac or RAM? Should I goto Genius Bar or ask Corsair for RMA?
Here's my latest panic log:

My 8GiB RAM is also two 4GiB DDR3 1600MHz (SAMSUNG) and it was running very well.
I also checked the intel documents (http://ark.intel.com/products/50067/Intel-Core-i7-2720QM-Processor-(6M-Cache-up- to-3_30-GHz), and it says:
Memory Types
DDR3-1066/1333/1600
If you have read my original reply to you post, I did mention that someimes it will work and sometimes it won't. Your Samsung might be rated at 1600MHz but the CL could be higher than your Corsair which is why it worked.
The memory Type you read in the link you provided is motherboard/logicboard depended. Your Logic board is rated at 1333MHz. So going 1600MHz will not benefit you since you're locked at 1333MHz.

Kernel panic after installing additional ram
Hi there.
(I think this should go here, not in laptop issues because it seems to be more hardware-related)
I have a laptop Acer Aspire 2920Z with 2x512 Mb stock ram and I recently bought an memory upgrade 2x2gb. Any of them works when inserted separately, but when I install both, I see kernel panic upon starting X on my i686 Arch installation (and /proc/meminfo shows that I have only 3Gb).
The same behaviour occurs when I try to boot from latest Arch install iso or x86_64 archbang livecd.
My BIOS is updated to latest version and it shows that I have 4Gb of RAM installed.
Right now I installed x86_64 linux kernel but I still have kernel_panic on booting my machine.
Is there any chance that I can use 4gb ram on my laptop?
Also, what are the ways to save those error messages that kernel panic provides? (aside from just taking a picture of the screen with my camera)cra wrote:I installed kernel by changing architecture param in pacman.conf, running pacman -Syy and pacman -S linux, as described in the corresponding page on the wiki, but without reinstalling every single package I have
Do that step.

Wait, you mean just booting the livecd gets you a kernel panic? Insert both of them at the same time, and the test them with memtest86+
Chances are your motherboard pins could have a problem. A problem that is noticiable when you insert both sticks.
Test them with memtest86+.

Anyone know if there is a video for installing additional ram in an early 80's intel Imac?
I bought some ram for my early 80s Imac. Looking for an install video to help me to put it in.
I did mean 2008. Thanks for the link. Got a crucial 2 channel kit thinking I would add them to the original 1 gig in the computer but the videos show people taking out the original, making the 3 gig I wanted (so I can install Yosemite) only 2 gig which I don't know if will work because some of it will be used up. I want to try to install but am afraid if I do and its not enough, they won't take it back. Oh, in case anyone wondering .... I have no experience at doing stuff to computers at all ... none. Its frustrating. I can build houses, cabinets, anything about and this Imac scares me to death, lol. And I bought Crucial memory because guy at Apple store said very good and cheaper. Thank you

MacBook ProUm, did you buy it from apple as 1 stick or 2? If
you bought it as two, then you really need to replace
both sticks else the most you can get is 1.5 gigs
(and everyone will tell you its bad to have unmatched
sticks, since it kills dual channel ram).
How much of a performance hit is it really? I heard someone saying that it kills video performance, but I don't know. This months MacAddict ran some RAM tests using Photoshop (via Rosetta) on an intel MacMini. These are the results, from best performance to worst:
2Gig (2x1Gig)
1.5Gig (1x1Gig, 1x512MB)
1.25 (1x1Gig, 1x256)
1Gig (1x1Gig)
1Gig (2x512)
(the above 2 were pretty much dead even)
768 (1x512, 1x256)
512 (2x256)
512 (1x512)
This somewhat unscientific test tells me that with small amounts of ram (512 total) 2 sticks are better than 1. However, with 1Gig, "mismatched" actually performs equally to 2 sticks. Also a single 1Gig is outperformed by 1.256Gig (mismatched).
Basically the performance diff is very slight. I got mine w/ 1x512, and I have no qualms at all in running 1.5Gig mismatched (I just bought a 1Gig stick).
The article even has a little box titled "THE MATCHED-PAIR MYTH" and concludes that mismatching a pair doesn't really matter.
"in our testing, matched-pair RAM didn't provide a quantifiable improvement over mismatched RAM."

Help: I upped the RAM, but Computer is still sluggish
Hello,
I increased the memory of my Powerbook G4 (12 inch, 1 GHz). The original RAM was 256MB and I added another slot of 1G -- brings the current total to 1.256 G.
The computer is still sluggish, though. Multi-tasking is slow. It "thinks" alot and "spins" a lot. Tick, tock, tick, tock.
I've been watching the memory info on the Activity Monitor for the last few weeks/months. I've noticed that after I close down some applications, it doesn't seem to free up the memory. For example, right now it shows:
Wired: 120.19 MB
Active: 342.08 MB
Inactive: 791.89 MB
TOTAL USED: 1.23 GB
TOTAL FREE: 24.89 MB
VM size: 4.96 GB
Page ins/outs: 39153/1372
Why does the computer not free up all that Inactive memory? Rebooting the computer only fixes the problem for a moment.
Is there a configuration setting I've missed somewhere?
Please help! Thank you!!!
Powerbook G4 Mac OS X (10.4.7)WorldTraveller,
As a computer tech I'll try and explain the basics of memory usage in OS X. It works differently to say Windows if you come from PCs.
Wired: Used for vital system files of Mac OS X, that has to be in RAM all the time.
Active: It is memory that is actively in use within a certain time period.
Inactive: Is either: a) memory that is being used by applications you have open but it hasn't been used in a while or b) memory that has been used by a previously opened application. When more memory is required by a program this is the area that typically gets shuffled around first.
Free: Unused memory that can be used by new applications. The system will always keep some free memory around so it's available promptly if a program requests it.
You can think of inactive as a cache. If you have say Safari open then you close it & restart it, then it will open up faster the second time because it'll still be held in inactive memory. Or a holding area for apps running in the background not being used. This why inactive has the highest number usually. Overall I wouldn't worry about the numbers much coming from the PC field for 18 years, OS X memory management is far more effective then Windows.
As for the hard drive: I noticed my 1.33 Ghz model the fan did run and come on far more then my original 867 Mhz model. One of the reasons I really missed my Rev A running Jaguar the fan rarely came on. In the end I put it down to more heat being generated from the faster chip and Apple did change the level at which the fan kicks in after Jaguar. Mainly because I think most complained about the heat. Personally I'd have taken slightly more warmth for silence. As long as the fan doesn't stay on then it's normal from my experience. I must say my new mini is as quite as my original PB so I can't complain. Until the super drive kicks into high gear then it sounds like a fighter jet LOL.
Anyway I hope this has helped explain things a little better.
Rick
