Installed airport extreme having range problems

i have a mac osx and installed an airport extreme in my house, and wanted to extend the range down to my shop which is aprox 300 ft away. it is a wood building with windows. i bought a express and placed it in the window at the shop and the light doesnt turn green. (express is working i tested it at the house) last weekend i took my ipad and walked to the shop and about halfway down the signal strenghth went from 3bars to 2bars,when i get into the the shop there is barely 1bar. i want to stream the nascar races this season and am just beside myself. my internet carrier sold me a high speed modem that doesnt seem to make any difference. do i need to place another express between house and shop? if so how do i weather proof it?  can i run a dsl line down to the shop from my house and hook it up to the express? been messing with this for over a month with no success.. please help me!

the range of the Extreme is more like 150 ft as you have seen from your quick check with the iPad.  To get an adequate signal in the shop you could run the DSL line out there and put in another modem, or you could run an ethernet cable from the Extreme to the shop and connect that to the Express and then use the wireless signal of hte Express.  Putting an Extreme mid-way and prviding waterproof enclosure protection, and power will introduce more issues to deal with.

  • AirPort Extreme HD causing problems

I've finally got my hard disk (Maxtor OneTouch 250GB) working with my AirPort Extreme.
The problem is that I have folders with upto 80GB of files in them, which just dont open when I click on them. I'd rather not format the disk because I have way too much required data on it.
Is there any way of making the disk work perfectly without having to wait for 10 mintues for a folder to open (which may/may not open and causes the HD to be disconnected)?

Actually although my hard disk is connected via AirPort Extreme, my iMac is connected to the network on Ethernet. So my iMac isn't using the wireless at all to connect to the hard disk.
My hard disk has stopped going offline randomly, but it doesn't make a difference anymore because I can't even open any of the folders on the hard disk.
I was told that if I formatted the hard disk and created smaller folders then the computers on the network would be able to access files faster.
I'm trying not to format my hard disk, so if anyone has an alternative solution that solves this then I would really appreciate it. Thanks.

  • I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless network with Airport Express. Everything is fine until I try to select Extend the wireless network.  I select Extend Wireless network but have no success. Ideas?

I have installed Airport Extreme on my iMac, but want to extend the wireless to rooms with a weak signal.  The internet connection is fine with the basic setup. As soon as I go into Airport Utility to select Extend Wireless Network and fill in what I believe is proper information, I get an error message that Airport Extreme no longer has an IP address, the internet connection is broken, and under Wireless, that there is a wireless network in existence that can't be found. Rebooting the modem only brings the Airport Extreme back to the starting gate so that the internet is once again available.  I assumed (naively) that with the All Mac All-the-Time context, adding Airport Express would truly be Plug and Play.   I got the plug, but no play.  I asked a Comcast technical specialist about it and he said that I needed to reset the Airport Express settings back to their default, factory status.  I looked that process up online and found out that the way to do that was to hold down the reset button, then plug Airport Express into the socket and wait for the green light to flash four times.  Then wait 45 seconds and the default settings will return.  I did all that, only to find out that after the initial flash of green, green never appeared again.  I got a fast flashing yellow light, followed by the light going off.  Apparently this didn't reset it properly.  So, after hours trying to get this system to work, I appeal to someone who can see through this mess and provide the key to success!

Let's see if I can get this straight.
You have an Airport Extreme base station that is set to "Create a wireless network" and you have the box checked for "allow this network to be extended"....
Then you have an Airport Express that is set to "Extend a wireless network" which you selected the name of your network in the box...
    Correct?
    See this Apple document:

The wireless unit on the right of the diagram can be either of the newer Apple base stations.

  • How do i install airport extreme on a windows pc and route it to another windows desktop?

How do I install airport extreme into a windows desktop pc and then successfully route it to another windows desktop?

The AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) is an Internet router that supports both wired and wireless network clients. You can connect both of your desktop, using either media, to the AEBS for network connectivity.

I just installed Airport Extreme. It works as a wireless network on my Macbook. It won't connect with my Windows Visa PC. Message reads: "settings saved on this computer for the network don't match requirements of the network." I seem to need to enter a security key/passphrase to connect to the PC. Where do I find them?
    Thanks for your help.

I assume that you have Wireless Security enabled on your AirPort's wireless network. The issue maybe that the PC is unable to use the WPA password itself and will require using the Equivalent Network Password instead.
To get this password, you will use the AirPort Utility from the MacBook:
Start the AirPort Utility > Select the AirPort base station > Manual Setup
Now, before doing anything else, go up to the utility's menu bar at the top of the screen, and then, choose "Base Station," and then, Equivalent Network Password from the drop-down menu. You will see two items: 1) WPA Password, which should look familiar to you, and 2) WPA Pre-Shared Key. It should be a long hexidecimal set of numbers and letters. Jot down this second item.
You will want to use the value you just jotted down when entering the password from the Windows Visa PC.

  • Trouble with Maya 8.5 after installing Airport Extreme

Installed Airport Extreme 802.11n a couple weeks ago - using OS 10.4 on an iMac and 10.3 on G4 Quicksilver.
    Network is working fine.
Tried to use Maya 8.5 this week and program freezes on startup. Only change to Mac system is installing network.
Is Autodesk license manager unable to recognize computer with network setup?
    Thanks for any help.

Maya not being able to recognize the license dat file will not cause Maya to lock up or crash. Have you run a Maya crash log to confirm what is causing this? Since upgrading from Tiger to Leopard I also upgraded to Maya 2008 (don't know why Autodesk didn't call it 9.0..lol) from 8.5. I haven't experienced any system crashes on Leopard, even on the MacBook Pro (Core 2 Duo 2.33 GHz, 3 GB RAM, ATI X1600). Note: I'm also using the AEBS in the SOHO and no issues with the license server.

  • Why airplay stop when installed airport extreme

After installing airport extreme, I cannot airplay from my iPhone 4S.

First check to make sure that the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) has been configured to allow the wireless to be extended.
Open AirPort Utility, select the AEBS and click Manual Setup
Click on the Wireless tab just below the row of icons in the setup window
Make sure there is a check mark next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Jot down the exact name of the wireless network and the type of security that the device is using
Click Update to save any changes
Perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Express (AX) as follows:
Power down the AX for a few minutes
Hold in the reset button and keep holding it in another 10-12 seconds as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button and allow 40-45 seconds for the AX to restart to a slow, blinking amber state
Connect an Ethernet cable from your computer to the AX
Open AirPort Utility and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab below the icons to assign a name to the AX, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click on the Wireless tab and adjust your settings as follows:
Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Exact same name as your AEBS wireless network
Enter a check mark next to Allow wireless clients
Wireless Security = Exact same setting as the AEBS network
Wireless Password = Same password as the AEBS network
    Confirm Password
Click Update to save settings.  Close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored and wait 40-45 seconds for a green light.
Unplug the AX and move it to a location that is approximately 1/2 the distance from the AEBS to the area that needs more wireless coverage.
If you are using a PC, as your post indicates, the Windows Firewall will often block the connection between AirPort Utility and the AEBS or AX, so you may need to check the firewall settings for "blocked" connections, or you may need to "allow" a connection in the firewall application.

  • How to install AirPort Extreme card in eMac?

I just recently acquired a 2005 G4 eMac (the top-of-the-line model with the SuperDrive and 160 GB hard drive), and I am trying to install an AirPort Extreme card into it. Apparently I think the instructions must differ from this one:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2596
Since this is for the older AirPort cards.
I pushed the card in all the way, logo facing downward, screwed in the antenna, etc., but the Mac still won't recognize it! What should I do to get it working?

Numerous eMac users who installed Airport Extreme cards in the past have brought up that the Extreme card is a very tight fit in the eMac Airport slot, especially compared to the original Airport card. Often, the card appears to be fully seated, but is actually some fraction of a millimeter out. After seating the card according to all the instructions, you have to push hard on the edge of the card to get it to really seat all the way, hard enough to just start to push the 50-lb eMac away from you (don't try this with the eMac on the very edge of the table or desk!). I ran into exactly that putting an Extreme card in my in-law's eMac, and I had already read other's warnings; that may give you some idea how firmly you really need to push the card once it feels as if it's seated.

  • Problems after installing Airport Extreme Update 2008-001

ever since I installed the Airport Extreme update 2008-001 my internet connection has been dropping and it's so frustrating. I normally wait and don't install updates immediately after they are released. I installed this one and now my internet connection keeps dropping.
    Anyone have any suggestions??

Same scenario here, though I'm running 10.4.9. on a Mac Pro. I've tried every known fix, but Safari still stalls every few minutes - taking upwards of a minute to continue loading whatever page I was browsing to.
Other apps, including Mail, Firefox, and Remote Desktop screen sharing aren't affected - I can ping away without issue while Safari is choking, and there is no unusual Safari CPU consumption in Activity Monitor

  • Airport extreme/hard drive problems

    Any advice appreciated...
Our airport extreme only intermittently recognizes our Lace hard drive and it's driving us crazy. We bought macbook, the airport, and hard drive at the same time (yes we abandoned the PC world) and had a friend hook it up. For two months everything worked fine and we even hooked our printer to the airport and printed wirelessly.
Then for no particular reason, the harddrive disappeared and we can no longer access it wirelessly. We can, however, plug the harddrive USB into the Macbook and we can use the harddrive perfectly. Also, interesting, if we open airport utility and click on "disks", the harddrive is there, but it doesn't show up on the desktop or Finder and we can't access it.
I've called Apple tech support numerous times (We bought the extra service, but sadly that didn't keep us from having to spend an extremely obnoxious time on hold. We thought Apples were supposed to easy. but that's another story..). So far, we did get the airport and Macbook to recognize the hard drive by simultaneously renaming the harddrive and unplugging the hard drive and Airport. That worked for exactly 18 hours. Then the harddrive disappeared again. I called tech support twice but after 45 minutes on hold each time, I lost my patience. (They make us hold for the first step, then hold again for the product specialists. Gee we sure are glad we spent extra for the extended service!)
Other interesting tidbits: We've never had a problem with wireless internet service and have always been able to wireless send jobs to the printer.
    Any ideas?
    Signed and thank you,
Not so sure switching to Apple was a good move.

This is the most acceptable solution I have come up with:
Either go to the DHCP tab under internet settings on the router and "reserve" IP numbers for any hardware that interacts with the drive or manually set IP numbers in your network instead of using DHCP. The problem occurs when an IP number to any computer connected to the drive changes unexpectedly. This would be whenever the DHCP lease renews if your computer is asleep when this happens. I have not had a single drive issue since I set this up.
If you need to access your drive from a remote location where you don't have control over how the network there operates, then avoid letting your computer sleep while it is connected to the drive.
I chose to manually assign an IP number to my desktop and also to remote base stations, however this is not so convenient for my laptop because it then wants to use the manual settings everywhere unless I set up another "location" which has to be manually changed. This is where reserving IP numbers under the DHCP tab was really useful. The laptops on my network are still getting their numbers from the DHCP server but the server knows to give each one the same number based on their MAC addresses.
If you take a look at the default settings for DHCP, you will notice that not all the available numbers are being assigned through the DHCP server. You can use numbers outside this range (other than x.x.x.255) for your manually assigned IP numbers and still have DHCP running for when guests come over to use your network.

  • Airport Extreme, 5Ghz connectivity problems and poor media streaming

    Hi,
I purchased an extreme from the apple store a little over a week ago, and before I send the device back I would like to solicit recommendations from this forum.
    Some information about the setup:
    - Single airport extreme (supplying wifi services for my non-wifi DSL router and a connected USB disk)
    - Airport Extreme Firmware: 7.4.2
    - iTunes: 9.0
    - OS: Snow Leopard (10.6.1), Leopard (10.5.8), Window Vista.
    - Harddrive: 2TB lacie, USB2.0 connection only
    - 2.4 and 5 Ghz broadcasting mode
    - The device is broadcasting on all supported protocols.
    - Multiple clients (various: apple, microsoft, fujitsu)
    - Small space, no major concrete/brick/stone walls, signal strength is 5 bars of goodness
    - Country: Spain (I know there were 5Ghz restrictions here a while ago, but the device broadcasts on 5Ghz and is therefore not crippled).
If anything else could be of use, let me know and I'll update this list.
    And now the problems:
    1) 5Ghz connections fail
When connecting over the 5Ghz freq my connectivity to the extreme and the services it is offering (internet, disk sharing) is intermittent, at best. Basically, it has not worked reliably since I took it out of the box. This is equal for both of my macbooks and a fujitsu laptop (all with n support).
I've tried switching channels to avoid congestion - I don't live in a wifi-heavy area, and there are no other likely sources of interference (e.g. microwaves, cordless phones).
My connections to mounted disks come and go, I have to re-authenticate, and so on.
A general scan of the environment with KisMac does not show any major interference from other wifi networks (only 2 others in range, one is wimax).
I've tried to do some wifi analysis to see if I can spot any frame/packet related issues. Some rudimentary analysis indicates that when the connection stops working on the 5Ghz channel my laptop continually sends request-to-send packets to the extreme, but does not receive a clear-to-send. This occurs after a-few-seconds to a-couple-of-minutes of connectivity - the connection initially 'works' (i.e. wifi packets are sent/received correctly and I can access the internet).
    2) Data access and media streaming from the connected USB drive is very poor
I've mostly had problems with itunes. I thought this might be related to the size of my library, but this shouldn't effect single track playing. Even enabling large buffering in itunes results in intermittent pauses and long track loading.
Note: this occurs over b/g connections; as stated already, n connections don't work. iTunes simply goes into a coma for while and then eventually fails. See above. Also, if I just stream from my macbook (i.e. HD connected via USB), it works flawlessly.
The extreme was running 7.4.2 - updated on first connection. It's now running 7.4.1, as I read on the forums that there were some perceived problems with 7.4.2 (although these perceptions may not be accurate.
    Concl(f)usion:
I believe I've ruled out the following:
    - Distance
    - Interference
    - Laptop related issues (the same problem occurs with 2 macbooks and a fujitsu laptop).
    - Latest firmware
    - Software (apps, OS, etc)
Which leaves me to ponder two possibilities:
    a) The extreme is damaged.
    b) The extreme is not a good product (surely this can't be so?!)
There is, of course, a c-possibility ... that the collective experience of the online community might be able to offer me an alternative path?
I would be very grateful if anyone could offer any suggestions, tips, tricks, spells or simply a hug before I contact apple to begin the process of explaining the issues and seeking some care.
    Many thanks in advance,
    Dave.

I have had the same problem. Really frusrtating, expecially since the reason I bought the airport was because of all the wireless congestion in my neigborhood with only 11 channels on the 2.4 GHz spectrum.
Bought my airport dual band about a week ago. It had the firware 7.4.2. After extensive searching, I found other with similar issues. Apparently the last stable firmware may be 7.3.8. I am on 7.4.0 and not having any issues any longer (only testing one day now).
This may solve your issue. Login to your airport and choose manual setup. on the summary page, find 'Version' 7.x" and click on the word 'version'. This will allow you to rollback your firmware. I went with 7.4. Depending on what options you need with airdisk, Time Capsule, rolling back may remove those options, so experiment. You can always go back to 7.4.1 or 7.4.2 from within the interface.
    Hope this helps.

  • DO NOT install Airport Extreme update 2008-4 if using usb disk with TM

I have Airport Extreme and a WD 1TB disk with two partitions connected to the Extreme. Other partition just for stuff and the other for Time Machine backup.
Today I installed Firmware update 7.3.2 and disaster struck. I noticed that Airport Extreme was reporting a disk problem. I disconnected the drive from Extreme and use the Disk utility to find out what is the matter. The partition used for backup needed repair, but couldn't be repaired. I had to format it.
The worst thing (besides losing all my TM backups): After I got the disk formatted, I checked TM. It wasn't possible to do Time Machine backups any more for a USB disk connected to Airport Extreme.
    Anyone else have the same?
I strongly recomend NOT to install the update if using Airport Extreme + USB disk for Time Machine.
I'm really dissapointed if this is an issue connected to the update 7.3.2.

    Hello
I'm having issues too wtih the drive connected to my airport extreme basestation but not the same kind.
Sometimes (5 time a day) the airport extreme doesn't respond anymore and it doesn't appear in the airport utility. Then every body is disconnected from internet (even if the light stil green...).
I have to reboot the basestation manualy.
I also have two partitions (datas and TM). I'ts very anoying th only solution i found right now is to unplug my drive...
Hope Apple will fix this ASAP ...
