Installed Debian Linux over my entire hdd. how to reinstall os x?

I installed Debian linux for ppc over my entire system using a usb drive. OS x is gone. How do I get it back? My internal optical drive doesn't work. I put the Tiger install cd that came with the computer into my second computer macbook in target mode. The linux system could read the disc, but I can't figure out how to boot from it. Any ideas? This will likely take some Linux know-how. The linux guys at the forum weren't any help. I think they were a little bitter that I wanted to switch back.

Fixed it. I just removed the internal hard drive disk and restored my Superduper disk image back onto my drive.

  • Trying to install Arch Linux on a HP-dv2000 laptop

I am able to start up from, the CD no problem. I get the Arch Linux menu. What I think is the problem is maybe a resolution issue because as I go to install it, the screen looks wonky and I can't see the command line properly. I know when I install Ubuntu for example, the installation screen looks off to one side. Only after installing the nvidia driver after successfully installing Ubuntu does the screen look the way it supposed to.
I think the same think is happening here when trying to install Arch Linux. Any suggestions on how I can resolve this? This is a big deal for me because for the first time, I think I am going to learn a ton of stuff about Arch Linux. I am willing to take the plunge following the beginner's guide along the way.
    Thanks for the help!!

ArchLinux is designed to run whether in VirtualBox or on a real machine.
If you have a TV connector plugged in it will chop some regular lines at the bottom to make up for the difference in TV resolution.
There are a couple of packages related to nvidia hardware, nouveau is one of them.  Just do a pacman -Ss nvidia for possibilities of things you might need to install.  Your nvidia hardware is a little newer, so probably nvidia is the package you'll need instead of nouveau.
Are you using X?  When you install the proper xf86-video-* driver it shouldn't have any problems with X.  If modesetting is turned off, then some resolutions may not be made available (especially in Gnome), so it is best to keep it turned on if at all possible (kernel default).

  • Debian linux on a mac mini mid 2010

hey guys, i'm trying to install debian linux on a mid 2010 mac mini i bought.
i seem to keep running into issues though.
i've been using the disc from http://wiki.debian.org/MacMiniIntel#mid-2010modelMacMini
most of the time the grub or lilo boot loaders won't install on the rare occasion they do install linux shows up in reFIT, i click to boot to it and it takes me to a screen saying it cannot find an OS.
    can anyone provide any help?
    thanks.

Mountain Lion Boot Camp no longer supports Windows XP, it would also only prepare the same physical disk you run the Boot Camp Utility from i.e. the Mountain Lion disk.
    See http://support.apple.com/kb/ht4818#3
I suggest you start off with the second drive formatted as a single HFS+ volume with a GUID partition scheme, then install Snow Leopard on it. Then boot with Snow Leopard and run its version of Boot Camp utility, when you tell it to prepare the (second) drive you can tell it to allocate the minimum to Snow Leopard and the maximum to Windows. Then you can install Windows XP.
Note: Boot Camp Utility was not included with Snow Leopard Server.

  • How to reinstall Lion from new MBP?

Hi guys. I just bought an Early 2011 MBP with OS X Lion pre-installed. I just want to ask how to reinstall Lion? Just in case I want to reinstall the OS. Thanks! If you could post different ways of doing it, the better.

OS X Lion includes a new feature called Lion Recovery that includes all of the tools you need to reinstall Lion, repair your disk, and even restore from a Time Machine backup without the need for optical discs.

    Mounesh.

    Hello!
I'm no good at Linux, there muste be better people coming along later, just two questions:
Doubt VIA (http://www.msi.com.tw/program/support/driver/dvr/spt_dvr_detail.php?UID=610&kind=1 ), have support for Linux? Check http://www.viaarena.com!
Everything is alright in BIOS, SATA enabled and so on?
You might also check the manufacturer of the hard disk for software and advice.

We need *a lot* more info than that. Could be something very simple, like the interface being up before starting wifi-menu (netctl doesn't like the interface being up, it'll only start correctly if the interface is down).
Or it could be something more. In which case, you'll need to start wpa_supplicant manually with debugging enabled:
    wpa_supplicant -i wlp18s0b1 -c <(wpa_passphrase MYSSID passphrase) -d
Once this says you're connected, open another terminal and start dhcpcd. Or, if wpa_supplicant doesn't manage to connect, post the *entire* output.
Edit: Ok, you posted more info as I was writing my post. Will look through that, maybe it contains something useful. If not, follow the instructions above.
Edit2: Nope, nothing about wireless in there, except that the driver loaded.
    It worked!!
I was looking into the logs and found an authentication failure...my password is very long so I made some mistakes while typing it.
So this is the solution all the way:
    SOLUTION:
    - No need to install or load any external drivers (all I used was already in the base installation)
    - DISABLE THE HIDDEN NETWORK OPTION IN THE ROUTER (thanks for the heads-up @Gusar)
    - run "# wifi-menu"
         or
           "# wpa_supplicant -i [interface] -c <(wpa_passphrase MYSSID passphrase) -d"
    - run "# dhcpcd [interface]"
    - Good to go!!
I'm sorry for the trouble guys, and like I imagined, it was really easy and now I see my newbiness hahaha ;D
    Thanks.

  • Installing Debian GNU/Linux on an iBook

This post is both a query for information and written to introduce people to the information served on the 'Internet Archive', a web server originally at the Presidio in San Francisco, which offers wonderful objects for download. One of its lesser-known features is the 'WaybackMachine': archives of 'every' webpage on the internet after 1995! The following hyperlink illustrates its use.
    http://web.archive.org/web/*sa_/http://people.debian.org/~branden/ibook/
Here it is used to receive instructions on how to install, on my 1993 iBook, combinations of MacOS9, MacOSX 10.2, and Debian GNU/Linux. GNU/Linux offers what MacOSX 10.2 doesn't, except for the easy conversion of DV tape camcorders to DVD (not suitable for a G3 Mac anyway).
'Mactracker' claims my iBook 800 MHz 32 VRAM laptop was made between April and October of 2003. (It also describes the hardware upgrades possible.) Because I use a different computer for burning DVDs, I hope to install Debian GNU/Linux only, which should offer a very fast and flexible OOUI computer.
I've also been given a 15" Aluminum G4 PowerBook (1.67 GHz) and use the appropriate web page for assistance. Here I need to install MacOS9 for my granddaughter's games, MacOSX 10.2 for my wife, and GNU/Linux for me.
Are there other sources people have used to help install GNU/Linux on an iBook? The GNOME desktop is very similar to Mac's Aqua: have people found Debian GNU/Linux a good choice for an iBook operating system? (The system should probably be installed in an ext3 partition, but Debian GNU/Linux reads & writes Apple's HFS+ natively.
    Thanks in advance!

  • Windows 98 won't install over Windows XP HDD

    Hello there!
I am trying to install Windows 98 over Windows XP. However, I am having problems to do with formatting process. It goes up to 20% but stops and has an error saying something to do with the HDD. it is 32 Gigabytes and it offers "large hard disk support"
    in the setup.
I can't boot up to XP anymore after the "formatting" of the HDD. Windows XP had a NTFS partition on it. When I realized that Windows 98 couldn't support NTFS, I tried to format with a downloadable Win xp recovery console (Basically a Win XP install
disk without the installation files.) But it said it can't find fmrt.exe (or .com.)
I don't know what to do now. Help Please!

  • How to install windows 7 over windows 8 HP 2000- 2b16NR

So, I purchased this laptop at a pawn shop a couple of years ago, and it has served me pretty well up until now.  After the latest windows update, something went terribly, terribly, wrong.  For some unknown reason I am now stuck with Windows 8.1 Evaluation with the license expired, which means it shuts itself down EVERY hour.  I'm done with this, I hate the Windows 8 interface anyway, now its time to go back to something I know and love. I've read up on a lot of these posts, and joined the forums only because I did not see another post that was in direct relation to my own model number.  If someone could please guide me through the process of installing Windows 7 from a disk, it would be ever so helpful.  If you could also post a link pointing me in the right direction for all the drivers specific to my computer, that would be awesome as well, since I'm no techie, and really don't know a whole lot about this sort of thing outside of basic knowledge. Thanks in advance for the help!

I got my hands on a bootable copy of Windows 7.  Everything loads up just fine until I make the settings to US English etc, and click install, when I do that I get this error message: "The product key does not match any of the Windows images availible for installation.  Enter a different product key." Which doesn't make any sense to me, because since I've had this computer everything has updated just fine, and worked great up until this stupid update to 8.1. That being said, when I go into other options and select 'Reset my PC' I get another error message: "Unable to reset your PC.  A required driver partition is missing."  I've seen on some other posts where having the drive partitioned in the right way (format I guess?) is another issue with installing Windows 7 over 8.  If this indeed another source of the problem, how do I go about fixing it?

Can I Install Windows 7 on my portable HDD from Mountain lion ? And how i need to do it?

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities
Because of a Microsoft restriction, Windows can't be installed on an external drive (there are workarounds, but you need Windows). Apart from that, Boot Camp only works with the hard drive where you have installed OS X, so you can't use it to install Windows on an external drive

    Before the install
Ensure your data (at least all Home folders) is backed up before you install. Hard disks can fail at any time so it is important to regularly backup to an external disk with Time Machine or a third party alternative. Inexperienced users should follow Apple's install advice but experienced users may prefer to do a clean install.
    OS numbers and names
    OS X 10.4.x - Tiger
    OS X 10.5.x - Leopard
    OS X 10.6.x - Snow Leopard
    OS X 10.7.x - Lion
    OS X 10.8.x - Mountain Lion

    Upgrade to Leopard
Those wishing to upgrade to Leopard should be aware that install disks can be expensive. Details: http://lowendmac.com/deals/best-os-x-leopard-prices.html Standard Leopard installers impose several hardware limitations including speed and RAM size but all these restrictions can be overcome. Google for details. Leopard works well at 500 MHz with 1 GB of RAM and many happy users have less than this.
    Upgrade beyond Leopard
OSs beyond OS X 10.5.8 require an Intel processor. If in doubt click the apple at the top left of your screen and select 'About this Mac'. This will give you your OS number. Then click 'More Info' to see which processor you have. If it says PowerPC you cannot upgrade to Snow Leopard and above. If you have an Intel Mac it is well worth upgrading to Snow Leopard now and then considering other options after that. You can buy Snow Leopard here: http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A

    Upgrade to Mountain Lion

    Important
Check that your Mac complies with any requirements.
If you are not in the US you should use the Change Country link at the bottom of Apple pages.
