Installed Leopard but didn't back up all files...please helpppp!

All my files have been deleted now that I've installed the new Leopard. I forgot one important file on my desktop however. Is there anyway to get it back?
thanx

You could try the free demo of DataRescuell .
If the demo "sees" your stuff, you can purchase the full version to rescue the bigger files.
If you chose the *Zero Out* option I am afraid you will have no luck.

About 3 years old...pretty dated now I guess.  Am thinking I may just need to have it upgraded by a Mac tech.
For what the Apple Store's charge you can buy almost buy a new computer.
Just for giggles I brought my old laptop in for a drive upgrade and asked, they wanted $600 for a drive that only cost $120 at the time and it was a slow 5,400 RPM drive. The new Mac's of a similar make were going for $1000.
I did the drive replacement myself, got a faster drive of better quality for $300 instead.
Then another time I asked for a RAM upgrade from 4GB to 8GB, they wanted to charge $400 + $35 for the labor.
The same RAM is on Crucial.com for $90 and all I need is a 00 micro phillips screwdriver.
So you see what's going on here.
I think what you should do, if your out of warranty/AppleCare, is to call up the local PC tech guy who also does Mac's and have them fix you right up.
They can offer more personalized care which you need. Clone your old drive to the new and everything.
With Apple they are overworked at the Genius Bar and just place roadblocks so you buy a new machine instead.
For instance, all new iMac's now have proprietary drive software installed on the hard drives for heat monitoring. So now the only choice a user has is to bring their iMac into a Apple Store for a very expensive drive upgrade, which a person then decides the money is better spent buying a new machine.

When you restore from a Time Machine back up you can pick and chose what is restored. It is not an all or nothing process. Nor do you have to do the partial restores all at the same time. If days after the first partial restore you find something else you want you can restore just that.

i installed win 7 on my mac book, and the sound driver was installed successfully, but i don't hear any sound, please help

Is the volume muted? Click on the volume icon in the system tray to see if it shows as muted. If that's the case, I know of a workaround to fix this because if you unmute the speakers now, the condition will come back when you reboot your computer. I don't know the exact steps off the top of my head at the moment as I'm not in front of my machine. Check this first and reply if muting was the problem and I will detail the steps needed to fix the problem.

  • I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes deletes all data

I recently lost my windows laptop due to a virus. I had backed up all files onto a drive(files only). However no itunes playlists. i have all my playlists on my iphone and pics etc however when im trying to sync to my new computer itunes wants to  deletes all data off of my iphone so i click cancel
i want to update to iOS 5 and still have itunes be able to copy my playlists from my iphone. for free. why does apple provide a recovery from iphone option?

If you have a backup, restore the ENTIRE iTunes folder to the computer.  This restores the library and device association files.  If for some reason you chose to only back up the media and not the entire iTunes folder, then the only option is to let iTunes wipe the drive and re-sync.

That file might have moved to a different location on the server. I think you'll need to check with RefWorks support or your local IT department on why the install page links do not work.

  • In limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard - stupidly didn't back up

I've got an old-school black MacBook, about four years old now. I never cared enough to upgrade it to Snow Leopard, but now I want Lion. So, I borrowed my parents' five-license Snow Leopard install disc and started off on the journey to upgrade to Snow Leopard, download the App Store update, then download and install Lion. I didn't get far.
First, let me say that I didn't back up my hard drive. Like an idiot. Yes, I know it was stupid, so there's no need to say anything. My previous installs (a few clean re-installs) have gone without a hitch, so I figured I'd trust Apple and just run the installation without backing up. Dumb.
The Snow Leopard installation started fine, but was interrupted when the installer said the install failed. Restart, try again. Booting from the install DVD, things seemed to be going fine a second time around -- picked my language, got to the install set-up screen, picked Macintosh HD as my installation drive. And then things stopped working. The installer said my HD could not be written to and that it needed repair. So I went to Disk Utility to try that. Repair Disk wasn't available, so I clicked Verify Disk. That got interrupted when it said the disk needed to be repaired, after which the Repair Disk button was clickable. Tried to repair, but apparently my HD is screwed beyond the capabilities of Disk Utility.
I tried to reboot the MacBook from the HD, which Disk Utility said still had Leopard running on it. The computer wouldn't boot up. Safe Boot didn't work. So, without any other real options, I thought I'd try my luck by just trying the install again. Booted up from the install DVD, and ran into the same issues. Didn't magically fix itself, of course. So my MacBook is stuck in limbo between Leopard and Snow Leopard, won't boot from the HD and won't let me repair the disk when booted from the DVD. What do I do?
I plan to try a couple third-party disk-utility programs tomorrow (8/25/11) to recover the files on my HD. There's not much I care about on there (just some iPhone photos and my resume, really), so doing a clean wipe of the HD and installing Snow Leopard is an option. But I'd of course rather be able to recover my personal files. Is this possible at this point?
Another question I have regarding a clean wipe: If I end up having to clean off the HD and lose all my data, I'll lose the iTunes configuration for my iPhone. Will iTunes be able to import my apps and settings from my phone if I plug it in?
    Thank you very much.

  • Installed Leopard but Hard drive is still Tiger

I had to wipe my drive on my 2006 MacBook Pro. I reinstalled Leopard but now the hard drive says it's Tiger. What happened? How do I fix?

Ok, Apple Support told me to reinstall OS X. They told me I would loose all my settings as I was going to set the machine back to the original factory setting of the base OS X installation disk. It was recommended that I back up all my files on the external hard drive, which I did.
This is a good start at understanding what you did, but it would be clearer if you said exactly what you did to "set the machine back to the original factory setting." IOW, which install option did you choose, what disk did you use (a gray system-specific disk or black retail disk & the version of the OS it installs), if you used Disk Utility run from the installer disk to erase or partition the drive before the installation, & if you installed only the Apple software or if you installed anything (at all) from a third party (non-Apple) vendor at any point in the process. Did you use Software Update to update the OS to 10.5.6? Did you reenter the user & network settings by manually typing them or with a migration assistant or something like that?
Was your backup made with Time Machine or in some other way?
Earlier in this topic you mentioned other problems besides connectivity. Do you still have them as well? When you did have them, were you also experiencing the connectivity problem?
Basically, there are two possibilities: the issue is software or hardware related. It is unlikely that the 10.5.6 update itself is the problem; if it were, the problem would not be present when you first installed the OS (however you did it) before updating the OS to 10.5.6. Thus, we must be certain that you first installed some 'factory fresh' version of Leopard less than 10.5.6 & did in fact still see the connectivity problem before doing anything else.
Again, let me emphasize the importance of your telling us exactly what you did, not what Apple said to do or any interpretation of what it was similar or equivalent to.

How can I retrieve imessages after I restored my iphone 4 to factory setting and didn't back up prior to restore?

If you synch your phone to your computer via itunes,it performs a backup prior to synching. You can check by luanching itunes select preferences>devices, all backups should be shown there. If in fact there is a backup of your phone listed then do a restore of that back up.

    Why not?
how can i upload the information from my device?
iTunes doesn't provide the ability to upload media from the iPhone, except for iTunes Purchases (File > Transfer purchases...)
That's why its very important to maintain regular backups of your iTunes Library.
Google for "ipod copy" to find a third-party application which may help you rescue some of it.
