Installed New Ram

I just installed 4GB's worth of new Ram on my MacPro at the Office. I originally had two 512MBs for a total of 1gb. I bought (2) 2GB sticks and installed them myself. They work great, but I was wondering if my computer would run faster if I moved the 2GB's where the 512's are and moved the 512's to the back.
I didn't notice much difference in rendering time in FCP 5.1. The system profiler does recognize the ram, telling me I have 5GBs of ram.
I'm running dual 2.66ghz and Tiger 10.4.10

Thanks a lot for the response. I'm not very tech savvy.. so if this helps any, here it how my ram is aligned per apple report:
Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 1, 512 MB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 2, 512 MB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 3, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
Memory Module: DIMM Riser A/DIMM 4, 2 GB, DDR2 FB-DIMM, 667 MHz
Are they in the correct risers? Or if I moved the (2) 2GBS from 3&4, to, 1&2, then moved the 512's to risers 3&4, would I see a speed difference?
Thanks again.. sorry if I seem stupid.

  • Installed new RAM now computer wont start up

I just installed 2GB of RAM in my iMac and removed the 512mb card it had originally.when i pressed the power button it beeps fast a few time then the fan starts working really fast. The screen doesnt turn on only the sleep light blinks as the fan runs. I replaced one of the new cards with the original 512mb card and it starts but when i check the memory the slot where the new 1GB card appears "empty" why could this be? did i install incorrectly?

When you install new RAM you have to push much harder than you think you should. You won't damage the RAM, but you have t give a mighty push to seat it, make sure you hear a click.

  • 4 hrs later - Computer shut down after installing new RAM (mid 2007 Imac)

Mid 2007 imac and I installed new Ram. It worked for 4 hrs then the Imac shutdown. The pressed power button but no power. Unplugged and replugged the power cord and 3 beeps sounded. I am wondering if it worked for 4 hrs or so, then why did it would it fail 4 hrs later?
I am running the correct ram because in system profiler under memory - it said that everything was ok.
    Any ideas?

or maybe the back tray wasn't tight enough?
I re-installed it now and so far so good.... I pressed tight and in an upwards motion. We'll see what happens

  • Checking & installing new RAM

    Hi,
    I have a Pavilion dv7 product number VG420AV notebook with 4 GB DDR3 system memory (2 DIMM).
I am wanting to upgrade the memory to 8 GB.
Hp told me to buy a 4GB, 1600Mhz, PC3-12800 memory module (SHARED).
I am not sure if I need one stick or two.
How do I check to see if I have an avilable slot to install new RAM ,& how do I install new RAM in my notebook?
    Thanks fo the help.

That is a dv7t-3100 model. 2 ways to find out about the RAM. 1. Download and install CPU-Z and look at the memory tab; or, 2. Just pull the back cover off and look.
    Here is the Service Manual:
    Manual
    Page 4-17
And you do say you have 2 DIMM(s) which is all the slots available so to upgrade you are going to have to remove and replace existing memory.

  • Installed new ram, computer wont start up

I installed 1gb of hynix ram. I tried setting it in different ways, but each time when i start up the computer it doesnt even get to the chime sound, the screen doesnt come on, my fan just runs loud and fast and nothing happens, but it starts up fine with out the ram. is there any hope of installing this ram?

Generally if your computer won't start up after you have installed new RAM, either you have purchased the wrong type of RAM, or it is a bad module.
As long as you are able to start up normally after removing the new RAM, and it is supported, it might just be a bad module. Contact Hynix to arrange for a replacement.

  • Mac crashes regularly after installing new RAM

My laptop crashes at least once a day ever since installing new RAM. It seems to be triggered by quitting programs, usually Firefox, Logic or Spotify. There was nothing else connected to the Mac that brought about the latest crash but I do use an Mbox 2 on a regular basis.
Below is the last crash report and also the RAM profile. It's Kingston brand if that means anything.

It's almost impossible to trace back the panic report to a specific cause, but it's highly suspicious that you started experiencing problems after installing new RAM.
It's also strange that your RAM has no stated VendorID, Part Number or Serial Number.
I would return this memory poste haste.
Alternatively, if the DIMMs are from Kingston's ValueRAM range, just dump them in the garbage because that's where they belong. While you're there, look for any other RAM that someone else has thrown away - chances are its ValueRAM, too (hint: I have never seen a single ValueRAM DIMM work in any of my systems, so I avoid them like the plague - shame, since Kingston used to have such a good reputation).

  • Help! Installed new RAM and now screen isn't coming on!

    Hi
I'm in a bit of a mess and would be grateful for any help with this one:
I have a Powerbook G3 500mhz Pismo that currently has a 512mb card in the top slot (Kingston PB100/512) that I installed about two years ago with no problems and an original 128mb in the bottom. At Christmas I bought another 512mb for the bottom slot – (Kingston KTA-PBG4/512 - This one is smaller than the first but it was the one reccomended by Kingston on their website for the Pismo).
I have just got round to installing it after backing up my system and I have good instructions on how to do it (I have replaced the HD two years previous with no problems)
Firstly I have to mention that just before I changed the RAM the laptop fell from a small stool (about 1.5feet high) onto carpet due to the unbalancing effect of taking out the battery/CD ROM. It landed on its edge where the power socket is. I immediately put it back together and turned it on to make sure it was ok - it came on fine and there were no problems visually, mechanically or otherwise, so I carried on with the installation.
I installed the new 512mb card in the bottom slot and re-assembled but when I turned it on the screen remained black! From the computer itself, however, it sounded as if it had started up ok – there was the chime and the familiar sound of the hard drive at start up.
To troubleshoot I removed the new RAM card and put back the old RAM as it was – this made no difference. I checked to see if the processor board was firmly in place or if I had dislodged any connectors by mistake within the area that I had worked but this made no difference. I also tried to re-set the parameter RAM and this made no difference.
Because the laptop took a small knock prior to installation, I am not sure if that has caused something to come loose or damage of some kind but as I mentioned I did test it immediately and it worked, so it’s either a delayed reaction or the new RAM card has caused it. – (As mentioned there is a difference between the two 512 cards in both name and size but the smaller size of the newer one I assume just reflects advancement in technology and it was reccomended by Kingston!)
If anybody has any advice on this I would be very grateful (and also, if anybody can point me in the direction of instructions on how to take the pismo apart to get to the connections to the screen that would be great – in case I have to do it)
    Many Thanks Barry
    PowerBook G3500mhz   Mac OS X (10.3.9)

    SpottyFox,
It sounds like you are properly seating the CPU card from your description, so I don't believe that is your problem. I am glad you checked the pins (I should have mentioned that as the next step if the reseating did not help). I cannot answer whether anything was damaged from your description of the pins; I have read where others have realigned bent pins with success so maybe your mileage will vary.
Start up your Pismo, then shine a flashlight directly into the display; if you can see data being written to the display, just the backlight is refusing to light. If this is the case, check the inverter board connections. The inverter is under the clutch cover and powers the fluorescent backlight in the display. Enlarge the bottom picture in this link to see the inverter:
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/Mac/PowerBook-G3-Pismo/Inverter-Page-10-Inverter
Check connections at each end of the inverter. Disassembly is not as extensive as this guide suggests. Support the back of the display, then remove the main battery, optical drive, lay the keyboard on its face on the palm rest, heat shield, and clutch cover...that's it.
    http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/6.0.0.html
You might also connect the Pismo to an external display; failure here would suggest a more serious problem.

  • Installed new Ram = 3 Beeps

Hello! I wanted to max out my iMac (7,1) with RAM so I bought a couple new chips from Other World Computing. It came yesterday and I went home all excited to install it. I did, and on startup all I get is three beeps repeating endlessly. I opened the slot back up and made sure they were seated well and they were. Same thing. Put the old RAM back in and it started fine. Gah! How disappointing and frustrating!
Here is the RAM I got:
    2GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
    4GB PC5300 DDR2 667MHz 200 Pin SO-DIMM
Any ideas would be much appreciated!

Through an a separate email inquire with OWC, I got this response:
+The 3 beeps from your Mac indicate it doesn't see any memory. This is not uncommon as Apple's RAM is a slight bit thinner than third-party modules, and as such, our modules need an a bit extra pressure to fully seat them into their rather tight socket.+
+See if the modules can go another 1/8th inch (3mm) into the socket.+
I'm pretty sure I seated the new RAM properly, but I'll make sure to check that as well.

  • Installed new Ram & 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.

I have mac book pro from 2006 (1.83ghz)  I recently installed 2 new 1G ram chips from crucial for a total ram of 2G. I am running osx 10.6. and 10 minutes after startup the computer keeps freezing.  Could it be that 10.6 is too much for the processor?

10.6 is not "too much for" your MBP. You may have gotten a faulty RAM module — it happens.
Start your machine up while holding down the D key, and when Apple Hardware Test appears, select the Extended Test. Run the extended test at least once all the way through, if you can, and post back with the exact text of any error message it reports.
If the test can't be completed, you definitely have a hardware problem, and the first suspect is the new RAM. In that case, reinstall the RAM that originally came in your machine and run the extended test again. If it is completed without errors this time, the Crucial RAM is clearly at fault and should be exchanged.

  • Installing new RAM and need help!

Hello everyone, I have this exact same computer model found here: http://wow-rebates.com/lenovo-3000-k100-57068352-intel-desktop-pc/
This means that I have 4 slots of RAM, but 3 are currently being used by 1 GB sticks of DDR2 PC2-5300 @ 667. I just bought a stick of RAM today that is exactly the same as the other 3 (its a 1 GB stick of DDR2 667). However, after I installed it, it freezes at the first screen where it says "lenovo" in big white letters. It doesn't go any further than that, which is odd.
Additionally, when using my new RAM stick with only 2 of the old ones (total 3 GB) it works fine, but whenever 4GB of RAM is in my computer it just isn't working properly. What might be causing my computer not being able to handle 4GB? Is there a dual channel option I have to enable or something? Help will be VERY much appreciated! =)

Hummm, did you get into the Bios screen and check to see if the 4th gig is runnin? will pop up as 4 gigs in Memory. If not move the sticks around, if not get a new stick. If it show in bios then it's working.
In Vista though you only get 3gigs max unless you run 64bit.
I am using Kingston for $27   working fine.

    Hello Malith Ratnayake,
After changing the old RAM by the new one, this issue occurs?
If the issue doesn’t occur when you change back to use old ram, I think it is the RAM hardware issue.
Please contact the hardware manufacturer for better support.

  • Macbook pro shutting down after I installed new RAM

I recently installed 8 GB of new RAM (purchased from Best buy). and a few times since I did that (yesterday morning),  my laptop has shut down and a grey screen has popped up with something saying  "Your computer has shut down because of a problem, please wait a few minutes for it to restart"  Or something like that.
I've installed RAM before and this was super easy and quick.  The machine says both RAM sticks are "OK" when I go to the system report.   Yet I cant help but think thats the problem.
Does anyone know what that could be?   The ONLY thing I am a tad unsure of, is the little "pop" or "click" the sticks should make when you put them in.  I don't remember hearing that.
Any ideas?  I really don't want to have to go back to my standard 4 gigs or RAM.
    system specs.
    2.8 C2D Mid 2009 Macbook Pro,

Either your RAM is no good, of poor quality, the wrong specs or it's not installed correctly or it got subjected to static electricity when you put it in.
Best Buy isn't as Mac centric, thus the quality of RAM that Mac's require may not be there.
You should have purchased from Crucial.com or Other World Computing or similar that tests the RAM to make sure it works the first time you put it in, as it costs everyone money to ship bad RAM back and forth.
I put in 16GB a couple of days ago, took five minutes and it works perfectly.
Nothing like top tier RAM for a top of the line machine, especially with all those tiny, easy to lose screws Apple uses.

  • MacBook won't even turn on after installing new ram

I am using the 2010 MacBook (white 13 inch) I bought ram (two 2gb modules) and was going to install it. I removed my Original ram, but accidentally powered it on it the process (no ram was inside). I got a longed beep. I held the power button and shut it off. I then put the ram back in and it won't turn on. I don't hear any parts moving, no power, nothing. Yes I put the ram in right, an it's tight as can be. Its pushed in well. Help! I never put the new ram in!

The new ram doesn't fit. The laptop won't turn on with old ram. It worked before I removed it now it doesn't. It's I'm there tight so don't tell me to put it in with pressure because I did

  • Installing New Ram...

    Hey all,
I am considering buying a 1gig stick of ram to take my iMac G5 up to 1.5 gig of ram to hopefully run WoW better with my tiny little radeon 9600...not the x600.
Anyways I was wondering how you install the ram in the computer. I have done it on a PC before and am assuming this is no different, but where the heck do I put it in?
Should I just have the mac people do it, lol it was simple enough for Pc's but who knows.
    Any directions/pictures to help?
    Thanks

Adding RAM can not slow you down, can only speed you up. If your iMac seems to bog down, run the Repair Permissions procedure first, second boot from Tiger install disc and run Repair Disk procedure, third boot from Apple Hardware Test and run extended test. It really shouldn't take all that to get it back up to its new speed, but those or one of them should definitely do the trick.
Yes, you will definitely notice the gaming improvement, might notice a web page improvement, will definitely improve downloads such as software updates, etc.

  • Installing new RAM: Compatible with existing RAM?

I've just ordered 8G of memory, 4 lots of 2G. I have 2x1G on board already. Will I need to uninstall the original RAM, or will it work happily with the new RAM?
Secondly, I see a warning in the Apple installation document that I need to remove the battery to get at the memory slots, and that replacing the battery incorrectly could cause an explosion. Seriously? I'm nervous enough just installing the RAM. I could do without explosions.

Depends on the manufacturer to be honest. I have 2GB of original RAM in my system with 10GB of OWC and they play happily together. I suppose it still holds true that you "get what you pay for" - they're not the cheapest, but I didn't break the bank.

I honestly did not see that warning on my 2008 Mac Pro and simply powered down, unplugged the power cord, took both memory risers out and installed the modules per the instructions of OWC (Macsales.com) - Kappy has posted those for you.
I've had them in for a couple of months now and couldn't be happier. I would suggest following Apple's instructions though, it could prevent serious damage to internal components caused by electrostatic shock.
