Installed new superdrive= CD boot problem

I just installed the Pioneer 110 superdrive, and had read previously to set the superdrive as the master and the HD as the slave, which is what I did. Everything works great except when using a boot disk. If there is a boot disk in the drive when I restart, it will boot off the CD without holding down the C key. Does this mean that the HD needs to be the master or could something else be wrong?

The DVD and HD are on the same cable in the G4 iMac... one has to be the master and one the slave. From the factory the HD was the master and the CD drive the slave, but on previous advice I reversed that when I installed the new DVD drive. I think that must have been bad advice but I will wait to hear from others before opening up the machine again, as the boot problem is the only glitch.
When I bought it my Mac dealer told me that PatchBurn is not needed with this drive and that appears to be the case... all the Apple software I have works natively with this drive... no patch necessary.

• Installed new superdrive now Find is broke...?

It may be mutually exclusive, but I just installed a new Superdrive (Pioneer 111D) and now Find (Command-F) doesn't seem to work. When I enter some type into the search field and press return/enter the little watch in the lower right corner just spins, nothing in the results area. I've another partition with the same OS and the Find doesn't work there either.
I'd appreciate any advice
Geoff

The Find problem does appear to wholly unrelated to your new SuperDrive installed, based on what you reported here and my response therein.
Good luck!

• Fresh install new SSD and boot from USB problem.

Hi!

I have a HP pavilion g6 -2031so that i just wanted to change the HD to a SSD. I got the filés setup on a USB stick using the Windows tool.

I cant really enter bios properly. I press Esc on start, and enter bios. BUT i can barely change anything! So The installation won't even start, it's just a blinking underline in the corner.

Hello Ericwei, welcome to the HP Forums.
I see that you're trying to setup a newly installed SSD and install Windows on it with your recovery flash driver. I will try to assist you with this.
It seems like you've encountered and issue getting into the BIOS to set the booth order?
When you try entering the BIOS, what difficulties are you having? Do you get any error messages?
You do mention that you're able to enter the BIOS but you can't do anything. Could you clarify what you mean by this. Are things greyed out? are you getting errors? Is nothing happening when your trying to navigate the BIOS?
You should be able to navigate in the BIOS to setup the Boot Order, to have the first be the usb flash drive. If that's done, then upon restart the notebook should be booting from there.
If this is set and it is not booting from the flash drive, what is it doing? Are you getting errors?
Please reply with as much detail as you can on the issue, with answer to the questions. This will allow me to assess the issue for you and provide further steps.
Thank you for posting on the HP Forums.

• After installing new update...problem

which includes prokit and several updates for ilife 08 via the automatic updater, my internet absolutely creeps compared to how it used to run. I've had my macbook pro for a couple of months now and have had no problems until this last update. I searched the forums for remedies but since I'm relatively new to macs, a lot of the terms and remedies are a bit foreign to me, so I apologize if other posts covered the same topic. Any suggestions on reverting the computer to settings prior to the update or another workaround. The net is slow on both Safari and Firefox. It's like the browser is hung for 7 to 10 seconds then will load the page. Thanks in advance for help.

BDAqua-
So new/old set of Safari problems has cropped up. I just recently installed Leopard with corresponding updates, also partitioned some space for Windows that I need to run.
Same internet "hang" problem is happening. The page loads but hangs for 10 seconds before doing so. I've looked in the input folders but nothing is there. Any other thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks.

• How to install new superdrive dvd burner

my superedrive pioneer burner, er, burned out. Right now I have a Lacie external burner but it is a hassle to use vs the ease of superdrive with iTunes. I can get a new pioneer drive on ebay for $70 for my imac. Is this something that a "handy with tools" person can replace himself? Is there a site on Apple that tells of parts theat can be owner installed?

That's Pioneer's DVR-116D. I have personal experience with them and they definitely work. To answer your question: if it doesn't work, you're doing something wrong. Take for example the reviewer who said it didn't work with his G5. This is most likely because he didn't install Patchburn, which is very important on older systems. If this is going to be a DIY project, please consider the following:
• iMac G4s are not friendly towards take-apart. Space inside is tight and unforgiving. Get a good manual, buy some thermal grease, and take your time. Better yet, get someone pro to put it in.
• You will have to remove the front "lip" and "bezel" from the drive, or else the tray will be to fat to fit inside the cage or eject.
• When removing your dud drive from the iMac, check to see if it's set to Master, Slave, or Cable Select. Set the new drive to the same.

• Installing second hard drive - boot problem

I have a Maxtor SATA hard drive that I had installed in my G5. It is use only for client project files - no operating system or programs have ever been installed on this drive. It worked great in my G5. I recently upgraded to an Intel Mac Pro and so I pulled the drive and installed it. With the drive installed it won't even boot. All it does is keep repeating the start-up chime. I tried it in several of the open bays and it did the same thing every time. When I pull it back out, it boots without a problem and when I put it back in the G5 it is recognized without a problem. Any thoughts of what could be the problem and solution? I really need to get this back, as I mentioned it contains all my client projects.
Thanks.

Disk Utility - Erase (drive, not volume) and make sure it is now GPT/GUID and not old Apple Partition Table format.
Even though it is data only, there can and are some problems (the older it was last formatted the more so perhaps).
Just pull the data off if needed. Handy to have a FW drive case for SATA laying around.
Migrating OS and apps from G5 to Intel is full of potential pitfalls.
Depending on the drive age, size, performance, I'd probably go for a WD Caviar 640GB $75 to transfer files onto, and then wipe the Maxtor and use it for an emergency backup drive off which you can run Disk Warrior and such.

• Need instructions for installing new "superdrive"

Just bought a superdrive, as recommended by folks here. It's a Pioneer DVR-116DBK and it came with generic instructions. But when I swing down the side door on my Mac, I'm clueless about what I need to do to get the old weird burner out and put the new one in.

Look at the video link on this page (last line G4 AGP) http://eshop.macsales.com/tech_center/installation.cfm
Here's the text from the G4 Service Manual
Step 1
1. From inside the chassis, behind the front panel, push the two bezel tabs forward to release the drive bezel from the front panel.
2. Disconnect the bezel from the hinges on the front left side and remove the bezel from the computer.
Step 2 Before you begin, do the following: • Open the side access panel. • Remove the CD-ROM/ DVD-ROM/DVD-RAM/Zip drive bezel.
Step 3
1. Remove the two screws on the drive carrier. (on front) Note: You remove the drive carrier from the computer with the drives attached to the carrier.
Step 4
2. From inside the chassis, push the drive carrier forward about 1 inch.
3. Disconnect the following cables from the back of the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or DVD-RAM drive: •power cable (P7) •IDE data cable •Power Mac G4 (PCI Graphics): audio cable
4. Disconnect the following cables from the back of the Zip drive (if present): •power cable (P6) •IDE data cable
Step 5
5. Continue sliding the drive carrier out of the computer. Important: The drive carrier may be difficult to push forward due to the EMI gasket and tape located on the underside of the carrier (directly below the Zip drive).
6. When the carrier is out of the computer, remove the EMI shield from the back of the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or DVD-RAM drive.
Step 6
Note: Perform the following procedure if you are replacing the CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-RAM, or Zip drive.
7. Using a Phillips screwdriver, remove the drive carrier mounting screws.
8. Slide the drive(s) out of the carrier. Replacement Note: The DVD-RAM drive is not as tall as the CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives. Before screwing the DVD-RAM drive back into the carrier, lift the back of the drive slightly so that the drive is flush against the carrier. Replacement Note: When inserting the drive carrier into the computer, make sure the carrier tab slides into the hole on the stationary drive shelf.
deeper, *don't post you Mac's serial number* (or email address). A forum moderator will remove it soon.
Good luck on the upgrade.

can you try with another Display manager like lightdm see if that works ?
I might try that, though now that I finally have my PC back I have some other work that takes priority for a few days. :-)
Malkymder wrote:And yes xorg.conf should be replaced with /etc/xorg.conf.d/20-nvidia.conf instead
I'm using `nvidia-xconfig` to generate that file (I haven't had to tinker with it manually for years now).
The tool generates this 'deprecated' file. Should I just move its exact content to the new location?

• New logic board, still boot problems with Turbo Fans

I bought a 2Ghz dual G5 from a guy on craigslist and he told me that the Geniuses at the Apple Store said it had a bad logic board. So I bought a brand new logic board from DVwarehouse.com, and installed it along with a new set of matched RAM from Crucial, a new HD, new PRAM battery, new video card and a new superdrive. The only thing original are the processors and power supply (and fans, of course).
When I start it up, after the chime it quickly goes into "turbo-fan mode", which I have read that means the Op Sys didn't load correctly. Many restarts later, I was able to reset the nvram in the Open Firmware, but that didn't seem to help at all. I also pressed the SMU button (according to Apple's directions), but that didn't help much either.
I've had a few successful boots, but always with the fans going full blast. I though that once I got Leopard loaded onto the HD, then it would calm down with a software update. But before I ever get that far, the G5 hangs. Sometimes the G5 will boot and access the HD but hangs soon after. Sometimes I can get it to boot off the Leopard DVD. But most of the time it just boots and sits there slowly spinning up the fans into turbo mode.
The few times it has booted to access the HD or DVD, the fans go turbo right away. Other times it will boot with a chime, but then it won't access the HD or DVD and I get noting on the display.
I should say that this behavior is almost identical to how it was acting before I replaced the logic board. But how can that be? It should be a new computer, unless the problem is in the CPUs. Is that very likely? How would I find out if the CPUs are bad?
I've been reading alot about the problems I'm having with this G5 and what I've been having seems to be very common. But I've run out of fixes. Is there anything I can do to fix this machine or is it just money down the drain?

my iMac 20" G5 experience since December 2004, even though I love this machine,it has gone through 3 power supply (661-3350) replacements and 3 logic board replacement since late 2004. Pretty crazy for a single machine but I still love it. The last logic board replacement did NOT fix my boot up problem, as I expected, and the genius finally agreed to replace the power supply and that fixed it. SO: My recommendation to you is "replaced the power supply" here is one place you can get one: http://www.dvwarehouse.com/Power-supply-180W-for-iMac-G5-20--100v-661-3350---614 -0353-----NEW-p-25613.html

• Problems installing new hard drive - pt. 2

Hi there,
I have been using a G4 for years for my music (Pro Tools). I had the standard 29GB hard drive, and I had added a second 40GB drive, and those worked well for me for years.
A few weeks ago, the system started acting up, and it seemed like the 29GB hard drive was shot. So, I got a new one (320GB) and installed it, setting it as Master and keeping the old 40GB one as Slave.
I tried to install both OS9 and OSX on the new drive, but had problems (as chronicled in this previous thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2478863&start=0&tstart=0).
After trying a number of things, I finally got 10.3 loaded and seemingly working. Then, I realized my old Pro Tools disc needed OS9/Classic to load, so I looked around for info on if I could load OS9 without disturbing my 10.3. I tried booting to the old OS9 disc -- I didn't actually do anything, like initialize, reinstall, or anything, just looked around to see if it was possible -- and now the 10.3 isn't working either.
Neither the OSX installer, the OSX Disk Utility, or the OS9 Disk Utility seems to "see" the new drive now.
Any thoughts/theories/suggestions on what it might be? Just before the 10.3 installed successfully, I had opened the computer and pressed the IDE cable connections down, just to make sure they were secure. I don't know if that did anything, but it might have.
Now that I'm having problems again, I have of course checked those IDE cable connections again, but the computer still doesn't "see" the drive.
I will remain calm...

Some earlier PowerPC Macs need to have OS X installed on the first 8 GB of the HDD. Mac OS X: Disk Appears Dimmed (or "Grayed Out") in the Installer. I am not sure if that is the case with your computer, but it might be a factor.
On the other hand, if you previously had both OS 9 and OS X installed on the HDD without an 8 GB partition the issue may be elsewhere.
Try this:
Format and Install OS 9
This process will completely erase everything on your Hard Disk Drive. Be sure to Backup your User Folder and all third party apps you can't afford to lose
• Boot from your OS 9 install CD holding down C key.
• Go to Drive Setup and reformat your drive as Mac OS Extended (HFS+)
• Reinstall OS 9
• Update to 9.2.2: Mac OS 9: Available Updates
• Update your firmware
Install Panther OS X 10.3.9
• Boot from the 10.3.x install CD 1
• Go to Installer Menu and open Disk Utility
• (Optional)Go to File menu and Repair OS 9 Permissions!
• Quit Disk Utility.
• Launch Installer
• Select Destination disk for installation
• Click Options
• Select Installation Option Archive and Install
• (Optional) Preserve Users and Network Settings
• Choose to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer drivers.
• Check box to install BSD Subsystems (Panther & earlier).
• Install Mac OS X 10.3.x
• Restart and Repair permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!
• Download and apply the 10.3.9 Combo Update
• Restart and Repair Disk Permissions as previously!
• Run Software Update and apply all updates available
• Repair Disk Permissions (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility)!

I have problem with syncing in itunes and it stared since i installed new version of itunes.it stuck in backup step for houres.what shud i do?

So, in iTunes, when you look at the shuffle's content (in the sidebar) and click on the playlist under the shuffle, over to the right, the songs are in your desired order, correct? Where do you look, or what do you do, that indicates the playlists are in alphabetical order? Are you saying that when you play the songs while using the shuffle, they play in alphabetical order?
If so, when you listen to the songs on the shuffle, are you using the playlist, or are you using the All Songs list? If you are in the default All Songs list, with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order (the middle position), the songs play alphabetically, I believe.
The 3rd gen shuffle uses VoiceOver. If you are in the All Songs list, you need to use VoiceOver to switch to the playlist (see manual linked below for details). When you are in the playlist (with the shuffle's power switch set to play-in-order), then the songs should play in playlist order.
There are more details in the manual for the 3rd gen shuffle, which is online here
http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_3rdGen_UG.pdf
See page 22 for the section about setting up and using VoiceOver. The part about switching playlists starts on page 23 (Using the Playlist Menu).

I can't Start, Uninstall of Install new iTunes. I'm getting the same error message: "Window Installer Service could not be accessed". No other programs having similar problem. Any suggestions how to fix it?

For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down the page in case one of them applies.
The further information area has direct links to the current and recent builds in case you have problems downloading, need to revert to an older version or want to try the iTunes for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards) (not for XP) release as a workaround for installation or performance issues, or compatibility with QuickTime or third party software.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there are also links to backup and recovery advice should it be needed.
