Installed OS X twice, will this cause trouble?

I took my brand new MacBook Pro out of the box and inserted the OS X instillation DVD, not realizing (stupidly) that its a back up DVD and that OS X is already installed. I stopped the install midway, will this hurt my new MacBook????

Rather than reinstall, use the restore disk. That should put it back into the condition that it was before you mucked things up. Additionally, that should also include the additional software that came with the machine. You'll have to go through the setup manager again, but that's a small price to pay to recover from your miscue.

Started file vault yesterday and no progress for 24 hrs.  If I do a Command-R restore from a non-encrypted back-up will this cause problems?

You first must repartition and reformat the drive before restoring your backup.
Install or Reinstall OS X from Scratch
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Erase the hard drive:
      1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.
      2. After DU loads select your startup volume (usually Macintosh HD) from the
left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
      3. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Optionally, click on
the Security button and set the Zero Data option to one-pass. Click on
the Erase button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Install button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible
because it is three times faster than wireless.
This should install the version of OS X that you had installed.

I need to download dell drivers to a jumpdrive connected to my iMac.  Will this cause problems with my Mac?

Thanks.  These drivers are for the audio, etc. for a dell laptop I purchased used.  ( Needed something cheap for a training video that would only run on Windows.  Tried Emedia player but picture was too fuzzy.)  Dell support said I should contact Apple support for instructions on how to get the drivers onto the jumpdrive.  Any tips on doing that?

  • I use Open Office as my program. it does convert to msoffice. Will this cause me any problems in converting content ?

I use open Office for my work. I can convert to ms office. will this cause any problems ?

    Hi warbird16,
I'm curious how PDF comes into play. If you're only dealing wit OpenOffice > MS Office, and are wondering how those two applications interact, Microsoft is better suited to answer that.
If you're wondering about converting PDF files to Word, that does fall into Adobe's realm. Can you please elaborate on how the pieces fit together in your workflow?
I look forward to hearing back from you.

  • Been shutting off my Macbook Pro for months. Will this cause problems?

    Hi,
I only just read today that it's actually best to keep a Macbook Pro on sleep at night and not shut. Is this true? If it is I'll be doing from now on.
Also, I've been shutting my Macbook Pro off at night, every night, even several times during the day if I'm using it during the day. Will this damage it? If so is there anyway to reverse the effects that shutting t down might do?

It makes no real difference whether you shut it down or put it to sleep. Sleep is faster for wakeup than rebooting is. Shutdown saves on electricity or battery power (if not connected to the AC adaptor.)
No harm is caused by shutting down. If you are traveling it's better to shutdown. If not using the computer for a couple of hours then putting it to sleep will let you get back to work quicker.
The computer should be shutdown if it's not going to be used for more than 8-12 hours.

  • In downloading some games requires install of flash pgm, can this cause damage to the operating system?

I am new to Mac book pro world, wanted to run some games from website, or downloads. They require install of "Flash" f appl. Could this cause any damage to the Mac Operating System?   (I'm used to the PC Microsoft world)
    Thanks, Tom

Won't cause any damage. Apple just stopped including Flash in its default installation a while back, but there is no problems with you installing it. Just be warned that Flash apps tend to really drain your battery quickly.

  • Fundamental question about EDD - why localized? Will this cause problems in other languages?

    Hi,
I am running a German version of FrameMaker. All commands in the EDD appear in German. What happens when someone uses the EDD with an English or Chinese version of FrameMaker? Will this work as well?
If editors have a look at the EDD, do they see German commands or commands in their own language?
Can I simply change to English instead of German commands?
    Thanks for your reply.
    Apollo102

    Hi Apollo,
the EDDs are based on a Meta-EDD, that carries the whole localization of the EDD structure and the EDD structure itself.
This Meta-EDD is the elemcat file Lynne mentioned. If you replace it with a version that is localized in some other language, your standard EDD will take over that localization.
You could even modify the Meta-EDD to suit your EDD building needs better (I already saw some approach into that direction) or you could localize your EDDs to some completely different and yet unsupported language if you liked (Klingon EDD style, qapla'!).
The localization in itself is bound to the file where you embed the EDD (or Meta-EDD), so everyone who opens the EDD will find the language used for the original.

  • Could someone help me quickly, i put in new harddrive, lion is installing, but snow leopard cd is in my drive - will this cause problems?

the harddrive on my 2008 24" imac died, i purchased a new harddrive and my husband installed it with no problem.  i had some misinformation that i would have to reinstall snow leopard and then i could upgrade to lion.
i turned on the computer put the snow leopard installation cd in the drive, then my computer opens to the pewter gray linen looking screen and i see that i can install lion from there.  i used the disk utility and erased the new drive, and  reformatted and then i went back to the install lion screen and lion is downloading with no problem, BUT that snow leopard cd is in my drive and i can't eject it.  is it going to give me problems when the computer automatically reboots?  will it try to reboot to that cd instead of continuing with the lion install?  can i hold down my mouse to eject it when it reboots or will that mess up the installation?
confused, and i have an hour and 33 minutes to figure it out before it downloads.  panicking here.
    any help would be appreciated!

thank you for answering so quickly, i was really concerned that the computer would try to boot from that cd instead of continuing with the lion install.  this was too easy, i'm used to windows installation which is complicated.  i should have known apple would have made it simple for me. thanks again for the help!

  • J2EE already installed - will this cause a problem

    Hi all,
I would like to download JSC, but am a little apprehensive since I already have J2EE 1.4 and pointbase installed on my machine. I have searched FAQ and there is no mention that JSC optionally installs these components and I don't wish to ruin my current environment. Are the J2EE and pointbase installed automatically with JSC?
    Cheers

Yes, the are installed with JSC.
Areas that could be a problem are the settins (if any) of your CLASSPATH and PATH.
Also, port conflict with both pointbase and the app server if they are running.
On my install, I removed the prior versions to be safe, but if you were carefull with the above issues, it should not be a problem. It is the same app server and point base though, and they can be run outside of the IDE for other work you may be doing...

  • "Semi-clean" install of Mountain Lion - will this work?

The stability of my mac was fantastic, until about 3 weeks ago, when I started to increasingly encounter spinning beach balls, the need to do force quits and the machine refusing to shut down.  The problem's only got worse over the intervening period.  My Time Machine was corrupted, so yesterday had to do a fresh backup.  That means that going back and doing a restore of my system before the problems began isn't an option.
Given all this, I think I need to do a clean install.  I've got my OS on an SSD and my data on an HDD (where the optical drive used to be).
The one thing I'm really not looking forward to is reinstalling and re-registering all the non-App Store apps, reseting all the prefs and settings and getting all the non-standard fonts back in order. So here's what I'm planning...
I've put aside a folder on the HDD, which has within it
copies of the various font folders, along with details of their paths, so after the clean install I can just swap them in.
a copy of my apps folder, so that similarly, I'd be able to simply swap it with the folder installed after the clean install.
Is there any reason that the fonts and apps wouldn't work, using this approach?  Apologies if there's a very basic reason that I've missed.
While I know that ideally I'd go and manually reinstall all the software, I'm time poor and I'm pretty sure the root cause of the problem has to do with corruption of the OS, so this would hopefully work, and remove the problems I'm currently having.
    I'm grateful for any advice!

First, back up all data immediately, as your boot drive might be failing.
There are a few other possible causes of generalized slow performance that you can rule out easily.
    Reset the System Management Controller.
If you have many image or video files on the Desktop with preview icons, move them to another folder.
If applicable, uncheck all boxes in the iCloud preference pane.
Disconnect all non-essential wired peripherals and remove aftermarket expansion cards, if any.
Check your keychains in Keychain Access for excessively duplicated items.
Boot into Recovery mode, launch Disk Utility, and run Repair Disk.
Otherwise, take the steps below when you notice the problem.
    Step 1
Launch the Activity Monitor application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Activity Monitor in the icon grid.
Select the CPU tab of the Activity Monitor window.
Select All Processes from the menu in the toolbar, if not already selected.
Click the heading of the % CPU column in the process table to sort the entries by CPU usage. You may have to click it twice to get the highest value at the top. What is it, and what is the process? Also post the values for % User, % System, and % Idle at the bottom of the window.
Select the System Memory tab. What values are shown in the bottom part of the window for Page outs and Swap used?
Next, select the Disk Activity tab. Post the approximate values shown for Reads in/sec and Writes out/sec (not Reads in and Writes out.)
    Step 2
If you have more than one user account, you must be logged in as an administrator to carry out this step.
Launch the Console application in the same way you launched Activity Monitor. Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Select the 50 or so most recent entries in the log. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). You're looking for entries at the end of the log, not at the beginning.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some personal information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting. That should be easy to do if your extract is not too long.

  • Will this cause a broadcast storm/loop?

I have 3 2960g switches that each have about 40 devices (pc's, printers, etc..) attached to them.  Each of these 2960 switches has one port connected to a port on a  "core" switch, which is a 3950g.  The 3950 has 3 switches and all of our servers (12) conected to it's ports.  The network seems to be running alright, however most, if not all, of the port lights on ALL switches blink wildly(at least I consider it "wildly").  Am I doing this wrong?  Is there a better way to connect all these switches?
Also, this configuration is for our first floor.  The second floor has the exact same configuration, and the two 3950's (one upstairs, one downstairs) arec connected via fiber.
    Thanks for any help.

    Hi Scott,
I think I like yours comments and  leolaohoo reaction .
We don't know your Layer 3 setup, but broadcasts will stay in a broadcast domain. A broadcast will cause activity LEDs to flicker.
I would expect to see on a regular basis multicast and broadcast  packets that make the activity lights flicker in unison.  A bit daunting at the time, as your rack of switches flashed in unison like a christmas tree but as you said "the network seems to be running all right"
To ease your mind, you could look at a wireshark capture  and see if you can coordinate looking at a activity LED flash  and the wireshark capture to see the types of packets that might be worrying you.
I just did a wireshark capture  on my PC that you can see below.  I captured only  20 packets.  It was interesting that  just about every packet is a broadcast packet that will cause all port LEDs  in my layer 2 switch network to flicker.  But I know my layer 2 network is just fine.
Never hurts to be cautious, and monitor switch MIB variables and wireshark capture to see what is really happening on your network.
One positive thing to do if you are feeling like you would like better monitoring on your network,  and you reside in the USA or Canada  is to look at the new onplus appliance with included service   we are offering  for our partner community.

If you are currently running an iOS lower than 5.0, connect the iPad to the computer, open iTunes. Then select the iPad under the Devices heading on the left, click on the Summary tab and then click on Check for Update.
Tip - If connected to your computer, you may need to disable your firewall and anitvirus software temporarily.  Then download and install the iOS update. Be sure and backup your iPad before the iOS update. After you update an iPad (except iPad 1) to iOS 6.x, the next update can be installed via wifi (i.e., not connected to your computer).

  • If I have streamed my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad, through icloud, can I now delete them from my phone or will this cause them to be deleted from my iPad also. I need to do an update and free some space

I have icloud. I have backed up my photos from my iPhone 5 to my iPad. Can I now delete the photos from my phone and they will stay on my iPad? I need to clear space in order to run an update.

I get the following warning message when deleting a shared Phoyo Stream:
"Name of Stream" will be deleted from all of your devices and the devices of subscribers."
It pops up because that is what will happen. It does not mean photos stored locally in iPhoto on your Mac will be deleted.
If iPhoto is set to automatically import photos in your Photo Stream and store locally on Mac, you are covered with photos copied to "My Photo Steam". I don't believe that includes the photos in a shared photo stream you create or that you accept which was created by someone else. I can add photos to a shared stream from photos on my iPhone that were transferred from my computer. If those were saved by iPhoto on my Mac as well which are already in iPhoto on my Mac, I would not want that.
