Installed Samsung F3 1TB internal Hard drive configuration partition

Hi,
Have just installed a Samsung 1tb internal hard drive and now it comes to formatting and partitioning it not sure what amount of gb and how many partitions to do. I have all my itunes music and films stored on an external 1tb hard drive for information, and also have an external 320 gb drive for back ups. So any ideas what to do with the partitions and gb on the internal drive.

There will be a lot of views on how the drive should be partitioned, so I will offer my opinion, and state it is only one opinion.
Take a look at the amount of space you have been using for your operating system, are you planning on upgrading the OS, and then set a partition for only the OS. Make it large enough to allow for future upgrades, maybe 30-40 GB larger than needed so there is enough space for doing installs.
Keep a partition large enough for all of your software, maybe have that be most of the remainder of the drive after the OS partition.
Since you keep music, etc., on an external drive it should be easy to keep the internal drive in good shape and unfragmented.
You could set a partition for temporary files, the /tmp file system, but it is easy to fill that up with a lot of web surfing and get yourself in trouble on space.
Anyway, my view is a good size partition to allow for OS and future OS installs, and the rest for software.

  • IF I install FCP on another internal hard drive but boot off the other drive?

    Hi
There is something I don't understand
When you have 2 hard drives and one has the OS and you decide to clone that onto a second internal hard drive, what happens to the applications in that second drive?  Do you have to reboot and re-start from that second hard drives "startup disk" to use those applications
The reason being is this.  Right now I have the OS in one drive but I'd like to install a second hard drive, clone the OS but also intsall Final Cut Pro on that second drive, so everything that I do as far as editing is contained within that second drive
What I'm getting at is, can I still use Final Cut Pro Application in that second drive even though I started up the computer up from the first drives startup disk?
Or would it be better to buy a large drive, like a 2TB and just partition the Final Cut Pro within that drive?
    Thank you!

    Hi Jim
But wouldn't that be the case if you have an OS in each drive (FCP in the second drive)
Although that second drive would not be "running" per se, wouldn't FCP still work as a stand alone in that drive? Or no?
    I'm talking about FCP 7
    Thank you

  • Installing Leopard and new internal hard drive at same time, best plan?

Ok so basically the title explains what I need to do. I am currently travelling in Europe, and returning home to New York on Tuesday night. I have a new hitachi 250gb HD and will have Leopard waiting for me at home when I arrive, and will get right to doing this installation. I am writing on the discussion boards here because I am hoping the users here can give me their opinions on what is the best plan of action to do this whole install?
So what I was thinking was, I should remove the hard drive that's already inside, put it into an external enclosure. Then, put my new blank 250gb hard drive into the macbook pro, close up the computer, then put the Leopard OSX install disk, and do a completely fresh install of Leopard. Then, after installing (or during installing?) I should run the migration assistant program to get all my files and settings etc. transferred over to the new internal hard drive with Leopard on it, from the old hard drive that will be plugged in from an enclosure as an external drive.
Will this plan have any problems that I am not aware of? Is there a better process for doing this task? Any advice will be greatly appreciated! I am anxious to get my new hard drive into the computer because my 160gb is filling up, and dying so badly to use the new Leopard!!

You could also put the new disk in the external enclosure, partition it using disk utility. Then make a clone of your current hard disk to the new external one using the restore feature in disk utility. Boot from the external disk and Install Leopard as an upgrade keeping all your files and setting. check everything is all running how I should and swap drives over. That's another option for you.

  • Can I install CS6 on 2 internal hard drives (running different Mac OS's) as well as my laptop?

Hey- I am installing another hard drive in my Mac Pro (late 2012). I will be installing Yosemite on that drive while retaining Mountain Lion on the original drive. I have CS6 installed on the original drive as well as my MacBook Pro. Will Adobe allow me to install CS6 on the new internal hard drive? I won't be running them at the same time. This would be a great question for the 24/7 chat line but they are "closed" (??). Anybody know the answer?

You have 2 activations and that is that. You cannot add a third.

  • How to Install Hitachi SATA Deskstar Internal Hard Drive?

I just purchased HITACHI SATA Deskstar 3/5" 500GB/16MB Cache/72RPM Internal Hard Drive, which said it was compatible with my Mac. I have a iMac mid 2007 2.4 GHz Intel Core Duo2 running OSx10.6.4. Is this a simple install or do you recommend I take it into repair? Any suggestions would be welcome, I am a bit of a novice.

Thanks for the feedback. BTW, you might want to roll your own ext HD. I did this one in April when I got the 27":
Macally GS350SUAB Hi-Speed eSATA/1394A/1394B/USB2.0 Storage Enclosure for 3.5inch SATA HDD
Hitachi 1 TB Deskstar SATA 7200 RPM 32 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive HD31000 IDK/7K
Search around Amazon and you'll probably come up with larger HDs to put into it.

  • Installing iTunes to alternate internal hard drive?

    Cliff Notes Version:
Can someone help me re-install iTunes on an alternate internal drive (a drive other than C)?
I have just removed iTunes and all components from my PC and now need to reinstall.
You can read the details below but ultimately I want to install all things Apple on my E drive as opposed to my C drive.
If you do read the details, I chose option 3 at the bottom as opposed to trying to fix existing errors or files.
I tried moving both the library file and the database file as instructed but you can see the error messages below.
What I am looking to do is do the original install on the E drive to avoid moving anything as that did not work the last time.
I am not looking to save any files or playlists...I can repopulate those fairly easily. I just want this set up right out of the gate.
    Any advice greatly appreciated.
    Original Posting on Another Board:
I originally tried to move itunes the library & database and got the these errors
    - iTunes Library cannot be saved . There is not enough memory
    - the iPhone Doug's iPhone cannot be synced. An unknown error has occured (-23)
    My System:
    Windows 7 64 bit
C drive = 96Gb SSD that is used for program files only. I want to move both the library and database (ie all Apple software) off of here.
    iTunes 10.7.0.21
System has 8Tb of memory over several hard drives (music, photos, etc...). iTunes will only manage the music part of my media
Of these drives, about 1.5 Tb is music. Of that 1Tb is a copy (FLAC) of all my CD's. The other 1/2 Tb is digital music I have downloaded.
E: = 1 Tb drive for digital music (mp3 files) It is less than 20% full
H: = 1 Tb drive containing a FLAC copy of my CD collection
Bonjour was/is disabled as it had been causing other issues with the system (edit - is has now been uninstalled with the remainder of the Apple software)
I wanted to move itunes (both the library and database files) is to keep the SSD at a lower capacity. Obviously the library files alone would have over-ran the drive, but I am not sure how large the database file gets, so to be safe I moved it too. Here are the steps I took:
First I moved the library (at the point it was moved it only had 3 mps cd's in it).
    1. Edit>Pref>Advanced
    2. Checked only the Keep iTunes Media Folder Organized (I do not want a second copy of all my music in the library.
    3. Clicked CHANGE button and chose E:/Music folder (the same drive I have my digital files on and only 20% full.
    4. File>Library>Organize Library>Consolidate Files>OK
I then moved the iTunes Database:
    1. Shut down iTunes
    2. Copied the iTunes folder to the new location (also E:/Music)
    3. Restarted iTunes while holding the shift key and chose the library.
Finally, I moved in all the digital files from the E drive (File>add Folder to Library). This appeared to work and all my MP3 files appeared in iTunes.
The problem started when I attempted to sync my iPhone. I should note that my music library has been recently rebuilt as I lost everything on a previous drive (music, iTunes, etc...). So, when I attempted to sync the phone for the first time since re-installing/rebuilding everything, I got an error message: this iPhone is already synced to another Library. And that if I continued with the sync, I would lose all the files on the iPhone. I was ok with that as I had the files in the new/rebuilt iTunes. Also checked was the button to let me check the files I wanted to sync as iTunes is much larger in size than my phone. At that point I tried to select several files to sync with the phone and got the error messages listed at the top.
So, I have a few questions:
    1. Can anyone tell me what the error messages mean? The first about not having enough size makes no sense. The drive that iTunes was moved to was only 20% full at the time on a 1Tb drive. Even if I had chosen to keep a copy of the music in iTunes (which I did not) it would have still only been 40% full including the iTunes Library file. I have no idea why I got this message.
    2. Just how large will the iTunes database get. I know this is subject to how much it "manages" but assuming 3-4 Tb of music, photos, etc... how large will this file grow? On my SSD Windows is taking up more than 25% of the drive. I could leave this on the SSD provided it will remain fairly small and just move the library but thought it would be just as easier to move everything.
    3. Would I be better off completely installing iTunes and re-installing it on the alternate E drive as opposed to the default C (SSD) drive? This is what I have choosen to do, so far have uninstalled iTunes and now have questions regarding re-installing on an alternate drive (see very top)
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

turingtest2 - thanks for the info. Have some questions:
    1. Already used 3rd party software to backup all the music from my phone (about 99% ripped from cd or purchased elsewhere than iTunes. So, I really need to just get any data (contacts, etc...) and the apps purchased backed up. I assume doing steps 3-6 from the Recover Your iTunes Library link you sent will do this?
    2. From what you sent, just my database file will be about 20Mb on a 96Mb drive. That is precisely why I want to move the database as well as the library off the C drive.
    3. I currently have no library as I deleted all things Apple earlier today. What I do have is 2 drives that contain music, an E drive for music downloaded and an H drive for music ripped from CD's. So I don't currently have a library to know if it's working. The process you describe is a split process with the library database on one drive and the media folder on another drive. In my case I do want to "move" the entire iTunes folder to another drive but an internal drive. And as opposed to moving the files, is there a way to simply install them that way when downloading a new copy of iTunes (rather than installing then moving the files)?
Also, in the Make a Split Library Portable document you linked, it sawy that any media files outside of  the media folder will need to be consolidated. Since I am starting from scratch, I assume there will be no files there yet to consloidate. Or would this be the files I backed up and restored (apps, data,etc...) in step 2?
As for manipulations you mention, are any of these necessary in my case if I am not moving a library but rather creating a new library on a different drive? I assume once the
Or, in short, how can I simply install (or move) the entire iTunes folder to my E drive and then compile the library with music? And if you don't mind, could you be pretty detailed on moving/installing both the library database and the media folder on the new drive? I got confused about renaming, root drives, etc...
Or am I overthinking this and it is as simple as downloading iTunes (to the C drive)> copying the iTunes Media folder (and all contents)>pasting that folder in my E drive> going back and deleting the original iTunes Media folder in the C drive> then re-opening iTunes +shift key to point to the new iTunes Media folder on the E drive?
    Thanks again

  • Can I install a second (larger) internal hard drive?

Out of storage, thought I needed an external hard drive but someone was pointing me towards an internal drive which would be cheaper.  Does my older G5 PPC (pre-Intel duel processor, running OS10.4.11) have the ability to take in another hard drive internally?  If so, What should I get and how do I install it?

  • How do I move my iTunes media/install to a new internal hard drive?

The Seagate hard drive that stores my Windows 7 OS and my iTunes media library is dying a slow death.  I list the hard drive manufacturer because of my frustration with that company right now.  (Buy WD !).
Anyway, I fresh installed iTunes and Windows 7 on another hard drive.  Since I can sometimes get to the Seagate drive, I copied my existing iTunes media library from the dying Seagate drive to the new WD drive.  I went in to iTunes preferences->advanced and changed the location of the iTunes media folder location (C:\iTunes\iTunes Media) to where I copied the original iTunes media folder.  Everything is fine so far.
    My two problems are these:
    1. iTunes doesn't show me ANY of the audiobooks that I have purchased.  Although, I haven't gone through all the music to verify, it does seem as though all purchased movies and music is accounted for.  (movies and tv shows are available for streaming anyway).
    2. When I check to sync my iPhone 4S with the iTunes library I get the nasty message that says "are you sure you want to remove your existing music, etc...fro this iPhone"?  Even though I have reinstalled iTunes, it is still the same PC.  How can I get iTunes to recognize that my iPhone syncs to the iTunes library "normally".  Am I the only one who thinks iTunes shouldn't be so troublesome (like Windows is) ?
Thanks in advance for helping me with these issues!

Does anyone know how / if I can get an Apple support person to help with this problem?  Do I need to go to the Apple store?

  • BlackMagic Intensity Pro Capture Card & (3) 1TB Internal Hard Drives

    Hello,
This is my first time using BM Intensity Pro. Prior to tonight all I used was FW400 & iMovie/iDVD.
I have now upgraded to Final Cut Studio with a BM Intensity Pro Capture Card and Three 1TB Hard Drives (7200 RPM with 32MB cache) - Striped as a RAID set to create ONE 2.7 TB HD for Video Storage.
I have a few questions that I would like some help with.
I would like to capture at the highest video quality possible.
I'm worried that Hard Drives wont be able to handle the capture speed or file size?
I ran the BM Disk Speed Test. I'm just not sure what all these numbers mean?
Can someone please explain to me what the following information is telling me?
Do the results mean that I'm good to go with uncompressed HDV via HDMI?
The first is my OEM Mac Hard Drive. The second is my 3TB RAID set.

I would invest in an external RAID controller.
You can find a variety of such from AMUG in RAID5/6 that will support higher sustained thruput.

  • Installing Mavericks on second internal Hard Drive (SSD)

I've recently installed a second hard drive in my 15" 2011 MacBook Pro using the Optibay drive replacement. I've put a 120 GB solid state drive in place of the CD drive. I have been attempting to install OSX Mavericks on it, but have been unsuccessful. The drive currently has no data on it, and has been reformatted several times to re-attempt the installation. Each time I have tried to install mavericks on the extra SSD in the optibay drive, I have received this error:
"Install Failed: OS X could not be installed on your computer. OS X can't be installed on the disk because a recovery system can't be created. Visit www.apple.com/support/no-recovery to learn more" and it only gives me the option to restart the computer.
After I visited the site I tried the suggested steps in both of the articles linked to on the page, but still no success. I am not running RAID on the drive. It is brand new and has been in the laptop for about a month. It hasn't been used at all. I've also tried creating a bootable flash drive, but startup disk will not recognize the flash drive or the other drive in the computer to start up from.
I was thinking of possibly taking the SATA drive out (where my OS Mavericks currently resides) and replacing it with the SSD to force it to start up there or the flash drive. Would that be the logical next step here?
This is what I am trying to do: I want to have all of my OS and software on the solid state so it will be quicker, but I will store most of my data on the SATA drive that came with the computer.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Maximum speed internal hard drive configuration

Barefeets posted an interesting speed test using 2 velociraptors as the boot drive. I am considering the same setup. I also want to use three other internal drives (a total of 5 drives) set up as a PS swap raid and Image files raid. The fifth drive would be in the lower superdrive bay.
I'm using Seagate 1.5T 7200.11 drives and creating three partitions on each drive. The first partition on each drive will be 15GB for a total of 45GB for PS Swap. The second partition on each drive will be 100GB for a total of 300GB for writing and reading PS files. The remaining partitions on each drive (about 1.14T) will be left alone and will act as stand alone drives. I will move data from the 300GB raid to one of the remaining large partitions and chronosync to the other two drives for redundancy. Routinely that data will move off the computer to outboard backup drives. If I have a drive failure I have the two remaining drives, plus outboard, to rely on. Does all of this make sense? Am I missing anything?

*A Case For More Memory on your Nehalem Mac Pro*
Adobe After Effects CS4 (and CS3) spawns subprocesses -- one for each core -- when 'multiprocessing' is enabled in Preferences. Each of those subprocesses can grab up to 3GB of RAM. We typically use the Total Benchmark created by Brian Maffitt to benchmark with After Effects. If you run Activity Monitor during the rendering, you can not only observe the multiple subprocesses but you can observe how much real memory each of them is appropriating as the second phase of the project render progresses toward completion. When we had 16G installed, we observed 13GB of real memory in use.

Only certain functions/filters in Photoshop use multiple cores. Some "MP aware" functions include Rotate, Gaussian Blur, Motion Blur, Radial Blur, Lighting Effects, Lens Flare, Pointilize, Sharpen Edges. These "MP aware" effects use all available cores.
As for memory usage, Photoshop is able to grab more than the 3GB memory cache defined in preferences. If you overflow that and there is memory to spare, OS X Leopard will allocate unused memory as a virtual scratch volume. If you are editing RAW photos with lots of layers and lots of history states, having the 8 memory slots on the 8-core is a big advantage.

You want 16-32GB of RAM. Turn off Spotlight on scratch volume and never ever use the boot drive for primary scratch pref or for media files, once you get into large files that is paramount. Even the stripped boot will help a lot.
4GB files can really push a sytem to the limit, and require optimizing everything.
Adobe believed it was safe to use Carbon code rather than learn new coding, new and different compilers. And a lot of programs are not dealing with more than 2 cores all that well, and even Intel keeps updating their compilers they offer to help improve code. - So yes, and now is perfect time with the move to Snow Leopard for CS5 to go 64-bit, but just as important, multi-core aware. They already know how, on Windows 64, to use a GPU for rendering images in CS4 (look up the Quadro CX) for "GPGPU."
With RAM and properly configured storage, and multiple discreet arrays, each on their own drives probably, I've seen G5 owners with 3-5 10K VelociRaptors load large apps and files in sub-zero bounce - and breath new life into G5.

  • What are the things required to upgrade internal hard drive For Macbook Pro mid 2012 13 inch?

    Hi,
I want to upgrade my internal drive but I don't know how to do that. I have already purchased a WD 1TB internal hard drive. However, I contacted apple support and they said if I try to upgrade the hdd myself, then the warranty of the macbook would be void. I am from India . I currently have a Macbook Pro mid 2012,13 inch.
Also, do i need to download a setup of Yosemite before changing the hdd?
    Please guide me
    Thanks and Regards
    Abhineet Arora

You know what the impact will be on the warranty terms.  If you want to install it yourself, look at this video:
    http://eshop.macsales.com/installvideos/macbookpro_13_unibody_mid12_hd/
It is not very difficult.  You will need a #00 Phillips and a #6 Torx drivers.
    Ciao.

  • How do I set Catalogue to new larger internal hard drive and then delete the files from the smaller

I have just had a new 1TB internal hard drive installed in my PC and then the original smaller internal 500GB hard drive cloned onto it. The new 1TB is now Local Dick C and the smaller 500GB has been changed from C and is now Local Disk F. PSE11 is running from the new C and all my pictures are on both C and F but the catalogue is pointing to F. I want to delete all of the old files on F to free up space since they are all cloned to the new 1TB C, so I want the PSE11 catalogue to point only to the pictures on C. I have tried creating a new Catalogue and importing my pictures from C. The images come in and look connected to C but, when I close PSE11 and then reopen that new catalogue, the image path reads F, as does the original catalogue. So, now I have two catalogues apparently point to F but I want to: 1) have only one catalogue pointing to C; 2) the delete catalogues pointing to F; 3) then reformat F: so I have a clean 500GB old hard drive for future expansion. Can some please help?

Grant, all I can say is that another user was having almost identical issues a month or so ago. Unfortunately I cannot find the discussion thread now but my feeling is that it never resolved satisfactorily while both drives were connected.
To save you a lot of work formatting, copying, erasing and so forth why not just unplug the SATA cable from the old drive and see if the Organizer then starts behaving nicely with the new drive. If it does then you can go the destructive route on the old drive.
Hopefully the poster who had the similar problem might read this and update us on his/her situation - if it got resolved and how.

  • Best Dual Hard Drive Configuration?

    Hello,
I hope this is the correct forum for this.
I am about to install a second internal hard drive in the desktop computer I use for my studio work, and am having problems coming up with the most efficient setup.
First of all, here is what I currently have and use:
             Hardware:
                Acer predator gaming pc
                i3 processor-64 bit ready
1TB internal hard drive (from factory)
quick change internal hard drive bay  ( currently empty but have new 2 TB internal hard drive ready to install)
                8 gb Ram
                M-Audio Mini 3rd generation
                M-Audio Fast Track Ultra Pro
            Software:
                Adobe Audition CS6.0
                ProTools LE8
Windows Seven 32 bit   (have Windows seven 64 bit ready to install also)
This system is mainly used for creating radio programs, not live but more in podcast format, I also use it for music and songs for the programs but I have been approached about doing some video work, mainly dubbing. I rely almost totally on audition cs6.0 and at times wonder why I even have protools installed...other than I do like a few of the effects
The reason for wanting to make changes:
I made a mistake in installing 32 bit windows seven in the first place, because I did not take "64 bit ready" literally and assumed that some type of upgrading was needed.
When I was approached about the video work I began to upgrade the system by installing more Ram (originally only had 2gb DDR3) but after installing the Ram found that 32 bit windows seven will only use 3 GB Ram, but that 64 bit windows seven will utilize  more Ram. I also am contemplating purchasing Adobe Premier 6.0 which I believe needs 64 bit windows.
Even though I am currently only using one third of the original 1 TB hard drive, I would also like to use the second hard drive for backup and or storage. I like having multiple backup options and currently use several external hard drives, one for a clone of my entire system, another for incremental backups and still one more for weekly "drag and drop" backups.
    My thoughts were:
           1) To install windows seven 64 bit on a partition in the second hard drive and use another partition on that hard drive for backups and/or storage
          2) To install windows seven 64 bit on the first hard drive as a second operating system (leaving windows 32 bit also) and use the second hard drive as a backup and/or storage drive
          3) To install windows 64 bit as the only operating system on the first hard drive and use the second drive as backup/storage
I am not really an expert at all of this and have made some monumental msitakes in the past that have cost me weeks of down time, so am really trying to avoid making mistakes or having regrets about how I set the system up.
                                                                                                           Thanks in Advance!

    Hi Bob,
Thanks for the quick reply, and no, I don't really have a particular reason to keep the 32 bit o/s, other than a fear of messing up when doing a clean install of the 64 bit. I think that's why I wanted someone elses opinion...I had a sneaking suspicion that I was going about it the wrong way.
I guess the next step is just to do fresh backups and figure out how to migrate everything.
