Installed SL, now Preview won't open my .PICT files
I use .pict files for photos in my QuarkXpress layouts. Preview doesn't recognize them, now that I've installed 10.6 SL. I got a window suggesting that I check the"Opne in 32-bit mode" but that didn't help. Help! I'm up against publication deadlines every day!
Because the new Preview in 64-bit just won't handle that very very old file format. But it will in 32-bit mode. I don't know enough about programming to even guess why. If you still get the message, then you did not get Preview to open in 32-bit mode.
1. Quit Preview, go to your Applications folder, select Preview, do Command-i to bring up GetInfo, and check the box for 32-bit
2. Try launching Preview by double-click on its icon in Applications and try to open a pict file
3. If you get the warning message, quit Preview, and relaunch it again from the Application folder--it took me two tries to get to actually run in 32-bit mode
You will then be able to work with the pict files. Oh, and it doesn't matter in the slightest if you saved the files with Preview as the default. You can open them with anything that can open a pict file, regardless of the default application. You can even change the default using GetInfo if you find something that works better--just select the program you want in the "Open with" section of GetInfo for one of the files, then click the "Change All" button.

ILife '11 installed and now iPhoto won't open, "damaged or incomplete".
I was unable to use iDVD after having Mountain Lion installed. I had an iLife '11 disk and I installed it. I didn't see any changes in the application folder so I used the iLife '11 disk again, found the iDVD application and selectively installed it. Now I have and iPhoto icon with a white circle crossed out and when I try to open iPhoto, I get the message, "You can’t open the application “iPhoto.app” because it may be damaged or incomplete."
I don't know what version of iPhoto I have because there are just two dashes after the "version" when I Right Click and select "Get info" on the iPhoto.app line in Finder.
I have been reading support blogs for hours last night and this morning. I am afraid to try any of the fixes because I have already caused problems for myself and my problem doesn't seem to exactly match anyone elses problem, but seems to be a mixture of more than one problem.
I have a backup harddisk that was set to the time machine before I had my computer repaired. It only backs up to Dec 2, 2013. I have not hooked it up again yet out of fear that it will start backing up and mixing old with new. I had Lion before the repair (new video disk) and when I received the computer, Mountain Lion was installed. This was last week. I specifically asked that Mavericks not be installed because I was reading so much unhappiness with it.
So - any help extremely appreciated. I am frozen. You need to reinstall. There is no choice.
Note the instructions below for reinstalling from Disk:
To re-install iPhoto
1. Put the iPhoto.app in the trash (Drag it from your Applications Folder to the trash)
2. Download it from the App Store to reinstall It's on your Purchases List* there.
For older versions that have been installed from Disk you'll need these additional steps:
2a: On 10.5: Go to HD/Library/Receipts and remove any pkg file there with iPhoto in the name.
2b: On 10.6: Those receipts may be found as follows: In the Finder use the Go menu and select Go To Folder. In the resulting window type
/var/db/receipts/
2c: on 10.7 or later they're at
/private/var/db/receipts
A Finder Window will open at that location and you can remove the iPhoto pkg files.
3. Re-install.
If you purchased an iLife Disk, then iPhoto is on it.
If iPhoto was installed on your Mac when you go it then it’s on the System Restore disks that came with your Mac. Insert the first one and opt to ‘Install Bundled Applications Only.
*Sometimes iPhoto is not visible on the Purchases List. it may be hidden. See this article for details on how to unhide it.

One question often asked: Will I lose my Photos if I reinstall?
iPhoto the application and the iPhoto Library are two different parts of the iPhoto programme. So, reinstalling the app should not affect the Library. BUT you should always have a back up before doing this kind of work. Always.
I specifically asked that Mavericks not be installed because I was reading so much unhappiness with it.
There is much unhappiness with every version of every Os and App everr released - roll back to the release of Mountain Lion and you'll see exactly the same type of commentary. In the main, much of this commentary is useless.
The problems are manifold: for a start, happy people are less likely to review, unhappy people are much more inclined to. That's why we don't have thousands and thousands of posts on this forum from all the people who have no problems saying "look I have no problems". Unhappy people get cross and are more likely to express that anger in negative reviews.
Then what about the reviewer? What is his or her knowledge, experience and skill level? No doubt they are having problems, and real ones, but how do you know if their issues are problems with the app, their own inexperience, third party conflicts and so on. I've seen people on here claim the fact that iPhoto won't edit video is a bug. I've seen hundreds and hundreds of posts from folks on here who are certain they've found a bug, only for their glitch to be resolved. No review is worth anything unless you know something of the reviewer, his or her knowledge and experience.
So frankly, I never bother with those reviews on any such stores, not just iPhoto on the Mac App Store. -

If the optical disk is broken, then you can't use your install disk to repair the startup disk if necessary.
Try booting in Safe Mode
It takes a little longer then a normal boot. Once you are in Safe Mode launch Disk Utility (Applications/Utilities)
Select your HDD (manufacturer ID) in the left panel.
Select First Aid in the Main panel.
Click Verify.
At least this way you will know if there are problems with your startup disk before trying to troubleshoot Safari.
When you are finished click the Apple Menu / Restart.
Also I was able to delete my cache and now I can make an attempt to open a new tab, but then it immediately closes and gives me the unexpectedly had to quit message this time with a new number at the end of that KERN blah blah blah one and that number if it helps is 0x0000000c
If the startup disk is ok, post a crash report.
If Safari has just crashed, press the Report button on the CrashReporter dialog box to view the crash information.
Now copy/paste the entire contents of the Crash Reporter window into your reply here. If the crash report dialog does not appear or the crash is hard to reproduce, crash logs can be retrieved from the ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter> folder. -
Just installed Acrobat, now Firefox won't open PDFs
Hi,
I just installed Adobe Acrobat 8 Standard on my computer (running Windows 7). Now, if I click a link to a PDF in Firefox, it doesn't open. A new tab opens, as before, but then I get an error message telling me to close my pdf reader and my browser. I've tried this, it doesn't work. I've tried restarting my computer, it doesn't work. I've tried going into Task Manager and killing any task related to Mozilla or Firefox, then reopening Firefox and trying again, no luck. I'm getting to my wit's end.
What does work:
I can still save pdf files and open them with reader
I can still open pdfs using Internet Explorer
At some point during the process, it asked me if I wanted Acrobat 8 or Acrobat Reader 9 to open PDFs by default. I don't know how to reaccess this option to see if changing it would help. I'll gladly provide any more information neccessary.
Thanks,
Jackson C.Just to add the specifics of the error message:

Update just installed and now iPhoto won't open.
The Software Update message appeared ... so I updated. After that a message appeared that my iPhoto library would need to be updated in order to open. Sfar ... Fine! ... This is as per usual. It went through Upgrading Steps to 9 of 9.
But now ... iPhoto will not open.
I had the latest version of iPhoto available. My Mac runs on Version 10.7.4
What is going on???I had the latest version of iPhoto available. My Mac runs on Version 10.7.4
No you don't. Not if you're running 10.7.4. The latest version of iPhoto is 9.5.1 and only runs on Mavericks, 10.9.5.
So give us the exact version you're using. Go to the iPhoto menu and select About iPhoto to get the version.

Installed Realplayer now iTunes won't open
I wan't to know how to uninstall Realplayer on Power G5. When I try to open iTunes only Realplayer comes up and I don't like it anyway. I tried putting it in the trash as suggested but did no good. HELP please.
Search for "real player" and "realplayer"
/Library/Application Support
/Library/Internet Plug-ins (not sure but worth looking)
~/Library/Preferences
Also, click and do a Get Info on an iTunes file and it will show what the Default Application is to open with. Change All to iTunes.
Repair Permissions from Disk Utility.
Which version of Real? I never use it, have it sitting here though 'cause I don't like it (or Flash, or various other web plug-ins).

Preview won't open simple .ps files
It seems that under 10.4.3, Preview will no longer open the very simplest, hand-written PostScript files. For instance, go to any of the examples at http://www.cs.indiana.edu/docproject/programming/postscript/examples.html, click on "try it", and Preview says simply "File error. Couldn't open the file." I have an older system with 10.4.0 and on that one, these files open just fine. I'm guessing that the new PostScript engine requires some additional header information or something that is normally present in machine-generated PostScript, but not in hand-written PostScript. Anyone know what's going on here or what a work-around might be?
G5 Mac OS X (10.4.3)That pdf it's not compatible with the mac internal pdf viewer, so you need Acrobat reader to see this, safari can't show it either. You can see it because of the acrobat reader plug-in installed.
Extrange because pdf is designed to be very compatible format, upwards and backwards.
As an example, every letter is codified in pdf v1, so an old acrobat reader v1 could show the texts in every actual and future pdfs.
Every new thing added to the standard is added like layers upper the previous layers.
Lots of clever engineers think a lot to don't let this happen, but just one d*ckhead and this pdf ignores the rules of compatibility.
Even the last versions of Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator only show the not compatible message. -
I'm using Linux Mint 12, this message appears when attempting to log in one of my accounts. I first installed Mint 12 on Sunday and the login worked fine. Problem occurred when I updated Firefox in Linux the next day.

I installed the new version thinking it would be the same, It was horrible! uninstalled it... Installed the older version and now it won't open and when I try it says it can't because the library can't open because it was used on a newer version. Come on! I just want my music! How do I open this and get my music back.
I put my Ipod in and it still says the same thing, what's going on? Please help me!I don't know whom to thank first-- b noir for telling me about the Lorraine fix or Lorraine for figuring out the fix. THE LORRAINE FIX WORKED FOR ME!!! (I feel a little like I am advertising "Hooked on Phonics" with that last line!)
Thank you doesn't say it strongly enough, but THANK YOU b noir and Lorraine for your help. I was to the boiling point last night and starting to get there tonight. Now I am resting easy and thankful that there is a community of computer users out there who care enough to troubleshoot problems together and work together to figure out a solution--and then to take the time to post and share information.
I would STRONGLY suggest that anyone who is having the iTunes issues where iTunes just plain won't open at all after downloading the newest version and has a pc with Norton Internet Security 2005 try the "Lorraine Method."
I am so happy I think I might sing. Or not--I will let my songs on iTunes do the singing for me now that I can again!!!!!!!
And to those still looking for answers--be patient--I now know how incredibly frustrating this can be and I hope that you all find your solutions very very soon!!

I'm trying to install Adobe PS CS3 for my boss on an other computer. I put the Program on a hard disc and copied it to the other computer now it won't open and says it needs the license. What can I do to make it work on this computer?
Copying the program over to a new machine will not work. Install it using installation files and activate it using the serial number assigned to the license.

I installed 6.0.2 on OS10.7.5 and now Safari won't open. 6.0.2 is just for Mountain Lion. How do I revert to 6.0.1?
I do have a cloned back-up, so I tried to just copy Safari 6.0.1 back onto my main drive—wouldn't work. Got a message that the System needs Safari and I can't touch it.
I'm trying to find a simpler way to revert than clone backwards, which takes a lot of time. And actually I never use Safari. I'm a Chrome user.
You are correct that I downloaded 6.0.2, rather than using software update. However, with many other pieces of software, if you try to install over the wrong system, you get a message telling you that the installation can't be done. Apple could have saved a lot of trouble by using this message.
I have three machines of different vintage, so one is on 10.6.8, one on 10.7.5 and one on 10.8.2. I am usually pretty careful about software updates and which system is needed. Unfortunately, in this case I used CNET download, and the description of 6.0.2 said it was for Lion and Mountain Lion. -
I was offered an iTunes update yesterday and said yes to install it. It seems to have installed it. Now it won't open.
