Installed Snow Leopard, got 10.5.6 Instead!

Hi
A bit confused. I bought the SNow Leopard disc and ran an erase an install. Went through the motions of re-registering everything, but it turns out is installed 10.5.6 (I was on 10.5.8 before).
Have tried installing again (not as a clean install) and it has done the same thing.
Am I missing something?
Thanks!
Sam

I know it sounds insane, but it really is true..
The disc is definitely a Snow Leopard one and says 'Install Snow Leopard' on the icon.
The install and erase option was only available when I restarted using the dvd as the startup disc.
It did install Snow Leopard on my MacBook (I only tried after it failed on the iMac to see if it would work) - so I am thinking it is my computer rather than the disc.
I tried again and it actually appears that the installation of Leopard is stopping short. The bar gets to around 20% and then the computer restarts When it restarts it gives the language selection pane and tries to continue the installation - but for Leopard!
I read somewhere that the installer will backout of the process if it encounters an error, but I like everyone else don't understand how it then installs 10.5.6.
Does anyone know what I would need to wipe everything and start again?

Haven't a clue, but the machine didn't like something. Zap the PRAM and Reset the SMC, then try reinstalling again.

  • Unable to install Snow Leopard via disk or USB drive

I have a white MacBook bought in the summer of 2008. A few weeks ago, I attempted to install Snow Leopard and got a disk error (the one where it tells you to clean the disk and start again). I returned the disk, got a replacement, tried again and got the same message. At that point, I called Apple, and the person I talked to concluded that the problem was my optical drive rather than the disk. The optical drive was replaced a year ago under warranty, and it works fine with everything but Snow Leopard. Then I decided to try to install Snow Leopard from a USB drive instead. Everything worked fine until it was restoring Snow Leopard from the CD to the USB drive (I was doing this through Disk Utility), and I got the message Restore Failure Input/Output Error. I don't know if this means that the disk is screwed up after all or that this is a different version of the same problem with my optical drive. I'm really not sure where to go next. I don't need Snow Leopard, but I'd like to be able to update, and I'm not sure what my next step is. My MacBook is my only computer, and I am reluctant to leave it for several days to have the optical drive fixed yet again, if, in fact, that's the problem. Thanks in advance for any advice.

Understood that you don't want to leave your Mac for several days to have it fixed, but ultimately this is something you probably will need to do unless you are willing to buy an external optical drive.
The failure error message probably means the optical drive is defective, although there is some small chance you got two defective DVD's in a row. If you have an Apple Store in your area, take the MacBook & the DVD in & ask them to check both. They should be willing to help you install Snow Leopard by an alternate method even if your optical drive is the problem.

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
Mac OS X doesn't come with iLife applications, so you have to install them manually after installing Mac OS X.
Insert the Applications disc or Mac OS X Install Disc 2 DVD and install iLfe applications. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest update. If you want, you can purchase iMovie, GarageBand and iPhoto in the App Store, so you will get the most recent version

    Hi Donald,
No it doesn't erase anything by default, it does what we used to call an  Archive and Install feature, which can give you a new OS, yet preserve your files and settings if you have enough room on your HD...
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=107120
But it does it automatically unless you specifically erase the Disk, but will replace Tiger completely for the OS & several Apple Apps like Safari, Mail, etc, yet preserve your old settings for those!
If you think you may need Tiger to run any APPs that do not work in SL/10.6, then clone or backup first.
I would recomend 2 things before installing though...
Make sure you have enough RAM & HD space.
    Snow Leopard/10.6.x Requirements...
    General requirements
       * Mac computer with an Intel processor
        * 1GB of memory (I say 2GB at least)
        * 5GB of available disk space (I say 30GB at least)
    If it's a core Duo & not a Core2Duo, then it'll only run in 32 bit mode.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the new Mac OS X SL/10.6 Install Disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."

when i try to install snow leopard with install disk, it has me restart the computer instead of installing. can anyone help me figure out how to get the disk to actually install?

Ok, it's just a glitch that it's not auto-rebooting from the disk.
Please backup your personal files off the machine to a regualr external drive and disconnect all drives before doing anything
Take the 10.6 disk out and clean and polish the bottom with a very soft clean cloth and a tiny bit of rubbing alcohol to cut the oils.
Stick the disk in and reboot holding c key down, this will make it boot from the disk and you can install Snow Leopard that way.

  • Can I re-install snow leopard instead of Lion

Can I re-install snow leopard instead of Lion

Downgrade Lion/Mountain Lion to Snow Leopard
      1. Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer Disc. After the installer
loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the
          Utilities menu.
      2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the
mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status
of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then
the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART
info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on
the Partition tab in the DU main window.
      3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions
from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS
Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the
partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on
the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
      4. Quit DU and return to the installer. Install Snow Leopard.
This will erase the whole drive so be sure to backup your files if you don't have a backup already. If you have performed a TM backup using Lion be aware that you cannot restore from that backup in Snow Leopard (see below.) I suggest you make a separate backup using Carbon Copy Cloner.
If you have Snow Leopard Time Machine backups, do a full system restore per #14 in Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions.  If you have subsequent backups from Lion, you can restore newer items selectively, via the "Star Wars" display, per #15 there, but be careful; some Snow Leopard apps may not work with the Lion files.

    Thanks steph

Snow Leopard is currently running on this MBP 15", late 2011 model, due to my need to run an old version of FileMaker.
A retail disk with 10.6.3 did not work, I restored my previous Snow Leopard install with Disk Utility.
However, it is not the shipped software and is not officially supported on this Mac. Therefore, your advice to troubleshoot Lion is the best option.

Help! I've spent hours researching this and can't find a solution...
I upgraded 3 Intel Macs in the house to Snow Leopard last weekend. All went differently...but all were successful. I found that the connection to my HP Officejet 7410 (connected wirelessly to 802.11g Airport Express (AEX) network) was "broken". Deleted then "re-intalled". Documents could now be printed. I then found out scan function was "broken". Figured out how to scan with new Snow Leopard "baked-in" driver and Scan tab...different, but it worked.
Then, tonight, on the eve of my birthday, I was given the green light to purchase an Airport Extreme 802.11n (dual-band) base station (AEBS). I set it up and got 2.5X speed on the two 802.11n laptops in the household. Glorious! Then I went to work to ensure print and scan functions were still operational. Tried to re-connect HP OJ 7410 to wireless network...when it found the network it asked for the "WEP" key (on previous AEX network I was secured utilizing WPA2/Personal)...I entered the WPA2/Personal password (same as previous network) and got the error message "Key must be 5 or 13 characters OR 10 or 26 length with 0-9 and A-F (hex)". So I turned off the wireless radio and instead plugged the 7410 into the AEBS via USB. Deleted the previous queue and re-installed. Found the printer no problem but now without the Scan tab or function anywhere...despite following all the recommendations found both on the HP site and here in the Apple Forums. I print fine. Can't for the life of me figure out what the problem with the now lost again Scan function is.
Only strangeness I can think of is the following: When setting up the network(s), I had the option of naming the 5 ghz band something different. I set mine up with the same name of the 2.4 ghz network with 5ghz in parenthesis (i.e. BobbyG and BobbyG (5 Ghz)).
Sorry for the long post but we need the scan function in the house for my wife's teaching purposes. Any assistance would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Very Respectfully,
    Bobby G.

  • Repeated panics in com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000, after installing Snow Leopard

    Hi,
now for the 4th time around, I got a kernel panic with backtraces pointing to the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 driver. The previous 4 times it crashed while beeing fully idle, today it crashed while I was using the box.
The box in this case is a Mac Pro (Early 2008), with 2 ATI Radeon HD2600XT cards driving 3 displays. Everything is running on a powerfull UPS.
In early April I reinstalled the box on a SSD drive, and at the same time I upgradeded from 10.5 to 10.6 (Snow Leopard). About two-three weeks later (12th Apr) the first crash came, and then about a month later (20th May)  again. Then 16th June, and now today, 27th June..
    Here is each panic:

As mentioned, the only change introduced to the system is the SSD, and Snow Leopard instead of old Leopard. Before the change, I've never seen this crash a single time. A few panics maybe, but nothing related to this. I don't think blaming the SSD would be fair, if that would be the case much more random traces would be expected.
I'd say that this is a bad bug in the com.apple.ATIRadeonX2000 module.
Apple, any fixes for this? Update for SL or will it be addressed in Lion?
Anyone else seen similar crashes in this scenario?

Thanks Tom but the original post title was "Work in DTP, don't install snow leopard", but of course apple were unhappy with the title. I know the issue/problem has been discussed for months, the real problem is that it shouldn't be a problem which everyone has to find work arounds for.
After 4 days of playing about, I've finally got flash CS4 working and Quarkxpress was also a big problem for a few months. Printer description (PPD) files which snow leopard doesn't like, but worked in tiger & leopard.....means I can't use my two A3 inkjets for proofing anymore.
I'm just disappointed by snow leopard

  • NEED A DIFFERENT WAY TO INSTALL SNOW LEOPARD

I bought Snow Leopard from the Store... was extremely happy to get it... I put it in my dvd drive... and found out that my dvd drive is corrupted and can't read dvds because of a firmware update. Tried for ages to get the Snow Cat in my drive but I don't know how.
I've heard ideas like installing it with a virtual cd from an external hard drive and installing it using another computer's dvd drive.
I could borrow or buy an external dvd drive but I first want to find a way to try to get Snow Leopard installed and I don't want to buy a dvd drive if I'm going to use it once and I'm kind of shy and don't like borrowing stuff from people but If i have to I will.
Does anyone have a way I can install Snow Leopard?... I have the new 10.6.3 Snow Leopard Install DVD, a Macbook, and an external harddrive with a usb connection. If someone can find me a way I would be EXTREMELY thankfull! I can't believe its right in front of me but I can't install it!!!

It looks like i might need to obtain an external dvd drive or an firewar cable.
@brody: I didn't think so either but actually this problem isn't only just with me but a lot of other people I know and online. the drive is a Matshita dvd drive with the code 857... i think. The firmware update 2.1 was supposed to reduce the noise of the dvd drive but instead it disabled some users the readibility of most dvds... this corruption came to a heavy cost at my school since they had to replace most dvd drives. It still works, it can suck in and spit out cds and dvds. it can read cds pretty well and some commercial dvds. but for some reason the snow leopard isn't being accepted. I don't think its because the drive got dirty but I might give it a clean anyway. there is no way I'm under warranty because I bought this laptop from my school but I know that the laptop was handled nicely because I was the only one using that laptop.

  • HELP PLEASE!! Installing Snow Leopard

    Hey,
So as you can probably already tell, I am having some difficulty upgrading MAC OSX Snow Leopard.
Here are the chain of events:
I first, inserted the disk, nothing happened, ejected until something started to happen. At one point the disk got spit out, so I restarted the computer and that seemed to do the trick. However, when it started installing, it said that it wasn't able to install after a good 15 minutes. So then, I thought, well I will put the disk back in in order to see the instructions of what to do in case of an error in the installation. However, I wasn't able to do that. I then tried to quit the installer but it said something about choosing a startup disk? Me thinking that Macintosh HD would be there, was surprised that it wasn't. I didn't do anything. Instead I went back to the Installer, and looked at the instructions of possibly restoring the computer.
I don't know if it was a smart idea to do this, but I am currently backing up my system trhough Time Machine.
Did I do the right thing? The Installation disk is still in my drive, and I wasn't able to remove it. I tried calling Apple Technical support but they are now closed!
I would really appreciate any advice that you have to offer
    Thanks,
    Lyon09

    lyon09 wrote:
Haha, thank you for the reassuring reply. Everything is working normally after the restoration. I am so thankful for Time Machine! However, I am a bit hesitant about installing Snow Leopard for two reasons. 1) I'm afraid that I may have a defect disk and 2) From reading around these forums, people are complaining that their computers have become somewhat sluggish.
You are very welcome. And, great.
I think you are wise to be squeamish, but moving forward having a way back to where you started is not too risky. You have a good TM backup. Also, if you have room, you could make a disk image of your current install on the drive with TM. Or, if you can partition that drive, you could make a clone or a disk image of your internal on the external. Either the clone or the disk image would provide you with an additional way to get back.
And yes, your right, I did need relax:P
On your install try, did you start up to the DVD or try running the installer having started up normally?

  • Can't erase and install SNow Leopard on old MacBook Pro

I am trying to erase and install Snow Leopard on a MacBook Pro3,1. I boot up with the installation disc, get to pick a language but then a window pops up that says "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer" and gives me the options to Restore from Backup or Restart.
I had upgraded to a 500GB hard drive on this machine which I used for months, but it is currently running off the hard drive of a new MacBook Pro that got fried. The installation disk I am using is the one I got with that unfortunate machine. Could this be the problem?
    Any other suggestions?
    Other info: Mac OS X 10.6.1 (108504)
Other History: The machine I am trying to erase and install on recently had its logic board replaced under warranty because of the NVIDIA graphics card issue. I have not found the service centre in South Africa to be very trustworthy, in fact the first time they claimed to have replaced the logic board, the computer (which had been intermittently failing to boot up) immediately started displaying the same problems. Another mac shop said to me that the "new" logic board looked so dusty that it seemed extremely unlikely that it had been replaced a week prior. Anyway, it has ostensibly been replaced again, along with a faulty superdrive.
When it went back to the service centre, they put in the hard drive of another, new, MacBook Pro of mine that got fried in an unrelated incident
Please help! I want to give this machine to an employee but
    a) want to make sure it's stable and functioning properly, and
    b) want to give it a clean slate with my personal data and settings erased.

You need a retail Snow Leopard installation disk. Available for $29 USD. http://store.apple.com/us/product/MACOS_XSNGL
Once you install it onto the old machine, you can use the setup assistant to migrate your stuff and apps from the other machine.

  • How to install Snow Leopard on a 2009 Mac Pro which has Mountain Lion?

The 2009 Mac Pro that I just bought has Mountain Lion. For many reasons, I do not want to have Mountain Lion on my machine. I have been using Snow Leopard for years and I like it fine. I have my Snow Leopard install DVDs. I cannot get this machine to accept Snow Leopard, which must be just another undesirable aspect of Mountain Lion, bacause this machine must have shipped with some variant of Leopard/ Snow Leopard to begin with. Here's what happens when I put the Snow Leopard Install DVD in the Superdrive:
    1) First, I held down the "C" key at startup to start from a disc. It showed me a window which said "Mac OS X can't be installed on this computer".
    2) Then I started it with Mountain Lion and then put in the Snow Leopard DVD. Got a window which said "The disc you inserted was not readable by this computer". It also had 3 buttons to choose from: "Initialize", "Ignore" and "Eject". So I clicked on "Initialize" and Disc Utility opened on the First Aid page. I assume I'm supposed to erase the startup disc, but I thought maybe I should ask the experts here before I do that.
This machine has two 2TB HDDs that the previous owner has configured as a level 1 RAID. If I am to erase the startup disc do I erase both drives of the RAID set? If I'm not supposed to erase the startup drive, what do I need to do to get back to Snow Leopard? Thanks and thanks again!

The built-in checks will keep you from clobbering 10.8 Mountain Lion by Installing Snow Leopard over it (literally, 10.6 Snow Leopard Installer will see a later version in place, and knows it cannot install over a later version). So it says "Mac OS X cannot be installed on this computer..." and leaves off "... "in its current state."
You will need to Install on a 10.6 Snow Leopard-erased drive. Mac OS X Erase function proceeds to install a Partition scheme and a default Volume after erasing, because a truly blank drive is useless for most Users.
When you boot to the Installer DVD, you are running off the DVD, so all Hard Drives are available to be erased if that is your choice. All data on them will be discarded. If you erase one drive in a mirrored RAID set, normally the other drive would survive and the set would be degraded. But a new version of RAID was introduced right AFTER 10.6, and it is likely that 10.6 cannot read that RAID at all under any circumstances.
