Installed SSD, now i've lost two bays.

so i finally intalled a SSD as boot drive in the optical bay, using an ODD port. I unscrewed the backplane of hard drive bay 1 to pass the sata cable, screwed it back in, and now the bay apparently doesn't even supply power to a drive (it doesn't spin up.)
should i unscrew the backplane completely, to see if inadvertently disconnected the power cable? Would i recognize it?
also, bay 2 no longer recognizes jHFS+ formatted drives. Disk utility says that (any) drive in bay 2 is MBR format. When i try to reformat, DU crashes.
Mounting an already jHFS+ formatted drive externally afterwards and the volume stays intact. But in bay 2, DU says MBR.
am i helicoidally fastened and need to bring it in to the shop?

Hi I_elephant,
Did you follow the instructions in Lloyd Chambers' Mac Performance Guide's "Installation in older Mac Pros (2006-2008) for installing an SSD in an older Mac Pro?:
http://macperformanceguide.com/Mac-InstallingSSD.html
If not, perhaps you did something wrong.

  • Installed SSD, now the fan runs a lot- what can I do?

    Hi!
I installed a 500GB SSD into my 13" Mid-2010 MacBook Pro (still running Snow Leopard) and all is well, except that I see not much improvement and the fan now runs almost incessantly despite me not running much (checking Amazon, have two browser windows open, during a very puny edit on Final Cut Pro with a single video track and stereo sound on two tracks).
Now I know that the faster SSD (and, allegedly, its greater power consumption) will make everything else work "harder" but I wonder- what can I do to improve the cooling or minimise the load on the computer?
Because it really is so notable that I am almost inclined to downgrade once more after just 12 hours.
I have reset the SMC and it did help a LITTLE but not nearly enough to prevent me from losing my only marble and wanting to do a Vincent Van Gogh.

Find the password or reset it using the lost password link

  • Install SSD, running macbook pro with two operating system and two hardrive

I am currently running bootcamp with Window 8 and Mountain Lion. I am about to install a 256gb SSD, replacing the optical drive. The partition on my current setup is 125 gb for window 8 and 125 gb for OSX.  Since this is the first time I am running a computer with two hardrive and two different operating systems, how should I go by installing (software) my SSD. Should I just make one hardrive run window and the other one run OSX. Is it possible to move the OSX partition to the SSD. Should I just install both window and OSX again on the SSD? What are some other options?

  • Installed SSD, now the fan is running at top speed

Thought I would be brave and install an SSD in my new June 2010 Mac Mini. I have done this for an older Mac Mini, and my iMac, without any problems. It boots fine, but the fan is now constantly whirling at top speed (iStat shows it topping out at around 5K revs). The only temp sensor I removed was the one attached to the HDD, which I reattached to the SSD. I am pretty sure I got the cable attached to the sensor correctly connected back to the logic board. Can one mis-installed/mis-aligned temp sensor cause the fan to max out as it appears to be doing?

Seems the answer to my question is yes. Opened up the case again and checked all the connectors, and found one of the temp sensors unrelated to the HDD/SSD had been bumped, and was slightly loose. Made sure all the connectors/connections I could see were properly seated, and now the fan is back to being basically silent (iStat shows it spinning at 1800 revs).

  • Lion just installed but now Parallels file lost?

Please could anyone give advice re Parallels drive being lost after installing Lion?  I have therefore downloaded Parallels 7 as I was using version 5 prior to the Lion.  Totally confused.....!

Do  you have an Intel iMac? You've posted this in the PPC section.
Lion would not delete any files although it might quarantine incompatible applications. Perhaps you should do some Spotlight searching of your drive. You will need Parallels 7 with Lion. The version you have been using is not compatible.

  • Steps installing SSD as second drive or bay in P775

Hi all,I have toshiba satellite P775 for couple of years and very happy with it. I am pleasantly surprise that it came with an open second drive bay drive. The SSD price has been coming down, so took this opportunity to install SSD as my primary drive and then move my old/existing drive to the second bay.  Items needed.1. Installl software that can image disk or partition to my new SSD. I choose freeware, EaseUS Todo backup.2. Get 2.5" Sata SSD drive. My old/existing drive has 2 partitions: one 100GB for OS & apps and the rest is for my data. My SSD drive needs to be bigger than my OS & apps partition so that I don't have to reinstall my software.3. I bought part K000122700 (second hhd cable adapter) from partstore.com for $40 after tax & shipping. It took 2-3 weeks to arrive because it's special order.4. I also need a very very very sharp utility knife. The cable on part K000122700 is a bit short thus I have to cut off a bit of plastics that are in the way. WARNING: may void warranty, and risky...blah blah...5. Screwdriver.6. Window OS CD. Steps:1. Install freeware EaseUS Todo backup.2. Backup my existing/old drive3. Power down PC, remove power plug & remove battery. Open both bay (primary and secondary)4. Add the new hard disk adapter, K000122700. Try to maneuver it to fit into the secondary bay. Figure out what/which plastic are in the way. Protect the cables and board around that area with thick piece of cardboard before removing the bits of plastic casing. Keep the new adapter safe while plastic trimming with sharp utility knife.5. Install the new adapter along with new SSD drive in second bay.6. Close bays, add battery and restart machine.7. Using EaseUS Todo backup, copy the OS, software/apps & settings into new SSD. I kept my data in seperate partition in my old drive. Data stayed with the old drive. More detailed info from google search: http://lifehacker.com/5837543/how-to-migrate-to-a-solid-state-drive-without-reinstalling-windows8. Shutdown machine, unplug power and battery, open both bays.9. Take out old drive and remove the aluminium covering.10. Take out SSD drive and put on the aluminium covering.11. Switch drives. Now my new SSD is in main bay and my old drive is in secondary bay.12. I've also added a bit of filler made of rolled cardboard to secure my secondary drive better. Look at picture.13. Close all covers. Add battery & power.14. When first startup, it'll ask for boot from a windows CD. Then do a repair.15. Remove CD.16. Restart. Now the startup with new SSD. Everything was a fine for me. The tougest part for me was removing the bits of plastics (step 4) because I was afraid of cutting some other cables or board nearby. Step 14 was also scarry because it took some time for the OS disk to do the repair. I also need to unactivate software license (eg: malwarebytes, norton, ....) in my old drive and reactive them in my new SSD. Results:P775-S7100 - 17.3" - Core i5 2450M - Windows 8 Pro with Windows Media Center 64-bit - 6 GB RAM. (I have updated the OS two years ago).I bought PNY Optima SSD 240GB firmware n0530a, not the fastest disk, but it's on sale for $60. Total cost of upgrade is ~$100 (SSD+2nd HD ribbon/adapter). Decent price to pay for all the performance gain with lower run temperature too. Its like getting a brand new machine with lots of horsepower (though with same cpu). Very responsive, faster boot time, faster application launch & load. Disk performance is a bottleneck that can be easily solve with cheap SSD. The toshiba dual bay makes the expansion easy. I use freeware, CrystalDiskMark to test performance. BIG IMPROVEMENT...........   Attached are my pictures.

Netlander, First off thank you for taking the time to pen this post about your intall, very imformative.  Figured I add my two cents for what it's worth for anybody else thinking about attempting this. I have the P775-S7148.  My computer is a couple years old and was overdue for a refresh, figured while I was at it I would do the swap to SSD hard drive. Stuff I ordered:Like you I ordered the little sata/Board/ribbon cable part: K000122700,  I also order a second hard drive caddy that comes with 4 screws off of Ebay, and a screw pack for the computer, 500GB Crucial MX200(which comes with Acronis), and a Sata/usb cable.   I chose to do the factory refresh, then clone method, easy business. 1. Make a list of all your programs, verication keys etc and gather up all the software you'll want to re-install.2. Back-up all your important files.3. On the P775 hold down 0 when you start the machine and follow the instructions.  It'll boot into the Safe Mode screen, select start normally and it will take you to the screen you'll need. follow the instructions.4. Once windows is re-installed, I installed my anti virus, and downloaded Acronis.5. Next I plugged in my new external hard drive into the usb cable and cloned the drive.  After that it's standard business of install your software updates etc. Computer Install:1. Unplug power, remove battery.2. Remove the L shaped center panel and the 2nd removalable panel next to it.(At this point I studied the computer case and the little sata board that was ordered and it was obvious this part was meant to be installed in this computer.  So instead of cutting plastic I opted to open the case up and install the card properly with two screw from the screw pack I ordered.)3.  Remove every screw you see on the bottom of the computer,  there's a silver screw underneath the primary hard drive that needs to come out to remove the keyboard. 4.  You'll need to remove the keyboard, start by using a thin knife and pri from the outside forward corners closest to the screen it will lift up and pop out.5. Disconnect the touch pad ribbon cable.6. The case just un-snaps from there, easy business.  Be gentle though.7.  Since you have case open might as well clean your fan and cooling fins, the fan is removed via one screw.8.  Once you have the top case open you'll see a small space where this little card you purchased needs to be installed.  Route the ribbon cable through the little slot it needs to live in and connect it to the motherboard.9.  Ok put your computer back togethor, don't forget to lock the keyboard ribbon cable or all your key will decide not to work very well, yup I screw that up.10.  Next install your new hard drive in the new caddy, take your old hard drive an install it into the secondary slot, it locks inplace just as Toshiba designed it,  the screw on the hard drive caddy have slots they lock into.  No need for spacers, both covers have built in spacers that also prevent the hard drives from moving away from the sata connectors. Your done!  Install your software, do the million windows updates, and your golden.  My computer runs better than it ever has, this SSD config is the way to go.  Love it. Thanks again Netlander for your inspiration!  Cheers!

  • I installed Windows 7 and did not realize I had to uninstall iTunes; now I've lost my database setup.

When I installed the Windows 7 operating system, I did not know that I was supposed to Uninstall iTunes, and then reinstall my database after I installed Windows 7.  Now I have lost my iTunes database; however, I still have many .wav files on my computer, but all of the files are arranged by "Artist"; when I click on an Artist, I get the "Albums" listed for that Artist; when I click on an Album, I get the "Tracks" (.wav), preceded by the "Track Number", (space), "Track Name".
Does anyone know if I can "Batch", search the Internet, and recreate my original "iTunes" database from the .wav files that are contained on my Music Library, External Drive "H"; and, my backup external drives "G" & "I"?  I may have additional tracks on these drives that are not included in my basic Music Library; after I include all of the .wav files on my external drives, I plan to delete all duplicate files.  My basic iTunes Program is on my Drive "C", along with my "Temporary" Audio Files; I plan to delete my Temporary Files after I recreate my Audio Library on my "H" drive.  If this is possible, could someone give me "step-by-step" instructions to do this operation.  If this is not possible, please let me know, so that I can start downloading my CD's again.
I have approximately 3400 ".wav" files on my computer, and I feel there must be a way to re-build my Audio Library Database, without importing all of my individual CD"s again.
Thanks for any help you can offer to accomplish my mission.
I don't want to search my computer Drive "D", because I use this drive Exclusively for my Audio Restoration files.

    Hi John,
A major drawback with using wav for storage is that it doesn't carry a tag. This means that in the event of a corrupted library the only information remaining is the filename. Other data may be stored in the path but iTunes doesn't know how to get it. I understand that you need this format for your workflow with Diamond Cut, but that makes it all the more important that you backup your iTunes database on a regular basis.
Provided that you still have the tracks in their artist and album folders and haven't let iTunes "reorganise" them you should be able to restore some useful metadata using my script TagFromFilename. The script reads the path and filename, and provided these are in the normal layout of <Path>\<Artist>\<Album>\## <Name>.<Ext> can restore Artist, Album Artist, Track Name and Track Number. If your files have a different but predicatable layout with the same information, e.g. the data is all in the filename, then I could create a suitable version of the script to get the data into iTunes. I recommend you disable both the Keep... and Copy... options in iTunes advanced preferences before adding files to the iTunes database. Ideally you also want a complete backup of your correctly structured folders in case you need to pull copies back from it.
As stated earlier, uninstalling iTunes before the upgrade wouldn't have helped. The crucial thing before any upgrade is to backup all user data from the drive that will be wiped. Typically the iTunes database lives in C:\Users\<User>\Music\iTunes on Vista or Windows 7. The crucial file is called iTunes Library.itl. You seem fairly certain that you don't have a backup database that you could restore but an exhaustive search of your hard drive for files of the form *.itl might still be worth doing. If you find any apart from the active library we can discuss how you open them to see if they are useful.

  • 5.1 update - Now I can't sync my music and it lost two folders of "spoken" category

5.1 update - Since updating I can't sync my music and it lost two folders of "spoken" category in music folder. Refuses to sync it though I see and can play it on my computer. Help! Any solutions?

I realize this is a dumb question, but as I said, I am not computer savvy.  After the download was complete, no pop-up box occurred prompting the install, so as you said, I clicked on start to try to search for the download of it.  What do I look for to find the download of the new itunes version?  I am embarrassed to be so dumb about this and appreciate any help I can get. Thanks.

Apple IDs cannot be merged. You should use your preferred Apple ID from now on, but you can still access your purchased items such as music, movies, or software using your other Apple IDs.

You are going to need to change the email address you use with your old ID. Once you have got access to your old account you will then log into both accounts at the same time on your Mac and transfer your data to a single account. We can do this later, but need you to get access to your old account first.

I had to re-install OS X recently and lost iPhoto and other ilife apps. Do I have to buy them now?, I had to re-install OS X recently and lost iPhoto and other ilife apps. Do I have to buy them now?

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
This is normal. OS X doesn't come with iLife apps, so you have to reinstall them after reinstalling Mac OS X.
If your Mac came without DVDs or you purchased it after July 2011, you have to install the iLife applications from the Mac App Store. Open the Mac App Store, log in with your Apple ID, go to Purchases and download GarageBand, iMovie and iPhoto free of charge.
If your Mac came with DVDs and you didn't purchase the iLife apps in the Mac App Store, insert the Applications DVD and install the iLife apps. Then, open  > Software Update, and install the latest iLife applications version
