Installed Tiger and it erased my internet settings

How can I restore my settings and get back online. I tried putting in my ISP address and other things and it doesnt seem to work. I live in Germany and they arent familiar with Macs so T Comm hasnt been much help in correcting the problem. I have a LAN line and i connect wirelessly to our network- we have 2 PCs in the house and their internet connections are fine. So I dont know how to fix it. Can anyone help me? Thanks Nicole

basically it works the same in 10.4 as 10.2, just a little different places...
What is the IP numbers of your PCs?
What numbers did they give you?
For instance, here's a piture of my TCP/IP settings when connected to a Wireless Router that has the built-in address of 192.168.1.1 and distributes IPs in the range of 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.199, though I've manua;;y set this machine to 192.168.1.107 for other reasons.

I know you're frustrated, but not knowing how much you know or don't know, plus not having particulars to deal with is the only problem I think.:-)
We can do it!

  • I installed Tiger and now my printer/scanner won't work

Hi. I installed Tiger and now my multi function printer/scanner/fax is not recognized by my computer. I have the Brother MFC 420 CN. I downloaded some drivers and such which I thought would resolve the issue, but still it does not work. What can I do? Thank you.

    According to this page:
    http://www.brother.com/E-ftp/macosxstate.htm
The MFC-420 CN is not listed. Sounds like you have a printer whose driver never was updated. Contact Brother technical support and ask them to fix that issue.

  • Installing Tiger AND Leopard

Help! My macbook pro has been acting funky.
    1. It won't let me install updates because it can't find the folder "/".
    2. Every time I launch word, it thinks it's the first time.
    3. Front row thinks I'm not connected to the internet when I clearly am.
The guy at the genius bar suggested re-installing the OS that came with the mac (Tiger) and then my current OS (Leopard). Everything is supposedly backed up with Time Machine. If I put the original OS Tiger CD in, will everything be wiped out? I'm a little nervous about the whole thing.
Can somebody please help? Thank you!
    Jolivet

The first thing I'd try is a Leopard archive and install (after repairing the folder permissions and verifying the disk with Disk Utility). That will not erase your data.
Can you explain why the genius suggested you install Tiger first?
If you can't archive and install, then the next option would be to install Leopard with an erase and install. That will definitely erase your data (it erases you hard disk), so all you have left if your Time Machine backup. When you fist start up the Mac with the new Leopard you should plug in your Time Machine backup disk and when asked, specify that you want to restore from a Time Machine backup.

  • I installed Tiger and now my ibook runs like a turtle...

messaging hardly works and freezes often and when i use internet software, it goes OK for a few minutes, then freezes and quits. I have a 10 gig drive so Tiger takes up more than half, but i do not have an older version of OSX i can install. Help, please!

    bbarefoot:
If I may, I suggest that you try to work through the issues before considering a reinstall. Reinstallation should be the avenue of last resort as it is the ultimate invasive strategy and will not necessarily solve the issues and can sometimes cause complications.
What I do recommend is that, if you do not already have one, you should make a backup of your HDD. The ideal way to do it is to backup to an external Firewire HDD using a utility like Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper to clone your internal HDD to the Firewire HDD.
Take a look at the Dr. Smoke's FAQ I linked earlier, if you have not already done so. It does offer good ideas.
In addition, I am not aware of what maintenance procedures you use. Here is a link to an excellent article by Gulliver: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=607640&#607640

  • Just installed Tiger and having problems

I just installed 10.4.3 with an Archive and Install. Since then I have had a host of problems and tried a variety of fixes. Some have worked yet in general the machine freezes or slows down to an incredibly slow pace. And then I have to restart.
    What I have done:
    Initial Archive and Install
    * Office 2004 products not working, restart cpu, get blue screen
    * Start up in Safe mode and get rid of MIcrosoft Office Database Daemon in Start-up Items
    * Computer restarts but still sluggish have to Force Quit
    Other problems:
    Printing to Epson Printer
    * Get a message "the printer "(null)" could not be found in your list of printers.
    I don't have a printer "(null)"
FYI - I am printing via Airport and have added the printer to the list and picked the driver.
I switched to Mail and ical because of the Entourage problems.
    * Mail seems slow and when I am loading a simple no attachment message, I get a spinning wheel.
    * Mail Help window has disappeared.
    Safari/Firefox
    * Slower loading than 10.3.9. Spinning Wheel.
    What I have tried:
    * Fixed permissions
    * Booted from the Tiger disk and repaired the disk. No repairs were done.
Each of these steps solved the problems immediately but as soon as I start multitasking between mail, Office 2004, Safari everything is slow and often ends up Force Quitting at least on program.
    What would you do next?
    1. Should I reinstall 10.4.3 from the disk with a Basic install? And then upgrade to 10.4.6 to see if that will fix my problems?
    2. Or should I do an Erase and Install? (which I am trying to avoid?)
The majority my work is done in email and Office products. Thanks in advance for any help or advice that will get me out of this quandary.

  • IBook G4 can't install Tiger and "Invalid memory access"

My friend recently bought an iBook G4, came with Panther 10.3.9 on it, he has been trying to install a retail version of Tiger on it and
At first the installer would pop up, he'd go through the steps and then it would prompt him to restart but once it had rebooted nothing had changed, still in 10.3.9.
Then he restarted with Alt, and tried to boot from the installer disk and he got the following message "Invalid Memory Access at % SRRO: 3132636c % SRRI: 40003030"
He was then prompted to type "mac-boot" to restart and upon restarting he got a folder icon with a question mark, which I understand means the HD couldn't be detected but it still booted up anyway.
    Any thoughts? :/

I'm not sure what that error message means, but I am wondering if the hard drive might be beginning to go south. If you open Disk Utility, is the S.M.A.R.T. status verified? If the drive is the original, then it could well be getting to the end of its useful life of 3-5 years, even if it is still working after a fashion.
Did your friend get the original Panther system discs? If so, it might be a good idea to run the extended version of the Apple Hardware Test and see if anything shows up.
One thing to try is to boot from the Tiger install disc and then navigate to Disk Utility. Since this iBook is a recent purchase, it may be that there is no data to save. If so, your friend could go ahead and erase and reformat the disk before proceeding with the installation.
If Disk Utility cannot erase and reformat the disk or if the disk cannot be seen, then it will likely not be possible to install anything.
Also, be sure the RAM meets the minimum requirements for Tiger.
    Good luck!

  • Installing Tiger and classic on an external drive

I'm trying to install Tiger so I can run classic on an external drive to play the one or two games that are still not compatible with X. When I boot my Tiger install DVD on my Powerbook G4, it goes in to Open Firmware.
    Any suggestions??

Well...I posted here cause I have leopard on the machine, and thought it was related.
    anyhow..I have a Powerbook G4 1.5 Ghz.
I thought for sure I had booted from the Tiger retail DVD before. I guess i'll need to look for my Powerbook discs (wish me luck).

  • Gray G4 disks for installing Tiger and iLife--usable? legit?

Hi. I "waded in" to this forum to look for the answer to my question. I got all the way to page 7 with no results before I decided to post this question.
I have seen on eBay what the sellers say are "full installs" of Tiger and iLife 06. But in order to use these (gray) ibook G4 disks, you have to have a G4 ibook. Unless—
that is, if you have a Mac that is capable of running Tiger but is not an ibook G4, you can use these disks along with a 3rd disk—included—called "Adapted Universal Install DVD".
Has anyone had any experience with this product? More important—are these things legal?

and iLife 06. But in order to use these (gray) ibook G4 disks, you
have to have a G4 ibook.
Not true unless the iBook computer build is the same as the install package was or is intended for. The install package that ships with a new Mac purchase is model and build specific and cannot be used to install Tiger on another Mac unless the model and build are identical.
Unless—that is, if you have a Mac that is capable of running Tiger
but is not an ibook G4, you can use these disks along with a
3rd disk—included—called "Adapted Universal Install DVD".
I've never heard of a disc called "Adapted Universal Install DVD" but I don't recommend wasting your time trying to save what amounts to a few bucks only on claims this Tiger install package will work on your Mac. If it doesn't work (and I don't believe it will), you will be out the money spent via eBay on false claims and have to spend additional money purchasing a Tiger retail install package.
If you want or need to install Tiger, don't waste your time on this and spend a little more money up front to purchase a Tiger retail install package.

  • Clean install - can I save my old internet settings for wireless router

I am upgrading to Leopard with a clean install. My only concern is that my sister got my computer hooked up to our wireless router ages ago and I'm afriad I won't be able to get back on wireless afterwards.
Is there a way to backup this information, these settings, to my external drive to reinstall once I've done the reinstall?
    Thanks!

    sarah steegar wrote:
uhhh, I think the 2nd thing you said...
We bought a wireless router to work with our pre-existing internet service. She had to put in some disk and go to some website with a bunch of numbers as an "address" and type in some stuff. Something about WEP keys and such (that I obviously don't understand enough to remember clearly). It was quite a hassle is mostly what I remember.
Yes, it can be. The web page is probably the configuration page for the router. The disk suggests she might have had to install some software to get it set up. You would need to reinstall that, I think. It also sounds as if she configured the router from your machine. Although the router is now configured, you don't want to lose the ability to re-configure it if necessary.
I'm going to suggest that you write down as much configuration information as you can.
Are you in a position to make a bootable backup - to clone your current system? You need an external drive big enough to house your system and which is suitable for use as a boot volume. I would strongly recommend this before upgrading in any case. If anything goes wrong, you can always boot from your backup until you sort the problem out. I don't know what sort of backups you keep - you mentioned an external drive but I gather you are backing up just selected files to that.
What kind of router do you have? Are any other computers sharing the connexion to the internet?

  • Erasing TM using Airport Utility erases printing/internet settings, too?

If I use Airport Utility and under Disks choose Erase, will this erase all my internet and wireless printer settings too? (My fingers are crossed that this isn't the case...)
Also, I have my iMac connected via ethernet and wirelessly. When I turn off Airport then the ethernet connection kicks in automatically. Am I correct in assuming that if I were to erase everything and start new, I should just keep Airport off (= is there anything in Airport Utility that I should do)?
On a slightly different note, Safari doesn't work when I connect via ethernet (only FIrefox does). Is there anything that comes to anyone's mind that would cause this? I have turned off TCP/IP - Configure IPv6 but that makes no difference.
    Thank you so much.

    I really appreciate your responses.
    In response to:
So the TC is not the devise generating your network? You have another wireless router? Then ethernet only is fine. In Airport Utility change Wireless to "OFF" and Internet to "OFF (Bridge Mode)".
TC is the device that I use for my wireless network (I do not have another wireless router, only an AirExpress in the living room hooked up to speakers). Should I change Wireless to OFF in Airport Utility only during the initial re-backing up of my data? When finished with the re-backing up of my data, should I change the settings? Will this interfere with my printer and AirExpress in the other room?
I'm sorry, I didn't realize it was only connected temporarily for the initial full backup. Then don't change any setting other than, turning OFF Airport Preferences (NOT Airport Utility) while connected to ethernet. Then, yes, turn it back ON once the backup is complete and you are no longer connected via ethernet. The idea here is that by turning OFF Airport Prefs while connected via ethernet, you are assured of the fastest connection speed to the TC. Otherwise, wireless may still take precedence and slow down the transfer.
    In response to:
What do you mean by "Safari doesn't work?" Please be precise and as informative about the issue as possible.
It's strange... When connected by ethernet, Safari does not load. It just hangs. Firefox works without any problem. Since my iMac is right next to Time Capsule there is no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly. I use wireless only because I prefer to use Safari. Any ideas at all?
Now, I'm a little confused. Do you intend on keeping the Mac connected to the TC via ethernet permanently since you say "no need really for this computer to be connected wirelessly."? If that's the case, then In Airport Utility set Wireless to "Create a wireless network" and Internet to "Share a public IP address".
    Cheers!

  • Installing tiger has messed up my postfix settings

A long time ago I downloaded postfix and set it up to smtp emails from a domain where I do not have any other outgoing mail server. This was under 10.2.8, which doesn't include postfix as part of the OS.
Since I installed 10.4.3, I can't send mail from these accounts, which I assume is because tiger has overwritten my postfix installation.
Anyone help me out how to sort this out. Its so long since I did this I really can't remember how I got it working.

May I ask what editor you used? The only thing I can think of is that it might have introduced Mac-type line endings instead of unix ones. It is pretty easy to fix. If you used vim or pine or emacs or some unix type editor, I doubt that is what happened. If it is textedit, or some other Mac-ish editor, it MIGHT be what happened, but it is pretty much a blind shot in the quail field.
You see some ^M in the file if you display hidden characters or more the file or vi the file.
If it does happen to be mac line endings, it is pretty easy to fix, so don't worry (yet). You can issue
    sudo perl -pi.bak -e 's/\r/\n/g' <filename>
That changes them to unix line endings if they are in there, and creates a backup of the original file with a .bak suffix (which you can later discard if you are comfortable with the changes.
If that is not what happened, I am stumped.

  • Unable to install IOS4 - and now unable to restore settings

    Hope someone can help
I downloaded the new IOS4 software last night, and as it was about half way through installing the software it stopped. The blue bar just stayed where it was and on the phone itself it, I had the white apple logo and the bar indicating it was installing.
I left it on all night, but, still no further progress. I had to disconnect the phone from itunes, then do a force quit. It asked me to reconnect to itunes, which I did, then when it was trying to restore factory settings - the same thing happened - when the blue bar was half way a long it stopped.
Any ideas whats wrong and how can I fix it?
(I have the 3gs and an iMac with Snow Leopard and it was the latest itunes.)

I have fixed mi situation... Apparently it's not the .ipsw file or the iphone itself, but the iTunes installed on my computer.. I got up and went to another Mac here in the office, updated the iTunes on that Mac, copied the .ipsw file from my Mac to user/library/itunes/iPhone Software Updates (if you don't see the folder on the other mac copy the folder too) and then started the process of upgrading my iPhone... It was painless and right away. Afterwards I synced the iPhone with my Mac and iTunes and got my apps into my 3GS with iOS4! Good Luck.
    P. S.: That other Mac has 10.5.x installed, mine has 10.6.4
