If you had stored your catalog files on an external drive, then all you have to do is double-click on them to open them and use them.
Or you could move them to the internal drive and double-click on them once the move is completed.
To create a single catalog file from multiple ones, you could use File->Import from Another Catalog

A blank drive needs to be formatted first, you do that hold c boot (or hold option key boot) from the 10.6 install disk (or Lion USB)

  • I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? Is there a single HTML file I should be looking for on my NAS?

I had all my files, including bookmarks, backed up to my NAS when my hard drive failed. How do I import these bookmarks to Firefox on my new notebook? I can easily find the folder "Favorites" on my NAS, but can't get Firefox to "see" this folder, or my bookmarks.

If you open Firefox then Firefox will always use the default profile folder as found via profiles.ini on your system drive.
You either need to import the file in your current default profile or copy the file to your current profile folder while Firefox is closed.
Firefox 3 stores the bookmarks and the browser history in [http://kb.mozillazine.org/places.sqlite places.sqlite] and no longer creates an HTML backup by default.
There are also (five) JSON backups in the bookmarkbackups folder within the Firefox profile folder.
You can either copy the file places.sqlite to your [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_folder_-_Firefox Firefox Profile Folder] or import the most recent JSON backup from the bookmarkbackups folder of that old profile.

If all your files are missing
You may have logged in as a different user, such as Guest. Open the Users & Groups pane in System Preferences. Your name should be at the top of the user list, under Current User. See also this support article.
If files are missing from one folder
Change the Finder view mode; for example, from icon view to list view, or vice versa.

  • How can I import Firefox bookmarks, now stored in User folder on same (new) PC, into Firefox?

How can I import Firefox bookmarks, now stored in User folder on same (new) PC, into Firefox? I have exported the Firefox bookmarks from my old PC into a [Windows 8] folder on my new PC.
When I use the Firefox import facility, it will only import one bookmark at a time - and then it bookmarks all the main pages on the bookmarked website, not just the one which I originally bookmarked. It also does not import the information stored in the bookmark tag.

    Sure thing.
    # Open the run dialog by holding the Windows key and pressing R
    # Type <code>%appdata%</code> into the run window and press ok
    # Open the ''Mozilla'' folder
    # Open the ''Firefox'' folder
    # Open the ''Profiles'' folder
    # Copy the folder that is located in this folder to a USB drive
    # Install and run Firefox on the new computer
    # Close Firefox
    # Repeat steps 1 to 5 on the new computer
    # Open the folder that you copied from the old computer
    # Copy the contents of that folder into the folder located inside of the new computer's profile folder
    # Allow Windows to replace any duplicate folders with the ones that you are copying onto the computer is prompted

  • Installed Thunderbird on New drive but can't transfer emails and address books drom old drive to new PC.

I have a computer I built that my dad who uses Thunderbird for his email. We had to remove the C: drive, which was a SSD drive because it was running out of space and replaced it with a Western Digital Veloci-Raptor 500GB drive. I am not familiar with Thunderbird and did not export his emails or address book before I switched the drives. I have set his new Thunderbird account to keep the mails on the server and not the PC. How can I get the old emails and address books from the old hard drive. I did copy the Thunderbird folder from the C: drive and the folder on the E: drive that Thunderbird was installed to. I have read many forums on how to move emails and address books to or from Thunderbird but non are like my situation. Hoe can retrieve the emails and address books from the previous install and transfer them over to the new PC once I have done a reinstall?

first the old drive... the location varied between windows versions but it is either in Application data or appdata. In vista and above open the roaming folder. Both are hidden folders so you need to show hidden files and folders in Windows. Within that you will find a Thunderbird folder.
The sub folders of that are the profiles, but simply copying the Thunderbird folder over it's like in the appdata\roaming of Vista and above will replace the existing with the old.
Copy the actual profile in the folder called profile XXXX.default xxxx being a random string will place two profiles on the hard disk which can be opened individually using the profile manager. http://kb.mozillazine.org/Profile_manager
Finally individual folders of mail can be moved using the import export tools. https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/thunderbird/addon/importexporttools/ You just need to locate the data. Folders are a file with no extension and another with the same name and an MSF extension. They are in sub folders of mail in the profile.
    Address books. see http://kb.mozillazine.org/Moving_address_books_between_profiles

  • Installing OS on new drive

I am intending on installing a new hard disk to replace the smaller 80GB drive that came with the server. I am not sure what files to copy over, and I am worried that I will loose my LDAP settings. I have already saved all of the user home directories to another, larger, drive, but I am not sure if there are any 'hidden' files that need to be copied.
I will also be installing OSX leopard on the new drive once copied to replace Tiger which is on there now. Any help/advice is appreciated.

    The less disruptive upgrade is:
    0. make a bootable backup to an external disk (just in case anything goes wrong)
    1. buy a new larger drive
    2. buy an external drive case (or use the old disk with carrier when in step 1 you order an Apple drive module)
    3. boot from 10.4 install CD
    4. start disk utility
    5. create a partition on the new drive (better to give it exactly the same name as the old one, when the old disk was named Server_HD, name the new one Server_HD)
    6. restore the new drive from the old drive
    7. set the new drive bootable (better remove the old drive or blank it)
    8. reboot the machine from the new drive
    9. when everything runs fine, and only then, I would start the upgrade procedure to Leopard
This would give you the least unwanted changes.

  • Installing OS on new drive but selling Mac?

    Hi there
I’ve just upgraded to a new 27" iMac and I’m going to sell the old one (spec below). I need to replace the hard drive because its faulty and want to sell the Mac with Mountain Lion installed.
So firstly, I don’t think the new drive is formatted in anyway (WD 1TB Caviar Blue). So after I install the new drive will disk-utility from an old Snow Leopard disk see the drive in order for me to format it, ready for the OS install?
And secondly, If I then install Mountain Lion and delete myself as the main user and create a new Admin user, will future owners of the Mac be able to update and upgrade the OS without my details?
    Thank you in advance.

You can't do that because it will always be associated with your Apple ID.
The proper way to "clean" a computer before selling it is to zero the hard drive. This will make all your data irretrievable.
Steps for zeroing the drive Disk Utility:
    1. Insert your Mac OS X CD-ROM disc or Restore DVD disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key until you see the spinning gear.
    2. Once started up from CD or DVD, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu.
Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from disc to access Disk Utility.
    3. Choose the entire disk (top icon).
    4. Choose erase tab.
    5. Click on Options
    6. Choose "write zeros".
    7. Erase
This will take a bit of time because the computer is physically writing zeros to each block.
You should then re-install the original OS from the system disks and deliver the Mac to the new owner with the system disks that shipped with it.
If you want it to boot as new at startup, do the installation of OS X and follow the onscreen prompts until it asks you to enter a username and password to create your first account. Quit the installer and shut down the system. The next time the system is powered on it will display the same welcome message and be ready to setup OS X.

  • Why can't I re-install CS4 after new drive installed?

I had a hard drive crash.  Had a new hard rive installed at computer repair store.  Had any recoverable files installed on new drive.  Removed any remaining CS4 files recovered.  Went to re-install CS4 and it won't install.

  • Install 10.6 New Drive Migrate from Original Drive

I have a Mac Pro running 10.5.8 on it's factory original drive. What I'd like to do is install 10.6 on a new drive and migrate my account with all settings and apps to that new drive. Both drives are installed internally on the Mac Pro ready to go, Leopard Install disk at hand and waiting.

A much better step would be to
1: Clone the existing 10.5 to a Disk Utility HFS+ journaled formatted external drive using the free Carbon Copy Cloner
2: Hold option and boot from the clone, check it out. Disconnect.
3: Upgrade 10.5 to 10.6 on the orignal drive using the 10.6 upgrade disk, see how everything works (if not you can hold option and boot from the 10.5 clone and even reverse clone if necessary)
4: If the 10.6 upgrade went well, then clone that to the new larger drive (formatted HFS+ journaled first of course)
The reason for this is you avoid ANY issue with using Setup or Migration Assistant, which isn't exaclty perfect or even close.
You also get a external clone as a backup.
If your thinking, "I'm going to install 10.6 so it's fresh" all that goes to HELLO when you use Setup or Migration Assistant, you migrate all the crap from 10.5
If you really want a fresh install of 10.6, you need to do 10.5 install first so you get your free iLife, then upgrade to 10.6, then install programs from original sources, finally just copy the files from the 10.5 drive.
If your doing what your doing to optimize/defrag the drive, cloning back and forth does that as CCC copies folders/files alphabetically via the root directory.
