Installed Windows on second HD (SSD), now extremely slow

I put my new SSD in the main hard drive slow and installed Windows 7. Then put it in the optical drive spot and put the original drive in it's place.
Now when I boot into Windows 7 it takes about 10 minutes and when it finally loads it freezes every few minutes.
Any suggestion?
Is there another way to install Windows? I want to have my OSX on original drive and Windows on second SSD.

I believe it's 2011 Macbook Pro.
I opened Bootcamp assistant and created Windows USB. Then it recognized that I have a second internal drive and I clicked continue. It created BOOTCAMP partition on SSD and restarted but went nowhere.
Then I read online that certain Macs don't boot off USB. So I put my SSD drive in the main hd slot and put the optical drive back. Then I booted through Windows 7 install CD and installed Windows on SSD. Everything seemed to be fine and I was able to boot to Windows.
I took the optical drive out, put SSD in its place and put the original HD back to original spot.
Now I am able to see Windows and OSX through REFIT and can boot into Windows but it is extremely slow and always freezes. I actually think that OSX became slower too.
Not sure if this was the correct way to install it so any suggestions are welcome.
BTW the SSD drive is brand new, so I highly doubt that it has issue.

Hi all , i'm new on the forum but i'm not new on the IT world. I have a quick question about my new ideapad s400. It came with a 32 gb SSD . I was think for better boot perfomance and overall system response on install windows 8 on the SSD and use the 500gb HDD for storage. But i have two questions.
I manage to look up some cloning process , but also with some failures because of windows safe boot and other features. There is some Lenovo toll to make this clone process more easy . The second is , it is worth to do this i mean i will notice some diference?

Go to the Windows Control Panel and select Boot Camp applet. In that applet there is a Boot Drive option. Select Mac OS X.
Or restart the system and hold down the Option key for a few second. A Boot Menu screen will come up. Select Macintosh HD.
Once in OS X go to the Sys Prefences, Startup Disk and select Macintosh HD Mt Lion 10.8.2 and click Restart then Restart again. the system will now restart in Mac OS X.
To boot back to Windows do the same, Startup Disk, and select Windows then Restart and Restart again.

Installed Windows 7 on my IMac, now I can't get Apple OS to work, I have tried booting with Snow Leopard disc in and nothing works. I had trouble from the start but now nothing works except Windows 7, sound wont work etc. etc.

I originally tried installing Widows 7 so I could run my Flight Simulator X on the IMac I got from my daughter and I used BootCamp and had partitioned it at about 4GB for windows and the first thing I got was I had to put a bootable disc in and neither the windows 7 or Snow Leopard would work. Then I got Windows 7 to work but I can't get Snow Leopard to run, when I put the disc in it says that it not supported. Of course windows wont show me anyother areas of the disc that I could try to get to, the other side of the partition I guess. I have tried holding the C key down on reboot and that doesn't work. I hope this gives you a little more insight as to what is going on. Thanks Bill

H8-1240ef - installing Windows 7 on a ssd drive

Hi,
I have a HPE h8-1240ef with a 1 TB SATA III drive.
I would like to add a 64 GBytes SSD SATAIII Drive in order to install Windows 7 on it , to increase performances.
Since we do not have a "Windows 7 installation CD" with the HP machine, I do not know how to install Windows 7 on the SSD drive and swap the bootable volume, to have the SSD Drive viewed as C: Drive.

Hey Grboutin,
You will need recovery discs to recover the system. But you will need a 160GB SSD as the minimum size to recover the system using recovery discs.
You can create the recovery discs on your PC, just type in Recovery in the start menu and Recovery Manager should show up. Follow the instructions to create the recovery media either on DVD or a thumb-drive.

but - the key is - ANY SSD will not work, you HAVE to have a 160GB or larger to recover to. Otherwise you will need to purchase a retail version of windows.

Installing Windows 7 on Replacement SSD in optical bay Early 2011 MBP

So i just bought a 120gb SSD and a optical bay enclosure that i installed into my early 2011 MBP. I also bought a optical drive external usb enclosure. I was hoping that I could use bootcamp to install Windows 7 onto the SSD but when i go through the bootcamp menu and my laptop restarts im stuck with a blank black screen. Ive also tried using bootcamp to create a bootable USB (which i had to do a work around to get to work because it supposed to only work for MBA) that didnt work. Can anyone help?

I installed Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, now there is no sound.

I have a HP 620 Laptop pc, WZ257UT#ABA. I installed Windows 8 Pro 64 bit, now there is no sound.
I tried all the downloads, including hard reboot. Defaulting bios,etc.
Any possible solutions? I need this going by DEC 24.
Everything else is working fine that I can tell.

More than likely it is a driver compatibility issue with Windows 8.
Did you purchase your notebook before or after October 1, 2011? If you purchased it prior to this date HP will not be producing drivers for the notebook, but the hardware manufacturer may. If the product was purchased after that date you'll just need to watch the product's software and driver page for the drivers to be released.

assuming it is an optical mouse (no ball etc.) then there aren't any moving parts involve in the motion detection
so there's a faulty component or connection
from what you describe it could be just a loose/broken connection, so if you know someone familiar with electronics see if they can open it up and have a look

Error Installing Windows 8.1 on SSD which is in place of macbook pro's SuperDrive

I'm trying to install a regular copy of Windows 8.1 pro on an SSD on a Macbook Pro mid 2010. The SSD has been mounted replacing the old, unused SuperDrive with a support to add another disk.
After starting the setup and formatting the disk to be ready for Windows 8.1 i press continue to start the actual setup but after few seconds an error 0xC0000005 appears. I've never had problems installing windows on this mac, now i'm completely puzzled.

but I guess the bigger problem will be that the internal Superdrive is replaced and that there is not support for installing windows from an external optical drive if you had an internal drive before. Or am I false!?

Trying to install windows on second internal HDD, keep getting black screen?

I recently took the optical drive out of my 15" 2011 Macbook Pro, and replaced it with a second hard drive. I want to install windows on this second hard drive. However, when I try to do this through boot camp, it simply goes to a black screen with a blinking white cursor and stays there forever (presumably). I am using a windows install disk run out of the optical drive that came with the computer, which is now connected via a usb encolsure. I am running OSX out of my new SSD, which is in the main hard drive bay. The old hard drive that came with the computer is now in the optical bay. I have successfully installed windows from this disk onto my computer using boot camp before. Why is this not working, and what can I do to fix it?

Swap back and remove the drive that will not be used for Windows.
Booting from external DVD or devices is not supported.
The Mac Pro has of course had multiple hard drives and always easy but needed to remove other drives. Windows does not install if it sees a drive with GPT even though not the drive Windows is targeted to use.

How to re-install windows 8 on my ssd msi ge60

I bought this msi ge60 a few months ago. I suffered windows update problems because of the nvidia card error and as a result i wanted to install a fresh copy of windows. Now originally the windows 8 is already installed on my ssd. I just wanted install on it again. I have had made the recovery disk however while recovering though disk one an error arises and says the installation was unsuccessful. When i go to my desktop and open my computer i see that the recovery infact tried to install windows on the HDD instead of the ssd drive.
I used the second recovery option which avoids formatting all the drives and an error arisies which says "1. Make sure the disk partition layout is factory default setting. 2. Make sure the current OS HDD is in the master HDD place."
What to do now? recovery disks wont work and neither will the f3 function :(
EDIT: I cant remove my hdd for fresh installation as it will void the warranty while i remove the cover

You can use a usb thumb drive or an external optical drive. IMO it is easier to use an external usb optical drive, no creating images, making the thumb drive bootable, or copying ISOs onto the thumb drive. External optical drives are cheap.

Trying to install Windows via Bootcamp (dual SSD, optibay)

I have an MBP 17" late 2011. I am running Lion 10.7.4. and I recently bought two Samsung 830 Series SSD drives to put into the MBP. I want to put one in the The second one I want to go into the optibay, so I bought a drive caddy. I am not able to install Bootcamp because I don't have an optical drive. I've tried a few software mods, such as adding 'mbasd=1' and here (www.codez4mac.com/forum/viewtopic.php?uid=225402&f=212&t=61921&start=0) to create a windows 7 USB install disk on Lion, and here (sudo pico /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.Boot.plist) to try and get the external superdrive to work and others I've seen on various communities, but nothing seems to work. I can't use the Parallels route because my version of Windows is an Upgrade version.
A few things you should know: (1) I was able to get the superdrive working on my MBP using the software mod above, and I was excited to finally get Wondows installed on the second SSD. However, when Bootcamp goes to install it, it hangs at a black screen with "_" blinking infinitely. I feel like I'm close to finding a solution, but so far no luck. I'm close to just packing up the SSDs and returning them, even though I really like the performance I see.
I am not a beginner, but I am not an advanced programmer, so if you have ideas or fixes, please send them my way.
Here is the set up I want to accomplish:
1) Set up Bootcamp partition on second SSD. Drive #1 will be Lion, drive #2 will be a file store with Bootcamp partition also.
2) If using Bootcamp I can use my upgrade version of Windows. I can do this the traditional way of installing the older version, then the upgrade of Wondows, or simply install the upgrade version clean, then immediately reinstall it as an upgrade and the activation is clean. Before I get any grief on that, there are two things: (a) I've installed Windows several times on other machines this way and it is best because it is a clean install and (b) this was recommended to me by a MS technician when I had to call in a while back.
3) If/Once Windows is installed on MBP's second SSD (optibay), I will be using an external USB superdrive or a USB DVD/CD drive I own.
In trying to work all of this out over the past several days, there are a few observations I have:
A) I am baffled that the USB Superdrive won't work on anything except Mini and Air (even though I got it to work). I don't want to hear the "reasons" Apple does this, becuase I should be able to boot from ANY USB drive, like any other computer. What happens if/when my MBP's superdrive gives it up and no longer works? Drop another $2500+ on another computer?

Middle of night but fwiw as long as you don't have two drives both using GUID you can do this. But you can't during install have OS X on A and Windows on B. Get Windows installed you will have to wipe out the one with Lion or disconnect it or something. Then reconnect or restore w/ Carbon Copy Cloner.
Format the one with Lion to MBR
BCA is not needed when you are not splitting a drive between both Windows DVD can be used to format the entire SSD.
Are you familiar with Carbon Copy cloner?

Problems installing Windows to my new SSD

I got a brand new 250gb SSD Samsung 840 Evo hard drive for christmas and have run into a lot of problems trying to install it. I am currently using a 500gb HDD drive in my hp pavilion dv6-7024eo with Beats audio edition.
First i tried using the Samsung Data Migration software but it wouldn't boot when i tried it. The Windows can't find a boot device error so on to idea number 2.
Then i cleaned my SSD with diskpart and attempted a clean install. Set up my windows 7 64bit and it worked. I updated my windows and when it restart it wouldn't boot. Now I got the error code that no hard drive is connected, I then opened up my laptop and double checked all the connections. After that I tried to boot up again and now my good old friend the "Windows can't find a boot device blabla".
Then I formatted the SSD... again and tried setting up windows... again but now the installation won't complete.
So my questions are..
1) Is there something I need to change in the bios so that the SSD will work?
2) Do I need to update my Bios Version? Currently F.29 from Insyde
3) Is this a known problem ? Has anyone cracked the problem ?
4) Is my computer simply not compatible with a SSD upgrade?

1. Is your BIOS ACHI or legacy? It should be in ACHI setup and does the the BIOS see the drive?
2. That you need to check on by using your P/N at HP driver support site to see if there is a BIOS update.
3. What do you mean known problem? That a very general problem question that will be hard to define.
4. You said you were able to format it with Windows 7 that would mean it did work.
5. This could be that your boot up process isn't setup to make the SSD as the main boot drive. This is something you need to check on your BIOS setup.
6. Never do a diskpart on SSD just use Win7 and delete all the parition and format Win7 is already made for SSD.
7. This sounds like a bad Setup in BIOS thus it doesn't see the SSD as a boot drive you need to go and double check the BIOS settings again.

Installing windows on second internal drive

I've just started taking a course in datamatics, and therefore I need to get my hands on a windows computer for class. I currently own a 13" 2011 Ultimo MacBook Pro
I have previously changed my old HDD with a SDD, for better performance and with great results. Instead of buying a new computer as resolution, i figured i can buy second SSD and a SSD-adapter to replace my super-/disc- drive(*). Basically i thought, that I could install the new SSD, and download Windows 8.1 from Microsoft's online store, and install that on the new SSD. But i am beginning to worry, if I am going to run into any complications with the installation of Windows. If I download windows on my "old" SSD, will it not be able to install on the new one? Or is Bootcamp just gonna consider the two SSD's as one, and not have a problem transferring the installation package between the two of them?

There are a few Macs which come with a second disk (SSD/HDD). These are Mac mini and MacPro. Bootcamp Assistant understand the configuration of the Mac and possible combinations. If you replace the Optical drive and use an Optibay adapter and an SSD instead, Bootcamp assistant will not use the second SSD to install windows, because for that specific Mac model, the original configuration is a single HDD/SSD, not two.
The second issue with this configuration is due to the SSD and SATA speed differences between the Optical drive and SSDs. SATA III SSDs do not work well in the Optibay. This causes a lot of pain during Bootcamp/Windows installation.
The only solution that works is by using an SSD/HDD in the main bay (without a second drive installed. Leave the optical drive in instead, because most Macs with an Optical drive require a DVD with few exceptions as documented in Boot Camp 5.1: Frequently asked questions - the ISO question) and then moving it to the Optibay, and installing a second SSD in the main bay. Please see Unable to Install Windows 8 on secondary Hard Disk for details.
I suggest leaving the original configuration intact, install Bootcamp, and then move the disk containing Bootcamp to Optibay. Please be aware that SATA speed issues should be addressed before an SSD is bought. There are few SSDs that can work with SATA I/2/3 (Samsung 840 Pro being one, but not the EVO line, which has its own firmware challenges).
In the case of Mac mini with Fusion drives (or two HDDs), Bootcamp will only address the second drive, and will not install properly on the SSD/first HDD. The workaround to use the SSD requires buying Winclone.
In the case of MacPro, the only drive which should be in the MacPro (Generation 1) is the designated drive, all other drives should be removed prior to Windows installation. Please see Re: How to install Windows 7 on extra Internal Disk.
You can start a new thread if you want to try the Bootcamp installation in the original configuration and then move disks.

My MacBook Pro just turned itself off while installing Windows 7. It has now got a black screen with a white flashing bar in the top left corner...what can I do?

I was just installing windows 7 onto my MacBook Pro. I selected to have 200GB for Windows and the rest leave for Mac.
I clicked install and the bar filled up as it should do. However, once the install had completed, my MacBook turned itself off. I assumed this was normal. Now, my MacBook has a black screen with a white flashing underscore in the top left corner.
What is wrong and what should I do?

Hold down the Option key when starting up then on the sceen that comes up select Mac OS X to boot from.
The Win 7 install didn't go well and is hung in some way. You should use boot camp assistant to remove the win partition and start over.
Make sure you are using a Retail version of Win 7. A Branded OEM version, like ones from Dell and HP, will NOT work to install Windows 7 on your Mac.
