Installed Xfce but get Gnome login screen

I installed Xfce (only) but when booting up I get a Gnome login screen. Why? Is there a way to make it a Xfce login screen?

..because you have installed GDM.

Hold down the Shift key on Restart, right after the startup tone.
That will boot into Safe Mode, which will run some disk checks and clear out some caches. If it boots, then restart normally and see what happens.

I've never transferred from a PC, so I don't know what Migration Assistant would have done. I can't imagine it would have transferred anything over that would do any damage to the system.

  • MacBook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. Tried to start in safe mode but get the same screen. The only thing different was that I loaded the zedge sync app yesterday. Now getting this problem.

Macbook pro will not boot. I get the gray screen, an apple icon and spinning wheel. I tried to start in safe mode, but get this same screen. The only thing different is that I added the zedge update app to do a sync for adding ringtones to my apple cell phone. How can I get a good boot. I am fairly new to apple computer.

Reset PRAM: http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4405 and then try a normal boot.
Run the Startup Manager to select Startup disk:  http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1310
If those did not work your disk may be sick or dying.  The top priority at this point is to make a backup copy of your data.
Check the health of the disk.  Boot in Recovery Mode (Boot, Command-R).  Run Disk Utility.  Click on the upper left disk icon.  Does the S.M.A.R.T. status say “Verified”?  If not the disk/SSD is unhealthy and needs to be replaced.  Even if it does not show “Verified” you can still attempt a backup.
Click on the icon indented below, usually called “Macintosh HD” and Verify Disk.  If it finishes with a green “OK” message then all is well with the disk.  If it shows errors in red then you have found a problem to address once the system is backed up.  Do not attempt software repairs until you have secured the data.
If the disk will not show up at all in Disk Utility as your ran the tests above then it may be dead or it may have a bad internal SATA cable.  A trip to an Apple store for confirmation would be in order.
If you have an external disk drive you can use as a backup drive then do so.  If not Google “Hitachi USB 3.0 external hard drive 1TB” to purchase one or go to a brick-and-mortar store (including an Apple store) to pickup one.  Any 1 TB external drive will do.
Assuming it is still breathing you can try to recover the data without booting from the sick disk.
Reformat the external disk.  (This will erase all data on the external disk.)
Boot in Recovery Mode.  Start Disk Utility.  Plug in the new disk.  Select it’s disk Icon (the second one down, left justified). Select the Partition tab.
    Partition Layout > Single Partition
Name: Emergency Recovery 1 (or whatever name you wish to use)
    Format: Mac OS Extended (journaled)
    Options… > GUID Partition Table > OK
    Apply
    Select the Restore tab.
Drag the old system volume (Macintosh HD) to Source.
Drag the new disk volume (Emergency Recovery 1) to Destination.
    Click on Restore.
It may take a long time for the backup.
If that will not complete post back for other emergency data recovery methods, including those from a brody.
If the backup succeeds, use the First Aid tab in Disk Utility to select the old volume (Macintosh HD) and Repair Disk.  If it does not finish with a green OK message try to repair it once or twice more.  If it repairs with a green OK message, will it boot normally?  If not, boot from the Recovery Partition and reinstall OS X.
If it is still not healthy, post back for further instructions.

  • To see pay method I tap on View Apple ID but get a blank screen. Why? iOS 8 iPad

I Tap on Settings, iTunes and Apps store, tap on my Apple ID to show View my Apple ID. I tap on View my Apple ID to bring up payment method but get a blank screen.  How can I correct problem? I have turned iPad off and on With no improvement.

Not sure what would cause that.  You could try a simple reset to see if that would help (hold the power and home buttons at the same time until you see the Apple logo, then release).  If that doesn't work, you can always review and update your payment information from your other device.  If your computer is signed into your account you can also do it from there (see iCloud: View or change your iCloud payment information).

    Hi Bruce,
Please open registry by typing "regedit" in the Run window (Windows + R)
Now, navigate to "HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\acrobat\shell\open\ddeexec\application and changing the Key from "AcroviewA10"  to  "AcroviewR10.

DO NOT RELEASE BUTTON until you see picture of iTunes and plug
    5. Release Home button.
    ON COMPUTER
    6. iTunes has detected iPad in recovery mode. You must restore this iPad before it can be used with iTunes.
    7. Select "Restore iPad"...
    Note:
    1. Data will be lost if you do not have backup
    2. If you did not do step 4 properly, start all over again.

    please help!
    thanks in advance

    1. I have tried copying the Keyboard/Trackpad/Mouse drivers to the $WinPEDriver$ directory with mixed success on a 2012 MBP.
    2. My experience is based on a 2013 rMBP. You may be able to use an Apple USB Keypad/Mouse to better success.
    3. See http://www.macworld.com/article/2460820/macbook-pro-mid-2014-review-minor-update -offers-slightly-better-cpu-performance.html for HW differences between the two machines.
    4. If you have access to a 2013 rMBP, I can suggest trying to build the USB on that and working with the USB to see if you can make it install Windows. the rMBP 2014 and rMBP 2013 have the same HW, except some CPU changes. You can also try building the USB at the nearest Apple store, if possible.
    5. There is a section in AutoUnattend.xml, which is supposed to install all drivers in $WinPEDriver$ (see this http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686316 )

  • [SOLVED] GNOME login screen freezes after 3 seconds

    Hello,
today I installed Arch-Linux the first time. I had some issues during the installation (following https://wiki.archlinux.de/title/Anleitu … Einsteiger (its the german version, seems to differ a little from the english version)), but everything went good until I installed GNOME. Now the login screen freezes everytime after quite exactly 3 seconds, unless I press [strg]+[alt]+[f2] fast enough to switch in tty2. Then the screen will only freeze when I switch back to tty1. Once the screen is frozen, I can't switch to tty2 anymore.
I think the problem has something to do with my nvidia hybrid graphic system. During the installation I installed the packages bumblebee, bbswitch and primus, but uninstalled them because I thought they could be the problem. But although I uninstalled the packages, the "Stamina-Mode" status led is turned on after the system has started and the "Speed-Mode" status led not. I think that's a little bit strange, because I can't imagine which process is controlling these leds.
    So I ran just
    pacman -S xorg-drivers
and I had to create the xinitrc-file (because I could not find this file in /etc/skel). Now the default GUI appeared after I ran
    startx
(I saw some windows and a clock). After that I installed gnome, changed the xinitrc-file in my userhome and got the freeze after a reboot.
I don't know if it has anything to do with my problem, but I get the following error-messages everytime I boot:
[drm:ibx_irq_handler] *ERROR* PCH transcoder A FIFO underrun
[drm:intel_dp_start_link_train] *ERROR* too many full retries, give up
[drm:ilk_display_irq_handler] *ERROR* Pipe A FIFO underrun
interl ips 0000:00:1f.6: thermal reporting for required devices not enabled, aborting

P.S.: Because I'm a total beginner at linux I probably missed the most important informations, but I can give you more if you tell me how

Ok, I could solve the problem myself by installing the latest nvidia driver. Now I guess the intel grahic card is not used anymore, but I don't really know...

  • GDM loaded and active, but not showing login-screen.

    Hello Archers!
At the very beginning I would like to say "Hello" to all forum users!
I recently started using Arch Linux, after moving from Win8.1 to Ubuntu and then to Arch. I've went through a struggle of installing proprietary AMD graphic card drivers and finally managed to get it working. Although that was achieved with a little sacrifice - GDM stopped working. I can still run Gnome with "startx", but I can't get login-screen to work. Any ideas what happened and how to get it working?
I'm using xorg115 and proprietary AMD graphic drivers.

    EDIT
    Tried symlinking
    /usr/lib64/dri
    to
    /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules
And made that error in Xorg log disappear. However, gdm is still not working. I'm getting stuck at
[ OK ] Reached target Graphical Interface.
I can still log with other tty and startx manually.

  • Imac 2008 Snow Leopard installed, Wont go past the login screen

    Hello Everyone,
I am new to this so please bear with me.
I had been using my Imac lately just to run the sims 3 with extension packs which I played for about 10 minutes.
Today we had our internet connected as we have moved to a new house.
The Internet service provider has said the connection should be up and running today.
I went onto safari and checked two or three emails after that my mouse and keyboard could not do anything.
No force quit, No command based force quit, no relaunching of the finder, no being able to restart or shut it down at all.
I remember an echo back up mac thingy jumping up and down too in the dock if that helps
So I turned it off using the back button and left it off for 5 minutes. The mouse and Keyboard are wireless and run fine at the moment, no flat battery.
    First attempt
The screen turned on right up until the galaxy looking screen before te login box, the login box did not appear. There was no other way to turn it off other than from the back again.
    Second attempt
I had left it off for another 5 minutes and turned it back on again, The login screen has appeared, I can type in the password,
but this time when I pushed enter, the rainbow wheel appears and has stayed on there for the past half an hour.
    Third attempt
I will switch off the modem, leave the computer off for another 5 minutes and then try anf log back in. Since I will be disconnected to the internet I will update you with the progress and whether this has worked or not.
This begun to happen as soon as I entered the password for the internet connection. This macbook (late 2008 not pro) detected the connection from the imac (another computer is trying to access your internet connection-sort of thing) and I pressed ok on the macbook. The model of the modem router is D-Link Wireless N300 ADSL2 Modem router if that helps.
The mac desktop has had an install of snow leopard (so I can not do a restall/reinstall thingy of the current operating system) and all I can find at the moment is the original disks from the box. The mac was originally on 10.5.8.
Please help me to fnd a way in which I can get back into my computer this would be much appreciated.
I am not familliar with any technical terms so please keep it simple as I am a noob :3

    Third attempt
I will switch off the modem, leave the computer off for another 5 minutes and then try anf log back in. Since I will be disconnected to the internet I will update you with the progress and whether this has worked or not.
    Update:
This time I switched the computer off from the back as there seemed to be no progress made from the rainbow spinning wheel.
I left it for 5 minutes (the computer) switched off the jack and pulled the plug out.
I turned off the modem for 5 minutes.
I turned on the computer without turning on the modem and was able to log in.
I managed to get into the computer and am currently trying out safari to see if the same problem occurs.
5 minutes into hotmail, trade sites and you tube it seems to be going OK.
I guess the computer paicked abit from the new connection perhaps.

  • Client takes a long time to get network login screen from server

I have just installed the new xserve with 10.5.1
    I have configured DNS
My problem is that my client 10.5 takes about 1 and a half minutes to get the network users show up on the login screen.
I have searched through the system logs and found the following. Don't know if these have anything to do with the slow client but it is a start. If anyone can shed some light on this I would appreciate it. Thanks Bails:)
    following are some error messages

I just guess hete based on the first two logs entries that the server is unable to query DNS. All sorts of DNS lookup failures are a common source of such long timeout errors. It might be because your DNS is not set up right or because the DNS server is not accessible to the server (incorrect routing rules or network settings in general).

  • Can not get to Login Screen. Possible User Account or .plist Corruption?

I was helping a client who is upgrading both her desktop and a laptop machine. She had already started the process and she had used the migration tool to move her user account from her old G4 to both her new Mac Pro and MacBook pro. So basically both new machines were now clones of the old G4 which was running Tiger.
Everything was going well and we were busy doing some other stuff when I suggested to her that she should set up a secondary user account on each machine. This is something I suggest to users, because I have seen user accounts get corrupted, and if that account is the ONLY account on the machine, you are not going to be able to do anything on that machine (easily). At least with teh other account, you can log in and see the drive, etc.
So she set up a new user and also enabled fast user switching and I was about to show her how the whole user switching works, but when we choose to log out of her current account, the Mac went to blue screen and just got hung up. After much waiting we had to force a hard shut down. Upon restart we see the Apple logo and then go to the blue screen, but we never reach the login screen.
I wrote this off as a fluke, but also told her that I am not to comfortable with that and decided to completely wipe the drive and do a fresh install of everything and not use the migration assistant. All is well with that machine now.
So we moved on to the Mac Book Pro and we repeated the same addition of a user and upon logout it did the exact same thing. So by now I am sure that something in the library form the old G4 must be corrupt, because both of these machines were basically clones of that one. So we are probably going to do the same thing to this one too, but I was wondering if I could learn something from this.
Assuming that some .plist is corrupted, ( probably the com.apple.loginwindow.plist) I was thinking I could access the drive through target mode, find that. plist and delete it. But then that made me think, if I were to delete it, what would the Mac do at startup if it sees no .plist of the login screen or user accounts?
Also, is there a way to alter the login options through single user mode. So for example I am quite sure that it is the .plist for the log-in options that is corrupted. So if I could change the login option to automatically log into her account, thus bypassing the login screen, I think we can bypass this issue for now.
    Thanks.

First you don't delete the suspect .plist, you move or rename it. Deletion is down the road a piece
Second, when the system boots, it recreates any missing .plist files, presuming nothing else is wrong.
Many, including myself, have dragged the entire Preferences directory onto the desktop and rebooted without a problem.

  • After upgrade imac won't get off login screen

My harddrive died on my imac 24" mid 2007 and I replaced the harddrive. I chose to migrate my data from an external drive. After waiting for all of that, my password didn't work, so I find the solution in the forum and was able to log in.
Everything was working fine...able to change the password. When I checked for software upgrades, it said to upgrade to 10.6.8 (from 10.6.3). I did that.
Now my imac loads, asked for my password, starts, goes to blue screen, and then comes back to login screen.
I have tried all the special keys to launch from my install CD, whatever, and get the same result...it always ends up at the login screen.
I can't get the computer to launch in safe mode or anything...just the login screen...so I'm basically stuck.
Does any one have any ideas or solutions? I would love to just format the drive and forget the migration, but can't even do that.

You can't boot off the DVD? Try holding down the option/alt key during a restart and see if you can select the disk there to boot from.

  • Won't get to login screen.

Okay. I am trying to turn my iMac on, first power on, it held at the grey screen, nothing happened, so I shut it down by holding the power button after about 10 minutes of nothing. I turned it back on again after a few minutes, and now I get the grey screen with the Apple logo as well as the spinning gears, but it holds there. Won't get to the Leopard login screen.
I popped the install disc in, ran disk utility and repaired permissions and the disk. All is fine. I then restarted it, reset the PRAM. And then after resetting it, let it start up, same thing.
Not sure what is going on.
Anyone might be able to shed some light onto what is wrong?
    Thanks
    Jordan

Yeah, I've tried taking out all the USB devices, that was what I thought was wrong first. Nothing worked...
Trying the Command-V thing got me a bunch of stuff I could barely read let a lone write down, but some things I was able to catch are:
event logs /seventsd out of sync with volume
    kernal freed its link data
saved a bunch of crash reports
IOUSB Interface match category does not exist
also, EHCI root hub simulation match category IUDefault matchcategory exists
I appreciate the link, ran through all of that and still nothing. I've let this guy sit for the longest of 10 minutes, and it still holds there. I can't even get to the login screen.
It would be no big deal just to reformat and re install, but I haven't backed up in about 3 weeks, so a lot of new pictures my wife has uploaded will get lost that are only on the computer...
This happened, I just updated my Parallels to the newest build to fix all the Leopard bugs. And after updating, it wouldn't process and work. So I quit everything, couldn't even force quit Parallels, tried restarting, and everything left but my desktop pictures, for about 15 minutes, so I did the hard shut down. And since I can't get it back to on past that grey screen.
Im lost, never had a problem like this before.
