After the iMac hung on the message and a "OFF button push reboot", I attempted to run Safari and the icon bounced once and the app did not run. "Safari Broken" couldn't surf the net.
I replaced the safari app file with an original 3.04 from a memory stick and rebooted and it ran the next time around.
Other attempts days later produced the same results. Safari Broken

  • 10.5.2 The Installer could not install some files in "/"

I have tried to upgrade my Inter Mac Mini Core Duo 1.66 to 10.5.2.
I ran the install through software update and proceeded through the 2 restarts. Once my mini restarted I checked "about my mac" to find that it still said the system was 10.5.1
I ran software update again to find that on trying to install i now get the message
Install Failed - The installer could not install some files in "/" please contact the software manufacturer for assistance.
I then tried the same with the combo updater and got the same message
I have tried to verfiy my disk or repaire permissions using disk utility for it to completely hang with the spinning beach ball and causes finder to crash.
I have also booted up with the leopard disk in and tried disk utility which says there are no problem with the disk but disk utility in leopard still hangs
    Can anyone help??
Is anyone getting the same problem?
    Thanks

I'm having the same problem installing the Leopard Graphics Update on my Dual 2.5 G5. Installing 10.5.2 went fine, but afterwards the graphics update would fail to install, with the same error message you got. I tried both Software Update and downloading the standalone installer.
But wait, there's more! I also can no longer repair permissions using Disk Utility. I get the following message: "Error: The underlying task reported failure on exit." Booting from my Leopard install CD does allow me to fix permissions.
Lastly, my second internal hard drive is now also behaving oddly, Any time I try to drag a file to the Trash, I get a dialog box telling me: "The item "(file name)" will be deleted immediately. Are you sure you want to continue?"
I've run DiskWarrior from the CD and tried fsck in Single User mode (no errors found). Nothing seems to help
I had no problem updating to 10.5.2 on my MacBook, but the update to my desktop has been a real booger. Anyone who can offer any input, I'd sure appreciate it.

I've been trying install the 10.5.3 update, but keep getting this error message:
"The installer could not install some files in "/". Contact the software manufacturer for assistance."
I tried software update AND downloading the update for manual updating to no avail.
Anyone know how to solve this?
    Thanks,

I have never heard of this problem, but try repairing permissions with Disk Utility.

I am unable to install 10.5.4 on my Intel iMac. I have rebooted multiple times, disconnected all external drives including my printer and tried the installer with no success. I have not found anything pointing to why on the forums. Any assistance would be helpful.

You should be able to install Mac OS X 10.7 or later on your 2011 MacBook Pro without issue, if it came with 10.6.3 as your signature suggests.  Mind you, any 2011 MacBook Pro must use the original 10.6 installer disc labelled MacBook Pro if it desires to have 10.6 installed on it.   The retail installer disc will not work on that model, nor will one from another age MacBook Pro, or other model labelled installer.  Also
10.7 came both on USB Flash drive and Mac App Store installer versions.   Both required either 10.6.6 minimum be pre-installed, or no Mac OS X operating system on the drive or partition it was to be installed on.
10.7.1 through 10.7.5 combo could be installed only once 10.7 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.7.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.8 came only on Mac App Store installer.  It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
10.8.1 to 10.8.5 combo could be installed only once 10.8 had been installed.  A combo update is available for installing on top of any version of 10.8.  Otherwise only the preceding version could be updated to the next.
10.9 came only on Mac App Store installer. It is available only to 10.6.8 and later users.
Both 10.9 and 10.9.1 had a serious security vulnerability, which only 10.9.2 addressed.
10.9.2 combo could be installed only once 10.9 had been installed.
For all three Mac App Store releases, the partition to be installed on had to be GUID partition formatted according to Apple Disk Utility.

If I boot to the "Recovery HD" I get a message "Installation Failed, Try re-intalling" Which would be a fine idea, but I can't because if I re-start installation from the hard drive I get the above errors.
I've burned the "InstallESD.img" to a DVD, but it also doesn't seem to work. Comes up as though I'm in the Reco

    Jen,
Here's what I did to get Lion installed:
Burn the installer to a DVD and install from there. It worked for me. Here's what you need to do:
First you need another computer running at least 10.6.8.
    1. On the other computer go to 'App Store' (make sure you're logged in to the App Store with the AppleID you used on the troubled computer)
    2. Click on 'Purchased' in the 'App Store' window's toolbar
    3. If you are on 10.6.8, and haven't downloaded Lion on that computer just click "Install" to download the installation application.
    3. a, if the other computer is already running Lion, you'll need to re-download the installer.
    3. b. Hold down 'Option' when selecting 'Purchased' then you click "Install"
    4. When the Lion Installer starts up, just quit it. You want to work with the Installer application.
    5. Find the "Install Lion OS X" application in the 'Applications' folder.
    6. Hold down 'Control' and click on the application and select 'Show Package Contents'
    7. Find 'InstallESD.dmg' which is in the "Shared Support" folder and copy it to your desktop.
    8. Burn 'InstallESD.dmg' to a DVD ('Disk Utility' is simplest to do this).
    9. Put the new install DVD into the computer that has Lion partially installed and reboot holding down the "C" key.
    10. run the installer as normal, selecting your harddrive as the target.
In my case, when it rebooted to the harddisk the Lion installer started AGAIN. If this happens, let it run. Then you should be done.
    Hope this helps.

I had the same problem this weekend.  The iphone 4s needed Itunes10.5 to sync to her Asus Windows 7 Laptop.  When I tried to download from the Apple website I got the error that the windows installer was missings files or something like that.  I uninstalled itunes and tried again but that didn't work.  Then I redownloaded itunes 10.3 just to have a working version in case I gave up.  Then I found site that suggested I update Windows by going through the start menu and while doing that I found an update Apple itunes file.
Goto Start and type Widows Update in the seach window.  Click on check for updates (I already was current with all updates but I suggest you download the updates if there are some available.
Goto start and this time just type update in the search window.  Look for the Apple itunes update link and click on it.  It found there were updates for itunes 10.5, Quick time, Safari, and Icloud.  I checked all the updates except for Safari, since we don't use it (yet).
The install started then seemed to stall at one spot for ~3min but then completed successfully.  I open itunes and had her synced with Outlook Contact, Email, Calender, and Notes in 5 minutes.  I did already configure Outlook by going to tools and Trust Center.
    I hope this works.

I have tried to upgrade Painter 11 on my iMac running OS x 10.5.8 but get the error message : The following install step failed : run pre install script for Corel Painter11_SP1. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance "
I have contacted Corel and after several emails and one telephone call, they tell me , they cannot help but they think the problem could be with the OS.
Does anyone have any suggestions, please ?

Could be many things, we should start with this...
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu at top of the screen. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    5. Click Repair Disk, (not Repair Permissions). Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then try a Safe Boot, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
(Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.)
If perchance you can't find your install Disc, at least try it from the Safe Boot part onward.

    C,
I ran into the same issue. Make sure your apple device in disconnected from the computer. It interrupts the itunes download. Disconnect and make sure itunes is closed, then try installing again. Remember that even though you close of itunes, it is often still running in the background. To make sure it's closed, click and hold the mouse on the itunes icon and select quit from the drop down menu. Then try installing the updated itunes.
    Hope that helps.
