Installer Disk Will not Quit and Will not Eject. Please Help!

I did a really stupid thing today: I tried to install Leopard on my iBook G4, not thinking/realizing that it needs more RAM than it has to be able to install it. Now, 10 hours later, the installer disk will not quit and I can find no way to eject it. I have shut down the computer several times and then restarted while holding down the mouse button, but the **** thing just starts cranking away again. At some point, I was able to pull down and choose Quit for the Installer; eventually, a thing came up giving three options: I think they were "restart" "choose startup disk" and "don't quit." I followed the directions that also appeared and clicked "choose startup disk." It has continued to chug away for the past hour after doing that. Is there any hope that I can
a. recover my poor little iBook
b. recover the Leopard Installer Disk? I sincerely hope not to have to buy another one!
Thanks.

There was another thread on this very topic recently, and many things were tried, but I don't know if anything ever worked and I was unable to find that thread.
However, here is something from the MBP forum that sounds like it might also work for an iBook:

  • Disk utility not completing, please help...

Hi everyone, I'm trying to erase an external drive I've had for a while. I formatted it once with no probs. I've hooked it all up via USB, gone to disk utility, clicked the volume, clicked erase, zero out all data, selected "journaled" from the drop down list, clicked erase. It get about 90% done, which takes about 2 hours (80gb drive) then just doesnt move and i have to force quit.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Phil

If that HD has a FireWire connection, try Disk Utility with that configuration.
If it doesn't have a FW connection, then you can try these steps. Unmount the ext HD, power it down, and disconnect it. Boot the computer with the install disk, select your language, and, when the menu bar pops up, select Utilities, and repair the disk and permissions. If you get a clean bill of health, then quit DU and select Utilities->Startup Disk->G5 boot volume and click Restart. Reinstall the 10.4.9 COMBO update, after restart, launch Disk Utility, and repair permissions. Shutdown the computer for at least 30 minutes. Restart it, hook up the ext HD, and give Disk Utility another whirl.
Another option is to get a FWHD. They're much faster and more reliable than USB.

I purchased a film on iTunes and sync to Apple TV (1) and the film will not play say not authorised please help?

This problem seems to have started around October 28, it appears to affect content purchased only on other devices but played on the Apple TV 1.
There have been other workarounds suggested from time to time, but I have found the simplest solution is to purchase something on the Apple TV 1 directly (There may be free content in some locations and this appears to work just as well).
Once the content has been purchased, it will not only play as normal, but will also allow all other content purchased on other devices after October 28 to play as well.
Some have reported that it's necessary to restart the Apple TV before and/or after purchase, but I found it worked without.

  • Installer Disk Could Not be Found

I tried to install Windows 7 RC on my Boot Camp Assistant, but after I click "Start Installation", the message "Installer Disk could not be found" appeared.
    Note:
The disc is recognized already, i.e. I could see the DVD appearing on my desktop.
I downloaded the 64bit ISO, and burnt it into a DVD.
Any idea in the solution to troubleshoot? Thanks!

I have the same problem only with the 32-bit ISO. Is there a way I could do the installation from an SD card or an external hard drive? Or, is there a way I can boot from the DVD I burned?
I used a DVD+RW disc if that makes a difference. I will try burning the ISO image at half speed as I've seen recommended in other topics.
I burned the ISO image to the DVD using the MacBook Pro if that makes any difference I can try burning it from my HP laptop when I get back home next week.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

  • Bootcamp: installer disk could not be found - but MAC desktop can see it

    Hi,
I have an iMac intel - 17" 1.83 GHz that I put together from a box of junk. Mechanic friend took it all apart, don't ask. Installed a new hard drive of 1 terrabyte. The internal optical drive does not work so we got a new Iomega optical drive that works just great.
We want to run Windows XP Pro on this iMac - and after updating all of the software in Mac (OS 10.5.8), and running Bootcamp set up assistant, partitioned the drive to 500 GB MAC; 500 GB PC, got this error message saying that the Windows XP installer disk could not be found.
The disk appears on the desktop. I can click on it and see all of the pc files in it. I clicked on a couple of the files and got a simple text document of gibberish. But the set up assistant in Bootcamp still doesn't recognize the disk. So I have been unable to install Windows.
The disk itself is a burned copy from my university that gave me a full license for Windows XP Pro, SP 3. It's 32 bit. And it shows up as an install disk when I pop it into a PC.
I've run Disk Warrior and Disk Utilities to repair permissions and to check that the new hard drive is ok...and it's all set.
I wonder if this is because of the external dvd drive that I'm using. I can use my Macbook Pro and get the imac into target mode. But don't know if this will have me continue to bark up this tree.
Has anyone had success with the same kind of problem that I'm not facing? Thanks much in advance.
    Sheila

I too got a version of Windows 7 64 Professional from the the Microsoft Software Distribution Network through Uni. I burnt the iso file on a PC to a DVD with power ISO and then tried to use it as the install disk. After some umming and arrhhing Mac OS X recognised it, the installer started, allowed to select language etc, then suddenly a box appears announcing that a required cd/dvd drive device driver is missing.
I have rang up apple support and they are pretty much saying it is a disc quality issue, but I have checked all the disc drive regimes and permissions and they all seem to be fine. I have also done it with multiple brands and a number of times, everytime the same message returned. All the latest firmware has been downloaded. One thing that was briefly mentioned by the guy at Apple support was that there was the possibility that it may be the "logic board". So the previous poster may be right. They said this was unlikely, but everything is possible. The drive works for everything in the OS X side though, so has pretty much stumped me and the Apple support people. I think the only option is to take it to an Apple shop and let them see it for themselves, not really an option for me as I need the Mac Book to write my dissertation, due in about three weeks so can't afford to lose it.
Sorry if I have slightly "jacked" the thread, but the issue sounded pretty close to mine. Any resolution or insight into what might be the issue would be amazing.
    Regards,
    Duncan

  • Installer disk could not be found bootcamp problem

    Hi everyone,
I am trying to download windows 7 on my mid-2011 iMac with bootcamp assistant. After selecting the option "Save a copy on an external drive", downloading the WindowsSupport helper, and partioning the disc and clicking install, it comes up with "The installer disk could not be found". Could someone please help me come up with a way to solve this problem please.

Please help, i movie is not exporting or sharing movies, it will closed unexpectedly please help?

    Hi Videoframe
This was emailed to Apple Support on 23 DEc 2012 at 09:50 Eastern Australia time.
"I continued to talk to other Apple Mac users on iMovie….Interesting to have found out that their movies were made using iDVD without any known issues as yet…Looking at the results from Apple Support Forum and Youtube, problems appears to be when NOT using iDVD. I and many others can't understand how these many technical problems were overlooked by the programmers of iMovie. One would have thought iMovie problems have been iron out prior to getting rid of iDVD. By the way when I first contacted Apple Support back on 16th Nov, I was told I need to RE-INSTALL my computer…..that I did and in the process my iDVD was removed and never was re-installed.
May I suggest you delegate a junior person or someone string together a project consisting over near 1700 images, approx. 25mins of video footage, titles and including with and without transitions then export the project.
I am still in the dark as to what is being done about this extended non result. I am not sure if is known by the people who is in charge of this iMovie programme. it would be nice to get some sort of feedback. Not sure if I should refer this to a third party to do the testing?? I am sure Apple's competitors would love to make a mockery of this.
There has to be a time frame for this to end, as I and many others can't simply sit here in the dark and wait for someone to come back for a solution, this could be months or years who knows.  As you can appreciate I am not the only user anxiously waiting for a solution.
I guess I am in a way representing other worldwide users in pursuing a solution on this matter ASAP. I therefore ask you to please make this a priority if this is at all possible.
    Many thanks."
I've been corresponding to them since Fri 16th Nov on and off without a solution.

  • Has any one come up with a solution to the "the disk was not ejected properly" when using time machine with an iMac and seagate back up drive?

I recently bought an iMac and love it.
Only proplem I have is I keep getting an error message "the disk was not ejected properly"
Everything is backing up fine on my Seagate 2TB external USB drive.
Each time there is access on the seagate and it stops in between needing to back up again I get this message.
    Can anyone help?

    The drive is malfunctioning.
If the drive has more than one interface (USB, FireWire, Thunderbolt, eSATA), try one of the other interfaces.
Check that the data cable is securely inserted at both ends.
    Try a different cable.
If you're connecting the drive through a hub, connect it directly to a built-in port on the Mac.
If you're connecting it directly, try a different port.
Disconnect all other devices on the bus, or as many as possible.
If the drive is bus-powered, but has an AC adapter, connect the adapter.
If the drive doesn't work under any of the above conditions, it has to be replaced. You may be able to salvage the mechanism by removing it from the enclosure and installing it in another one, or in a drive dock.

  • Disk was not ejected properly comes up when I start my computer. I'm running 10.7.5 and have not ejected any disks or had problems in the past ejecting.

I can't figure out what disk was not ejected properly. All I have connected is an external HD. How can I find the disk that needs to be ejected?

If your profile is correct and you are still on Tiger (10.4.x) then insert the Tiger Install disc that came with the computer and run Disk Utility and repair Disk Permissions. Also it would be wise to do 2-3 Intel iMac SMC and PRAM resets in a row. They can be a little stubborn so doing several could be what it takes.

  • The disk was not ejected properly

I have 3 Seagate 1.5TB external USB drives. Two of which I am using with a MacbookPro 17" first gen. Latest snow leopard. The third one I am tethering to a Dell XPS server. The one attached to the Dell works fine.
On the MBP17 Every now and again (randomly) the disk disappears from finder and I get this dialog:
    |
    | The disk was not ejected properly. If
    | possible, always eject a disk before
    | unplugging it or turning it off.
    |
    | To eject a disk, select it in the finder and choose File
    | > Eject. The next time you connect the disk, Mac OS
    | X will attempt to repair any damage to the
    | information on the disk.
    |
    | ( OK )
I've replaced one of the drives through Seagate RMA and the same thing happens with the returned/refurbished drive. So, I really don't think there's anything wrong with the drives.
I've tried at least 3 different USB cables of different lengths from different vendors. One is only 1.5feet & gold plated. Still, random ejects. Using the disk attached to an old dual G5 I have... I don't have this problem.
Anyway, I am thus quite leery of using it for anything other than backups. I've never had the problem while actually copying files, only when I'm doing something else (like typing an email, or browsing the net).
I recall having read some older Macbook Pro 17" owners having similar issues with >= 1TB drives on these forums [http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2151621&start=120&tstart=0] but no solutions.
If someone can point me to a solution I would be very grateful.

@Gizmolab - Thanks for that reply. It seems like a decent theory. I found Seagate Diagnostics for Mac. It says it's only for drives that have a FireWire800 port. The ones I am using have USB only. I installed it anyway. When I run diagnostics it says no drives found so I cannot diagnose them. I'll see how it goes though, maybe it updated the driver.
To add some more info to this thread... I figured I'd try Disk Utility to manage the drives manually. I've tried dismounting them and also just dragging the volumes to the trash when they are not in use, and using Disk Utility to mount them again when they are needed.
What I've found is that in addition to the drives automagically ejecting themselves (and remounting again automatically about 20 to 30 seconds later)... is that a dismounted drive will automagically mount, too. Okay fine, I'll dismount them and unplug the USB cables, and reattach them when I need them.
Disk Utility reports that there appears to be no problems with the disk... thankfully. While typing this reply, I heard the disk go to sleep and about 3 minutes later it just ejected itself dang it. So Seagate Diagnostics appears to be only for Firewire800 drives.
