Installer package question (malware?)

i believe i may have installed a suspect install package on my ibook.
it definately installed something. it required the admin password, but did not install the expected program.
is there any way of finding out what files did get installed so i can rid myself of them, because at the moment i have no idea what this installer package did.
thanks.

I am going to suggest an alternative to Daniel Macks' suggestion about using 'lsbom'.
Double click on the receipt. The Installer will open. From the menu bar, select File > Show Files. This will give a list of all the files installed, similar to the list from lsbom. (If it was an application there will be hundreds of files inside the application.) You can copy and paste the list into a TextEdit file, if you want. Be careful about trashing folders that are not part of an application package. Then quit the installer. Do not click "Continue". (If you tried to go through with the installation, it would fail, because the receipt is not a complete package.)

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

  • HT5030 whem installing itunes i get this message "this installation package could not be opened. Verifiy that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"

whem installing itunes on my mums new computer which is windows 7 i get this message everytime "this installation package could not be opened. Verifiy that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid windows installer package"

    Let's check your Windows system.
    1.  Have you done all the important windows updates and service Packs on your system.  If not do it now.  START button, type in Windows Update and ENTER.  Select 'CHECK FOR UPDATES'
    2.  Let's check your Windows system files for possible file corruption
SCAN and repair possible Windows system file corruption:
Go to command prompt (START/ALL PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES right mouse click "command prompt" and choose "Run as Administrator"
    type in
    sfc /scannow
let Windows fix any system files that need to be repaired.
Restart the computer if it did actually repair any files.
    3.  Check your system for possible Malware.  But you have to do it in WIndows Safe Mode.
Start your computer in "Safe mode with networking", go to this link download a free version of Malwarebyte.
    http://www.malwarebytes.org/products/malwarebytes_free
Install and perform update immediately, then do a full SCAN. Remove malware if it indeed finds any. Restart computer to regular windows to let Malwarebyte complete the removal.
To start your computer in safe mode
Press and hold the F8 key as your computer starts. You need to press F8 before the Windows logo appears. If the Windows logo appears, you'll need to try again by waiting until the Windows logon prompt appears, and then shutting down and restarting your computer.
On the Advanced Boot Options screen, use the arrow keys to highlight the "safe mode with networking" option, and then press Enter. Log on to your computer with a user account that has administrator rights.
When your computer is in safe mode, you'll see the words Safe Mode in the corners of your screen. To exit safe mode, restart your computer and let Windows start normally.

I pulled my brains out trying to figure this bug out and I may have a solution for you.
All of it installed fine in my desktop, but a friend's laptop got the error you mentioned on quicktime, itunes, flash, officeXP and about anything else I tried to load for him.
If you look in: C:\documents and settings\<username>\Local Settings\Temp there will be an iTunes install log...open it in Notepad and see if it isn't exiting with a 1619 error while running msiexec.exe
If this is the case, this fix should work for you.
Seems some configurations of XP (and possibly Vista) aren't allowing full administrator rights to the account you set up when you installed XP (even though User Editor says you do have those rights.)
I read 2 MS articles and turned off simple file sharing, then gave ownership of the entire C: drive to the administrator. Logged the admin account off, logged his "admin" account in, and then gave rights to his personal directory to his account (c:\docs and settings\<username>)
Once I did that, every install that had previously errored out performed flawlessly.
    The MS articles in question:
    http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=316309 (1619 error)
    and
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308419 (how to set special permissions)
    Hope this helps!

Do you get the "The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the vendor to verify that this a valid windows installer package" error?
download and install "right click take ownership"
    http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-me nu-in-vista/
locate the adobe folder inside the programdata folder, mine was located at "C:\programdata\Adobe"
right click the adobe folder,  and take ownership of the folder.
Don't know if this will fix other peoples problems, but it fixed mine.

when I installed iTunes 10.6 to windows 7, during the process i got this message -" There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run" and after that the setup closed automatically. Plaese tell me if any setting up of windows is in order.

Try looking at the two previous discussions listed on the right side of this page with your same question.
Also, try searching/posting in the iTunes forum since you do not have an iPod problem.

  • I cannot install itunes to my windows 7 computer. I've deleted everthing apple related (in order recommended). I get a message each time that states "There is a problem with this windows installer package. etc.. What should I do?

I've also spent hours on the phone with both apple and windows technical support specialists. This is very clearly not a windows issue. I've given my computer a clean boot, disable my antivirus and firewall, and then attempted to download (yes, from apple's website). I've delete all of the programs (in the necessary order) and then attempted reinstalling with absolutely no luck. I'm starting to think that there's absolutely nothing I will be able to do. I've also never been able to fine "apple software updater or apple software update on my computer, which is particularly odd because I haven't found a post in this community that answers that question. No, "apple software update" cannot be found by accessing the start menu or anything in the "C drive". Apple software update is also never included in the itunes download package that I get from apple's website (the others, such as bonjour, apple application support, and apple mobile support are). No matter what I do, I always get the mesage at the end of the download, "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor."
This may or may not be related to the "apple software update" issue.

Apparently it's an itunes issue. I just tried to update and got the same issue. Called att to activate my iphone 4s and they say they can do the swap but apple is telling them itunes is down atm.  So will have to wait

  • ITunes and Windows Installer Package - HELP!!!!

I've seen my question, which is also MY problem, that Windows Installer Package will not allow ITunes to download. I've read several posts on possible "fixes" in several forums, and have yet to resolve my problem. Anyone know how I can fix this? I would REALLY appreciate the help.

it says there is a problem with this windows installer package, a DLL required could not be run
With that one, even though you're getting a different error message, try the procedure from the following user tip:

hi guys i got problem apple software Update
    i got masage
.The feature you trying use is on a network resource that is unavailable.
Click OK to try again,or enter an alternate path to a folder containing the installation package i Tunes.msi' in the box below
and i cant find anything please help

This forum is for questions about Apple Remote Desktop, Apple's software for managing networked Mac systems, and hence not the best place for your question. I'd suggest asking in the iTunes for Windows forum. You'll need to include more details, including the version of Windows you have, before anyone can do more than guess as to the problem.
    Regards.
