Installer packages are opening in terminal

I am currently installing OSX 10.7.3 on an external passport HD for my wife whose Macbook hard drive has died.
I now have all the system up to date but have encountered an odd problem.
All the .mpkg installers are opening in Terminal not the Installer utility, which I can't find.
My choices are in Open with: Terminal, App Store and Other….
Any suggestions?

...it is not letting me do a Change All.
What happens when you try?

  • Almost all installer packages are corrupt!

    Hi,
The following installer packages are corrupt:
    J2SE SDK
    J2EE SDK
    NetBeans 3.6, 4.0
    Documentation packages
    WSDP 1.5
    etc.
I tried downloading multiple times, with Firewall on and off, with GetRight and with SUN DOWNLOAD MANAGER but results are the same:
either .cab file is corrupt or ZIP archive is corrupt or something like that.
    I can't install anything!
My OS is WinXP Pro. I tried to install to Win2000 Pro, the same result.
The only thing that installs properly and works is Wireless Toolkit.
I would be very appreciate if someone could help.
    Regards,
    Sergei

Sounds like your Internet connection may be noisy. Try downloading using another connection, or have your connection checked.

  • ITunes installer package not opening up on Windows XP.

I have Windows XP Pro, and an iPhone 3G. I've tried downloading iTunes a countless number of times. But before the installer opens up, the following message comes up.
'This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, and make sure that this is a valid Windows installer package.'
I've tried installing alternatives, but either the iPhone driver needs to be installed from iTunes, which isn't working for me, or I just can't find the driver.
And yes, I've tried CopyTrans too.
    Any help?

Doublechecking something first. Are you getting any error messages or no error messages whatsoever?
If it's no error messages whatsover, and the iTunes.exe process appears and persists in Task Manager for long periods of time after you try to launch iTunes, what make and model of firewall software are you running on the PC? (By any chance, is it Norton Internet Security 2005, or the free AOL version of McAfee?)

  • The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exist

    HELP!
I have not been able to update my Itunes to a newer version (since 6.0.5). Every time I try to upgrade to the newer version I get this error message when I try to install:
"The installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package"
This is been incredibly frustrating because now I am limited in what songs and albums I can buy online because they require the newer version. I am getting to the point where i'm ready to start using another service to get my music from now on. I've noticed that others here have the same error message, but they are using Windows Vista. I'm having this problem on Windows XP.
Any help would be very appreciated.

If you are not already doing so, install from an Administrator account.
If you haven't already done so, download the iTunes Installer from:
    http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/
Then right click on the installer and select "Run as Administrator." (Even though you are using an admin account).
If that doesn't work, try creating a new administrator account and installing from there.

At what point in the process are you getting this message? Have you tried downloading a fresh copy of the iTunes setup file from http://www.apple.com/itunes/download/ ?
For general advice see Troubleshooting issues with iTunes for Windows updates.
The steps in the second box are a guide to removing everything related to iTunes and then rebuilding it which is often a good starting point unless the symptoms indicate a more specific approach. Review the other boxes and the list of support documents further down page in case one of them applies.
Your library should be unaffected by these steps but there is backup and recovery advice elsewhere in the user tip.

  • New itunes install error - Installation package could not be opened. Verify

I Just bought a brand new computer last night. I am trying to install Itunes and get the following error. "This installation package could not be opened. Verify that the package exists ad that you can access it, or contacnt the applicaiton vendor to verify that this is avalid windows installer package"
I am running windows 7 64 bit home premium. I have verified that i have downloaded the correct itunes version itunes64setup.exe
    So far i have tried
-downloading and installing all microsoft updates
-disabled all anti virus and firewall software,
    -rebooting and re-downloading
-tried installing quicktime first. (gives me the same error)
    -stopping and restarting windows installer
-deleted all items from the temp folder
-tried running itunes64setup.exe as admin and also in compatibility mode
-verified i have downloaded itunes64setup.exe with IE 64 bit
I am at a loss. I can not find any real solution for this problem. I am now 5 hours into trying to find an answer. This is a brand new computer and I have installed no other programs on it than what came out of the box.
Any help would be greatly appriciated!!

Well if anyone else runs into this problem, this is how i got it fixed.
I did a complete system restore to the origional factory default on the computer. I would not have thought that this would have been needed as it was brand new out of the box with nothing downloaded/changed on it.
However it worked. The only thing I can thing of, is that on the origional factory install of the software there may have been a corrupt or missing file that when I did a new install corected itself.
If you have the origional windows disk that came with the computer I would use that to completely reinstall windows. If you are like me and they didnt provide you a disk, I made a complete backup of the system to disk and made a recovery disk just to be safe before restoring the system.
Hopefully this is helpfull to someone.

  • This installation package could not be opened. error

Ok, so i just bought a new hard disk with better memory, speed etc, and i installed windows vista 64 bit version on it. i had a 32 bit version on another hard disk but the hard disk is so bad i cant acces it anymore. So i download java and then when its installing it says this: "This installation package could not be opened. Verify the package exists and that you can access it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows installer package."
I have tryed ALOT of sulotions, downloading offline version, disaling firewall, auto protect norton, UAC, downloading other wersions of java but nothing works!!!! im getting tired of these error messages and i need a proper solution now!

So i download java and then when its installing it saysThis is kind of an obvious suggestion, but are you sure you downloaded the correct 64bit version for Windows? Check if you need the x86_64 version or the IA 64 bit version.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Select
    /var/log ▹ install.log
from the hierarchical list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar. Then select the messages from the last installation or update attempt, starting from the time when you initiated it. If you're not sure when that was, click the Clear Display button in the toolbar of the Console window and then try the installation again.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

  • Returned messages of "Installer" command are Chinese strings in terminal?

    Hi,
I met a problem when installing software via command line. After performing installation in terminal, some programs return Chinese messages where I know it should be English. I have checked my system language and region format settings if they are currently in English, and seems everything is fine there. And I can not remember if I have touched something in system files or in preferences. I am attaching the exported text from terminal as below, now i just want the strings displayed after "Installer:" back to Engish, please help me on this.

    Thanks for your quick response.
Yes, the -lang option sets the defult language will be used by system after installation, problem could not be solved by this option.
And I think this issue is also not related to the applications' installer packages, because I have tried with several different .pkg files from different softwares and the Chinese strings are always being displayed...so I can say this does happen with all installations on my machine.
Anyway, this does not impact anything about my works, just looks a little weird. Hope somebody can help to figure it out.

Have you tried a shift key start.
Hold down the shift key and start iTunes. Keep holding the shift key until you are asked to choose a library. Navigate to you iTunes folder and choose iTunes Library.itl.

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
