Installer Packages - Can they be deleted?

Hello,
I am looking to free up some HD space and found many packages in the following path: HD/Library/Receipts.
It looks like these are apps that either came with the iMac or that I subsequently installed. Can these be deleted with causing harm?
Some examples of files: FrontRowUpdate1.3.pkg, German.pkg, Aperture1.5.2Update.pkg.

No, you do not want to mess with the receipts. Among other things, those receipts are important to Disk Utility for Repairing Permissions on your startup volume when things aren't going to well. They have the icon of installer packages, but they are not the package. Each individual receipt is only a few hundred KBs.
Actually, other than extra fonts and unneeded printer drivers, there isn't too much I would mess around with in the Library. Especially if you are unfamiliar with what you are doing. You can really screw the pooch if you do.

Did you use the Migration Assistant to help set up the new iMac using some of the files in the older PC? Some likely won't mean much, unless you have applications that can use or convert them. There's also a way to use the software Time Machine to import data files from an external or another computer, so you may have used that, too.
Hopefully someone with experience in a similar issue will reply...

I type Sandi Patty. It changes it to Sandi patty. (Little "p") There are some pics in there correctly capitalized and some that aren't. So, I deleted all the faces with incorrect spelling hoping to clear the system of that name completely. Didn't work. As you type Sandi, all the choices, including the one with error in capitalization show up. I type it CORRECTY -- Sandi Patty -- I click on another face and the Sandi Patty becomes Sandy patty. (Little P) There are other names in the list that were the result of bad spelling. Can these NOT be deleted??

Not at this time, I spent an hour on the phone with Apple support today on this topic and they could not locate the files necessary to delete names from the list. Bummer

HT1925 unable to locate installation package itunes.msi to delete itunes, any suggestions on how else to delete itunes???

I am unable to delete itunes from my computer due to unable to locate installation package itunes.msi. I do not have this file on my computer, can anybody tell me how to delete itunes from my computer??

Unfortunately, this sort of trouble has gotten more complicated to deal with ever since Microsoft pulled the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from their Download Center on June 25. First we have to find a copy of the utility.
Let's try Googling. (Best not to use Bing, I think.) Look for a working download site for at least version 3.0 of the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (The results from mydigitallife and Major Geeks are worth checking.)
After downloading the utility installer file (msicuu2.exe), scan the file for malware, just in case. (I use the free version of Malwarebytes AntiMalware to do single-file scans for that.)
If the file is clean, to install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you've downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove".
Quit out of CleanUp. Restart the PC, and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?

I am trying to uninstall itunes to reinstall a newer version. it cannot find the installation package. i have deleted everyhting but itunes

i would love to use itunes. i updated to 11.1 this evening but when i plugged in my iphone it told me that i needed to uninstall itunes and reinstall. I tried to uninstall but i never could. i kept gettign the message taht it could not find teh installation package!!!!!

Uninstalling iTunes can be tricky, but following Knowledge Base articles should provide assistance in uninstalling the iTunes Application depending on your Windows version:

What are these DR$TEMP % tables and can they be deleted?

We are generating PL/SQL using ODMr and then periodically running the model in batch mode. Out of 26,542 objects in the DMUSER1 schema, 25,574 are DR$TEMP% tables. Should the process be cleaning itself up or is this supposed to be a manual process? Is the cleanup documented somewhere?

The only DR$ tables/indexes built are the ones generated by the Build,Apply and Test Activities. I confirmed that they are deleted in ODMr 10.2.0.3. As I noted earlier, there was a bug in ODMr 10.2.0.2 which would lead to leakage when deleting Activities. You will have DR$ table around for existing Activities, so do not delete these without validating they are no longer part of an existing Activity.
You can track down the DR$ objects associated to an Activity by viewing the text step in the activity and finding the table generated for the text data. This table will have a text index created on it. The name of that text index is used as a base name for several tables which Oracle text utilizes.
Again, all of these are deleted when you delete an Activity with ODMr 10.2.0.3.

Some bookmarks "gray out" and will neither work nor can they be deleted. FF 4.0, Win XP SP3. Have tried safe mode, restart, reboot, and manual deletion in the bookmarks organizer. None of these work.

Only certain sites, such as CNN, will show the site name but not the URL in the Bookmarks Organizer. Sometimes they will appear on a restart. I noticed this in FF 3.16 and thought that FF4.0 might cure it but it hasn't. I've tried disabling hardware acceleration, all plugins, and the advice on the Firefox help site under "bookmarks don't work." I'm typing this from a different computer with essentially the same settings, OS, etc. and this does not show a problem on this machine. I've been through Task Manager, Processes and FF does not appear after shutdown.

Installation problems can have so many causes...but my first question is did you cancel installation of Windows drivers after it found the soundcard as new hardware? Second, and by way of example, recently the IT guy at work setup a new WinXP PC for me including an A2ZS card. But he installed the default Windows drivers for the soundcard. In Device Manager, I uninstalled these drivers and rebooted. Windows found new hardware. I cancelled the offer of Windows drivers and proceeded to install drivers, Creative software apps, and Mediasource from the original installation CD. Everything works fine now. Possibly you've done something similar to this procedure already, but If you decide to try it again, uninstall any software apps first.

Files in the /users/unison/db/tmp directory - can they be deleted?

In the /users/unison/db/tmp directory, there are hundreds of files in there
called vista.log and unitmp.ndx, that have been accumulating there for many days
and is filling up the file system. Can they be removed?

These files are there because the database writes in this temporary space while
the server is up and running. They should be getting deleted automatically when
the server is shutdown, but if they do not then try the following procedure:

1.Stop the server. 
2.Move the files that are in the tmp directory to a new temp directory.
(e.g. tmp2) 
3.Resart the server. 
4.Monitor the activity. 
5.If all works well - remove the temp2 directory.

I just got a new Imac, and downloaded files from my old PC. Now, when I go to Finder, I have 1500 files in an area called developer. What is this, and can they be deleted? There are also 78 files listed as Other! Most of these files I do not recognize.

If I use home sharing, may I delete songs off my itunes or will that delete them off of all shared devices? For example, if songs are in my library from another family member that I do not want, can they be deleted without deleting them from theirs?

I have recently started home sharing with my family. I was wondering if I could delete music on my laptop's itunes or if because they are linked it would carry my actions over onto the other devices within home sharing. I don't want my itunes to be filled with my family members purchases, but would like to make sure that if I delete music on mine that it will not delete it for them as well.

That depends what you mean. Deleting content from your library won't delete anything from anyone else's. The content you delete from your library will not be available for homesharing with others though.

Two files taking up 99% of my SD card - can they be deleted?

Hello all:
There are two files on my SD card which are taking up virtually 99% (not literally) of the space. The files are as follows:
- thumbs129x129.dat (982,674 KB)
- thumbs800x800.dat (777,784 KB)
That accounts for a total of 1.67 GB of the available 1.81 GB on my SD card. Both files are located in the "X:\BlackBerry\system\media" folder.
An earlier post about thumbnails not loading suggested that these files can be deleted as I think that the file has been amassing thumbnails for images that are long deleted (I have no files in the camera folder at all now). Is it safe to delete these clogging files? I have since deleted every video, ringtone, music file etc to make space and I am now down to space for only about 50 photos on the card.
What do you think? Good to delete?

Are "Previous Systems" files important or can they be deleted?

There is a file in my the hard Drive of the MacBook entitled "Previous Systems.localized" which is taking up 9.72GB of space. Is this important or can I delete it to create space on the start up disk?

Did you recently do an 'Archive and Install'? If so, that file may be leftover from your previous system. If things are working smoothly after a week or so I'd go ahead and delete the entire prev. system.

When i browse through the contents of the ipod,there are various,items listed,that are only ten to thirty seconds long,with names like...lama up,,,lama down,,,horse,,chilaud 2 and loads of Ems 101/02/03/etc.....I was wondering if they are already on the new ipod,or downloaded from some hidden site on my own computer files,,,,They also used to be listed on my old nano ipod,before it was replaced...Cheers
