Installing 10.2.0.4 from scratch. But 10.2.0.1 wont run on OS kernel
I want to install 10.2.0.4 on a new machine (customer requirements) and needs to install 10.2.0.1 first. Unfortunately 10.2.0.1 won't run on the current kernel that we're on which is 2.632-300.32.2.el5uek.
Is there a workaround to this ? or do I
1. ask my admin to downgrade the kernel
2. Install 10.2.0.1
3. upgrade the kernel back to 2.632-300.32.2.el5uek
4. Install 10.2.0.4 on top.
Sounds laborious ! :(
I'm going thru the OUI clone documentation now.
Will cloning be fine even if it's a different flavor or Linux ?

I am unable to download updates directly to iPad 2 , now trying to reinstall one from scratch but download keeps stopping and the restarting. Can you offer any advice, this happening when trying to download to laptop in itunes as well. Have tried to download on different broadband lines without success. Is this an apple problem due to high demand or something else?
Everything has worked well until about a month ago, up to date iOS 5 and itunes installed. Tried resetting numerous times, turned off all apps still no joy. Ipad was great but now feeling buying one was mistake. Also recent music purchase was useless and tunes would not play correctly.Since this is happening on the iPad and the computer, it might be worth a try to reboot your router - unplug it from power for about 30 seconds and then plug it in again.
Quit iTunes on the PC, reboot it and the iPad as well
Reboot the iPad by holding down on the sleep and home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons -
Ok....I have a 2012 MBP that has Yosemiti installed. The airplay works from iTunes, but when I try to mirror from the desktop I get the "no device detected" message. Airplay on all of my other devices work fine. Has anyone else had this issue?

No choice, need to reinstall OS from scratch, but... Help!
I've been dealing with a disk error that has tripped up every application I've used to correct it. Disk First Aid could nothing. I tried Disk Warrior, but that's taking centuries to run and still won't solve the end problem (according to a DW techie). But before running DW I tried to use Retrospect, but that application won't function either, presumably because of the original disk error. All of this because I can't upgrade to Tiger and because I've been told that though there are no issues now the disk error will eventuallly get me. I don't know what the disk error is but it clearly is causing problems up and down the chain.
Anyway, so I am forced to reinstall Tiger from scratch thus entirely erasing and reformatting my hard drive (which I've been told will solve the problem). But without a Retrospect back up all I can do is drag'n'drop from an external hard drive back onto the Powerbook. But though I've backed up most everything manually I'm sure I'm missing things, plus there's all those settings and preferences (and where is my Safari bookmarks file?).
So, should I do this and go through the pain? Should I take it into a professional and have them do a more thorough backup and reinstall and reset? Should I buy a new Powerbook and just have it copy over everything onto a freshly formatted Tiger machine and sell my old one with a fresh install and reformat on Ebay (no)? Or just stay with Panther until I buy a new one later and live with the risk of an eventual hard drive meltdown?
What to do, what to do??? Thanks.
Also, with Restrospect, what happens with a restore if I've reinstalled a new OS since the backup? Does it do anything with the OS or not?Your Safari Bookmarks.html file is in the folder ~/Library/Safari.
Good luck.

Need to start from scratch, but how?
lost my old iphone 3gs, got my new iphone 4g today. i followed advice and tried to restore from the last backup of the iphone 3gs but it didn't work, i get a crash during the firmware update and then it goe into restore mode, and tries again, and crashes again...
how do i tell it to wipe and start from scratch, because when i plug it in it says its detected an iphone in restore mode so it tries to restore it - presumably using the 3gs settings which dont work..
help?!no everyone, i just found the answer.. so if you are looking for the same thing it is nothing to do with rusty usb cables etc.
thanks to gavinthain, who posted the following to me earlier, i've followed it and it worked;
Download RecBoot 1.0.2
I found it here: http://www.sebby.net/659-released-recboot-1-0-2/
Plug in your iPhone.
Close iTunes.
Run "RecBoot Exit Only"
Click the "Exit Recovery Mode" button.
The screen on the iPhone will go black. At this point, UNPLUG the iPhone (before it starts back up)
It will boot up correctly after finishing the firmware install.
Now plug your iPhone back in and complete a normal restore. -
How do I re-install my Mac OSX Server from scratch
Hi,
I have purchased two MacMini Servers with 10.6 OSX Server software pre-installed.
I have changed the organization as our company name changed and run into license issues.
I want to re-install the Mac OSX Server software and start from scratch. How do I go about this. I tried yesterday for many hours to do so and the new installs are still running into duplicate license issues and other issues. What is the best approach to do re-install? I am willing to erase the internal Hard Disk and boot (with an external DVD optical drive) if that is the best way to go. What are the steps?
I have the original CDs or DVDs and have extra, external hard disks to do a Time Machine backup, etc.
Thanks,
DonIf you are looking to do a nuke and pave of the system, and you have an external optical drive, then yes, that is likely the most direct method. Connect the optical drive, insert the installation DVD, and reboot the system targeting the optical disk as the boot volume (you can do this by holding down the C key or the Option key during startup).
Now, if you do not have an optical drive, you can put the installation disk into another Mac running 10.6 and use the Remote Install Mac OS X application in your Utilities folder.
Hope this helps -
Just installed the new LR upgrade from cloud but won't open only flashes, any ideas?

I have a MacBook Pro and I have A LOT of files in there which I don't need anymore. And it's too much to sit and do it one by one so I want to completely reset it to factory settings. I tried booting it from the OS X CD by holding C during startup but it won't work. It just gets stuck on the white or gray screen with the apple logo. Nothing else. I'm assuming that it's because the software version on the Mac is 10.6.8 but the boot disk I'm using is 10.6.3? But I'm not sure.
I also tried booting the CD with holding the option key and choosing the disk, same problem.
Opening Disk Utility while regularly logged in, won't let me delete.
Also tried changing the setting of what to boot in on startup, still gets frozen on the apple logo.
Please what can I do to fix this and delete everything?
Thank you in advance!Clean Install of Snow Leopard
1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc. Insert the disc into the
optical drive and restart the computer. After the chime press and hold down the
"C" key. Release the key when you see a small spinning gear appear below the
dark gray Apple logo.
2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, set the format type to Mac
OS Extended (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Partition button.
3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. Be sure you configure your initial admin account with the exact same
username and password that you used on your old drive. After you finish Setup
Assistant will complete the installation after which you will be running a fresh
install of OS X. You can now begin the update process by opening Software
Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your installation current. -
Installing Windows XP Pro SP3 from scratch - not upgrading
Hi there,
My knowledge of computers is pretty limited and I'm wondering if someone can help me out. I need to install Windows on my Mac for school (needed for AutoCAD) and the only XP disk I have in Professional Edition: Service Pack 3. I have read a lot about troubles people have had with trying to install service pack 3, but I think everything I've read has had to deal with an upgrade from SP2. I will not be upgrading. I don't have BootCamp/Windows installed on my computer currently. I am starting fresh with a SP3 disk.
I have Bootcamp assistant 2.0 on my computer currently. What do I need to do to ensure Windows installs with little to no headache?
I hope someone can help me out!!
ThanksHi and welcome to Discussions,
first you should make/have a backup of your Mac OSX, just in case.
Second, following the BootCamp Installation Guide (found here http://www.apple.com/support/bootcamp/ ) should result in a no-hassle Windows installation on your Mac.
Windows XP with SP2 or SP3 is explicitely mentioned as being compatible with BootCamp.

AMDS not installing when installing iTunes 10.5 64bit from scratch
Sorry for creating yet another thread on the 10.5 update, but I'm running out of options (and patience ) here.
I was happily running iTunes 10.4 64bit on Windows 7 ultimate when I saw that I had to update to 10.5 in order to install iOS5 on my iPhone 4.
I tried automatic and manual update, didn't work. So I went through the hoops, uninstalled everything Apple related in the correct order, and finally managed to install iTunes 10.5 64bit. Installation went seemingly smoothly, except that at some point the installer window said "rolling back", then went on with its business.
I started iTunes, and connected my iPhone. A message appeared saying something among the lines of "this device cannot be used because the required software is not installed" (I'm translating here, sorry). I then realized that Apple Mobile Device Support hadn't been installed. I tried installing it manually (extracting the installer from the itunes64setup), no dice. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling iTunes a dozen times, using iobit uninstaller or not, still no dice.
Is there something I didn't think of? Any bit of help would be much appreciated. Thanks for your time.I've done it a couple times, Windows 7 Pro and even Windows 7 Preview, and it does install just fine.
Of course it could be your security suite - mine is MS Security Essentials on two PCs but also Kaspersky PURE on 3rd
AMS is or can get screwed or damaged which was why I went with a clean install in one case.
Once it showed yellow alert in Device Manger for iPod USB deivce, and in Devices & Printers (control panel). Might be when I told Windows "always do xyz when it detects iPod" (which I now don't select any default action for.
To be sure the iPod will be detected, some people do it slightly different but basically:
before launch iTunes or connecting iPod -
Services: Restart AMS, Bonjour and iPod
Launch iTunes
Connect iPod
But once Device Manger complains, I could never get it 'fixed.'
Try a clean install on another partition of Windows for test.
Then if that works you can decide what to do. Backup, move, resize.
It took me 20 minutes to install Windows but a day to add, update and install everything else, and make some backup images ($20 Paragon Clone OS utility, which ARE bootable and take 10 minutes to copy 50GB ) -
When synching my photo library (selected folders) to my IPad, it reaches the last (6th) step and then I see the folders appear on my IPad for a brief moment, but then the synch stops and the photos failed to upload. What's the deal? After 6 attempts, I give up. THis should not be that difficult and I've spent way too much time trying to figure this out. Makes me want to throw out my 1st generation IPad and go with another tablet manufacturer. Anyone who has experiened this or knows how to remedy would appreciate hearing from you.
TxNever have this problem. That's just weird. Maybe there's something wrong with one of the photos?
Try viewing those photos with quicktime first? -
I have backed up all my photos which was important to me. I dont mind loosing everything except my contacts.
I did a restore yesterday but that didn't help.Contacts are designed to be synced with a supported address book app on your computer where your contacts should be available with or without an iPhone or any cell phone which can be lost or stolen or damaged beyond repair.
In addition, there are a number of free email accounts that support syncing contacts over the air not involving your computer or involving it in addition to such as with an Apple iCloud account, Yahoo, Gmail, and Hotmail. -

If not, you can redownload purchases by clicking "Purchased" under Quick Links at the top right of the iTunes store.
