Installing 10.3 Panther

Has anyone installed 10.3 Panther on the latest iMac?
Or have you successfully dual booted with 10.3 and 10.5?
I know that 10.3 is not supported on the latest iMac but my software is only supported on 10.3

From what I've read, it's not possible. If your iMac shipped with Leopard, it's not backwards compatible with previous operating systems.

  • How do you install OS X Panther on an iBook G4

The iBook g4 is either late 2004 or early 05. It has OS X Leopard but I want Panther ( or mabye Tiger ). I just bought it so I dont know a lot about the history.

    Hello
    Welcome to the Support Communities.
In order for you to install 10.3 Panther or 10.4 Tiger you will need the retail version of either Operating Systems.
Now this is a mid 2005 iBook, the chances are the system disk supplied would have been 10.4 (Tiger) else in if it's a 2004 to early 2005 then it would have been 10.3 Panther.
You may find it hard to get hold of a copy of the system disk for this iBook, you can't buy them through Apple anymore. There are some vender online who may still stock both retail and system restore disks.

  • Wont let me install tiger on panther on the hard drive

    Hello,
I recently obtained a 14" 800mhz ibook g3 with 256 mb of ram from a friend. The reason that they gave it to me in the first place becuase the hard drive crashed and they never bothered fix it. When I got I turned it on, the drive spun up then the computer shut down. I inserted a tiger install cd from my imac g5 and booted from the disk. When the installer ran it told me that tiger could not be installed on this disk. I went to disk utility and tried to repair the disk and it failed every time, erased it, partitioned it, tried everything. I finally convinced my self that the hd was shot. So I went out and bought a 60gb notebook hard drive and installed it myself. Once installed I booted from the tiger cd and ran the installer. It told me that the software was not able to be installed on this computer. I dont know why is said that it the computer seems to meet the specs of tiger. Well I also tried to install panther, when I ran the installer and got to the drive selection screen there was my new hard drive but there was a red stop sign with an exclimation mark on the bottom right and corner of the drive icon. Becuase of this it would not let me continue. I ran disk utility and repaired and everything. I am stumped. Please help me. I am also not sure what version of osx is on there because the owner does not know.
    Again the machine is a...

Edit... Today I when ibook beeped three times when I started it up. After reading some of the apple docs, I learning how thought that it had something do to with the ram. I took it out and then placed it back in. Ran the installer and panther is currently installing!

    Hi, Peter.
Are you sure you have the hard drive set as master? There are jumper settings for the hard drive that may not be set correctly.

  • Install failure: Tiger & Panther & Jaguar

I have 400 MHz Power Book with 384 MB of memory & a 10GB drive. (CPU Type: PowerPC 750(42.2)) It was running under OSX 10.3.9 successfully when it started to slow up terribly. So I decided to clean it out and try to upgrade to Tiger. Backed-up the hard drive and did an erase-&-install of Tiger. I'd get an "Installation was unsuccessful. Please re-install message." And again. And again. So I tried to erase-&-install Panther. Same message. Tried one or twice again, this time not erasing, but accepting the default "Upgrade" option. Finally it worked, it seemed. Tried to update to 10.3.9. Disk image failed to open, so I opened it on my desktop machine and network-transferred the update install file to the laptop to install. That seemed to work, but some apps refused to open; iTunes, Mail, . . . Tried to install Jaguar; same failure message. Kept trying till it seemed to succeed. Update to 10.2.8 failed. . . . Tried various other things, including DiskWarrior, TechTool, AppleJack, PowerBook hardware test disk. No problems found.
I've currently got it running under 10.3. (There are a bunch of files and folders with (Mac OS 9) as part of their names. These, plus an AppleJack dmg and a ComboUpdate 10.3.9 --all under the root directory-- seem to be left over from an earlier install, even through at least one erase-&-install.)
Oh, yes. The battery has been dead for a long time. If that matters.
    Any good ideas, anyone?

If you do an Erase and Install then there cannot be anything "leftover" from a previous installation.
Is this a Pismo or later model or a Lombard? Lombard's cannot run Tiger. Tiger requires a computer with built-in Firewire and USB ports.
I suggest you may want to do an extended hard drive format:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disk. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. Then select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger.)
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Set the number of partitions from the dropdown menu (use 1 partition unless you wish to make more.) Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the volume(s) mount on the Desktop.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled, if supported.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process will take 30 minutes to an hour or more depending upon the drive size.
After formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed with the OS X installation.
A dead battery should not be a problem as long as you have the AC adapter connected for power. However, none of the settings normally preserved in PRAM will be saved whenever AC power is removed or the computer is shut down. This could lead to odd behavior because the date and time, display information, selected boot volume, etc. are stored in PRAM.

  • Re-Installing DVD Player (Panther)

Hello: I need to re-install DVD Player into my Panther OS laptop. I can not find it in my Panther OS discs. I can not find it at Apple Downloads ... only for Tiger OS and Jaguar OS. Thank-you, MLR

I can not find it in my Panther OS discs.
It's on there, but you can't install it by itself using the Installer. However, there is a utility called Pacifist that allows installation of individual "packages" that are on the Mac OS X Installation Disk.

  • Can't Install OS X Panther

I have an old ibook G3 (Dual USB) that I picked up used from a computer thrift store. They sold me it with Ubuntu 8.04 on it. I want to get Panther installed on it but when I insert the disk and press c it does nothing. I even had an old copy of OS 9 that I tried and I got the same results. What do I need to do to get Panther on my ibook? The only other thing I can think of is erasing the hard drive, but I do not know if that would work. My specs are a 500 megahertz G3 with 512 megabytes of RAM and a 20 gigabyte hard drive. Thanks for any help.

    borgunion, welcome to Apple Discussions.
Are the Panther install CDs a retail version (black with silver X), or a machine specific version (gray), which won't work. Same for the OS 9 installer if it is gray. A retail version of OS 9 is white with an orange 9.
Also, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version in System Profiler) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
Your iBook meets the Panther requirements.

  • Stuck on blue screen after re-installing OS X Panther

Ok, iTunes installation was getting stuck at 53%. So ran the Check Disk Utility from the OS X Panther CD. I got the message...
So then I decided to do a clean install of OS X Panther. I thought all was going well until now. My ibook is stuck on this blue screen with a rotating colorwheel mouse cursor. It eventually turns into an arrow but then goes back to a colorwheel...
So now what? Is buying another program like DiskWarrior my only option? Keep in mind that the hard drive was replaced the last week I had Apple Care Protection. And the 90 warranty on the replacement hard drive is over.
Here are the details of my iBook...

    Thank you
    M8602LL/A   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   640MB RAM

Well, I did the pram thing. That just brought me to a gray screen with the gray apple. And that's it. What I did notice about the info on the blue screen was that it was checking for fonts. So this time, I re-installed with all of the font options checked. Waste of space, but whatever.
Installation completed. I even got to the repetitive registration form. (hmmm, let's see, my ibook has been registered about 20 times.)
After I get to the desktop, well, that's it. I click on software update and it bounces and then stops. I get into the System Prefs and click Software Updates and apparently my copy of Panther is up to date. Ya right.
So then I click Safari in the Launcher. nothing
So then I go into my hard drive/application to get to Safari. and um, nothing. Well, actually I get an endless spinning scroll wheel.
So I try the PRAM thing again. And now I am stuck at a grey screen with a grey apple!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am ready to break this thing in half like I did to a cell phone once.

  • Any way to install Tiger or Panther?Beige G3 Mini Tower with G4 ZIF upgrade

Networked to my DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004) running Tiger 10.4.11, I have my 11-year-old Beige G3 Mini Tower with a G4 ZIF upgrade running Mac OS 9.2.2.
Sonnet, the upgrade manufacturer, says (or said, at some point) that the ZIF G4 CPU can run Panther or Tiger, but the problem is that the Mini Tower has no DVD drive to run the install disks; it has a CD drive only.
    Any workarounds?
Obviously this is more out of curiosity than need, as I can run all my OS X software on the MDD G4 under Tiger.
    Thanks in advance.

I don't know what issues you might have with the G3 SCSI drive and OS X, I was under the impression that the G3's floppy drive, serial ports (printer/modem), and SCSI chain would not work since there were no drivers for those G3 hardware items built into OS X.
I found that my external serial port modem continued to work for dial-up and fax, but I don't recall any reports of the floppy drive or SCSI working in OS X. My external SCSI drive never worked, but I'm not sure if the internal SCSI might work. I guess you could try it. My experience with SCSI in the G3 was limited and several years ago, other folks here may have better personal knowledge to share on that.

  • Cannot install tiger over panther, help

I have an emac 800mhz and i tried to install tiger on it but it said something like "kernel panic, we are hanging here." Please help. Regards -Ben

Hi Ben, is it Black or Gray?
What is the 2z691-****-A number on it?
    Tiger Requirements...
To use Mac OS X 10.4 Tiger, your Macintosh needs:
        * A PowerPC G3, G4, or G5 processor
        * Built-in FireWire
        * At least 256 MB of RAM (I recommend 1GB minimum)
        * DVD drive (DVD-ROM), Combo (CD-RW/DVD-ROM) or SuperDrive (DVD-R) for installation
        * At least 3 GB of free disk space; 4 GB if you install the XCode 2 Developer Tools  (I recommend 20GB minimum)

  • Error booting up from 10.4 install disc from panther 10.3

i was getting some strange error helping someone who has 10.3 to install 10.4. i try to boot up using the 10.4 install disc - power up the powerbook while holding down th C key. instead of getting the screen where i select the language, i get all sort of sys dump message on the screen. i then try to double clicking the 'install bundle icon' from the DVD from finder, it restarts the computer with the install disc still in the drive, it also gave me the same error.
how do i get around this problem? is the 10.3 trashed? do i need to re-install 10.3 with the install disc to clean it up and then install 10.4?
please help. my friend just bought turbo tax but it requires 10.4, so he needs to upgrade to 10.4 from 10.3

    Hi J Robson!
Tiger is available for purchase at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If the Mac meets the Leopard System Requirements. Leopard 10.5.x, can also be purchased at The Apple Store (U.S.).
If you know what to look for, a Full Retail Version, of the Tiger Install DVD, can be purchased, sometimes less expensively, at some online Apple retailers, Amazon, eBay, FastMac, HardCore Mac, AllMac, etc.
This is the correct one Mac OS X 10.4.6 Tiger, (DVD) Retail at FastMac.
    And at HardCore Mac.
Both are more expensive, than The Apple Store (U.S.).
As you have discovered, be sure not to purchase grey, upgrade or machine specific CDs or DVDs.
Tiger and Leopard are on DVD.
The discs should look exactly like the images in the above links, and not say Upgrade, CPU Drop-in DVD, or "This software is part of a hardware bundle purchase - not to be sold seperately." on them.

If the Mac meets the Tiger System Requirements, once Tiger 10.4.x is installed, you can use the PPC 10.4.11 Combo Update, to upgrade to the current version.
If Leopard 10.5.x is installed, use the Mac OS X 10.5.1 Update.

  • Installed tiger (formerly panther) now show only grey screen with apple. What should I do?

My Mac mini was 10.3.9 and I recently found that I no longer can view videos. I have a full version Tiger 10.4 so I installed it on the mini. Now it start with the right sound, the grey screen with apple comes up and that is it!! What do I do now?

You can try several trouble shooting steps are described in apple's trouble shooting article
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2570
    1) disconnecting all peripherals, including the ethernet cable
    2)  power on system
    1) power off system
    2) restart holding down the shift key until the apple logo appears
    1) resetting pram
    2) hold down command, option, letters p and r and press the power button.  Wait until you hear two chimes
There are more ideas in the trouble shooting article above

  • Computer crashed. I used Install Disk 1 Panther to reboot.

When it got to the install screen "Select Destination" it could not locate a volume. Has my mother board crashed.

Before you do much of anything, from the 10.3 Installer menu, choose "Disk Utility". \[Utilities Menu in 10.4.] An Installer-compatible version of Disk Utility will load from the CD.
If your drive does not show up at all in Disk Utility, then your drive has likely died. If it shows up, note any error messages. Select the drive and choose Repair. Note any error messages. DO NOT Choose Initialize, or all your data will definitely be lost. If your drive shows up, and reports a reasonable Make&Model and capacity, it may still be repairable with additional Utilities.

  • Install Panther  on a G4 w/ Tiger to be installed on top of that ?eMac DVDs

FIRST, let me say that I know that I this a long post, thanks for bearing with me. If you would prefer NOT to deal with all of these issues then, please feel free to your option by dealing with only 1, 2 or 3, etc. of the issues.
    Hi,
I have several questions that I would like to get some clarification on.
    A) To start with has anyone dealt with Fastmanc.com and had any kind of problems in regards to ordering older versions of Mac OSs and/or being sent machine specific Install packages that didn't match what you used, e,g, sent eMac install for use on a G4?
I've ordered a full installation package for Panther and with it comes with an updating CD for the updates through 10.3.9.
1)However, they told me that they were the install DVDs for an eMac. They guaranteed(not in writing) me that I would not have problems doing the install even though I have a G4 DP. I ordered these OS install DVDs after questioning them quite closely about this issue. At present I'm running a G4 DP 500(GigabitEthernet) with 512 MB of RAM, 2. ATI Radeon videocards and I have a completely updated version of 10.2.8(security patches et al). Will the fact that I'm using the install package for an eMac bring any problems my way during the installation and afterwards? If so, what kind and how serious a set of problems are likely to occur? I don't understand why having a more powerful and flexible setup wouldn't be able to handle the install from an eMac?
    2) The install DVDs for 10.4 are the update version again for the eMac and a CD with all of the Apple OS updates. The CD contains all of the updates through OS 10.4.11. Should I be aware of any issues during the installation process for Tiger?
    3) My HD(actually, I have 3) the original 40 GB is a Hitachi/IBM Deskstar, which is slaved to a new Seagate 120 GB, and an external Maxtor 1 Touch 300 GB HD, the Maxtor is used for auto backup(Retrospect 6.0.195).
a)I have partitioned the Seagate into 4 segments, 1) Seagate 10.2., 2) Seagate 10.3, 3) Seagate 10.4 and 4) Seagate 9.0 (for all of Apple OS 9 legacy software, 3rd party apps, and all of the work that I produced while using OS 9, etc.) The Hitachi/IBM has three partitions and all are almost completely full.
    4) Installation locations
4a) Now what I'm wondering is, when I install all of Panther, will I be able to install it in the partition designated S.G. 10.3.? IF not, into what partition is it likely to end up?
4b) Being that 10.4(Tiger) is an upgrade version installation will it automatically attach/install itself into the same partition where Panther installed? Or, can I designate it to install into the partition that I labeled as S.G. 10.4? This is where I would prefer to have it install.
4c) If 10.4 does install into the S.G. 10.4 partition will it function seamlessly being that it is separated from 10.3 which it is supposed to install itself over the top of? (I believe that the correct Tech description for this process.)
    5) If there is anything that I haven't thought of, haven't made clear or if you have any caveats or other suggestions, then please feel free to include them.
Thanks for whatever assistance that you may provide.

    Hi,
first thing is to check that you have the updated firmware for you GE installed.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117
If you have any OS installed run Apple System profiler and check the versiom, it should be 4.2.8
You need an OS 9 installation to be able to run the firmware update in case the firmware is old.
