Installing 10.5 on brand new drive

Hi,
I've been playing with a box of imac intel (core 2 duo) parts and got it all together and running. Please don't mention how any warranty has been voided. I know. This is sort of a project.
I installed a brand new hard drive (1 terrabyte) and got the 10.5 disk to install on the drive fine after I monkeyed around with formatting the drive first. I think I made 1 partition in order for it to show up as a drive in Disk Utility. Anyway, I installed 10.5.
Then I restarted it and got the lovely desktop with all the apps and such. I tried to do a software upgrade so that I could have the latest OS (10.5.8) and got an error message saying basically that it could not install the upgrade and that I should check with the software's manufacturer.
I then went into Disk Utility again and repaired permissions. I used Disk Warrior to rebuild the drive. All successful.
Then I went to try to upgrade the software to 10.5.8 and got the same error message.
And then got a kernal panic.
Can anyone tell me what next I should try? Did I goof it by partitioning the disk in disk utility? Was there something I should have done with the new drive before installing 10.5?
Also note that I could not get the optical drive to work so have been putting the imac into target mode and using my MBPro (2.16GHz) to do all installation stuff, as well as running disk utilities and disk warrior.
Thanks in advance.
Sheila

OK it does say GUID Partition Table.
That's the right choice.
Do you think this might be from a faulty new hard drive?
It's hard to say. If you have the "system disc" that came with that computer, I'd run the diagnostics on it. If you can't make the optical drive work, there may be other things wrong.
When you assembled that iMac, did you put "thermal paste" (or whatever the official term is) in all the prescribed places? If not, you might have problems causes by overheating.

  • Can't install photoshop cs6 on brand new iMac - "Media db error: 18"

At my company we recently hired a web designer – given his insistence on using the Adobe software, we decided to give Photoshop a try.
We downloaded a trial version and tried to install it on the brand new iMac (no previous installations of adobe stuff) we just bought for the new desigher, but... it's not even installing!
The installation process halts at around 2% and an error screen appears which gives generic instructions ("restart your computer and retry") and points to a log file where one can read "Media db error: 18".
Of course we tried restarting the computer, cleaning up ~/Library, re-downloading the installer... no good – we then downloaded and run an adobe cleanup utility... still no good.
Some people on the internet report they have the same problem... we found several questions on the matter, but no answer (besides "restart your computer" and other generic stuff that we tried and does not work).
We then called Adobe support (Italian support) and they told us they don't give support for trial versions, like we should sight unseen buy a (pricey!) software we can't even install! .
    Can anyone here help?

    Thanks for your help!
No, no beta or previous installations of any Adobe products – we are trying to install to a brand new iMac (just bought last week from the store): it has the latest version of everything (Os: Lion 10.7.4)
Is there any debug switch I can turn on on the installer to get further information on what's going wrong? ("media db error" is a somewhat laconic error message)

  • I want to install hybrid drive in Macbook pro. I bought my Mac book with lion and am now running mountain lion. I was told I needed install disk to set up new drive before restoring from my time capsule. Is this correct and if so how do I get disk osx10?

I purchased a Mac book Pro in Aug 2012 with lion and have upgraded to mountain lion. I currently am looking to install the segate 750 gig hybrid drive. I watching video I shows me needing a OSX 10 disk to boot off of when the new disk is in and the use time capsule to restore system from back up drive to new hybrid. Hope I got this correct so far. that being said my Mac Book did not come with a disk therefore is one available, when I get to point of restoring from back up with it be the same mountain lion system I had. Sorr if this sounds redudant.. Thank you in advance

Connect the new hybrid drive to your MBP.  Start up your MBP holding the OPTION key, the two HDD icons will appear.  Select the 'restore' icon on the right.  When you get to the menu where you have 4 options, select Disk Utility.  Format the drive and then you can use the option of restoring it from Time Machine.
    Ciao.

  • I am installing snow leopard on a new drive unformatted but it does not show the disk to install it on.? do i need to format first with one partition?

I have installed a new drive on my mac book and more ram but the snow leopard install asks which to install the system on but then does not show the drive.
do I have to partition it and name it first. -- if so just one partition?

    Do this:
    Drive Preparation
    1.  Boot from your OS X Installer Disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button.  When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
When formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Complete the OS X installation.

  • Can I install OS9 on a Brand new iMac to run Photoshop 6.0.1?

    Hi there;
Today I purchased a brand new iMac. I have been installing my old applications and found that I cannot install Photoshop 6.0.1. The following is the message shown:
"You cannot open the application "Install Adobe Photoshop 6.0.1" because it is not supported on this system"
My old iMac is a G3 and runs on a Panther. Can I install Mac OS 9 on this new Mac so that I can install Photoshop 6.0.1? If yes, how can I do it?
    Regards.

    Hi KP4ABC;
Since the official position of Adobe is that they are no longer supporting PS 7 at all, I would think your chances with PS 6 are right up there with the snowball in that hot place. In order to get anything that works with any reliability you will have to upgrade, probably to PS CS3.
I have to say that PS CS3 is a significant upgrade over PS 7 which is as far back as I go with Photoshop.

  • Install WXP on a brand new MBA

I have a brand new MBA with LION OS 10.7.3. I have av ECG program for WXP but in the new MBA you must install Windows  7 and then my program won't function. I also have a MAP and on that at installed  WXP when I used SnowLeopard, but after update to LION everything is OK even the ECG program.
Is it possible på downdate LION på SnowLeopard and the use BootCamp 3.0 and install WXP? Does anybody download just BootCamp 3.0 to LION?
Please anybody help me to get WXP on my MBA.

Use Parallels or Fusion if VirtualBox is too complicated. Or, Windows 7 in Boot Camp runs XP programs so why do you not think it will run your program?
You will notice that the other posts regarding getting XP running with Lion Boot Camp never get to the 100% solution. There are no XP drivers for Lion or the new hardware. It you think installing VirtualBox was complicated, you will not do well following the convoluted posts saying how to install XP.

  • Install and migrate to a new drive part 2

Hi -- I know someone else asked and was answered a very similar question to this tonight, but I hope someone can add a little info.
I'm running Tiger 10.4.11 on a 300 main drive. I want to install Leopard, and I want to install it on a new 500 gig main drive.
I think the answer to this is to take out my current main 300 gig drive, install the 500, then install Leopard via the discs. Then I should use Leopard's Migration Assistant, right? My understanding is that Migration Assistant typically facilitates the moving of info between an older computer and a new computer, right? But if I put my original main 300 drive in my second drive bay, will Migration Assistant let me copy everything over from drive 2 to the new drive 1?
    Thanks!

  • Unable to install itunes 9 on brand new computer

Hello I have a brand new compter and I'm trying to install itunes. Each time I get the following message: "This application could not be open. Verify the package exists and that you have access to it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package"
I have read some post with similar problems and I have installed the Windows Install Clean Up - however there is aren't Apple applications on my computer so there is nothing for the Install to Clean up.
Can you please assist me with loading either itunes 9 or an older version of itunes. I have Windows XP
    Thank you

Each time I get the following message: "This application could not be open. Verify the package exists and that you have access to it, or contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer Package"
Hmmm. The installer packages may be getting damaged during the download with that message.
Do you have any better luck downloading a working installer if you use Firefox instead of IE (or vice versa)?

  • Install Snow Leopard over brand new Lion based MacBook Pro

    Dear Forum.
This is actually a hardware question plz this is not a meant as a discussion whether Lion beats Snow Leopard etc.
Plenty of threads around communities tells how to install 10.6.8 over 10.7  But there is a warning sign!!! :
I have a brand new top-of-the-line MacBook Pro (shipped with 10.7.2) and for some reason it won´t even start from a 10.6.8 DVD
I was thinkin´ go scratch the 750 GB HDD at one of my other Macs, but for some reason I´m afraid that Apple now have bugged the HW so it won´t be able to install 10.6.8 no matter how sofisticated changes are made??
Anyone knows or have any experience??
With love from Denmark, Thanks everyone for reading this

so it won´t be able to install 10.6.8 no matter how sofisticated changes are made??

  • Installing and configuring a brand new SSM

    Hi,
Our company decided to switch SSM platform, from the current Windows Server 2003 32 bit with MaxDB to a Windows Server 2003 64bit with MS SQL Server.
We've just installed a brand new SSM system on the new platform and we're now going to start its configuration.
We do not want to migrate any data from the previous installation, so a system copy will not be needed.
    However, we have this question:
What is the procedure to "detach" the old SSM (it only does Early Watch alerts and has the System Landscape maintained)?
Is it necessary or just configuring the new SSM will be enough?
    Thanks
    Antonio

    Hi António Barrote
If your old system is getting satellite system data using TMS/LIS rfc, then you have to remove your old solman from the Transport route.
If the datasource is SLD, then you can stop the communication using the tcode SMSY_SETUP Edit--> Expert settings. Remove the SLD server entry from there.

  • Mac bluetooth now not installed but was previously, brand new???

    Hello,
I would love some help. My brand new iMac (27-inch Mid 2011) serial number C0********HJQ that I purchased this month is having severe bluetooth issues. Up until today the bluetooth was working without any troubles, but after it went into sleep mode my magic mouse and wireless keyboard did not respond. I changed the batteries and they lit up but were not recognised by the machine. The bluetooth icon is no longer visible anywhere in my computer and under the system report>hardware>bluetooth there is no data for the bluetooth. How do i fix this?
note- cannot use keyboard in this process as i only own a usb mouse
    Regards,
    Monique Rennie
    <Edited By Host>

    Open System Preferences > Bluetooth
Make sure the On and Discoverable boxes are selected.
If it says:  No Devices  then click Set Up New Device then follow the instructions.
And tick the box next to:   Show Bluetooth in menu bar

  • T61 R&R on brand new drive

PLEASE HELP...I just received a T61 that was fine except a bad hard drive.  So I purchased a new drive and am trying to use the R&R media that is for this laptop model and I can't seem to figure out what to do.  I want to put it back to factory defaults and just go from there, but it just loops with the Rescue and Recovery.  ANY help at all is GREATLY appreciated.

    jimclik, welcome to the forum,
    B) first; just for clarification this means you have 7 discs in total?   Are the "6" discs labeled 1 of 6, 2 of 6 ....etc. or maybe 1 of 5, 2 of 5...etc.?  Is there a disc called Rescue and Recovery 1 of 1 or a disc with a picture of a lifebelt on it?
    A) You need to boot from the R & R disc, the one with the lifebelt on it.

  • MEGA ISSUES INSTALLING CIV IV on brand new iMac running Windows 7!

So, ya. Basically, my father got a brand spanking new iMac (Second least expensive level currently on the Apple Store). He runs Windows 7 through BootCamp on it because he needs it for his work. So, taking full advantage of that fact, I set myself up an account on the Windows side and tried to install Civilization 4.
    Everything went fine, until....
It froze halfway through installing and I had to power down the computer. Upon rebooting I tried again. To my surprise, after putting the "Install CD" in I saw that the "play" button had replaced the "install" option (why am I putting quote marks around those two words?) Anyhow, I clicked the play button and it was all like "BLAH BLAH BLAH FOLDERS CANNOT BE LOCATED!".
So I searched through the computer's hard drive and deleted 3 empty folders, the only Civilization 4 folders that came up when I searched for the game...
Then, I tried again. No luck. Now after clicking play nothing at all happens.....
    Help?

    Hi,
maybe this one can help http://www.2kgames.com/civ4/support_install.htm
I also noted that Windows 7 (neither 32-bit nor 64-bit) is mentioned in the system requirements of Civ IV as compatible.
So maybe that can also be the cause.
    Hope it helps
    Stefan
