Installing 10.6.8 instead of 10.7

The hard drive on my iMac failed so I had my Mac supplier install a new one, but it has come back with OS10.7 installed - I need to re-install 10.6.8 because I have some programs that won't run otherwise.
When I put in the installer disk however I get a message saying it can't install on to the new hard drive.
Can anyone suggest how I can override 10.7 and install the earlier OS?

Which iMac have you got and what DVD are you using to reinstall Mac OS X? Note that the Late 2009 iMac requires Mac OS X 10.6.2 and the Mid 2010 iMac requires Mac OS X 10.6.3 (in this case, you have to use the DVDs that came with the iMac; the same applies for Mid 2011 iMacs that came with Snow Leopard). There are no Mac OS X Snow Leopard DVD's that include Mac OS X 10.6.8

I assumed this would help my problem with not being able to open apps like Preview or TextEdit since I installed Mountain Lion. Instead, first I'm prompted to enter a password, then once I do that, I get an error box telling me the Library needs repairing. So I click on Repair, and once again I'm prompted for a password, which I enter, then the same error box opens, and so it goes. Can anyone help me with this problem? I'd greatly appreciate it.

Back up all data. Don't continue unless you're sure you can restore from a backup, even if you're unable to log in.
This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. Do so only after verifying that those settings didn't cause the problem. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. To do that, unlock the preference pane using the credentials of an administrator, check the box marked Allow user to administer this computer, then reboot. You can demote the problem account back to standard status when this step has been completed.
Triple-click the following line to select it. Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    { sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -Rh $UID:staff ~ $_ ; sudo chmod -R u+rwX ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ ; } 2> /dev/null
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning to be careful. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command. If you see a message that your username "is not in the sudoers file," then you're not logged in as an administrator.
The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2 (optional)
Step 1 should give you usable permissions in your home folder. This step will restore special attributes set by OS X on some user folders to protect them from unintended deletion or renaming. You can skip this step if you don't consider that protection to be necessary, and if everything is working as expected after step 1.
Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select
    Utilities ▹ Terminal
from the menu bar. A Terminal window will open.
In the Terminal window, type this:
    res
Press the tab key. The partial command you typed will automatically be completed to this:
    resetpassword
Press return. A Reset Password window will open. You’re not  going to reset a password.
Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select
     ▹ Restart
    from the menu bar.

Why is Firefox add-on (Crowdstar Gamebar) installed on Internet Explorer instead? Some of my game friends can see and use it on Firefox after installing it on Firefox.
    My Firefox is version 3.6.9.

That is not a Firefox addon, it is an installer package that can install anything it wants on your PC. As far as why it installed on IE and not Firefox, that would be a question for technical support for that product.

  • Newbie: does ADF install/run with Eclipse instead of JDeveloper?

    Hi,
Can ADF install/run with Eclipse instead of JDeveloper?
    Thx

If you mean can you design ADF applications with Eclipse then yes, you can do that with Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse. It isn't as full-featured as the JDeveloper experience, though.

  • Why can't I use the fafsa website after downloading Firefox 5.0? Do I have to now uninstall the Firefox 5.0 and install their supported browers instead?

It seems that fafsa does not support the Firefox 5.0 browser. I would need to uninstall the upgrade and install their supported browsers instead. I've encountered too many problems after installing Firefox and now I'm considering uninstalling Firefox and reinstalling Internet Explorer.

  • Install wine to /opt instead of /usr; needed PKGBUILD changes

I have the latest wine installed via multilib with no modifications (installed simply by pacman -S wine). However, this wine does not work with a program I need to have. Wine 1.2 does, and luckily there is a wine-stable in the AUR that is in the 1.2 range. However, one other app I need only works with 1.3, so I have to have both.
The wine-stable package is found here: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=35486
What would I need to change in the PKGBUILD to get it to install wine to /opt instead of /usr? Taking a look, I think in this portion:
    msg2 "Building Wine..."
    cd "$srcdir/$pkgname_real-32-build"
    ../$pkgname_real/configure \
    --prefix=/usr \
    --sysconfdir=/etc \
    --with-x
    make
I would need to change --prefix=/usr \   to --prefix=/opt \ and in this section:
    msg2 "Packaging Wine..."
    cd "$srcdir/$pkgname_real-32-build"
    make prefix="$pkgdir/usr" install
    mkdir -p "$pkgdir/etc/wine"
I would need to change the make prefix to $pkgdir/opt
Does this seem right or am I missing something?

Sounds about right, although normally in opt you'd have
    /opt/package_name/...
I think you should also skip the sysconfdir bit.

  • Why did the new Ffox install in \Apps\Data\ instead of \Program Files\? what a mess.

Using XP, I had reservations about upgrading, but Ffox Help refused to allow questions about upgrading, until I did :-(
Instead of replacing the existing installation, it added a second, messing up my start menu, which still runs the older version.
But the new version has disabled without explanation or advice, about half of my extensions/add-ons/plug-ins, including AVG, my security program.
In addition, the Add-ons Mgr >> More links just take me stupidly to the AVG website with no clue what the problem is, nor how to describe my compatibility need to vendor. (Mozilla probably knows the problem with each estranged vendor, but did not choose to pass that on in the error message.)
    In addition, the Ffox page that brought me (Add-ons disabled by upgrade) to 'ask a question', indicated (by offering to install 3.6), that all of this hassle was known before I was forced into it, and I should have known by telepathy that 7.01 was all an avoidable mistake if Mozilla had allowed my question without requiring me to install 7 first ;-( {I know you are sorry. Please open the upgrade problems page if you value your reputation for intelligence.}

Thank you for your prompt reply.
I am a little confused. I thought it was not supposed to install without Admin priv., which should have required Admin. or not installed at all. (sigh)
The whole Add-on, Extension, Plug-in thing seems a bit complex, but I now gather that Add-ons are adverts for additional software, & there is an Add-on Manager that also handles Extensions & plug-ins (difference?). Half of my dozen extensions are disabled, and won't update. A third of my 2 dozen plug-ins are up-to-date, 2 thirds requiring messy research to even determine if they are supported any more (?).
Would it help for me to uninstall either 7 or 3.6 or both under Admin user login?
And since I have doubts of the usefulness of many of these add-ons, will I have to do all the Mozilla research before I uninstall 7, to avoid getting locked out of the forum again? (or is there a way around that website problem? or perhaps leave 7 installed, but for AVG safety reasons just use the 3.6 for now?)
Is there a comparison list of 3.6 & 7 features I have not been able to find?
(Perhaps I can just uninstall 7 and forget it for now.)

  • Can BI 4.0 be installed on Windows enterprise instead of Windows server?

Can I install BI 4.0 FP3 on my laptop which runs Windows 7 enterprise instead of on a windows server?  The prerequisite check gives only "yellow warning" fo rthe windows server version and shows as "optional".  Does that mean it is OK to install on a non-server version windows?
    Thanks for any input!

Not recommended. Installing the BI Platform 4.0 Server product on your laptop would likely completely tank your laptop to the point where it is unusable. The BI Platform 4.0 product is a massive install and we recommend installing it on a server because you need a very powerful system for it to run correctly. Installing on a laptop would give you a very poor impression of the product.

  • Install SolMan 4.0SR1 instead of 4.0 !

    Hi all,
I know, SolMan 4.0 SR1 is out for 8-12 weeks now, but unfortunately - mostly because of older shipments - some customers still do have 4.0 (SR0) which is really complicated to install. As I had just yesterday again a customer trying this, I wanted to please ask you to check the SolMan packs and then order an SR1 if you shouldn't find SR1 on the SolMan box.
I did 4.0 SR1 installations totally smooth without any issues (perhaps 1-2 repeats - but that was it). So, thanks a lot to the IBM/SAP team for creating this SR1 package instead of trying to make the 4.0 package possible with "millions of notes" )

What's your question?  Is it OK?  That's entirely your call.
You'll not have access to the new features in Xcode and Objective C and iOS 5, including the integration of Interface Builder into Xcode 4, and the Objective C ARC reference counting features.
But what you'll have should work.
You'll end up sorting out the examples and documentation that has dependencies on the newer versions, but that's expected.
The developer forums see more traffic, and (if your'e getting started and not in the developer program) you'll want to avail yourself of the mailing lists including the Apple Xcode User's mailing list, and discussions such as this one at StackOverflow.

  • Satellite-A300-23E - Can I install Windows 7 Ultimate instead of Win7 Premium

    Hello,
I bought a TOSHIBA laptop which has the following model: Satellite-A300-23E (Operational system is Windows Vista Home Premium)
I know that TOSHIBA offers an upgrade to Windows 7 but the problem is that they will provide me with Windows 7 Home Premium which I don't want.
Thus, I'm thinking to buy a full version of Windows 7 Ultimate (DVD).
Will be there any technical/software problems in case I remove the original operational system of the laptop and install Windows 7 Ultimate ?
By the way, I used Windows 7 Upgrade Advisor and the result was positive !
    Please, I need your help

You should try Vista's drivers, as I know, they are compatible:
    For Webcam try this one:
    http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/webcam-en-20090422172230.zip
For touchpad, there are 2 drivers:
    Alps http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/tpdrv-en-20090320124756.zip
    Synaptics http://support1.toshiba-tro.de/tedd-files2/0/tpdrv-en-20090320132707.zip
talking about touchpad drivers, it can be Alps or Synaptics for your model, or can be both.
