Installing 10.6 on iMac using MacBook Pro install DVD

Hi
I have a 24inch intel 2 core iMac from early 2008 with 10.5.6 installed and I just bought a MacBook Pro with Snow Leopard. I want to upgrade my iMac to 10.6 but before I purchase it I wanted to check if my apps etc would work.
I used the MacBook Pro dvd to install to an external drive and then I restored that drive. I then migrated my iMac install unto the external 10.6 drive and I am now running from the external drive on the iMac.
All seems to be ok for now but should this work? Do the different cd's have specific drivers or setup specific to the device i.e. might I be missing software or have the wrong software installed and thus invalidating my test?
Yes, I know what I have done is not strictly allowed but there is no other way to test an install without purchasing and I can't afford downtime to fix any problems.
Thanks

Hi cypher6x;
If you are willing to ignore the fact of it being illegal, then you will be leaving yourself open to the fact that the vast majority of the time when one uses hardware specific DVD for different hardware it doesn't install at all. When it does it usually causes more problems that it is worth so go ahead and pay the $29 and do it legally and correctly.

It installs and runs. I will purchase the proper dvd *IF all my apps works ok* otherwise I will not be upgrading anytime soon. I am just trying to ascertain if my test is valid.
It would cost Apple more to package up different dvds for all their products. I imagine they may have different installers though that selects the items.
Either or, it will be hard to say unless I do a diff against fresh installs using both dvd's.

  • Can I use macbook pro install Disk with macbook?

    Hi everyone,
I have a macbook and macbook pro, I had to reinstall system after harddrive went on the macbook. I can't find my macbook restore disks/installation disks. Would I be able to use the macbook pro install disks with macbook?
    Much appreciate your help.

It might work but it's risky. The MBP installation disks may well not contain the right drivers for the MacBook. It would be better, if at all possible, if you contacted Apple tech support and asked for a new set of disks for your MacBook. They'll send you a set for a reasonable fee. If you can't wait, perhaps there's an Apple Store or other Apple dealer near you that would have a set you could borrow in-store to do the reinstallation.

  • Installing OS X on iBook using Macbook Pro disks

Is this possible? I've lost my iBook disks and borrowed my friends' disks for his Pro. When I click to reinstall, it loads from disk but a kernal error comes up, "We are hanging here..."
Is it not possible for me to reinstall using his disks? If not, why?

    Hi
No its not possible - think about it?
Grey Installer disks are hardware specific. A MacBook Pro in terms of hardware is completely different to an iBook. Different CPU, different board components, different graphics card. Besides if the version of the OS is 10.5 for the MBP then it's more than possible that the iBook may be a model that does not qualify Leopard's minimum requirements.

  • Can I use MacBook Pro install disc for boot disk on Macbook 4,1?

    Hi,
I have a White MacBook 4,1 running OSX 10.5.8. I'm trying to clone my HD and ran into a filesystem error. Ran Disc Utility and had same errors. Now I need to run Disc Utility from Bootdisc but I can't find it. I do however have my newer DVD from my 13" MBP with 10.6.7. Can I use this to boot from and run disc utility to fix error?
    If not, any suggestions?
    Thanks
    Frank

Since we installed Mavericks on both our Macs (MacBook Pro and iMac) it is not possible anymore to connect to each other.

Have you tried emailing it to the iMac, use Dropbox or iCloud to transfer or transferring through iChat?

I thiunk the graphic card is defective and need to run hwt

    You don't.
Need a internal optical drive and the Hardware Test on disks is old and outdated anyway.
Your machine has lasted a long time, congratulations, they usually only last about 4-5 years.
They get clogged up with dust and overheat, kills the video card, there is nothing you can do as it's hardware damage over time.

How can I install Snow Leopard on my 15" MacBook Pro without using its DVD drive?

I'm assuming your dvd drive is broken? if you have a thumb drive large enough (8GB or better), you can use another computer to make a bootable image from the install dvd to the thumb drive. then you can install from the the thumb drive.

Cannot install Windows XP Professional on my MacBook Pro using Boot Camp. When I get to the point of inserting the Windows disc and clicking 'Install' at the Boot Camp Assistant screen, it keeps telling me that it cannot find the Install Disc. The installation disc I am using is a new full install disc. I have tried to do the same thing using a Windows 7 disc with the same results. Does anyone have any answers. I am getting desperate!

  • Installing OS on used Macbook pro

I just bought a used Macbook pro, It has no OS and no install discs. What is the best way to install OS? Contact Apple? Is there another option besides purchasing a new install disc? Thanks!

    http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/macbookpro/stats/macbook_pro2.0.html
You have a 2.0 intel core duo. It originally came with Tiger OS 10.4 installed. Your options again are to contact Apple and get replacement disks or purchase Leopard OS 10.5.

A FW cable would be far faster & Easier, but with Ethernet you need a compatible version of Migration Assistant running on both Macs.

  • I bought a used MacBook Pro and didn't come with an install disc.

I recently purchased a used MacBook Pro, it is the 2006 15.4inch, with 1.83GHz Intel core duo processor. It didn't come with RAM, a charger or the instal disc and the battery was dead. I installed RAM, bought a battery and charger and it booted up no problem, but I can't get past the login because I don't know the previous owners password. How do I get passed this point so? What OSX do I buy?

In the mean time try this: Run Mac Setup Assistant -
Restart the machine with the Command and S keys held down, and type the following commands into the prompt in order:
    mount -uw /
    mv /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb /var/db/netinfo/local.nidb.old
    mv /var/db/.AppleSetupDone /var/db/.AppleSetupDone.old
    usr/libexec/create_nidb
    shutdown -h now
The Setup Assistant will reappear the next time your computer is turned on. Be sure to enter the commands properly. You will be able to setup your user name password, etc. You can then delete the previous owners User.
