Installing 10.8 on secondary disk?

I am running 10.6, and want to try out 10.8 to see how my stuff transfers. I've bought 10.8 from Apple Store, ran it, and chose a blank secondary disk to install it on. It only took a few seconds, and now it wants to reboot. I want to make sure it doesn't touch my main 10.6 volume, and to try importing all my data/apps/settings from it onto the new clean 10.8 volume. What do I need to do - do I really "click Restat to install OS X" like it wants me to? Do I need to first reboot off the new 10.8 volume and run migration assistant or can I somehow install and migrate everything onto the 10.8 while still in 10.6, and then boot off the 10.8 later to see how everything works?

If you have the installer on your internal hard drive, before doing the install it would be eaiser to download a copy of Carbon Copy Cloner or SuperDuper and then clone the internal drive to the external drive.  Restart holding the Option key and then choose the external drive to boot from.  After you boot, run the !0.8 installer so the build occurs on the external drive.  When it finishes installing and restarts again, hold the Option key so you can complete the boot process on the external drive.  That way you will have your applicaitons over there also and can test things.
How is that easier than just doing what he started out to do?
Install it on the empty drive, let it restart, and then just use Setup Assistant to migrate his stuff from the internal drive.

  • Installing on a secondary disk

    Hello,
I've buy a new computer with and SSD Disk for SO (Winwos 7 Ultimate) and a Secondary Disk. How is the best choise to install the CS4 Suite (Photoshop, Dreamweaver etc)? Installing on primary disk (SSD) or on secondary disk?
    Thank's much.

    Welcome to the forum.
Most Adobe programs really want to be installed onto the system disc, C:\.
However, some users have managed to install them, and run them fine, from other HDD's. However, some users have experienced issues, when installed on other than C:\.
Personally, I like to have all programs installed on C:\, but then I am very "old school."
    Good luck,

  • Installing OVI Suite on secondary hard disk

is there any solution for installing OVI Suite on secondary hard disc??
( i have asus ee and there is no free space on primary C: hard disc so i need to instal it on external hard disc, how can i change instalation folder??)
    thanks!
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I have not tried this myself, but this recent thread
    /t5/Nokia-Ovi-Suite/OVI-Installation-and-installation-parameters/td-p/878683
seems to document some command line options on the NOS installer that can be used to specifiy, among other things, a specific folder to install the software to. I suspect that a lot of files will still end up on drive C (because the stuff that goes into your user profile, and into "Common Files" subfolders), but this should at least allow you to ease the burden somewhat.

  • Windows 7 -- iTunes won't recognize library on secondary disk

This is long, so please bear with me. I have read many similar threads,
but none quite hit the same problem I have.
I was happily running iTunes 32-bit on Windows XP until a couple of
months ago. Various things (including a different motherboard) forced
my hand into upgrading to Windows 7. Of course, this upgrade requires
you to completely reinstall all applications. I backed up all of my disks
and performed the upgrade to Windows.
I will state right now that the iTunes installation (program itself) is
on one disk, and the library on another. It has been that way for years,
as most of my music is either WAV or AIFF and needs to reside on its
own disk because of storage size.
I dutifully downloaded the latest iTunes version and installed it. Of course,
it defaults music to a directory in the Music folder. I read through a
bunch of threads, and pointed iTunes to the existing upper-level music
library. No dice -- won't acknowledge that library, but also doesn't error.
So I go to my backups and copy the iTunes base files. First to their
original directory (on the secondary disk), but also to the Music folder.
    Still nothing. I've tried:
Reinstalling iTunes and copying the base files from backup before running.
Reinstalling iTunes and copying the base files after running the first time.
    All variations of above.
I'm willing to try about anything at this point. My music files are safe and,
at 12K songs and 285GB, are not candidates to be moved to the same
    disk as the program installation.
Any ideas? Thanks for reading this novella.

    Hello Joel,
Thank you for providing so much information about what is going on.  It sounds like you have setup iTunes to save new content to your external hard drive in iTunes>Preferences, but it sounds like iTunes is not opening iTunes Library.itl file on the external drive.  You have one last step to take to have iTunes point to your new external hard drive rather than your Music folder:
Steps to create or choose a different iTunes Library file
If iTunes is running, quit iTunes.
If you are using Windows, hold down the Shift key and from the Start menu and choose All Programs > iTunes > iTunes.
You should see the following screen:
    Additional information
If you do not see the screen above, then you did not hold the correct key at the correct time. You may want to try again. Note that if you pinned iTunes to the Start menu programs, and open it that way, it may not work.
Once you select "Choose Library," you will need to navigate to the iTunes Library.itl file on your external drive.

  • Problem installing windows on a secondary hard drive

    Hi,
Here's my issue (sorry for my english, I'm french):
-I have a macbook pro 15" with OSx Mavericks.
-I have a SDD harddrive PLUS a 500GO HDD connected to the optical slot.
I want to install windows on my secondary hard drive.
What I have done so far:
-I've cloned my older windows partition.
-I've created a bootcamp partition on my secondary HDD.
-I've restaured my clone to the new bootcamp partition on that secondary HDD.
Up to that point, everything seemed alright.
BUT when I try to boot on the windows partition, I get this message:
no bootable device insert boot disk and press any key
As if my MBP couldn't boot on a secondary hard drive.
I've looked for answers on this forum but didn"t find anything.
    thanks,
    m

The only difference between your setup and mine is that I have the SSD in the optical slot and the windows image is on my HD. I boot from the optical slot though, as all my regular Mac stuff is on the SSD. All I can think to do is use Bootcamp to delete the partition and try again. It sure seems like it should work.

  • How can I select the minimum size of Elements 10? It won't install due to lack of disk space on C:

I have just purchased and downloaded Elements 10. Can't install it due to insufficient disk space on my C drive. I have enough space on my D drive, but it will not install there, probably because my sustem files are on C drive. The Install wisard does not provide for a selection of the size of Elements 10. Is there a way to select the minimum size? If so, how can I do this?

There is not an option to customize the installation.  The system requirements for Photoshop Elements 10 request that you at least have 4 gigabytes free, plus more for installation, how much free space do you have on your C drive?

  • I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk

I have Lion on an external hard-drive and I want to install it on the internal disk. How can I proceed?

I recently completed a clean install of Lion on an internal SSD. After wiping it clean, I used a thumb drive with SL on it to boot and then another thumb drive with Lion on it. It worked just fine. The only thing to be aware of is that if you use the thumb to install Lion from... it will not install a recovery partition and you'll have to use the thumb in the future.
That's what I wanted anyway so it's working out just fine. Good luck.
I should add... I used the SL thumb to actually boot from and used Disk Utlities to wipe the internal SSD. It does work and there are Apple posts that can guide you through the thumb drive process. I used copycat to create both the SL boot and Lion.

  • Wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk

I need to wipe my iMac and reinstall OS X Leopard. I have the install disks, but my CD drive doesn't work and can't read the disk.
Is there a way for me to wipe and install OSX Leopard without the disk?
    Thanks.

You can turn the 2011 iMac into a Firewire Optical drive.
Put the Leo Install Disc into the 2011 iMac, boot the 2011 iMac while holding t key to put it into FW Target Disk Mode, with a FW cable connect the the 2, boot older one holding Alt key, choose the Leo Install Disc to boot from.

  • Installing snow leopard by target disk firewire

i am re installing snow leopard by target disk fire wire. the installer hangs after the first reboot. it leaves a folder called install data with loads of.pkg files. trying an external dvd drive but that's even slower. any ideas?
    thanks

Can your iMac even startup from a Snow Leopard disc? In order to install Snow Leopard on your MBP you need to boot the iMac from the Snow Leopard installer DVD. The MBP is then started in TDM. Then follow this:
         1. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
size.)  Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.  Set the number of
partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
(Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
         2. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer.  Proceed
with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
         3. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
you will be running a fresh install of OS X.  You can now begin the update process
by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
             installation current.
When the installation is completed the MBP should restart into the Setup Assistant of Snow Leopard.
I should warn you that the above may not work because if your iMac came with Snow Leopard, then it came with a version that was exclusive to that model meaning it may not work on the MBP, and that may be why you couldn't boot it.
You can order replacement discs for the MBP from Apple:

I own both Photoshop Elements and Photoshop (the original editor).  I find the elements editor to be too cumbersome to use and would just like to edit using Photoshop.  When I try to install Photoshop as a secondary editor in elements I get an error message that I don't need to this because it is already supported on the edit menu and task bar.  I can not find any way to send images to Photoshop for editing - all I can do is send them to elements editor or the premier editor.  Can someone tell me how to send them to Photoshop?  Thanks!

    Hi,
The D810 requires Camera Raw 8.6 or later - the latest version that is compatible with Photoshop Elements 12 is Camera Raw 8.5 as far as I can see.
You need to either buy a new version of Photoshop Elements or use the free Adobe DNG converter.

You can go strait to SL, all you need is a retail SL DVD available from Apple for $20. The US online store has them at:

  • How do I install InDesign on a secondary computer?

I bought InDesign before the Cloud existed (i.e. it's not connected to my Cloud) and I want to install it onto a secondary PC, but it won't allow me to do this through the Cloud. Is there any other way I can install?
    Thanks!

If you do not own the disc(s) then you can probably download and install the way you originally did as long as you have an available activation left.  It depends which version you need...

A 2003 MS office sounds like a Windows version.  A 2004 MS Office that was Mac compatible can not be run natively on a new MBA since the Lions do not run PPC applications.  You will have to get a newer edition of MS Office that is compatible with your new MBA.
