Installing 10g on Windows XP Pro.

I very recently downloaded Oracle 10g. I would like to install it on my external USB2 hard drive and be able to access it from both my laptop PC and my desktop PC.
I presume installing it from one of my PC's would be straigthforward. But what do I need to do on the other PC to be able to access it from there as well? I can plug my external USB2 hard drive into either PC.
I am very experienced in mainframe databases but very much a novice in Oracle. Any help and guidance would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Gunny

This is unusual, but it may be doable. I have the equipment myself to attempt it, so I'll give it a try. Essentially, you would have to perform the install on each machine with the target filesystem pointing to the location on the USB drive that you wish to use. Once the install has been run to create identical environments on both machines, you could create databases to run from that same USB drive.
I could not vouch for performance, and there are probably formidable problems attendant to this approach, but it may just work. It might be a fun thing to try too, but don't use it for anything important.
Here's the gotcha: You will have to make sure that every Oracle process is stopped before you will be able to remove the USB drive from the system prior to moving it. Otherwise, the Safely Remove Hardware tool will refuse to let the drive go. You should also be aware that if you just disconnect a USB drive from a system when a bunch of files are open on it, your system may hang or crash. You will probably also corrupt the open files. Although Oracle is usually pretty good about recovery in various unusual crash scenarios, there is no predicting what it would do in this situation.
Here is the scenario that I think may work:
1. Connect the USB disk device to the first machine.
2. Run the Oracle 10G Install on the first machine with the USB drive as the target. (Note that some things will be installed in Program Files.) (Be sure to record the name and path of the Oracle Home so that you can use it on the second machine.)
3. Close all Oracle processes that get created in Windows Services. (I recommend setting the services you want to use to Manual so that they will not attempt to start automtically and setting Oracle services you do not intend to use to Disabled.)
4. Use the Safely Remove Hardware tool to remove the device from the machine.
5. Connect the device to the second machine being sure that it has the same drive letter.
6. In the USB drive's file system, delete the 10G Oracle Home folder that was created by the install on the first machine.
7. Install Oracle 10G on the second machine being sure to use the same name and path for the Oracle Home.
The drive letter for the USB drive must be the same on both machines because any databases that you create in this setup will have hard paths to datafiles mapped in their control files. If the drive letters differed between the machines or if they changed over time, the database would not start.
This looks like an interesting experiment, but actual use may prove more difficult than it is worth. I will certainly try this soon to see if it actually works. If it works well, I might be able to put it to good use myself.
Kind regards,
Russ Cannon

  • Calling WebForms 10g on Windows XP Pro (SP2)

    Hello,
When I try to invoke WebForms through the Web on Windows XP Pro (SP2) workstation, I get the following message:
Oracle Application Server 10g Forms Services
The Forms Listener Servlet is up and running.
    1) What does this mean ?
    2) Do I need to install JInitiator on my Windows XP Pro Clients ?
    PT

    Hello,
I am trying to call-up my Forms through the URL in the address field in my Internet Explorer Browser. A typical call looks like this:
    http://Linux2005:7784/forms90/lservlet?config=KatzWebForms
On one of my Windows XP Pro (SP2) clients, I have Oracle Forms/Reports 6i installed as well as Oracle 9i Client software. under the Program Files, I have an Oracle folder that contains the following sub-folders:
    Jinitiator 1.3.1.9
    Jinitiator 1.3.1.13
Other Windows XP Pro (SP2) client computers only have Oracle 6i software installed and have no Jinitiator versions whatsoever.
    1) Are you suggesting that I should install/upgrade to Jinitiator 1.4.x all my Windows XP Pro (SP2) client computer ?
    Paolo
PS: The funny thing is that I can call-up my FOrms on one Windows 98SE client computer.
PS2: I did check that Internet Explorer has a JVM (Java Virtual Machine) installed.

  • Unable to install Lightroom on Windows 7 Pro 4GB

    hello
I have a Creative Cloud Subscription, I am using a Dell Vostro 3360 laptop. Windows 7 Pro SP1, 64-bit, up-to-date. 4 GB RAM, laptop screen is 1366x768, plus ane external larger display. Graphics card is "Intel HD Graphics 4000".
I read the Adobe document "minimum requirements for Lightroom" that says:
    Windows
    Intel® Pentium® 4 or AMD Athlon® 64 processor*
DirectX 10–capable or later graphics card
Windows 7 with Service Pack 1, Windows 8, or Windows 8.1
    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended)
    2GB of available hard-disk space
    1024x768 display
DVD-ROM drive required if purchasing Adobe® Photoshop® Lightroom® retail boxed version
Internet connection required for Internet-based services†
and it appears that my hardware configuration is quite sufficuient.
However I don't see Lightroom in the Creative Cloud application list of downloadables app.
When I try to download from here: creative.adobe.com/products/lightroom nothing happens.
    What is happening here?
    Thanks
    Bruno Bonnefont - [email protected]

in fact, yes, I had a previous release of Lightroom installed on my PC (I did not use it & I forgot about it).
Yes, I uninstalled it, then a Lightroom entry appeared in the Creative Cloud app, and I have been able to download it and then start it properly.
    The issue is now closed.

  • Installing 10g on Windows XP machine JVM launcher "Can't find main class"

I am trying to install 10g Release 2 on a Windows XP machine. I downloaded the zip from the OTN. Unzipped the file. No problems. Tried to run the OUI, it opened up a shell and said to wait. The shell closed and a message frome the JVM Launcher displayed "Can't find main class. Program will exit." I have seen several people on this and other discussion boards having this problem, but have yet to get a solution. Please help.

What's the value of CLASSPATH environment variable? Possibly a non-oracle application has set this variable and the installer catches it. If there is such a variable, comment it out and try again.

  • Installed 10g on Windows 2003 computer with existing 9i

Hi, I have just installed 10g on a PC running Win2003 with an existing 9i. When I tried logging on to 10g, it's telling me TNS protocol adapter error. I configured a new 10g listener and setup the tnsnames as well. When I started the 10g listener, it's telling me LISTENER already started (the 9i one). I stopped the 9i listener and started the 10g one, and was able to log on to 10g.
Now, how would I be able to access 9i and 10g at the same time? Also, I noticed that the 9i listener shows as Windows service, but the 10g does not.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

10g listener should be able to server 9i database as well.
If your 9i instance is not self register with 10g listener, run netca to configure your listener to include 9i instance.

For your info, I was finally able to resolve this issue, by changing my environment variable in the formsweb.cfg file as follows:

and disabling the Sun JVM installed under the advanced internet options under Internet Explorer.

  • Cannot install 10g on Windows XP

I downloaded the 10g for windows installation and the installation fails at 100% when the OracleCService is trying to start up.
I read on Metalink about the isClusterMode flag, and I have run both, the root setup.exe and the one that's inside the "install" directory. I got the same error about the service cannot start.
What's the workaround for this issue?.

  • Install iTunes on Windows XP Pro x64 Edition

I just recently purchased a new system (Windows 64-bit) running XP Professional x64 Edition Service Pack 2.
Is iTunes supported for XP Pro x64 Edition?
    Thanks for any help.

No, there is no 64 bit edition of iTunes for Windows XP, only Vista.
You can, however, install the 32 bit version. You will then have to download and install the 64 bit Gear drivers for burning from the Gear site:
    http://www.gearsoftware.com/support/drivers.cfm
Unfortunately you can not get the 64 bit drivers for the iPhone and Touch. If you have one of these, you may find this link interesting:

  • Error installing 10g on Windows Server 2003

I am trying to install Oracle 10g on a Windows Server 2003 box. I'm following the instructions listed here: http://www.oracle.com/technology/obe/10gr2_db_single/install/wininst/wininst_otn.htm
Everything seems to go fine up until step 8. My Oracle Net Configuration Assistant fails. I get an error dialog titled "java.exe - Entry Point Not Found" the error message is "The procedure entry point longjmp could not be located in the dynnamik link library orauts.dll."
Does anyone have an idea what's wrong here?
    Thanks,

The OUI 10.2.0.1 of the base release software distribution was used to install the new
component from the base release on top of the 10.2.0.2 Oracle Home.
The OUI 10.2.0.1 is not compatible with the 10.2.0.2 orauts.dll installed under the Oracle Home. OUI 10.2.0.1 and 10.2.0.2 are using different versions of orauts.dll. The OUI 10.2.0.2 located under %ORACLE_HOME%\oui\bin should be used for installing any new component (from the base release):
    1. Run the setup.exe program located under %ORACLE_HOME%\oui\bin
    2. Select the "products.xml" from the 10.2.0.1 DVD under database\stage or under the staging area
    3. Select the component to be installed
    4. After installing the additional component from the base release software distribution,
    re-apply the current patchset, e.g. 10.2.0.2
