Installing 3rd party SSD drive in xserve 1,1 (2x2GHz Xeon)

hi apple, et al.  now that you have discontinued the xserve, will you please tell me how i can use a crucial 128GB SSD in a sonnet adapter in an ADM sled?  i have installed, the xserve will not recognize the ssd.  restart.  nothing.  not in sys profiler, not in disk util, nowhere.  the sled glows orange, then red.  upon restart the sled is green, but still no drive.  unplugging and plugging the sled, back to orangethenred light....
come on.
is there a jumper i need to change?  anything i can do here??  this is incredibly frustrating as the only reason this will not work is that you guys have hardcoded the acceptable drive units, right???
i have no intention of giving up my xserve as it ... ahem, serves all my needs perfectly.  but i would like to upgrade the boot drive to ssd.
HOW CAN I DO THIS???????
thank you very much for any ideas.

I'm in the same boat. Did you ever get an SSD to work reliably as aboot volume in your 1,1 Xserve?

  • Adding third-party SSD drives to Xserve

Has anyone tried this? I would like to buy a new Xserve and migrate to 10.6, but since my application would benefit greatly from SSDs, I would like to buy build an Xserve with a SSD boot drive, and two SSD drives in RAID1. Since Apple doesn't offer SSDs as a drive bay option, has anyone here successfully done it on their own?
    ...Rene

Yes, I can't see a reason either why a third-party drive (e.g., http://www.plianttechnology.com/lightning_ls.php ) be used. I would just like to hear from someone who has actually done it on a the newer Nehalem Xserves. My application is very database bound (many small, random reads and writes), and I think it would benefit greatly from an SSD.

  • Just Bought 13 Inch MBP - Can I Install 3rd Party SSD w/o SATA Bottlenecks

Apparently, it has shipped with Boot ROM Version: MBP55.00AC.B03
In reading the posts, this appears to have the EFI 1.7 firmware.
Can I install a Crucial 128GB SSD drive and get 3GB speeds? Or am asking for problems?
    Any help would be appreciated.
    thank you

Firstly if you get 3 GB per second speed you will have broken all records to date I think. 3 Gb would be the best to hope for. Sorry, I just had to be my smartaxx self to get my day started.
I have no help for you but since no one else is responding, my SuperTalent 256GB SSD would not work fore more than an hour or so, depending on how hard the drive was working, with the EFI 1.7 but it works endlessly with EFI 1.6. But this is only since the new 1819 firmware was flashed to the SSD. I think Crucials SSDs are the same as SuperTalents but there might be differences I am not aware of. They both use firmware updates with the exact same numbers such as 1571, 1819 and so on.

  • Newly installed 3rd-party DVD drive is loud

I have just installed a Pioneer DVR-115D in my old G5. When it writes and sometimes when it reads, it becomes really really loud... as loud as all the fans of my G5 going at full speed. Did I do something wrong during the installation? Do I need some sort of update?
PS. I used Patchburn to install the driver.
    Thanks for any help.

    Max,
Did you ever resolve this issue? I've just upgraded to the DVR-115D, and I'm having the same problem.

  • I have a 3rd party SSD to put in my mac mini how do i get osx on it i do not have a external hard drive

I want to put a 3rd party SSD in my mac mini and I no how to put in inside the mac mini but, how do I get osx on it preferably Yosemite I do not have a external hard drive just the one that comes with the mac mini and my 3rd party internal SSD please help me.

The easy way is to Purchase an External Enclosure like the Startech USB 3.0 S2510BPU33 with UASP, its a Super Fast connection, SATA 3.1 @ 6 Gb/s.
Just Pop your SSD inside the enclosure and use OS X Disk Utility to clone your existing HDD. This enclosure is So Fast you would not even have to open up your Mini to install the SSD, just Boot Externally you would Never Know the difference and your Warranty won't be affected by opening it up.
What Mini do you have ?

  • Clean Install On 3rd Party SSD

My brother has given me his 2010 MacBook Pro with a 256GB SSD running 10.9 and I want to do a clean install of OS X 10.10. Can this be done with a Bootable USB? I have read a few things about this called Trim and was wondering if I need to do something else? It is an aftermarket SSD (256GB OCZ Agility 3 SSD Drive) can I do a clean install straight away or do I need to do something else? Sorry for the newbie question and sorry if this has been asked, but I could not find an answer anywhere.

To create a bootable USB, you use Diskmaker X
    <http://liondiskmaker.com>
TRIM is a nice addition, but not essential.  In Yosemite, the only way to enable TRIM for a 3rd party SSD, is to disable some Mac OS X security features.
    <https://www.cindori.org/trim-enabler-and-yosemite/>
TRIM is a way for the file system to tell the SSD that a set of storage blocks were just deleted from a file, and the SSD is allowed to pre-erase them so they are ready to be re-used by the SSD.  And SSD cannot overwrite a block with data in it.  The SSD must perform a special kind of erase that when issued erases a much larger region of storage.  So the SSD, used a block remapping algorithm that takes a pre-erased block and write to that, then remaps that block so it looks like the block the file system asked to be written.  The file system thinks it has overwritten the block it specified, but in reality it wrote to a totally different physical block, and the SSD just makes it look like it.
To be able to do this the SSD needs a pool of pre-erased blocks, or it much find a region to erase, save any blocks in that region that have active data on them, then if necessary re-write blocks it could not find new home for, and write the data the file system wanted written.  This read, erase, write is more time consuming, so it pays for the SSD to have a pool of pre-erased blocks.  SSDs generally "Over Provisioned" so that they always have spares that file system does not know about.  Those over provisioned spares are also used to replace blocks and regions that have exceeded their write life (SSDs have a limited number of writes and then blocks and regions start to fail).
The SSD when idle will try to consolidate regions so it can have a pool of pre-erased blocks.  TRIM support just gives the SSD a larger pool so that if you are doing a huge write (copying some multi-gigabyte sized files disk to disk), the SSD will not easily drain its pool of pre-erased blocks.
But Mac OS X will still run faster with an SSD, even without TRIM, than it would on a rotating hard disk.  It will always read faster, and as long as you are not doing non-stop writes, the SSD will catch up and maintain a pool of pre-erased blocks for the next moderate write.
Some SSD vendors give more of the SSD to over provisioning, such as OWC where their SSD sizes are 240, 480, 960, instead of 256, 512, 1024, with the difference going to create a larger over provisioning pool so the SSD has more storage the file system does not know about to try and keep ahead of large write operations.

  • 3rd party ssd as secondary drive

OK so after doing research on installing my samsung evo hard drive I found that yosemite does not support trim any more on 3rd party hard drives. So I have no ordered an OCW hard drive. Now my question is. What if I used my 1tb samsung evo as a secondary internal hard drive in my optical bay?? Will this create problems as opposed to it being my boot up drive that just wont do the trick?? Please anyone who has tried this let me know. I tried to search but I just dont get the answer I am looking for. This is on a mid 2012 15" core i7

I'm new to the SSD world. Been using mine for a week and I love it. My IMAC is only 3G link speed, so I went with the OWC 3G drive. Works great. I saw the Samsungs had high marks, but I wasn't sure I wanted to deal with the TRIM issue and they didn't offer a 3G model. Articles said that my model would only give 1.5G speed with the 6G drive. Another reason I went with OWC was for the 3G SSD.
Most articles on TRIM are from a few years back. The more reliable vendors like Samsung are probably getting better with the drive management anyway. So the TRIM issue is probably not as big of a deal as it was in older SSD drives and like you said, exaggerated.
Definitely need to read the cautions like you said and verify compatibility. Mine is run in the Data Doubler and so far it's great and runs at full 3G speeds. No problem yet and hadn't had any boot issues. Disk speed test shows about 2 to 2.25 times average increase (95MB old drive to 240MB on 3G SSD) in sustained read/write. Random read/write increase is as much as 80 times faster. I may not be getting the 6G speed, but I definitely notice a big difference with the 3G SSD.  Computer performance is noticeability much better. Video playback in Safari is drastically improved. I'm spoiled already.
The OP said he had mid 2012  MacBook Pro. He should be fine, but I did advise him to get his model id and verify compatibility. OWC plainly states the issues of compatibility with the optical bay for different models it supports.

  • 3rd Party Hard Drives on Intel Xserve

We purchased an Intel Xserve with 3 80GB Apple SATA drives in the three bays. As we did with our G4 Xserve previously, we wanted more storage and opted to install higher capacity drives.
We ended up buying four (don't ask!) Seagate Baracuda 400GB SATA 7200 drives. Two worked fine but the other two would (about half the time) either show up on the login desktop about 15-45 seconds after the main desktop appeared after a reboot and occasionally wouldn't show up at all until another reboot was performed. Only about 1/3 of the time they actually show up fine and simultaneously when the main login desktop loads (like they should).
So thinking it might be a vendor problem, we purchased a Maxtor 500GB SATAII 7200 drive. Same problem.
On the occasions when the drives don't show up at all, System Profiler doesn't show anything in the bay, nor does Disk Utility see it. Nothing in the system.log or hwmond.log.
There didn't seem to be any problems with the original 3 80GB Apple drives (also Seagate Barracudas) that originally came with the Intel Xserve.
Does anyone know why this may be happening? Is it Apple's way of forcing you to buy their (overpriced) hard disks? Why would 2 of 5 3rd party drives work OK and the other 3 not?
We never had a problem using numerous 3rd party SATA drives in our existing G4 Xserve.

    Don,
We' upgraded our 2 80GB Apple SATA drives to Maxtor 750 SATAII drives (the ones Apple appears to use in their own modules of that size). I found one drive would consistently mount just fine, either after a reboot or removing and reinserting the module. The other would stay in "orange light" condition - never attempting to access it. (no blue light flicker). What I found after taking the drive back out of the module and reinstalling it is that there appears to be a great sensitivity to pressure on a cable that runs under the drive (and appears to only activate the lights in the front of the drive). For instance, I tested by not screwing the drive into the module at all (mearly letting gravity keep it in the module) and hooking it back up. It mounted immediately. Putting one screw in at a time, I found that the drive would not mount after inserting the second screw. More games allowed me to get all four screws in, the drive would mount but the lights would stay orange. Leaving the drive screwed in, but putting some finger pressure on a side of the drive near the front of the module shifted the drive slightly, and afterwards the drive mounted properly with appropriate signal light behavior.
If your drive is anything like mine, my guess is that it is very slightly larger than the 80GB drive and pressing the cable into the frame either shorting it, or giving it bad contact via pressure on it's connector at the back of the module. Try shifting the cable, relieving pressure on the drive, etc. until it appears to reliably mount. I've had no problems with the drive since performing this proceedure (though it's only been a bit over a week).
    Good luck!

  • Can I add a 3rd party SSD to a dv7 that has the 750GB Hybrid drive?

I have been given contradictory answers from 2 different HP sales reps.
I am looking to purchase a dv7 with a single storage drive, and will at some later time like to add a second storage drive to the empty bay. One rep told me that both the dv6 and dv7 have 2 empty bays, and I am nearly certain this is incorrect as I've read that people were removing the optical drives of their dv6 in order to add a second disk storage drive. I was also told that if I purchase the laptop with the hybrid drive, I would NOT be able to add a SSD later on down the road because of incompatibility. Another rep told me that if I started with the hybrid drive, I COULD add a second storage drive, in the form of either a SSD or HDD.
I realize that when trying to customize the laptop, it won't allow me to choose both the 750GB hybrid AND the 32GB SSD together, as it forces me to choose either the hybrid alone, or the regular HDD and the 32GB SSD...so perhaps there is some truth to a hybrid and SSD not being able to function together properly???
So my question remains, if I customize a dv7 with only the 750GB Hybrid drive, could I later add a 3rd party SSD without issues?

The hybrid drive is physically just a 2.5 inch laptop hard drive and will leave a bay open. The 32 gig ssd is an mSATA module and is located far away from the hard drives so even if one is present it should not block use of a second hard drive. Here is the most recent dv7 manual. Look at pages 47 and 70.
    Manual
I believe as long as you have only one 2.5 inch standard SATA drive the second hard drive bay is available for an additional drive. You may need a caddy and cable, however.
What exact model of the dv7 are you looking to purchase? This would help answer more definitely I think. The dv6 definitely does not have 2 hard drive bays, just the dv7.

  • My 3rd Party SSD won't mount

I am having trouble because I can't tell exactly what my problem is, in order to find the solution.
I have just installed a Crucial M500 SSD into a Macbook Pro. I installed and time machine'd it as an external drive, and it booted just fine (using the Option Key).
I put it inside the MBP, and I go automatically to Recovery. I can't mount the drive.
It's unclear to me if this is some kind of OS X problem, or if this is because of the 3rd party SSD issue that so many are plagued with, since Apple decided to lock down kext signing.
Regarding the Yosemite SSD problem, everyone on the internet points to this:
    http://www.cindori.org/Trim-enabler-and-yosemite/
But this assumes the drive can be mounted. My Macintosh HD volume is grayed out and can't be mounted.
I have confirmed the drive is fine and the cable is fine, because the original HDD works fine if I put it back in the Mac, and the SSD works fine if I put it back in an enclosure.
I've already done the installation and time machine process twice, with the same results. Repeated attempts to repair and erase have resulted in worse results, until I took the SSD out, used it externally again, and put it back in.
I could really use some sage guidance here!

I gave you steps but not what to do at each step. So, you need to first boot from the external drive that holds your original system:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the external disk icon.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
Next, you need to repartition and reformat the SSD which is now the internal drive:
    Drive Partition and Format
    1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area.  If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing.  SMART info will not be reported  on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Apply button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Security button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Now, you need to boot from the Recovery  HD that is located on your now external drive:
    Boot Using OPTION key:
      1. Restart the computer.
      2. Immediately after the chime press and hold down the
          "OPTION" key.
      3. Release the key when the boot manager appears.
      4. Select the Recovery HD icon. If there are two DO NOT use the one labeled 10.10.
      5. Click on the arrow button below the icon.
    When the Utilities Menu appears:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
      1. Open Disk Utility in the Utilities folder.
      2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
      3. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
      4. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag
it to the Destination entry field.
      5. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to
          the Source entry field.
      6. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the internal new SSD. Source means the external former internal drive.
Upon completion quit Disk Utility. From the Apple menu in the screen menubar select Set Startup Disk. Set it to the internal SSD. Select Restart.

  • Installing 3rd Party Drivers

Is it possible to install 3rd party drivers during a Safe Boot?
    If so, is it better?
I'm having trouble with drivers loading sometimes, and other times not ... seems to be having problems "around" "Login Window".
I use auto Login on Startup and Restarts.
Wondering if this could be a "when and where of installation" issue.
Guessing ... apologies for being vague ... particulars can be found on M-Audio's site Forum (if you're really interested):

Stumped again ... this is a new replacement PCI audio card.

I got a Rev B Replacement card from M-Audio. It behaved the same way as before under 10.5.6, until I ran AppleJack.
I believe that cleared up the problems: M-Audio's v2.0.8 drivers don't install properly under 10.5.6... As I understand things, Ownership and Permissions need to be changed, and caches needed to be rebuilt. AppleJack under auto pilot did this relatively fast ... compared to how long its taken to arrive at a solution ...

    Also replaced the PRAM battery.
Up and running fine to date with the Sonnet Tango USB/FW and Rosewill NIC PCI cards alongside.
Perhaps AppleJack could solve other 3rd parties driver's installation woes?

I installed a new SSD drive in my computer and now Adobe Creative Suite Web Premium says I don't have a license. I have license. It was very expensive. I am disabled now, and I need this software working. Adobe Acrobat has been a primary tool for accommodating memory problems after a brain injury. (A car ran me down while I was out getting exercise.) I installed the SSD because I needed my management of PDF files to run faster. I called tech support for help when the software first stopped working, but they needed me to give them a number from my original disks. Because of my disability, I've been having someone come in to clean, and the shelves where I kept my software packages were cleared. I've been hunting for them ever since, but I can't look for them myself for very long at a time. Today I finally found them, but now I can't seem to contact tech support. What happened? I don't want to delete my old files because I need the setup to remain unchanged, because I don't do well with changes. I think all I should need is to have someone located the license file on drive E: and move it to wherever it is needed on the SSD drive, but I don't know what to look for.

Tech support is not normally available on weekends.  You should contact them as soon as the weekend passes and pick up where you left off with them.

I have a 3rd party hard drive with movies on it ,it is connected to my airport extreme. The AE is connected to my tv via ethernet cable. Can I stream my movies to the Tv ?

    Not without a player..
The AE is a dumb file server.. the hard disk you plug in is an even dumber hard disk.
There are no smarts in this setup.. not even DLNA. So the TV would have to be an extremely smart one to read raw files on a network drive.. none do that I know of.
A solution is WD live TV.. it can read files from just about any file source on network and play them to the TV.
Nothing apple makes will do that.. ATV is a streamer not a media player. Everything in the Apple world is tied up with itunes. So you must have a computer running itunes to use it.
You can download a more generic player for ipad, and put that as part of the network.. but you still need ATV to display the video.
