Installing 64-Bit Linux distro on MacPro 2,1
Hi,
I have a MacPro 2,1 and want to install either 64-bit linux or 64-bit CentOS. I have tried using bootcamp to install the bootstrap then installing linux as per the guide here:
http://www.helium.com/items/421906-how-to-install-linux-on-an-intel-mac-with-boo t-camp
But there is no "Windows" drive when I boot and hold 'alt'...
I'm running OS 10.5.8 if that makes any difference.
Is this a case of not being able to do this because of my hardware? I know that my MacPro 2,1 doesn't allow me to boot into 64 bit version of Snow Leopard (even though the hardware clearly supports it) is this the same deal. I'm 'locked out' of using 64-bit with my Mac Pro?
Any help would be greatly appreciated...
Dave
Hi Dave,
the Ubuntu community is quite good https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacPro
Be sure to have a backup of your OSX and be sure to read the warning on that page !
Good Luck

Should I use the 64 bit or 32 bit Linux distro for Oracle Service Bus
I'm going to install OSB for the first time on Oracle Linux 5.3 for development use. Does it matter whether I install OSB on the 32 bit or 64 bit version of Oracle Linux?
I've had better luck with 32 bit Linux distros in the past, but if there's a benefit to using the 64 bit distro I'll use it. My hardware has 4 GB of RAM, which I hope is enough for development use.
Thanks.
DeanI found this post on the Ubuntu forums which indicates trouble running Workshop on ubuntu. Maybe OSB works but Workshop has problems on Ubuntu:

Flex 10 - 32 bit Linux Distros
Hi guys,
I am considering getting rid of Windows 8 completely on my Flex 10 and installing a 32 bit Linux distro, probably Lubuntu. I was wondering if this is possible on the Flex 10? I have been reading the forums here and see people have problems with the installation of 64bit Linux distros and was wondering if it would be any easier to install a 32 bit distro?The local filesystem is actually ext3 on linux, not UFS... my bad. The server is an Isilon storage cluster, which by default returns 64-bit file handles via NFS. Understandably the OS kernel shouldn't care about the app, but when a 64-bit file id is presented back to a 32-bit application such as sunstudio CC, the results lead me to believe it's not supported.
This case is further shown by the fact that when I constrain the NFS share to present 32-bit only file handles, the sunstudio compiler works like a champ. -
How do setup FlexUnit in your CI build process on 64-Bit Linux
Hello everyone. I am trying to setup FlexUnit in my build process and am using Rackspace cloud servers for my build server. I only have the option of Linux 64 bit distros or Windows 32b/64b. I started setting up and configuring everything on Linux but ran into problems installing the required stand alone player for test execution using FlexUnit. There is no 64-bit linux compatitble version of the stand alone player. In configuring the system to use the browser plugin on the machine instead of the stand alone player for executing the tests, I then get a manual interaction component which doesn't fit well with an automated CI build.
Am I the only person out there trying to integrate FlexUnit into my CI process on a 64b Linux machine? Any pointers, tips, workarounds or general hypothetical ideas would be great!@mbbender - Answers below:
> I have been able to get the Flash Plugin working in a browser on my 64b Ubuntu 10.4 system. However, from my understanding I can not use the flash plugin from a browser to properly execute a headless execution of my tests during the CI process. To execute the tests as part of the CI process I need the Flash Stand Alone Player.
-- As of FlexUnit 4.1-beta2, you have the option of executing your tests using the stand-alone debug Flash Player using the default mechanism to launch that player or using a custom command, which could potentially point to the browser. Check out the docs on the Ant task @ http://docs.flexunit.org/index.php?title=Ant_Task#Usage and the sample CI build using a browser @ http://github.com/flexunit/flexunit/blob/master/FlexUnit4SampleCIProject/build.browser.xml for more details on how to do this.
> Are you saying that I can somehow use the Flash Plugin dependencies to install the Flash Stand Alone Player? If so, would I then need a 32b emulator wrapper for running the Stand Alone Player? Or, are you suggesting that I can somehow use the Flash Plugin in the browser to do what I need to execute my tests during the Hudson build?
-- Although I'm not a savvy Linux admin, it's my understanding that recent 64-bit Linux distros can execute 32-bit applications as well as 64-bit applications. The only req I'm aware of is that the 32-bit version of the dependencies must be available. In this case, executing the 32-bit version of the SA player should work from what I understand.
> Do you have a CI build process setup on a Linux 64b CentOS system with FlexUnit? To be honest, I'm more concerned with the end result right now than learning how to do it on my own and would like to know if you can potentially help me get this done a little quicker if you are interested.
-- I currently have a setup using 64-bit CentOS and running the 32-bit SA player, although it's not on Adobe's proper list of supported OSes. We've worked with other folks who have the 32-bit SA player running with FlexUnit on Ubuntu 64-bit. There was some feedback on some issues using older versions of openSUSE, but I don't know too many details re: the problem.
Hope this helps.

Is it possible to install 32 bit oracle db on a 64 bit linux server?
Is it possible to install 32 bit oracle 10g db on a 64 bit linux server rhel 4.
thanks in advance,
chauYes, it is possible, but you can perfectly install the 64 bits version on RHEL4. However you will have more trouble on unsupported OS... so it's useful that you can install the 32 bits version.

ShaikYou either install a 32-bit OS and use this stage area directory or create a 64-bit stage area directory and install EBS on your existing OS.

Apps allways wanting to install on 64 bit linux
Ive got Air installed on 64bit Ubuntu by following the instrcutions here
i then went and installed BBC iplayer
everything worked fine.
but when i try to download somthing from bbc iplayer, it says that i need to install the app, I click ok and air redownloads the app before saying that i allready have it, do i want to lauch it?
to launch the app i have to stop it as its most likly allready running, then allow air to lauch it which finally completes the download....
how can i make it so that Iplayer sees that i allready have it installed and just start the download
works fine on my 32bit laptopInstalling AIR Runtime and/or an AIR application from broswer is known as 'Seamless Install'. This feature basically detects whether AIR runtime is already installed on the system and behaves accordingly.
Unfortunately, this feature is not yet supported on 64-bit Linux distributions.

~~[DONE]~~ Installing Oracle 10g Rel. 2 on linux distros...
Hello guys,
I wanted to ask if anyone of you tried to install oracle 10g release 2 for personal use on any linux distro (free distros).
If yes which linux did you try?

sysdbaChoose the Linux distribution that makes you feel most comfortable. At the Linux level, there is very little difference between fedora core 4 and SUSE linux 9.2 (if there is, they are not allowed to use the label Linux). At the 'other stuff thrown in' level, which makes it a distro, you need to decide which is going to make you happiest.
In any case, installing Oracle in Linux means you need to have the prerequisites set up. That means a specific version of the kernel, a specific set of libraries and a specific set of installed applications. If you have those, you follow a specific set of steps to install.
Werner Puschitz helps you figure out the specific prerequisites at ttp://www.puschitz.com ... if you can not understand the prereqs and steps, then you might want to spend more time learning Linux basic admin until you are more comfortable otherwise you will get into some trouble down the road.

A Linux distro that teaches the user as he/she navigates?
Hi, I was wondering about this idea I had about making a Linux distro that teaches users how to use the desktop while teaching them the fundamentals of Linux, like installing packages. It would a noob distro. So I wanna get ideas laid out and see what you guys think.
I think Gnome would be a good environment. Nothing would be modified, just a default Gnome with all the fixin's, a bootsplash to cover up the boot menu, and an easy to follow GUI installer. When the user logs in the first time they'll hear a voice helping them out (along with captions that can be turned on or off). The tutorial can be turned on or off. Basically it guides the user and instructs him/her to open/close windows, drag and drop, chinge window geometry, minimize/maximize, create shortcuts, open programs, navigate filesystem(as well as mount/unmount, and teaching the purpose of the different directories), browse the internet, setup email, and install a program using some kind of GUI package manager. There might be more, like tutorials for OpenOffice or Abiword, the Gimp, and other miscellaneous programs.
I also need a name, so I welcome any suggestions!I think this is a good idea. But I agree with Varreon that it should be a tutorial program instead, if that tutorial prgramm is good you can build a distribution tailored specifically for this program later on.
I disagree that Flash video tutorials are sufficient for new Linux users. There are people who really want to learn something about their system and the philosophy behind it. Such a tutorial could explain basic concepts about free software and where to get help (point to relevant manpages and wikis). I really like the tutorial that pops up when wmii starts for example. I would have had no clue what to do without it and it basically showed me the beauty of tiling window management. That's what such a tutorial program should be IMHO, just a starter that shows you how to do basic operations and where to learn everything else that is needed. Often the users want to learn about their system, they just don't know how. Maybe the program could even include a selection of recommended packages for simple Distros like Arch. In my opinion Arch is a great starting distro for people who want to learn about Linux but have never used it before (or have just a bit of experience with other Distros). If everything goes well, they have a working base system, but they don't know which apps are good. The wiki lists a few recommendations, but not all of them are simple and you really have to find the wiki page and test them out. Why not something like "Arch Linux is designed to be simple. While it is possible to use a full-featured Desktop Environment like Gnome or KDE, we recommend to use simple applications. An example setup would include: Transmission as torrent client, Xchat as an IRC client, etc,". I think that would be really helpful for users that want a simple yet easily usable system. -
32-bit flash and java plugins freeze firefox and gnome on 64-bit linux
I have installed FC13 64-bit and am running 32-bit firefox 3.6.8 so that I can run flash plugin.
When I start 32-bit firefox 3.6.8 and go to site with flash or java applet, firefox locks up my gnome desktop necessitating a reboot of my computer.
Firefox 3.6.8 32-bit
Flash 10.1r82
Java jdk 1.6.0_15 32-bit
I have used a similar configuration on 32-bit FC13 with 32-bit Firefox 3.6.8 and everything works fine. No lockups.Hi!
I finally solved this problem. The 32-bit libflashplugin required a 32-bit libcurl library that is not installed by default on 64-bit linux systems (at least not on Fedora). Once I installed 32-bit libcurl libs, flash and java plugins starting magically working.
In my opinion, 64-bit Fedora has done a poor job with 32-bit compatibility viz a viz 32-bit libs. I will submit an improvement ticket to Fedora folks about installing more 32-bit libs on 64-bit distros.

I know Arch64 is pretty good and well under development, but I just wanna play around (not spend much time with) a 64-bit linux.. and I was wondering what would be the best solution (I was thinking of Fedora Core 6 64 when it comes out), but I would like to hear you opinions! (besides arch64 cause that's already a good option)

Arch64 is the best I've tried so far. Gentoo isn't worth the effort if you ask me. Frugalware seems to be doing a good job keeping the 64-bit version up to date. But their build system and boot scripts and all that are a mess. Might as well use Ubuntu, same story. Arch is superior.
I just wish there were more guys compiling packages for Arch64.
Uhm. Heya.
Agreed with boot scripts. Our bootscripts actually bad. But a new rewrite of these scripts will come in the future.
Second.
What is the problem with the build system ? Mess ?? Could you post any information WHAT is mess in that ? You ever saw that ? Or you only just saw a simple FrugalBuild and nothing else ?
Dunno but we can easly maintain all of our packages with this ""MESS"" buildsystem.
I dont got the point.

Oh, maybe those weren't the right words. I tried the same thing I would on Arch and it complained that the package didn't exist. Well I agreed, that's why I was trying to build it. I guess the biggest problem is lack of documentation. One good howto to build packages would be great. But also for other stuff like configuration. I searched on the Wiki but the only thing I could find assumed I knew stuff I couldn't possibly know.
One thing that you seem to do really well is patching when there's problems with software. Gentoo also does that really well. For example, Grub doesn't work with Arch64 because I have more than 2 gigs of memory (it's a bug in Grub). FrugalWare's latest net install has a patched Grub that does work.
The worst thing about FrugalWare that I experienced was the install. That thing is bad. First, it needs "back" buttons, like, yesterday. I had to reboot 3 times before getting it right. Granted, this was due to my hastyness, but still. The package selection sucks, I ended up choosing just the base group because pacman is awesome and package selection in the installer was a pain. Most important, it needs a "rescue" mode under the install. When the install fails for some reason it should drop back into the live rescue mode so another attempt can be made. Also, basic operations should be possible. I consider that very important for an advanced distro like Arch and FrugalWare. -

I used it for a while, and I will admit that emerge is the coolest thing since the keyboard.... however, the thing sucks ass on finding people who are familiar with it. Installing it takes so long I have time to eat, shower 'n shave, lounge, eat again, sleep a bit, etc etc etc. before it is done. It is also the most finicky POS I've ever had to deal with.
My two personal favorites thus far are arch and slack. Clean, fast, no-nonsense distros that get the job done. I will also admit that I have done better on uptime with slack than arch, but I'm blaming that on a few weeks of arch experience and about two years of slackware experience.
I'm surprised that OpenBSD didn't get a mention for the "other" category. It has the coolest packet filtering ever, and makes a superb router. -

Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G(on 64 bit Linux box)
We are unable to connect to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE 11G which is on 64 bit Red Hat Enterprise Linux.
Infrastructure: OBIEE 11.1.1.5 64bit, on 64 bit Red Hat Linux Enterprise Linux 5.6 , MS SQL Server 2008 on 64 bit Microsoft Windows Server
Issue Description: Unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE11G RPD
Details: We are unable to connect to SQL Server 2008 from OBIEE which is on a 64 bit Linux box. We created the ODBC connection on Linux box to the SQL server. Whenever we try to import metadata it throws an error that says ‘Connection Failed’.
Here are the steps we followed to setup the ODBC connection on Linux box.
1) We updated the user.sh file with the LD_LIBRARY_PATH and LD_LIBRARY_PATH_64 values that point to $ORACLE_HOME/bifoundation/odbc/lib
This is where we found the driver for SQL server SEmsss23.so.
2) We updated the odbc.ini file with the entry for SQL server with the connection details
SI_SQL_Server_DEV = SQL Server
[SI_SQL_Server_DEV]
Driver=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/Oracle_BI1/bifoundation/odbc/lib/SEmsss23.so
Description=DataDirect 5.1 SQL Server Wire Protocol
Address=10.230.216.52,54970
AlternateServers=
AnsiNPW=Yes
ConnectionRetryCount=0
ConnectionRetryDelay=3
Database=SVBDW_NEW
LoadBalancing=0
LogonID=SIDatavalidation
Password=~~~Password123
QuoteID=No
ReportCodePageConversionErrors=0
3) We updated the IDENTIFIER_QUOTE_CHAR with single quotes instead of double quotes in the DB features of the RPD
4) We updated the bash_profile file to point the ODBCINI variable to the path where the OBIEE odbc.ini file is present.
Export ODBCINI=/u001_OAS/Oracle/Middleware/instances/instance1/bifoundation/OracleBIApplication/coreapplication/setup/odbc.ini
The error in nqsserver.log file says “[nQSError: 16001] ODBC error state: IM002 code: 0 message: [DataDirect][ODBC lib] Data source name not found and no default driver specified.”Hi,
Make sure SQL Configuration Manager make sure the TCP/IP enabled. please try below method
Method 1
Re Create a new ODBC & Oracle Bi Server DSN Configuration test it and use it in the connection pools.
define your ODBC data source in your server where the BI Server is installed. Check your DB connections in your physical layer and make they are defined on your BI Server as well.
Method 2:
try using the complete TNS in below format in the datasource name section:
(DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP) (HOST =DB IP)(PORT = 1521)) ) (CONNECT_DATA = (SERVICE_NAME = ORCL) ) and provide the credentials.
Method 3:
To use the OCI call interface you need to have oracle client DB to be installed so that you can establish a connection using that DB credentials and connect to the remote dB and then import the tables.....this is the rule of thumb.
hope helps you.
Thanks

Is a 64-bit Linux RDBMS appliance on a Windows 7 64 bit host available?
I have Cloudera Hadoop running with no issues. All I have are 32-bit Oracle Linux environments. It appears I need a 64-bit Oracle environment to install the connector because it has to have Hadoop installed atop of it.
It there a 64-bit Oracle Linux virtual box or VM appliance for a Windows 7 64 host that I can use for testing? Even better, one that has the HADOOP connector and SQL Loader already installed?
RobWe are planning a VM that will have 64 bit Linux with single node Hadoop, connectors and a database. I will post a note when it is available.
Meanwhile, it is straightforward to have a 64 bit Oracle Database install and then add the Hadoop client that one of the connectors needs. The connectors documentation points to instructions for installing the Hadoop client.
