Installing 8.6 to a G3 PowerBook

Hello. I would like to install OS 8.6 to my Lombard PowerBook G3 that currently has OSX Panther installed. I have an original 8.5 CD disk with an 8.6 upgrade CD.
Do I simply insert the 8.5 disk and restart holding down the C key? Will I able to install 8.5?
I am happy to erase the HDD. Thank you and a HAPPY NEW YEAR to all Mac users worldwide

I suspect there may be a problem with installing 8.5. You have to install it, then reboot and install 8.6 to do the upgrade. According to the specs on [this page|http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/powerbookg3/stats/powerbook_g3333.html] the Lombard came with 8.6 originally. Installer discs will usually refuse to install on computers that came with a later OS, and if they will install there is no guarantee it will boot. You can always try if you don't mind that it might not work.
The other glitch might be if the person who installed Panther reformatted the drive at the time of the install and did not include OS9 drivers (I don't think it matters if you are using an earlier OS). You can check for this in Disk Utility but you might otherwise have to reformat the drive to install them if they didn't include them. I'd say there is a good chance they are there but it's another possible issue.

  • Installing CS5 Design Standard on my powerbook

i would like to install CS5 Design Standard on my new Powerbook without a DVD reader and can't find the place where i can download the two files (design standard and acrobat professional)? I have the two serial numbers.

Thank you very must for the information.
I still have a problem by entering my serial numbers. When I check the mail with the  the serial numbers that I’ve received in 2011 from Adobe (for CS5 Design Standard en Adobe Professional) it is mentioned that the language is DUTCH.
Could that be the problem why I get a message “serial number incorrect” ? I think the software I downloaded is an English version.

  • Can't boot after installing 10.5.4 on 17" powerbook

I've has Macs since 1987 and have never seen this one. I bought a family pack of 10.5 and it installed perfectly on both my Intell Powerbook and my wife's EMac. yesterday I tried to install it on my mother-in-laws 17" power book. It seemed to be working fine even though I had to ignore some Norton warnings. Even managed to get on the internet. So I shut it off. After a couple of hours decided to try it again just to make sure everything was working before I sent it home with her. The chime sounded, the little propeller thing started turning but after quite a while I got a picture of a circle with a line through it. Kind of like those warning signs like no smoking or no whatever without any words. It stayed like that for 15 minutes until I finally shut it down. Tried to reboot using the Leopard install DVD holding the C key down and got the same thing. Got kind of panic cause my MIL hadn't backed up for awhile. Finally got it to reboot using the 10.3 install discs so decided to just install 10.3 and see if I could back up everything before trying again on 10.5. Two questions:
What is that symbol ie what does it mean? and
What do I do about it?
    Thanks '
    GS

Normally this issue would only appear with Disk Doctor or Speed Disk on any version of Mac OS X. Since you are using anti-virus, then it probably was more likely due to something else that made the directory damaged. See my FAQ* on the directory:
    http://www.macmaps.com/directoryfaq.html
Norton's anti-virus and firewall are actually relatively redundant except in cases where you are trying to avoid becoming a "typhoid mary." If using them, make sure the version they have has been tested with your operating system. ClamXAv is a much better anti-virus application for more current operating systems as it offers less bloat on the operating system.

  • Error message during install of 10.4 on G4 Powerbook

I have an Apple retail store purchased version of Tiger OSX v10.4 (family pack) that I am trying to install on my Powerbook G4. I get through Install Base Sys Part 1 and about 75% into INSTALL ESSENTIALS, I get the message "errors installing the software, please try installing again. I have ... several times, I tried the update, archive, I tried erase and install and I end up with the same message at the same point. Help!? Previous system was 10.3.5. Now I have NOTHING working.
    Thanks

Yes, that worked, but then I got greedy and when I tried with 10.4 no luck and I got the flashing question mark folder. Do I need to settle for the 10.3.5? Should I reinstall the initial software that came with the laptop (Classic OS) and then up to the 10.3...and let it be? I initially wanted to upgrade because I got Light Scribe which needed at least 10.3.9. I've subsequently installed that on a PC and it is working great, but now my laptop is USELESS! I have a G5 that is my main computer.
    Any ideas?

  • I have installed Smile Box and can't get it to install, I am running a Mac Powerbook G4 10.5.8 1.33 GHz help?

I am running a Mac Powerbook G4 OSX 10.5.8 1.33 GHz  and can't get Smiebox to install, it downloads the program just fine but will not let me install it, can someone tell me why?

    Hi SusieQ,
Seems they have no idea what they're doing over there, to wit...
    Mac Snow Leopard and above*
In general, we recommend a multi-core processor and at least 2 GB RAM.
Connection to the Internet is required; Smilebox is optimized for a high-speed broadband connection, and that faster connection will give you the best performance.
Smilebox uses your Internet browser and Flash11 (or higher) to run. We automatically detect whether Flash is installed and will help you install the free download if need be. You will also need javascript enabled. Your internet browser and any security software (firewall, antivirus) you have on your computer may need to be configured to "allow" Smilebox internet access. Please refer our article on - I have security software (firewall or anti-virus software) that I suspect is blocking Smilebox.  What can I do to fix that?
If your computer shipped with Windows XP, Windows Vista, Windows 7 and Windows 8 you can install run Smilebox; we do require that Windows XP computers have Service Pack 3 installed.
To run Smilebox on your Mac, your Macintosh should have an Intel or Power PC processor on a G5 or higher (if your Mac was made in the past 3 years, it should meet this requirement), 2GB or more RAM.
*Smilebox will not run on earlier versions of the Mac OS X including Leopard (10.5).
Snow Leopard is 10.6.x, no G3/G4/G5 PPC Mac can run 10.6 or above.
So this line is wrong, or two other lines about Snow Leopard are wrong....
To run Smilebox on your Mac, your Macintosh should have an Intel or Power PC processor on a G5 or higher

  • Install of OS X leopard on Powerbook G4 stalls each time

Hi - I was wondering if anyone out there could help me - I have a Powerbook G4 15", bought around 2005/6. Great machine, never had any problems... until now... I recently did an apple security update, after that the computer never rebooted, always got hung on the spinning cog thing.
I backed-up the hard disk, then did an erase and install with my OS X install DVD. It all works fine for a while and usually gets to the point where it says "around 1hr 11mins to go". Then it never moves on! I have looked at the log and it seems to be working fine, then stops progressing. I have left it going the last 2 nights, but after 8hrs+, no progress.
If it helps, this is what the last few lines of the 295 line log look like:

I am really not that techy, and have never done OS installs on macs before until now. I am loathe to bring it to an apple reseller in Dublin as they will charge $$$s just to look at it!
If anyone can help or has experienced something similar and found a solution, I would love to hear from you.
    Thanks very much, Sally.

One possibility is there's a problem with the installer DVD. Carefully clean it. Another is a problem with computer's optical drive mechanism. There are laser lens cleaning discs you can purchase to clean the laser, but if the drive is out of alignment that requires a technician to fix. A third possibility is that the hard drive has defects or is failing. You can do the following to see if it fixes the problem:
    Extended Hard Drive Preparation
    1. Boot from your OS X Installer Disc.
    2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Note the SMART status of the drive in DU's status area. If it does not say "Verified" then the drive is failing or has failed and will need replacing. SMART info will not be reported on external drives. Otherwise, click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
    3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID (for Intel Macs) or APM (for PPC Macs) then click on the OK button. Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
    4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
    5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
    6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Lastly, there may be memory failure. This may be evidenced if the install fails at random points in the process. However, this is not definitive. Unfortunately, there are no truly reliable tests for RAM except to remove a module and then run the machine to see if the problem ceases.

  • Install problems with Snow Leopard on Powerbook G4

I have an old Powerbook G4 running 10.4.11 that I wanted to upgrade to try to get the computer in a more steady state. I bought Snow Leopard but when I try to Install it, it says it can't install because it needs a Intel-based mac. Isn't the G4 an Intel-based Mac? Is there anything I can do. Or is 10.4.11 the farthest I can "update"

Before upgrading to 10.5.8, consider the following:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-2275
Also if it is not a steady state now, it most likely won't be when upgrading either.   You should first identify why your machine is having trouble now, until you know for certain there isn't some software driver issue, or hardware issue, you can't upgrade. Perhaps it is best if you identified your current issues, and someone can help you isolate them.

  • Installing a flash player on a powerbook G4 OS X version 10.5.8

I have a Powerbook G4 Mac OS X version 10.5.8 with a 1.5GHz powerPC G4 processor with 1.25 GB of memory. I have tried many different ways of installing a flash player that I have found from forums. All have failed or maybe I did not do it right. Please help me with this problem, Thankyou.

The file you downloaded should be a .zip file, which you've most liekly unzipped already. (If not, it's here:  Flash Player 10.1.102.64 and 9.0.289.0 )
Inside that should be a few folders. One is named "10_1r102_64".
Inside that folder is a flashplayer_10_1r102_64_ub_mac.dmg
Double click that and it will mount on your desktop, and open a window with the installer.
Right click the installer and choose "Show Package Contents"
Go to: Contents/Resources and double click the Adobe Flash Player.pkg file
The installer will open, ask for your Admin password, and it will install.

    Hey everyone,
I just tried to install Mac OS 9 so that I could use classic but it tried to open classic to install it. The PowerBook is the most recent before the MacBook Pros came out (bought it a month before they came out >_<). Anyway, I tried starting up from the disc and that didn't work. I bought a Mac OS Classic disc to play games on my computer, which runs 10.4.8 (Panther I believe), and it wouldn't install, so I copied all the files from the disc to my hard drive and tried running Classic from there. Now when I go to System Preferences and the Classic folder, I can tell it to start Classic, but Classic never runs. • Problem installing Mac OS X Update on PowerBook G4

I'm trying to install the Mac OS X Update Combined 10.5.5 on my PowerBook G4 but it can't open the installer package. It keeps saying the Bill of Materials was not found. Are there any answers to this please?
    Thanks,
    Colin

The System Requirements on the update page I already mentioned
    (http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/macosx1055comboupdate.html) clearly state that
*Mac OS X 10.5.1 - Mac OS X 10.5.4* is required for this update.
Is it not obvious that 10.3.9 does not meet this requirement?
You must buy Leopard (an OS upgrade ) before you can update it.

  • Trying to install 14GB IBM Travelstar into Wallstreet Powerbook

I'm having difficulty installing a new hard drive in my Wallstreet Powerbook. It came with a 2GB drive - a bit too small for a full installation of OS X.
I first tried upgrading it to a 6GB drive, which seemed to work initially. The drive install went smoothly and I was able to boot from the install CD and start the OS X installer. For some reason, the OS X installer said it could not use the 6GB drive because it could not be configured as the boot drive. Whatever.
So I got a 14GB IBM drive (IBM Travelstar 14GS DCYA-214000, 17mm) and installed it in the computer. This time, it won't even boot. After I put in the drive and plug it in, the green light comes on and the fans come on full blast, but nobody's home. No amount of PMU resetting can convince it to boot. Thinking the drive might be defective, I tried a different drive of the same model number. No dice.
I searched google and found a website (http://www.medicalmac.com/faq1E.html) that confirmed that the IBM drive I'm using is definitely compatible with the Wallstreet, but I can't get it to work for the life of me.
    Any ideas?
    13" Macbook 2.0GHz Core 2 Duo | Mac Mini 1.66GHz Core Duo Mac OS X (10.4.8)

Your Mac may be one that requires the first partition to be less that 8GB. See 8 GB Partition Requirements
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25249
Also, you need to check if your Mac requires a firmware (Boot ROM version) update. Mac OS X: Available firmware updates
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86117 If an update is required, the update must be installed (using OS 9) BEFORE you install OS X.
But that shouldn't keep you from booting to a CD. Are the OS X install CDs a universal/retail type. or CDs from another model Mac (won't work)? I'm thinking you have a loose connection somewhere due to the HD install.

  • OS9 install problem with 10.4.9 powerbook

I got an OS9 retail disc to run classic on my system because I dont have any of the discs that came with the computer. First I tried to boot classic from the disc, but evidently that wont work because changes need to be made but the disc is of course read only, and it wont continue. Then I copied the system folder from the disc to the hard drive but an error comes up that says OS9 will only start up from the original disc. I also could not boot the disc and it doesnt and I cant get it to appear in the startup disc screen in sys preferences. I have considered getting a CD-RW and copying the OS9 disc onto it but I dont have one. Please help, I am a noob with OS.
    Thankyou very much

    Hi, Mark -
Are both Macs identical? If not, that could explain the problem.
Normally, when OS 9 is installed, it is tailored to be specific to the hardware on the machine running the installer; this installation will not be capable of booting another model Mac, one with different hardware.
However, such an install OS 9 can be used as Classic on a different machine - since Classic does not directly access the machine's hardware, full compatibility in that regard is not necessary.
There is a way around this using a retail OS 9 Install CD to do a universal (boot any Mac) install of OS 9. In your setup and following the way you have gotten OS 9.2.2 onto the PowerBook, this would mean your "Mac A" would need to be able to use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD.
Simpler would be to use either the original disks that came with the PowerBook and install OS 9 from those, then update as needed; or, if it is an original PowerBook G4 or a PowerBook G4 (DVI) model, use a retail OS 9.2.1 Install CD to directly install OS 9 onto the PowerBook.
One other item of note, perhaps - in order for a volume to be bootable using both OSX and OS 9 (on a machine capable of booting to either), it must have been formatted as Mac OS Extended (also called HFS+), and be no larger than 200GB.
